in the late 80’s. She goes by Kookaburra and, yes, I’m aware that I own a NZ that’s named after an Australian bird!

Most Chicos were 40’s, mine just has a sugar scoop. The still has 3 40’s as far as I can tell. The design is very similar to a Kalik or 40.

I’m interested to talk with anyone who has information or experience with these . In particular I’d be interested in knowing more about bearing replacement, and possibly replacement of the original rudders which have an stock. We sailed Kookaburra to from this summer and I’m thinking I need to assess the and replace bearings before I bring her home next summer (2023).

Kookaburra is a cruising we use primarily in the and British Columbian waters. We‘ve done extensive to her and love her very much!

Any info is appreciated!

CYC is an all volunteer non-profit Yacht Club open to any and all interested in sailing, who seek camaraderie and fellowship without pretense. The city of Chico is located in Butte County within several hours of the Sacramento River Delta and enjoys closer proximity to many sailing lakes. San Francisco Bay is just a bit farther but certainly within reach.

We encourage you to find out more about the CYC by perusing the pages of our site, contacting one of our officers and or attending a meeting. We are always seeking new members and looking to spread the word about the joys of sailing.

Sailing nz 25.

Hi, I am looking for recommendations for a  fibreglass 40' fast cruiser, live aboard, that can be sailed 2 up offshore, with 6'4''  head room.

Price max - $250,000

Thanks in advance.

Maybe a Farr 12.20?  Although 6'4" headroom maybe an issue.   https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-2565176114.htm?rsqid=0284f2cf989443ceb492424df94db5c1-001

There’s a shed load in that size/price bracket on Trademe . Immerse yourself and start making comparisons

Finding that headroom will be a bit of a challenge, you will need to look for a heavier displacement yacht. Mull/Chico 40 perhaps, or if you can stretch the length Cav/Davidson 45 centre cockpit

Most of the european production boats of 40 plus foot would fit your requirements, including 6.4 head room. Bavaria, Beneteau, Dufor, Hanse..

Steve Pope 253

There are a large range of French designs that probably would fit your requirements, I have a 40 year old one, alluminium cutter, 2 Centre boards, unfortunately it wouldn't fit the 6'4" min headroom. Though I have had many 6' plus folk onboard who have managed. All the info you need can be found online, even easier if you speak French. J.P Brouns is one prolific designer, there are many others. Google and Google again.

Is the headroom absolutely essential? My No.2 son is somewhere over six foot and he recently upgraded to a Chico 35. He doesn't quite have full headroom but doesn't see it as a problem - the first thing you do when you go below is sit down. We lived on a Cav 39 for three years which gave us full headroom, then went down to a H 28 which we lived on for four months over each summer.  We did not find going to a smaller boat with a lot less headroom a problem.  If you can adapt to the need yo bend the head a little when under deck, you have a lot more options.

Been living aboard 3 years now  headroom only in galley and main saloon. Happy as.

The Jeanneau DS (deck saloon) range has huge headroom, stowage and overall volume. I’ve got a 42DS but even the 39DS is a spacious boat. I’m 6’2” and breeze through the boat.

My experience as a 6’2” sailor of buying and owning European & Kiwi boats is that you will almost certainly not get 6’4” headroom in a 40 footer of any design. Exceptions being (1) custom builds and (2) European Deck Saloon / Kiwi Pilothouse designs.

Generally speaking kiwi designs are lower headroom (except for pilothouse designs) mostly seeking performance in favour of headroom. I recall viewing a Farr 46 that I couldn’t stand upright in.

The European boats are generally taller down below but you don’t find 6’4” throughout the boat until you get up to the 50ft mark (depending on model).

And so can you get one for $250k. Yes if you’re prepared to get something a bit older and longer than 40ft.

In terms of cost, forget the sticker prices on TM. If you seriously have $250k ready to slap on the table, then in today’s Covid-19 wobbly market you could viably offer that to any vendor asking $350k and you’d stand a strong chance of getting a deal. Just make sure it’s got a water maker and big fuel tanks...

In summary on the Euro options:

1. if 40ft is an upper limit then from recollection probably only Beneteau Oceanis 40 or Jeanneau 39DS stand a chance of meeting your tall requirements for headroom.

2. But if $250k (not 40ft) is your upper limit then the Beneteau Oceanis 46s, Hanse 461 and Beneteau 473s on TM are all huge volume and worth a look.

Otherwise buy a ship.

I have one of these. I don't know headroom measurement but it would be close to 6'4". Can measure and confirm next time I'm there if you like? Comfortably quicker than a 1220 as well.

https://www.trademe.co.nz/2438010313

Yes the Bene First is another great option and in a different league to a 1220. Designed more for performance & racing than the Oceanis cruising range, the Firsts also have slightly beefed up rig & hull at high load points.

Neil

I am 6 foot 4 inches tall and own a Farr 1220.  Headroom not a problem in the saloon although I do bang my head sometimes moving through the cabin doors in to the rear and forwards cabins.

Headroom was certainly a factor in buying the boat, these days I need to be able to stand up.

Checked my bene first 40.7 tonight, it has 6'4" headroom through the saloon.

My Neighbour has one of those, Kiwi Breeze. She sails pretty well for what she is, but significantly slower than the Bene 1st OR the 1220... HUGE interior and cockpit for her size, must be 2x that of the 1220...

Life’s a journey not a race and that Young is a minter.

DS is a hard one to pull off  at that length and she works better in my opinion than the opposition.

That cockpit is a beauty.

Chico 30 is a 30 ′ 6 ″ / 9.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Gary Mull and built by Keith Eade (NZ) starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Chico Yacht Club Celebrates 50 Years of Active Sailing

Most of the time, when we think about yacht clubs, we picture places in coastal harbors and waterways. But there are many other clubs that are actively engaged in sailing in the interior of the country. One such club is Chico Yacht Club, which is located in Butte County, within (several hours’) reach of the Sacramento River Delta, and enjoys closer proximity to many sailing lakes. Last month, on October 20, Chico Yacht Club members gathered at Canyon Oaks Country Club to celebrate 50 years of sailing activities and adventures. They sent us this report of the event.

chico yachts

“Commodore Sue Griffin and her executive committee prepared an evening of celebration and camaraderie, with many active and former members attending. The MC for the evening program was past Commodore Mary McCluskey, aided by some members of the club performing some newly minted music and words for our enjoyment.”

Chico club member dancing

“The club was started in 1973 as the North American Sailing Association, sponsored by Coastal Recreation, builders of the Aquarius and Balboa sailboats. However, after receiving requests from other sailors to join, in 1983 the name of the club was changed to the Chico Yacht Club . This opened up membership to sailors with other kinds of sailboats.

“Club members have various kinds of sailboats from trailerable to oceangoing vessels. We sail many of the local lakes and coastal areas, as well as [taking] long-distance cruises. Members have cruised to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, and many other International destinations. We even have a couple that has sailed around the world and are members of the Seven Seas Society.”

The club welcomes sailors who might be interested in joining the Chico Yacht Club. For more information, contact Commodore Sue Griffin, at (310) 869-7040, or any club member.

“Happy Sailing!”

Family tell of ordeal on stricken yacht

The family were rescued from their stricken yacht by a French Navy Zodiac. Photo / Brett Phibbs

As massive waves crashed onboard and the yacht rose up almost vertical at times - the mast had snapped and rigging was tangled beneath the hull - father-of-six Charles Bradfield had no choice. "For the sake of my children I am prepared to abandon ship." Mr Bradfield, wife Joy and the children had spent days battling up to 40-knot winds and 4 to 6m swells in their Chico 40 boat, after two months at sea on a family adventure to Tonga. "My family are my pride and joy," Mr Bradfield said back on dry land yesterday. "My pride," he said motioning toward his children, "and my Joy", toward his wife. When the mast came crashing down on Tuesday - the boom within inches of striking Tom, 13 - Carenza was stable but immobile. But the Bradfields were seasick and exhausted, having barely slept since striking strong southwesterlies the weekend before. Rugged up in thermals and wet-weather gear, the skipper and his five eldest children were taking it in turns to man the helm in pairs, while Mrs Bradfield cared for 6-year-old Rebekah and cooked. The yacht's forward bulkhead was cracked and the strobe light and wind instruments had gone down with the mast. On striking rough seas last weekend, family members reduced the sail area to a minimum - "just enough to keep the boat steering and powered up". "We were punishing the boat with every wave," said Mr Bradfield. Yesterday all agreed the "rogue 10-metre waves" were the scariest. Said Josh, 18: "You would look at the wave coming and then hold on and then it would be like 'doosh'." The family - Rebekah, 6, Abby, 10, Tom, 13, Emma, 14, Matt, 16, Josh, 18, mother Joy and father Charles - set off for home from Tonga about midday on Wednesday last week. When the mast snapped and the rigging tangled on Tuesday, it was time to call for help. They put on lifejackets and gathered valuables before 16-year-old Matt activated the emergency beacon. Then, using a fishing rod and wire to rig a high frequency radio aerial, the Bradfields called for help. French rescue vessel La Glorieuse got wind of their distress call and vowed to arrive in four hours and twenty minutes. In the meantime, a Royal NZ Air Force Hercules was dispatched from New Zealand to keep a vigil from above. "It was almost like watching a bird circling over a dying animal. I almost want to cry thinking about it," Mr Bradfield said yesterday. Communicating with the French captain, Mr Bradfield agreed it was safer to wait until morning for the rescue. "The captain said 'the conditions are rough and it's dark, can you survive until tomorrow?'." The next morning at first light, the family were rescued and it was time to say goodbye to Carenza. With tears in his eyes, Mr Bradfield yesterday recalled pulling the "plugs", securing all floatable devices inside and battening the hatches. "This was the first time I had to think about it. My family were safe on another vessel and I'd just scuttled my own boat." Soon after from La Glorieuse, the Bradfields watched the 25-year-old yacht go down. The ship docked at Auckland yesterday morning to a crowd of relieved friends and family. Last night Mr Bradfield was already vowing to charter a boat "to get the children back on the horse". He has invited the French captain and a crew member to dinner tomorrow.
