Yacht designed in Free!ship

Completely free and open source

Subdivision modeling to design any hull shape

Can export designs in a range of file formats

Can submit support and feature requests

Positive reviews from users

Can be tricky for novices to get used to

Not available on Mac

Unlike most of the boat building software on our list, Free!ship isn’t developed by a company, but rather by an individual called Marven with a desire to make boat design accessible to anyone.

Free!ship is a surface modeling program for designing ships and yachts, using subdivision surfaces modeling rather than NURBs, providing the freedom to design hulls of any shape.

Available on Windows and Linux, you can get started with this free CAD software by automatically generating a basic boat structure to use as a template. You can then easily use the nodes on the structure, as well as a variety of tools like curve, split, collapse, and insert plane, to reshape the design to your liking.

You need to fill in certain parameters, such as:

  • Boat length
  • Beam length
  • Longitudinal and vertical direction

Once you’ve done that, you can view your boat design in four different perspectives and every angle to help you finalize your structure.

Free!ship offers the option to fill out support requests, feature requests, and report bugs. However, bear in mind that design beginners may be better off with a professional free ship design software that has more support options and tutorials available, as you don’t get any training with Free!ship.

Buying Guide – Things to consider when choosing boat software

Buying Guide-Boat Design Software

Type of Boat

Boats come in all different shapes and sizes, and some software are specially built for designing certain types of boats. For example, Bearboat SP is primarily geared towards kayak designing, while Sailcut is for sailboats.

On the other hand, general 3D modeling software like Fusion 360 and Solidworks are more flexible, so you could use it as a Yacht design software and for other types of boats. The benefits of this are the increased flexibility and beginner-friendliness, but these general programs can lack some of the more specialist features that the likes of Bearboat SP and Sailcut have.

Compatibility

The device you’re using is going to have an impact on what naval architecture software you use, as most programs only work on certain operating systems.

In fact, the majority of boat design software are only compatible with Windows. If you’re looking for a boat design software for Mac, Linux, or iPad, you may be best off using a more general purpose 3D modeling software like Fusion 360 or SketchUp.

3D Rendering & Graphic Quality

Free programs like Free!ship, Sailcut, and Bearboat SP are all great for creating precise boat designs at no expense, but in terms of graphics and 3D model rendering, they’re all very basic.

Yachts rendered in Solidworks and SketchUp

This isn’t unusual when it comes to free programs, and if you’re not bothered about graphics then it’s no issue. However, if you do want to create higher quality models and renderings – which is especially important if you’re a student or aspiring professional boat designer – then you’ll need a program that provides this, such as Solidworks or Autoship.

Usability & Training

Boat design isn’t exactly a simple process, so if you’re a complete beginner, you’ll want a software that’s easier to get to grips with.

The free boat design software we’ve covered are all fairly simple to use, but the level of intuitiveness and support varies. If you’re a complete newbie to computer design, you may want to go for a widely used modeling software like SketchUp or Fusion 360, both of which boast great support, large communities, and more tutorials than specialist boat structural design software.

Budget & Free Trial

The price of boat design software can vary a lot, from free programs to expensive professional solutions like Solidworks and Autoship that can cost thousands, so bear this in mind. Many paid boat design software offer free trials, so you should definitely take advantage of this to try a program out.

What software is best for basic boat design?

Free!ship, Delftship, and Sailcut are all popular free software that allow you to create basic boat designs.

How do you design a yacht?

If you want to design yachts, the first step is to find a high quality yacht designing software such as Solidworks or Autoship.

How do you become a boat architect / ship designer?

To be a boat architect or ship designer you need to first obtain a relevant degree, such as a BEng or MEng in naval architecture.

How much do yacht architects make?

Yacht and naval architects can make anywhere from $60,000 to $150,000 depending on their experience and position, with the average salary around $75,000.

Autoship, Solidworks, Maxsurf, and OrcaFlex are all popular marine design software that are used in professional ship design.

To become a boat designer you first need a degree in a relevant subject, such as naval architecture, ship science, or marine technology.

The best way to learn how to make a boat hull in Solidworks is by watching one the boast hull design tutorial provided by Solidworks Product Manager Mark Biasotti.

The first step to designing a yacht is finding a suitable CAD software, such as Solidworks or Fusion 360.

Lightning CAD Dock Designer is one of the most popular boat dock design software.

Integrated Naval Architecture Software               for all Types of Vessels

Maxsurf Naval Architecture Software provides integrated tools for hull modelling and optimisation, comprehensive stability, motions & resistance prediction, structural modelling, structural analysis, and export to vessel detailing.

What vessels are designed using Maxsurf Naval Architecture Software?

Any vessel may be designed in MAXSURF

Maxsurf is typically used to design:

Workboats: general purpose, dive boats, tugs, barges, fire boats, etc.

Fast Ferries:  Monohull, catamaran, trimaran, notable examples from Austal, Incat Crowther, Southerly Designs, One2Three, Damen..

Patrol:  Patrol and Coastguard vessels, Border protection, Fisheries protection, etc

Defense: Anzac frigate, Littoral Combatant, etc

Offshore: Supply vessels, Heavy lift etc, Windfarm maintenance/support

Yachts: Motor luxury yachts, Sailing yachts, production yachts, personal leisure craft (kayaks, sailboards, surfboards, etc), America’s cup sailing yachts,

Ships: VLCC, plate modelling on larger vessels, Container ships, General cargo, Dredgers

MAXSURF Advantages

Ensure hull fairness and suitability for construction Modeler is focused on providing the best hull modelling tools – it is not a generic NURBS surface modeler. This helps ensure that vessels are fair and suitable for construction. Some other modelling tools hide the detail – they look fine on a 28” screen but are not smooth and fair at full scale. Modeler has a wide range of naval-architecture specific tools: sectional area curve, parametric transformation, upright hydrostatics, export to naval-architecture-specific 3rd party software etc. Improve design with accurate performance prediction Maxsurf has a range of efficient and accurate performance prediction tools: Resistance , sailing velocity prediction , ship response to waves Verify compliance with stability regulations Compliance with statutory stability requirements can be verified with Stability . A full range of GZ-based stability criteria can be evaluated. Most common codes are included but full customised user-criteria may also be added. Optimize vessel design for competing requirements Maxsurf’s range of tools enables naval architects to explore design alternatives quickly, be this manually or using 3rd party formal optimization tools. Maxsurf’s automation interface allows users to automate design evaluation from other tools such as Microsoft Excel, Friendship Systems CASES, etc. Collaborate with others and exchange data without errors Maxsurf uses a common design file system which is easily transferred to other users or incorporated into a document management / version control system such as ProjectWise. Bentley’s CONNECT capabilities further enhance collaboration. In addition, the parametric nature of the vessel design (for example tank and compartment definition in Stability or structural element definition in Structure) allows for concurrent design: Once the general design of the hullform and main dimensions are fixed in Modeler, tanks/compartments/structure can all be defined and then easily updated (simply recalculate the components) whilst the final hull fairing is taking place. Easy to learn and master, with intuitive user interface All the applications in Maxsurf have a standard Microsoft Windows user interface with a similar look and feel across all the applications, which makes them easy to learn and use, and easy to pick-up if used infrequently.

Description.

  • Reviews (0)

PROLINES was originally created in the late 1980’s with the creation of the very first IBM PC Computers and has been in constant development and upgrade since that time. There are over 3000 installations of PROLINES around the world that range from Hobby to Professional Yacht Designers and Naval Architects. PROLINES has also become a standard for Civil Engineers at Universities and Colleges across the USA who each year design Concrete Canoe’s to test their skills both physically and from an engineering perspective.

PROLINES was the first program to introduce the concept of Parametric Hull Design. By choosing a hull type and entering a few basic hull dimensions a hull can be created in seconds. This starting point hull is then easy to change and modify to achieve the desired characteristics. This concept of entering “hull parameters” has been adopted across the industry.

PROLINES internally uses NURB (Non Uniform Rational B-Splines) mathematics to define a hull surface shape rather than attempting to create individual stations or waterlines and some how blend or fair those shapes together. PROLINES NURBS mathematics allows virtually any conceivable hull shape to be created and exported as STL, DXF, IGES, GHS GF1, VPP and other file formats.

Calculations – PROLINES generates Wave and Friction Drag estimates for displacement mode hulls, Hydrostatics, Intact Stability, Hull Weights Table, Curve of Area, Curve of Wetted Lengths.

Integration with HydroComp NavCad Propulsion and Drag computation software – If you are a user of HydroComp NavCad, PROLINES 8 PRO will directly export an STL file and special script file that will directly call NavCad and pass it the PROLINES hull file. This allows you to continuously evaluate hull performance during the PROLINES 8 PRO design process. See the NavCad Integration Screen in the image gallery.

Editing Tools – PROLINES provides extensive Editing functions that permit fairing and detailed local chines. The Visual Vertex Editor, Simple Mouse Drag, Right Click to set Offsets, Spline Weight, Move Entire Rows or Columns of Control Vertices, Isolate a Single Row or Column of Control Points, Set Spline Tension in Station or Waterline Direction and many more

Smooth sailing with the next generation of yachts

Sports Yacht in development. Photo credit: Princess Yachts.

The marine industry is undergoing major changes that are impacting the design, engineering and manufacturing of all types of seagoing vessels. For instance, the class ranges of next generation yachts and pleasure boats is growing and they are becoming more complex . Demand for models that are more fuel efficient, longer range and higher performance is increasing . The decisions on material mix and associated costs are a big deal where light weighting is a concern and higher quality is driving the buyer decision process. These changes pose new challenges that must be addressed in order to succeed in the fast changing marine industry.

Oyster Yachts: Increasing efficiency by adopting a standard digital platform

Leading yacht and boat builders across the world are addressing these challenges with engineering software from the Siemens Digital Industries Software. Oyster Yachts, the luxury British boatbuilder,  designs, builds, delivers and supports 50- to 120-foot blue-water sailboats capable of sailing safely anywhere in the world. Until 2020, they were using a range of software and a variety of file storage methods. Craig Bulmer, Lead Mechanical Design Engineer identified one of the challenges: ”It became clear that we needed a standard platform so we could improve the integrity of our data,”. As a result, Oyster Yachts went through a formal selection process and this led to implementing NX™ software for product design and Teamcenter® software for data management. “We are very happy because we have already gained so much of an advantage from using NX for modeling, mechanical routing, surfacing, and large assembly handling,” says Bulmer. “We can also see future potential; for example, we intend to use NX for laminate overlays.”

Princess Yachts elegantly balances attention to detail and speed with NX and Teamcenter

Princess Yachts , based in southwest England, exemplifies the international standards of excellence set by the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) family of companies to which it belongs.  The company is renowned for graceful hulls that are both agile and efficient, and interiors that exude quality and style and are cleverly resolved. Founder David King explains the appeal of a Princess yacht: “We have a product that performs in all conditions and is timeless in its good looks. For Princess, every aspect of a boat has to be thought through and resolved, with elegance and without compromise.” The only way to maintain a high rate of production and advance the highest standards of quality is to utilize technology to facilitate the development process. Princess has a long-standing partnership with Siemens Digital Industries Software, and uses  NX™ software  for computer-aided design (CAD) and Teamcenter ® software for storing information and managing workflows. Rob Coleman, the company’s development operations manager, says “NX gives us speed, efficiency and design freedom, and Teamcenter enables us to control information. We can all view a complex product design and make sense of it.”

Simulation for marine applications

SimScale enables marine engineers and designers to test, validate, and optimize their designs through CFD, FEA, and thermal analysis.

Being an integral part of the design process, from concept to product release and certifications, Computer-Aided Engineering is an indispensable tool in the Marine industry. Industrial applications are highly demanding in single-phase as well as multiphase CFD techniques. Several rapid simulation techniques have been developed, specifically to enhance the integration and performance of CFD and FEA tools in the marine industry. SimScale’s cloud-based tools are recurrently applied to solve problems in the domains of computational fluid dynamics, structural, conjugate heat transfer, and thermal simulations.

ship hull design and simulation

Predicting Ship Hull Resistance

The ship hull resistance is the primary factor influencing fuel efficiency in ships. The shape optimization of the hull to predict and reduce resistance is hence indispensable in the shipbuilding process. SimScale provides a 100% cloud-based simulation platform to help with this process. The KCS ship hull, widely used as a benchmark in the shipbuilding industry, has been successfully simulated with SimScale’s CFD solution.

Predicting Ship Propeller Performance

The propulsive efficiency of ship propellers can be significantly enhanced with CFD. With SimScale’s cloud-based CFD tool, the propeller performance can be quantified and improved, end-to-end, in the web browser. Furthermore, SimScale’s cavitation model can robustly model the effect of vapor bubbles in incompressible liquid flow.

ship propeller cfd simulation

Subscriptions and access to engineering simulation for every budget

Virtual prototyping and new design validation.

CAE enables you to predict and optimize the performance of a new ship. Several design iterations can be rapidly verified and compared via virtual prototyping and simulation. With SimScale’s workflow, you have an end-to-end process, everything happening in the web browser.

marine simulation for ship design and boat design

Submarine Pipelines

Submarine pipelines, often connecting two continents for oil or water supply, are highly reliant on fluid and structural simulations to alleviate points of failure. With SimScale’s FEA and CFD capabilities, high-fidelity simulation results can be directly implemented into the early design as well as in-operation maintenance processes

Elastomeric Bearing in Bridge Design

The bearing loads on a bridge are crucial to its structural integrity. With SimScale’s nonlinear FEA capability, the loads can be accurately quantified.

Sundeck of Revelry yacht by Verge Yacht Design

The rising interior design firm behind some of latest eco-friendly superyacht refits

When turning superyacht dreams into reality, finding the right yacht designer is crucial. US-based Verge Yacht Design , founded in 2021 by principal interior designer Anita Rivera Turcotte, has quickly proven itself as a leader in the industry despite its relatively young age. The firm has already worked on an impressive array of projects, collaborating with renowned shipyards such as Feadship , Amels and Heesen , among others. Currently working on two new builds and two refits, with three additional refits scheduled for 2024-2025, Verge Yacht Design specialises in full-service superyacht interiors and personalised furnishings, all while being committed to using environmentally conscious materials in its work.

Bespoke superyacht interiors

At Verge Yacht Design, innovation is at the heart of every project. The firm collaborates closely with yacht owners and crew to create stylish and functional spaces that cater to the client’s lifestyle and taste. Verge is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional yacht design, offering creative and customised solutions that are truly one-of-a-kind. A hallmark of Verge’s approach is the incorporation of biomimicry, drawing inspiration from nature to enhance the design.

A prime example of Verge’s expertise is on board the 54.3-metre, Amels-built Revelry , which underwent an extensive eight-month refit at Thunderbolt Marine from May to December 2022. Verge Yacht Design led the complete interior transformation, which included bespoke furnishings, reupholstery, curated artwork, custom Roman sheers and blackout window shades, custom lighting and technical upgrades. The sundeck was also reimagined with an LED-backlit quartz bar top, bespoke seating, spatial reconfiguration, custom barware and a soft refit of the bridge deck and crew areas.

“Anita and the Verge team channelled their many high-end talents to produce a refitted interior beyond our owner’s dreams,” praises the captain. “From design to fit, Verge paired yacht practicality and sustainability into their aesthetic design. As with all projects, when challenges present themselves, it’s the commitment that excels a team to the finish line.”

Service that goes beyond design

Verge Yacht Design has significantly expanded its scope beyond yacht interiors to offer a full suite of services, including project management, furniture design and product engineering. The firm oversees every aspect of a project, from the initial design phase to final implementation, ensuring smooth execution through a trusted network of collaborators and vendors.

The studio’s designs are distinguished by their engineering precision. To bolster this technical expertise, Verge has been collaborating with renowned naval architect Nick Eremic on structural engineering. Eremic’s knowledge in engineering and construction ensures that superyacht concepts are both realistic and functional, while also facilitating an organised process for contractors during the build phase.

Eremic will be joining the Verge Yacht Design team on a full-time basis in September 2024. His expertise will enhance the firm’s capabilities, allowing them to offer 3D models and renderings, engineering drawings comprehensive project management services.

Leading the way in eco-friendly yacht design

Committed to staying at the forefront of eco-friendly innovation, Verge Yacht Design strives to integrate technologies and practices that minimise environmental impact into every aspect of its designs. The firm actively sources materials that reduce weight to lower emissions, as well as carbon-neutral decking and upcycled components.

A key focus for Verge is understanding the origins and production processes of the materials it uses to ensure they are environmentally certified. By selecting marine-grade materials that are reusable and biodegradable, particularly for closed-loop systems, Verge minimises environmental impact while adhering to the highest standards of sustainability.

Verge also prioritises the full lifecycle of each material, carefully evaluating its impact on the marine environment. This involves assessing energy consumption, waste production and the potential for recycling and reuse. Looking to the future, Verge considers the long-term impacts of its material choices, emphasising biodegradability, recyclability and positive end-of-life outcomes. But sustainability in yacht design at Verge extends beyond material selection. The firm also focuses on reducing its carbon footprint throughout the entire logistics and procurement process. This includes maintaining transparency in the supply chain, consolidating shipments, optimising routes, partnering with green carriers, and sourcing locally whenever possible.

Verge Yacht Design is currently developing a yacht-specific furniture line in collaboration with a luxury brand, as well as a marine fabric line, both set to launch in 2026. These exciting ventures position Verge as a brand to watch in the world of superyacht design.
