Modern marine diesel engines may look very similar to the large, noisy, oily chunks of iron of yesteryear, but a lot has changed under the bonnet, says Sam Fortescue

Best Marine diesel engines are essential for any boat

An inboard engine is a critical part of any boat, whether you're a purist who only motors when safety demands, or if you'd rather get into harbour in time for last orders. The chances are you also rely on the engine for battery charging. Credit: WorldFoto/Alamy Stock Photo

Best marine diesel engines: the new tech making inboard engines cleaner, more efficient, lighter and more reliable

Once referred to as the ‘auxiliary’ engine , your boat’s inboard diesel is now so much more than just a helping hand.

Not only is it central to your boat’s ability to manoeuvre safely into tight marina berths, it also allows you to keep up average speeds and make the tidal gate before it closes, charges the batteries that run the ever-expanding suite of entertainment and navigational tools aboard, and keeps the beers cold and showers warm.

Despite visual similarities to the noisy models of yesteryear, modern marine diesel engines are cleaner and more efficient, lighter and more reliable. And they are increasingly interactive.

If you’re considering re-powering your boat, here are some of the key features to look out for.

Marine Diesel Engines: Emissions

Tighter regulation in Europe has been forcing engine manufacturers to reduce the harmful emissions generated by their equipment.

In the marine sector, that means complying with the 2013 Recreational Craft Directive, known as RCD 2, and often with the EPA Tier 3 requirements in the USA.

Though most manufacturers anticipate further tightening in the future, there is nothing yet on the cards for marine diesel engines in the leisure sailing sector.

The focus on reducing emissions has resulted in a better understanding of the combustion process inside the cylinder.

A key pollutant, nitrous oxide, is formed at higher combustion temperatures, so one advance has been to reduce those temperatures.

Beta Marine, marine diesel engine

A mechanical system, like this Beta Marine engine, offers ease of maintenance. You don’t need a laptop to reset the electronics

Increasing the swept volume of the cylinder theoretically creates more power, because there is room to burn more fuel each cycle, but if you keep fuel consumption the same, the diesel generates less heat in combustion.

Another area of development has been around the fuel injection system.

A lot has been written about the desirability and reliability of so-called common rail versus mechanical injection for marine diesels.

As Andrew Growcoot, CEO of Beta Marine puts it: ‘The benefits of a mechanical system [are] simplicity and ease of maintenance. One doesn’t need a laptop to reset the electronics ; a mechanical system is safe and will not power down at the wrong time.’

Beta Marine is a British marine diesel engine supplier that uses a Kubota block, and has no intention of introducing the technology any time soon on sub-100hp engines.

The same is true of France’s Nanni and Spain’s Solé, who both supply good, reliable diesel marine engines to the sailing market.

Hedley Beavis of Solé distributor Engines Plus says research to find a common rail injection system has been delayed by COVID-19.

‘It is not an easy task finding a reliable common rail engine but also at a reasonable price for the marine market,’ he adds.

But while common rail injection makes your engine reliant on an electronic control unit for precise high-pressure fuel injection and makes it more susceptible to poor quality fuel, this widely used technology can also offer significant benefits in terms of power and fuel consumption.

Plus, it’s quieter and produces less vibration.

That’s because the diesel is injected as a huge number of tiny droplets, greatly increasing the surface area for better combustion.

Common rail injection is usually found on more powerful engines – Volvo Penta uses the system in its D3 engine and above, which starts at 110hp.

But Yanmar took a bold step in 2018 when it launched a new 40hp unit with electronic fuel injection. The 3JH40 is still the smallest marine diesel engine with this technology.

‘Through common rail technology, the 3JH40 offers minimal fuel consumption and exceptionally low noise and emission levels, exceeding EPA Tier 3 and EU RCD Tier 2 emission regulations for virtually smoke- and odour-free operation,’ says marketing manager Sander Gesink.

‘People don’t want to have the smell of diesel onboard making them seasick.’

The demand for more plentiful electrical power on board boats has led engine manufacturers to increase the output of their alternator systems.

Where a typical alternator on a 30hp engine might have been around 50A two decades ago, they are now often in excess of 100A.

So, for example, even Volvo Penta’s entry-level D1-13 engine packs a meaty 115A alternator with its own built-in charging regulator, for optimal battery charging.

The 50hp D2-50 offers the same alternator, as well as the option of expanding output with a pulley take-off for a second alternator.

Volvo diesel marine engines

Even Volvo Penta’s entry-level D1-13 engine packs a meaty 115-amp alternator with a built-in charging regulator

Beta Marine’s 43hp engine comes with a 70A alternator as standard, but can accommodate upgrades to 120A or 175A alternators, as well as a second 175A alternator for really hefty charging.

It is worth noting, however, that many of these alternators remain fairly basic bits of kit with an inflexible charging regime.

That’s one reason that Yanmar has worked with Mastervolt on its 150hp-plus 4LV engines to develop a secondary charging option in addition to the on-board 130A unit.

Using the Alpha III charge regulator, that alternator will put exactly the right charge into the battery bank on a three-step regime that works regardless of the RPM by varying the field current going into the alternator.

Units on smaller, older marine diesel engines can easily be retrofitted with a regulator, such as Sterling Power’s Pro Reg.

Interactive marine diesel engines

It used to be that marine diesel engines would buzz along in the background unless they overheated, in which case you were treated to an ear-splitting alarm from the control panel.

They still do sport their own dedicated warning lights which ping on if oil pressure drops or the temperature rises above a safe 80-90ºC.

But with the growth of instrumentation on board, and the development of fast, bi-directional networks, engine manufacturers have had to up their game.

That means enabling the engine to put data into your NMEA2000 instrument network about its speed, temperature and oil pressure, as well as many other potential parameters on more complex systems.

‘Captains just want to see their engine performance and details on their MFDs,’ says Yanmar’s Gesink.

Steyr Motors

Steyr’s unique monoblock marine diesel engine starts at 75hp. The MO 4-CYL uses a two-stage unit injection system with the benefits of high-pressure fuel without the requirement for electronic control

As a common rail injection engine, Yanmar’s 3JH40 already has the electronics necessary to connect directly to the boat’s NMEA2000 instrument network, as well as the VC10 electronic throttles and other controls via a J1939 CAN bus.

These include the YD42 smart panel display, which will toggle through engine data such as load percentage and engine hours, as well as standard navigational data like depth and wind speed.

‘Direct connectivity to NMEA and J1939 CAN-bus networks has been purpose engineered into the 4LV range, allowing future-proofed integration to any multifunction bridge display. Same counts for the 3JH40 and the rest of our common rail engine range,’ adds Gesink.

While 110hp-plus Volvo Penta marine diesel engines – the D3 upwards – have been built since 2006 with a proprietary Electronic Vessel Control system, its smaller D1 and D2 marine diesel engines were given a hybrid solution.

This Mechanical Diesel Interface (MDI) is a black box fitted to the side of the exhaust manifold, where heat and vibration have made it somewhat temperamental.

Without the MDI, the engine simply won’t run, although it is quite straightforward to bypass.

Volvo sells an Easy Connect adapter that plugs into the J1939 socket on the MDI and feeds its data out onto a NMEA 2000 instrument network, allowing it to be visualised on the plotter or other displays.

Volvo's Easy Connect app allows you to monitor engine-specific data over Bluetooth on smart devices

Volvo’s Easy Connect app allows you to monitor engine-specific data over Bluetooth on smart devices

Other manufacturers also offer products that can do this.

Volvo offers dedicated instruments to show fuel level, temperature and voltage if you want it.

It also produces its own glass bridge touchscreen displays from 7in to 24in, although this will mainly appeal to the powerboat market.

More interesting for sailors is Volvo’s Easy Connect app available for smart devices, which allows you to monitor engine-specific data over Bluetooth thanks to the Easy Connect adapter.

Other engine manufacturers have adopted a more agricultural approach.

Beta Marine, for instance, has worked with market-leading sensor firm Actisense to build a module that plugs into the wiring loom that runs between the engine and the control panel, and feeds data into the NMEA 2000 network.

It only works with one of Beta’s more expensive C and CW Deluxe control panels, and requires a bit of splicing in of wires.

Solé also offers an NMEA 2000 converter to get analogue data from the engine into your digital instrument network.

You still need a dedicated control panel, but the SDC2000 kit even allows the engine’s alarms to be transferred to your MFD.

It is compatible with all Solé diesel engines since 2008.

France’s Nanni uses a similar NMEA adapter, but also offers a dedicated interactive display to enhance its control panel – available for all engines above 21hp.

There is a small 4in model, and larger 7in and 9in display built around Raymarine technology, with charting, radar and CHIRP sonar support.

The choice is yours

Every owner will make up their own mind on common rail injection.

It looks like the way of the future, judging by the automotive sector, but critics point out that poor quality fuel and the need for maintenance in out-of-the-way places weigh in favour of mechanical fuel systems.

It depends whether you’ve got far-flung cruising in mind, or whether you plan to stick to home waters.

Weigh up your priorities. The Yanmar’s fuel consumption is certainly better than the competition.

But the Beta offers one of the best torque curves, equating to more usable power at cruising revs.

Thinking about going electric? Click here

Either way, don’t be tempted to overpower the boat, as marine diesel engines are most efficient at around 80% of their revs.

If you want the engine to feed data onto the network, it’s best to know from the outset, so the engineer can hook the whole thing up.

That said, it’s hardly a complex job, although the necessary kit amounts to several hundred pounds in the aftermarket.

If you’re looking to re-power, the key criteria will always be the space available, and access to filters, impellers and freshwater systems for maintenance .

While there’s broad consensus about hydrogen being the fuel of the future, the path to fuel-cell propulsion is distinctly unclear.

In the meantime, alternative fuels may play an increasing part in the energy mix for combustion engines: methanol or ammonia can be stored as liquids and mixed with diesel in a combustion engine.

There are challenges to overcome, not least the nitrous oxides produced when ammonia burns, but there is research time going into just that.

Shipbuilder CMB is working with manufacturers of bigger engines to make the design tweaks to run on dual fuels; focused on the injection system.

A more immediate possibility is the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil ( HVO ) or gas-to-liquids (GLT).

HVO is essentially biodiesel and can be made from waste cooking oil, while GLT is made from natural gas and is said to burn more cleanly than diesel.

‘The advantage of mechanical injection systems is that the engine can take advantage of using low- emission alternative fuels, such as HVO and GLT, without alterations to the engine,’ adds Beta Marine CEO Andrew Growcoot.

Volvo Penta D2-50: Easy to get NMEA data from the engine

Volvo has an odd gap in its engine line-up between the 28hp D1 and the 50hp D2, which exist in both shaft and saildrive formats.

The D2 marine diesel engines run at 3,000rpm, which is pretty standard for this power rating.

In general, slower rotation makes for less noise and vibration. Both series use inline injection and feature the MDI electronic interface which has suffered from reliability problems in the past.

On the plus side, the interface makes it easy to get NMEA data out of the engine and onto your instrument network. It also opens up a good range of snazzy remote displays.

Volvo’s ergonomic electronic controls won’t work with the D2 engine, however. They are only compatible with the EVC marine diesel engines that run on common rail injection.

Volvo has excellent, if expensive, global support.

Yanmar 3JH40

Best Marine diesel engines: Yanmar 3JH40: An award-winning 40ho engine

Yanmar 3JH40: An award-winning 40ho engine

With a power output rated at 40hp, this hugely successful, award-winning engine was launched in 2018.

Its key feature is the common rail injection system which Yanmar has introduced with claims that it reduces smoke and odour to nearly nil.

This is due to the more complete combustion of the diesel fuel when injected under high pressure.

It also operates at a relatively low 3,000rpm, which makes it quieter than faster-spinning engines, and reduces vibration.

Yanmar has developed a series of digital controls for its engines. The VC10 and VC20 electronic throttles make data such as engine loading available on the network.

There are also dedicated displays like the YD42, which has a full-colour screen. Otherwise, a £350 analogue-to-digital converter will get your engine data onto the NMEA 2000 network.

There’s a saildrive option, which costs some £2,500 more than the shaft alternative.

Yanmar engines are also very well supported with servicing.

  • Power: 40hp (29.4kW)
  • Cylinders: 3
  • Displacement: 1,642cc
  • Fuel consumption at max RPM: 8.8lt/hr

Beta 43: Excellent, mid-range torque for its rating

Beta 43: Excellent, mid-range torque for its rating

Beta Marine diesel engines are based on the solid Kubota block, and represent good value, no-frills performance.

Painted a distinctive red colour, they offer flexible installation thanks to a good range of options.

This makes them well suited to repowering in tight corners.

Though the design is constantly being improved, this is a traditional mechanical engine with the minimum of electronic gimmickry.

It offers excellent mid-range torque for its rating.

The standard control panels are steadfastly analogue, although a NMEA2000 converter is available to get limited engine data onto the network.

A new digital display panel is now available, with a standard loom input and a NMEA 2000 output.

Reliable and well supported with spares, and readily serviced, these are good engines that are sold worldwide.

  • Power: 43hp
  • Displacement: 1,999cc
  • Fuel consumption at max RPM: 9.3lt/hr
  • Dry weight: 238kg

Nanni N4.43

Best Marine diesel engines: Nanni N4.43: Low rpm makes for a quieter unit

Nanni N4.43: Low rpm makes for a quieter unit

Nanni, a French-Italian brand, is well represented in the UK by AR Peachment. These distinctive blue marine diesel engines have helped make Nanni the world’s third largest marine engine supplier.

The engines are fairly traditional, with indirect mechanical fuel injection, natural aspiration and water-cooled exhaust manifold. Relatively low RPM makes for a quieter unit.

The N4.43 is in fact a de-rated version of the larger 50hp unit.

Being a mechanical engine, the N4.43 relies on an NMEA adapter to get engine data onto the network.

Though controls remain analogue, the N4.43 is compatible with a series of Nanni digital displays which start at 4in.

Support at the leisure end is not as widespread as bigger brands, but as it’s based on a Kubota engine block, it should be easy to find a competent mechanic.

  • Power: 43hp (29.4kW)
  • Displacement: 2,197cc
  • Fuel consumption at max RPM: 10.3lt/hr
  • Dry weight: 228kg

Solé Mini-44

Solé Mini-44: Decent torque at mid range

Spain’s Solé produces a very wide range of diesel marine engines, and the Mini-44 is aimed at yachts in the 10-12m LOA range.

Sam Fortescue, freelance marine journalist and former magazine editor

Sam Fortescue is a freelance marine journalist and former magazine editor who sails a Sadler 34, which has taken his family from the Caribbean to the Baltic

It looks cheaper than the competition, but Solé’s model is to quote a fixed price and not engage in the inevitable discounting of the other brands.

This is the smallest four-cylinder unit the company builds, giving quieter running but greater fuel consumption at top speed.

Though rated 42hp, it has a smaller capacity and has to work harder to achieve it.

For that reason it compares better against 38hp models.

A purely mechanical engine, it relies on cam-driven indirect fuel injection and produces decent if not outstanding torque at the mid range.

Available with an impressive range of gearboxes, including saildrive fittings, the Mini-44 is a very flexible engine with lots of options.

A very expensive converter (SDC2000 – £800) is available to transfer the engine’s analogue data into digital signals for your NMEA 2000 network.

But the control panel options, although very attractively styled, remain resolutely analogue.

Solé has decent global support, naturally focused on Europe and the Spanish-speaking world.

  • Power: 42hp (30.9kW)
  • Displacement: 1,758cc
  • Fuel consumption at max RPM: 10.4lt/hr
  • Dry weight: 175kg (w/o gearbox)

Engine Types

Now let's look at the three types of engines you'll find on powered boats: outboard, inboard and stern drive engines.

What is an Outboard Engine?

This is an outboard engine. Outboard engines are mounted on the transom of the boat, outside of the boat's hull, which is why they're called "outboards".

Outboard engines are used to both power and steer the boat. To steer an outboard you need to move the entire engine. On smaller boats, this is often done using a hand tiller, while on larger outboards a steering wheel adjusts the direction of the engine.

What is an Inboard Engine?

Inboard engines are located inside the boat's hull. Inboard engines are four-stroke automotive engines that have been modified for use on the water. These engines power a drive shaft that is connected to a propeller.

Unlike an outboard, an inboard engine does not also steer the boat. Instead, inboards have a rudder or rudders that are located behind the propeller and controlled by a steering wheel.

What is a Stern Drive Engine?

The last type of engine is the stern drive, which is sometimes called an "inboard-outboard" because it shares features of both types of engines. Similar to inboards, stern drive engines use a four-stroke automotive engine mounted on the inside of the hull to power the boat.

Like an outboard, there is a drive unit used to steer the boat. To steer a stern drive, turn the steering wheel, which then turns the drive unit, and determines the direction of the boat.

What is a Jet Drive Engine?

A Jet Drive engine uses water to propel and steer the boat. Water enters in through an intake on the bottom of the boat and is accelerated through the jet drive unit at the transom, thrusting the boat forward.

Steering is achieved by changing the direction of the stream of water as it leaves the jet unit. REMINDER - Because steering is dependent on the water jet, Jet Drive engines will lose some steering control at low speeds.

33m Mangusta motor yacht Mystere for sale - with $1 million of upgrades

The 33.2-metre Mangusta 33 fast motor yacht Mystere has joined the market with Brendan Roney of BR Marine.

Delivered by Italian builder Overmarine in 2023, the GRP yacht was designed in-house by the Mangusta design team that is also responsible for the naval architecture.

Accommodation is provided for 12 guests in five cabins, including an on-deck master, and there are quarters for a crew of up to five. The interior is predominantly finished in white and neutral tones but has splashes of colour in artworks and details. The broker pointed out that Mystere has had $1,000,000 of upgrades and customisation. Her galley is fitted with Miele appliances.

Mystere's saloon is open plan to the formal dining room forward and benefits from large panes of glass, sliding open on both sides of the dining table. The upper deck's saloon and bridge is also open plan, both deck's spaces opening out aft to on-deck seating. The main aft deck offers al fresco dining and has twin stairs leading down to the swim platform that has a proper ladder for guests to climb back aboard with.

Mystere has a sporty feel and guests can enjoy the exhilarating seating area forward of the wheelhouse – shaded by a fabric awning at low speeds or at rest – forward of which is a refreshing glass-fronted Jacuzzi pool. Up top is an "expansive" flybridge offering serene views.

The 75GT yacht for sale is powered by four Volvo Penta 1,000hp diesel engines driving her to a top speed of 25 knots and cruising speed of 21 knots. The engine warranty runs to the end of 2028.

Lying in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, Mystere is asking $14,999,000.

Everything We Know About Yamaha's Hydrogen Outboard Engine

Illustration of Yamaha's H2 Hydrogen outboard

Ben Speciale, President of Yamaha's U.S. Marine Business Unit, confirmed Yamaha's commitment to attaining carbon neutrality of its operations by 2035 and its products by 2050. Speciale went on to say, "We believe hydrogen is a viable method of achieving these goals," at the unveiling of the Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. hydrogen-powered outboard engine in Miami, Florida, on February 14, 2024. With that announcement, Yamaha joins other companies working on hydrogen-powered vehicles .

Yamaha's hydrogen-powered outboard engine, dubbed the H2, is part of a prototype project announced in December of 2023 that includes fuel system engineering by Roush CleanTech, part of the same organization as Roush Racing, and a modified 26-foot boat built by Regulator Marine. Joan Maxwell, President of Regulator Marine, said the project is important for testing hydrogen as an outboard engine fuel source, explaining, "If we don't look for a new source, we won't find a new source."

The H2's hydrogen fuel system requires large hydrogen storage tanks, one of the cons associated with hydrogen-powered vehicles , which the boat's hull must accommodate. Maxwell admits the Hydrogen tanks are larger than she envisioned at first, occupying valuable space in the prototype hull that typically houses fish boxes and marine head facilities.

Roush's Matt Van Benschoten, Vice President of Advance Engineering, said, "Yamaha is trying to determine if hydrogen can successfully be used in this market." In support of the prototype, scheduled to begin testing during the summer of 2024, Roush is providing the design and integration of the hydrogen fuel system, as well as safety analysis.

Yamaha's H2 outboard engine

Detail view of the Yamaha H2 outboard

Yamaha's H2 hydrogen-powered outboard engine uses hydrogen instead of gasoline in its combustion chambers. While this technology is a departure from the systems found in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (HFCV) driving the streets of California, it's more like the internal combustion engine we're accustomed to rather than battery electric vehicle (BEV) power.

The H2 hydrogen outboard is a derivative of Yamaha's XTO Offshore outboard engines. The XTO Offshore outboard's 5.6-liter V8 gasoline-engine produces up to 450 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful Yamaha boat motors ever made . Hydrogen's low volumetric energy density means the H2 will produce slightly less horsepower than the XTO Offshore using the same 5.6-liter displacement.

Examples from Cummins, a reputable diesel engine innovator, demonstrate the loss of power by comparing horsepower ratings of two 6.7-liter internal combustion engines, one gasoline powered and the other using hydrogen. The gasoline-powered Cummins 6.7-liter is rated at up to 325 horsepower compared to the hydrogen version with its 290-horsepower rating.

If the 10-percent power loss of the Cummins example is seen in the H2 outboard, it could still produce in excess of 400 horsepower. That output would put it in the ranks as one of the most powerful outboard boat engines available and with zero carbon emissions.

Sunseeker Ocean 156

Unquestionably the biggest boat making its global premiere at the Southampton show is Sunseeker’s all-new Ocean 156. Unlike last year’s Ocean 182, which started life as an Ocean 90 before having an enclosed hardtop tacked on top, the 156 was designed from the ground up as a tri-deck model. The result is a more considered and, we would argue, better looking craft. Given that it’s also considerably shorter with an LOA of 82ft 6in (the 156 in its name refers to its Gross Tonnage), that’s no mean feat.

As with all Ocean models, it’s also unusually beamy. A maximum width of 26ft 6in exactly matches that of the Sunseeker 95 Yacht and the result is a really spacious craft, relative to its length, with a broad choice of layouts. Crucially, that includes the option of a main deck owner’s cabin with all the benefits that incurs, such as bigger windows, better views, quieter nights, increased privacy and direct access to the bow lounge. That still leaves room below for four more double cabins, including a large full-beam suite amidships.

The alternative is to keep the main deck as a vast open-plan entertaining zone with the galley at the centre of the action and a variety of dining, seating and bar options filling the spaces on either side of it.

Fairline Targa 40

Southampton will be playing host to one of the world’s most exciting sportscruisers. With lofty topsides, an upright bow and a wide beam that extends a good way forward, Fairline tells us this boat is 20% more voluminous than the old Targa 38. But while it’s clearly designed as a genuine mini-cruiser, the styling is also a delight. The snub-nosed semi-plumb bow comes with backlit stainless steel logos; the foredeck sunpad is framed by fibreglass ‘spears’; and the long plunging hull windows are dramatically mirrored in what appears to be a virtually mullion-free superstructure.

On the inside, the practical ingenuity of the cockpit is also brilliant. The aft deck is split by a pair of broadly symmetrical sunpad-cum-bench units. There’s space for a partially inflated 2.7m tender inside the port unit, as well as a hinged table to keep the deck space clear. On the starboard side, a ‘power-down beach club balcony’ extends the cockpit outwards and to make very best use of that, there’s a bench that can be reversed to face out across the water.

yacht boat engine

Princess X95 Vista

The largest boat at the show is also one of the most interesting. As an adaptation of the starkly distinctive X95, the vast interior spaces on both the open-plan, helm-free main deck and that trademark ‘Super Flybridge’ still cover virtually the entire length of the yacht. It still claims to deliver 10% more outdoor space and 40% more indoor volume than a traditional motor yacht of the same length.

And it’s still the same pioneering platform that inspired so many other builders to follow suit with their own interpretations of the long-range, explorer-style sub-100ft ‘superyacht’. But the Vista variant updates the concept in a couple of ways, firstly with a new full-length single-piece hull window, and secondly, with a new foredeck design that opens up the bow structure to provide uprated views, both through the main deck’s forward window and the exterior foredeck seating.

yacht boat engine

Though second in size to the flagship 46, the new 41 is probably the best boat in the entire fleet. Modest innovations include plenty of firsts for Targa – proper hull windows, bonded pilothouse glazing, larger side doors and cockpit boarding gates. But it’s the fact that the 41 is playful, as well as practical, that’s so pleasing.

The cockpit, for instance, features symmetrical L-shaped seating sections at the transom, opposite an aft-facing bench at the back end of the pilothouse, all ramped up with the option of flip-down seats, drop-down tables and sunbed infills.

There’s another sunbed forward plus a convertible C-shaped dinette up on the flybridge – and you even get space to sleep up to seven people, thanks to two cabins and a convertible wheelhouse dinette.

yacht boat engine

Norway’s Marex will be taking its award-winning flagship to the Southampton Boat Show in its optional (and for most people, preferable) ‘Gourmet Cruiser’ guise. This uses a massive aft galley that dominates the internal space and projects out into the cockpit with an optional bar.

You can spec this boat with the more conventional internal saloon of the ‘Scandinavia’ variant instead but rigged like this, the kitchen is very much the hub of the dayboating zone with plenty of space to cook and eat, plus four huge chest fridges in and around the galley area, so you can spend long spells at sea without returning to shore.

Back aft, the big cockpit is hemmed in securely and lined on all sides by bench seats, creating an alfresco lounge big enough for ten. You can turn this into a four-season space with tensioned canvases; and the accommodation is flexible too, thanks to a two or three-cabin layout with a pair of cleverly conceived bathrooms.

Whether you want IPS drives, sterndrives or V-drives, the 440 again offers plenty of choice, but what is really likely to put a smile on your face is the way it combines classical elegance with striking design intelligence and delivers it all in a package you would feel very proud to own.

yacht boat engine

Nord Star 33+

Southampton will host the first outboard-powered Nord Star 33+ to hit UK shores – and like the inboard variant, it looks like a very cruise-friendly boat. It features deep, wide walkaround decks with opening side gates built into the railings amidships, plus sliding doors on both sides of the pilothouse. The tinted windows are all bonded in, helping narrow the mullions for uprated views from the main saloon – and in the optional ‘Cruiser Layout’, the starboard galley comes with a full-height fridge, a gas-free stove and wide aft patio doors.

Down below, a striking full-beam mid cabin with twin beds and hanging storage is neatly accessed via a hinged seat and there’s also a permanent double in the forward cabin. In Cruiser form, it’s the central section that really shines. By putting the galley up top, it frees up the space for a wetroom on one side and a starboard heads on the other. Alternatively, you can spec both sides with a loo and shower; use the port compartment as a walk-in wardrobe; or you can opt for the standard fit-out with the galley below and larger dinette in the saloon.

yacht boat engine

Absolute Navetta 48

The smallest of Absolute’s Navetta range does a superb job for a sub 50-footer. As on the larger models, the plumb bow, raised foredeck, generous beam and trawler-style superstructure mean plenty of volume for a boat of this length. It’s big enough to sleep six adults in remarkable comfort, thanks to a pair of generous midships guest cabins and a supremely bright and spacious owner’s bow cabin.

Pocket doors and long, panoramic windows make the space feel very generous, and the bed is set on the diagonal for maximum floor space around it. That still leaves room for a couple of decent bathrooms and an additional ensuite crew cabin that you can access directly from the stern platform.

yacht boat engine

Having forged its reputation over the last 50 years through the creation of premium ocean-going sailing yachts, Rustler’s first ever motor boat will be taking centre stage in Southampton. Designed very much in the fashion of a classical gentleman’s launch, it uses a sheltered main deck saloon with twin helm seats that back onto a fully featured galley. Opposite that, a U-shaped dinette can be converted into a third double berth to supplement the owner’s bow cabin and the midships guest double.

From here, aft doors lead to a sociable outdoor cockpit with L-shaped seating in each quarter and a wet bar with additional seating forward. A central through-transom door gives access to the swim platform and further forward, side gates and walkaround decks make onboard movement equally easy.

yacht boat engine

Cormate Chase 35

Making their UK debuts in Southampton will be a couple of extremely attractive new Cormates. The Utility 27 is an ultra rapid high-end weekender with lovely looks – but with its extra length, day space and weekend cruising potential, it’s the new Chase 35 that is likely to be the bigger draw.

Extended by a foot with a revised hull for extra efficiency and stability, the new boat comes with the extraordinary option of twin 565hp Mercury Racing engines for a claimed 82-knot top end. But such is the efficiency of the hulls that even the basic twin TDI V6 270 diesels will deliver performance in the region of 46 knots, alongside cruising efficiency of less than 1.2 litres per nautical mile.

It achieves that by means of a narrow beam (around 25% of the overall length), a hull monostep and stiff, lightweight vacuum-infused construction that sees this boat tipping the scales at just 3,000kg.

yacht boat engine

Greenline 45 Fly

This is the first chance for showgoers to see the 45 Fly on UK shores since it was launched back in 2019. And we reckon this is Greenline’s most appealing boat yet.

Much of that comes down to its clever design and packaging – it looks good inside and out with a lovely bright saloon and aft galley on the main deck and three good cabins below with exceptional levels of natural light, especially in the forward VIP.

There’s also some smart thinking on the engineering side with a wide range of Yanmar or Volvo engines to choose from and the option for varying degrees of electric hybrid power. Even the base boat comes with a li-ion battery pack plus an inverter and solar panels on the saloon roof to give you mains power at anchor without the need for a noisy, smelly generator.

yacht boat engine

Balt Yachts SunCamper 31

Possibly not the fastest, prettiest or most luxurious boat at the show, but we challenge you to find a better value one than this SunCamper 31. Built by Polish yard Balt Yachts, which also manufactures craft for some much more prestigious brands, it looks like being a great little waterways cruiser for buyers on a budget.

Powered by either a single petrol outboard or small shaftdrive diesel engine, it should be just as cheap to run as it is to buy. For as little as £129,226 inc VAT you get a really bright, spacious wheelhouse with a well-equipped galley and convertible dinette, as well as sleeping space for an astonishing seven people. There’s a double cabin forward with an extra single berth under the saloon and another double aft – and we’re told the heads compartment has lots of headroom too.

yacht boat engine

Show visitors in search of a boat that marries offshore potency with stylistic flair would do well to check out the new Sargo flagship. In addition to the promise of a soft, dry ride on long offshore passages from that rigorously proven Sargo hull, the new 45 makes everything really simple.

From the easy-access fender stowage and the impeccable helm station to the wide-gauge fuel fillers and the side-opening engine bay, the basics have been really well executed on this flagship model.

In terms of its cruising credentials, it comes with a convertible dinette, an ingenious ensuite mid-cabin, a pair of forward cabins and a generous day heads, so you could feasibly sleep eight people on this boat in really decent comfort.

yacht boat engine

Enjoying its UK debut at the Southampton Boat Show is the smallest of Fjord’s elegant daycruiser fleet. It comes as standard with twin helm seats offset to starboard behind the large central console. There’s also a large aft bench and a big open deck to make the most of the boat’s fluid zero-step walkaround design. As a high-end Med-style party platform it’s a very easy boat to customise too.

There are six alternative upper deck layouts, revolving around the use of aft benches, a galley and a T-top. There are also two lower deck arrangements that subtly tweak the base layout’s bow cabin and starboard heads. But for us, this boat looks best with three helm seats, backing onto a transverse galley, with a large central dinette and an aft sunpad.

yacht boat engine

Windy 29 Huracán

New to the Southampton Boat Show will be one of the smallest Windy boats to inhabit the brand’s classical (and still much sought-after) sportscruiser format. Slotting neatly between the 27 Solano and the 32 Grand Zonda, the Windy Huracán 29 ticks all the usual Windy boxes with a step-free deep-vee hull, a choice of petrol or diesel inboard engines, a deep, wide cockpit and an aggressively raked foredeck with a step-through screen.

The deck layout is also classical Windy, thanks to an asymmetrical cockpit arrangement, featuring a pair of rotating helm seats that back onto a starboard dinette and a facing corner seat to port. Behind that, a sunpad adjoins the aft end of the dinette, with a sliding backrest for extra flexibility.

yacht boat engine

Prestige F4.9

What was originally the Prestige F4 has become the Prestige F4.9 to better reflect its 49ft length – but it’s good to see that the boat remains the same because there’s some ingenuity to the deck arrangements that makes this latest-generation Prestige flybridge cruiser feel extremely gratifying.

The ‘Ocean View Galley’, for instance, adopts a transverse layout way aft, enabling it to straddle the zone between saloon and cockpit to great effect, while also putting your eyeline at the same level as that of the seated saloon guests on the other side of the low-level glass screen. But there’s even better thinking at the bow, where the raised forward cabin takes great advantage of the extra breadth in the upper, less tapered, section of the hull, while creating natural separation from the two guest cabins further down and aft.

yacht boat engine

Make no mistake. The 68 Fly on Azimut’s Southampton show stand is a fully-fledged luxury cruising machine, brimming with light and space, opulent upholstery, designer detailing and sensible storage solutions.

But it’s also a proper driving machine. The slippery medium-V Pierluigi Ausonio hull is coupled with a pair of Volvo Penta 1,000hp IPS-1350s for a 32-knot top end and a really comfortable long-legged cruise at speeds as low as 19 knots. The weight is also kept good and deep, thanks to the use of carbon fibre in the superstructure, hardtop and deck mouldings and the agility of the handling fully reflects that.

It’s particularly pleasing then that when you step away from the helm, there’s such remarkable space and volume on offer…

yacht boat engine

Beneteau Antares 12

After nearly five decades in production, the capacity of the Antares line to imbue modestly sized platforms with big versatility is well known – and that’s nowhere more evident than on the flagship 42-footer.

While its spacious flybridge, expandable cockpit and beamy bow lounge all function very effectively as independent open-air dayboating zones, the lower deck is pretty well arranged for extended cruising too.

The owner’s bow cabin and the primary twin cabin both come with ensuite bathrooms and, while the latter is shared as a day heads, there’s still space for a modular third cabin that can be specced as a single berth, a double berth or a dedicated storage room.

yacht boat engine

Quarken 35 Cabin

After much anticipation, the Quarken 35 Cabin has done exactly what fans of the award-winning 27 had hoped. It features a twin-stepped hull with a fine entry and a flared bow, very much in line with previous models, alongside a pair of Yamaha F300s for a top speed of around 46 knots.

Like its smaller sibling, it also features an asymmetrical wheelhouse to maximise internal space, while leaving room for a deeper, wider side deck to starboard. But with its extra scale come all sorts of additional benefits. In the pilothouse, for instance, the forward-raked windscreen, plunging windows and large sunroof make both brightness and visibility very strong; and with an aft door, as well as a side door, movement around it is first-rate too.

yacht boat engine

Saxdor 400 GTC

Saxdor’s 400GTC made a brief appearance at the British Motor Yacht Show earlier in the year but Southampton will still be the first chance for more occasional showgoers to see it properly.

It’s well worth making a beeline for Saxdor’s marina berths, if only to witness the 400’s brilliantly clever convertible wheelhouse in action. With huge sliding glass doors on both sides in addition to drop-down side platforms, bi-fold rear doors, a lifting rear window and a large central sunroof, it transforms from a fully enclosed pilothouse boat to a big open party platform in a matter of seconds.

It’s no slouch either; when we tested it last month its stepped hull and twin 400hp Mercury outboard engines pushed it to a top speed of 43 knots and would have gone quicker still if the wind and water had been a bit kinder. The choppy conditions did, however, give us the chance to explore its seakeeping manners and despite all those moving parts, it acquitted itself remarkably well, punching confidently through the waves without excessive shake, rattle and roll.

Perhaps best of all, prices start at £323,995 in the UK – surprisingly reasonable for a 40ft boat with so many strings to its bow.

Mercury Racing Debuts New 150- and 200HP Models at 2024 Cannes Boat Show

  • September 11, 2024

Mercury Racing 150R outboard

Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation and Mercury Racing launched two new Racing outboards on the opening day of the Cannes Yachting Festival. In addition, this week Mercury also announced new color options for the 150hp FourStroke, and introduced a new mid-range Jet outboard engine.

New Mercury Racing 150R/200R

During a media event at the boat show in Cannes, Mercury Racing announced the all-new 150R and 200R outboard engines, built on a V6 platform.

The new 150R and 200R are all about torque. Displacing 3.4 liters, these V6 outboard engines are designed to deliver exceptional hole shot and acceleration without the weight of a V8. Transient Spark Technology electronically adjusts ignition timing as needed, producing additional torque for faster hole shot and acceleration. At full throttle, the 150R develops up to 6000 RPM, while the 200R tops out at 6400 rpm.

These outboards come with the full suite of the Mercury Marine’s V6 platform features, including Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), which gives drivers precise, seamless engine control. Fuel economy also is optimized through built-in, GPS-enabled features like Mercury’s Active Trim, Adaptive Speed Control, and Advanced Range Optimization, which delivers precise fueling throughout the operating range. Where other performance outboards require 89 octane fuel, the 150R and 200R are designed to operate on 87 octane, saving money at the pump.

The 150R and 200R also are equipped with a larger, 85-amp alternator, versus competitor engines’ 44- to 55-amp output. Mercury’s built-in battery management system ensures that even with a full suite of electronics on board, owners always have enough electrical power for their needs.

“With the new 150R and 200R, we are bringing Mercury Racing DNA to our V6 outboard range. When it comes to bottom-end torque, these engines are best-in-class,” said Jeff Broman, category director, Mercury Racing. “Add the many digital features provided by Mercury’s V6 platform, and the competition cannot match them.”

The 200R is offered with two different gearcase configurations. Weighing just 469 lbs., the 200R Torque Master is designed for competitive bass boats and other performance craft in the 80- to 85-mph range. The 200R Sport Master, at 489 lbs., is built for high performance boats running at speeds of 85 mph to well over 100 mph. The 150R is available with shaft lengths of 20 and 25 inches, while the 200R Torque Master and Sport Master have a 20-inch shaft.

“In recent years, Mercury Marine and Mercury Racing have raised the bar for innovation in the outboard engine market by introducing new V8 and V10 models at the top of our range. Now, we have responded to customer demand by expanding our V6 offerings. With the 150R and 200R, our customers have a wider range of high-tech, sophisticated outboards to choose from to power their boating adventures,” said John Buelow, president, Mercury Marine.

New Mercury FourStroke 150hp Cold Fusion, Warm Fusion Color Options & All-New FourStroke 105hp Jet

Also announced this week, the Mercury 150hp FourStroke outboard is now available in Cold Fusion and Warm Fusion White in addition to Phantom Black. The new colors were added in response to demand from saltwater boaters who want to minimize the appearance of salt spray on their outboard and keep it cooler to the touch in the hot sun. In addition, this gives more owners the ability to coordinate their engine with their hull color.

Also expanding Mercury’s mid-range lineup is the all-new FourStroke 105hp Jet . This jet outboard engine, built on the FourStroke 150hp platform, delivers 105 horsepower. This puts it at the head of the Mercury jet family, which also includes the Jet 25-40hp and Jet 60-80hp. The new FourStroke 105hp Jet is the ideal solution for boaters and anglers who want to navigate safely in shallower water while still enjoying the intuitive operation and reliability of Mercury FourStroke technology.

Fast all year round commuter

We introduce the

Experience luxurious comfort in a floating home designed around your adventures on all waters. An evolution of the classic Coupé, offering unparalleled versatility for extended voyages.

With the 495 Concept, Nimbus has officially stepped into the explorer segment and created a true "voyager" - a vessel for epic experiences and long-distance exploration. The 495 Concept defines new boundaries for possible experiences and establishes a new standard that makes the Nordic coupé boat relevant on the international market, above all in the Mediterranean, in the USA and in the Nordics.

Nimbus 495 Virtual Walk-Through

Follow Joacim Gustavsson, Chief Designer at Nimbus Group, on an in-depth virtual walk through of the new 495, the design process and the ideas behind the concept.

495 Concept - An island of its own

The changes in travelling patterns and holiday habits over the past few years have reinforced many people’s need for their own free zone, a sanctuary with all the comfort and safety needed to be able to spend the holiday in your own homeland or own continent.

Boats are like small worlds – society in miniature – with people and stories travelling from one harbour to the next. The sea is an element that both connects and separates people.

The primary objective of the Nimbus 495 Concept has been to create an expedition vessel – a “voyager” if you like. For this reason, the tank capacity has been dimensioned in order to be able to cover great distances but also to be able to rest calmly in a natural harbour for a long time without worrying about the electricity supply, a source of fresh water or “black water capacity”.

The Nimbus 495 Concept provides the potential to go anywhere and live on board comfortably for many weeks – whether you want to set off on a great adventure or holiday in your own cozy archipelago.

One of the key properties of the boat’s design is that it is just as easy and forgiving to handle for two people in a demanding Nordic archipelago as it is comfortable and safe for a couple or a family who want to head off on a long voyage of discovery in the Mediterranean or the east coast of the USA. That is why we have also referred to the boat as “an island of its own” in the development work.

Since a boat like the 495 Concept caters for a certain customer group with much experience, clearly defined requirements, wishes, dreams and needs, we will be able to carry out extensive customizations in partnership with the customer and in line with the customer’s specifications, says Mats Jacobsson, Technical Director at Nimbus Group.

Designing for the greatest voyage

With the 495 Concept we want to magnify the coupé concept, while further consolidating Nimbus’s heritage from earlier and existing coupé models.

Maximizing Opportunities

With the 495 Concept, we want to grow the coupé concept, while at the same time build on the legacy of Nimbus’ previous and existing coupé models. The salon is the very epicenter of the boat, the heart of the model. That’s where we live on board. That’s where we have the helm, the dining area, the social lounge and the galley, says Joacim Gustavsson, Chief designer at Nimbus Group Sweden AB.

The goal of the Nimbus 495 Coupé is to create a floating home that is both comfortable and safe, allowing you to feel embraced and want to stay on board for an extended period of time. The boat’s design is focused on optimizing function, as evident in the large rear windows in the salon. These windows were added to enhance the experience in the galley, which is an open, seamless, and integrated part of the entire social area on the aft deck and in the salon. The integration of these windows helps to create an inviting and open atmosphere that makes it more pleasant to spend time in the galley and social areas.

495 Flybridge

An island on its own.

“With the 495 Concept we want to magnify the coupé concept, while further consolidating Nimbus’s heritage from earlier and existing coupé models. “

“The basic concept of the Nimbus 495 Coupé has a heritage it needs to follow. We want to take certain form elements with us as recognition of this,” says Joacim Gustavsson.

' data-src=

Dynamic Positioning System

The Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) is the ideal solution when the driver needs to maintain the boat’s heading and position temporarily, such as when preparing for docking, waiting to refuel, or for a bridge or lock to open. It allows the crew to ready fenders and lines without stress, and gives the driver ample time to plan the next maneuver safely, even in deep waters.

In DPS mode, repositioning the boat is effortless—just tap the joystick to adjust the boat’s position or rotation, which is especially useful when wind and currents complicate manual control. Engaging DPS is as simple as pressing a button on the joystick control, securely holding the boat in a precise position. Disengaging is equally straightforward, either by moving the control levers or pressing the button again.

Boating the Scandinavian way

We feel that there are fewer and fewer boats with experience-based designs and solutions adapted to local conditions. Nimbus has a long tradition of building coupé boats. We wish to fully realize this potential with the 495 Concept.

In the Nordic region, we have a tradition spanning several thousand years of building boats for archipelagos and local adaptations. It gives us a sense of perspective of the experience on which we are basing things here in Scandinavia knowing that the timber for the “Oseberg” ship was felled in 819. The more than 1100-year old boats from Denmark and Norway are regarded as “phylogenetically” fully developed. This means that design and the art of building had come so far that there was hardly any room for improvement. Later scientific tank-testing of models has shown that the hull lines in the Viking boats were almost optimal and this kind of knowledge was not achieved overnight.

The modern traditional clinker-built boat shares its DNA with the Viking ships. Through the slow evolution from a straight keel to boats with sterns that turn upwards and outwards, the traditional boat acquired what we now call its natural shape. And it turns out in practice that what appears natural, is very often the right things at sea.

It is our experience that boats built for a coastal landscape, with archipelagos, islands, islets, fjords and wave patterns and current conditions that can vary greatly within just a few nautical miles, have qualities that work in all waters. By translating all this experience into practice in the 495 Concept, it is our ambition to create a boat based on the best solutions that have been developed through experience of using boats in the Nordic coastal landscape. And for the 495 Concept to be an ideal vessel for those who want to cover great distances and to be out at sea or in the archipelago for a long period of time.

With the 495, the Nordic coupé boat will become relevant in the international market, particularly in the Mediterranean, the USA and the Nordic region. And with this, Nimbus is also undertaking a journey into another segment of boating. We can do this because we feel certain that boats that work in the archipelago will work anywhere.

The Nimbus 495 Concept has the space, comfort and capacity to be a home on the sea for a long period of time. To be an island of its own.
