Are two hulls better than one? If the array of new build and new concept catamarans are anything to go by, it’s a question the yachting industry appears to increasingly be asking.

Celebrity endorsement in the shape of Rafael Nadal has certainly helped raise awareness of the category, but beyond the tennis ace’s custom Sunreef 80 Power , more and more yacht owners are coming to see that cats are worthy of their attention: The twin hull design delivers larger volumes, greater stability, as well as increased efficiency and speed when compared to its monohull equivalent.

Beyond leisure cruising in shallow, tropical waters, today’s class of catamarans are being primed for global expeditions. The category is also shining bright with early prototypes demonstrating how yachting is going green, such as the hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered power-cat tender by America’s Cup team Emirates Team New Zealand.

From classic models to rugged explorers and support vessels to a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered cat, here are seven stellar twin-hulled vessels that show how versatile the power-catamaran design can be.

Astilleros Armon’s ‘Wayfinder’

The second big cat–following the stealth-like 217.2-foot Hodor–in the Incat Crowther ShadowCat series, Wayfinder launched from Spain’s Astilleros Armon in 2021 as a support vessel to a superyacht. It’s already been spotted in the Mediterranean, dutifully playing its supporting role to the mothership. At 223.8-feet long, and with a 45.9-foot beam, the shadow boat has extra storage space for the mothership, a games room and an outdoor area all rolled into one, with a collection of extra features including a helipad, helicopter hanger, spare parts workshop, medical facilities, a flower room and a pickleball court. There is also space for a main crew of 18, with extra space for 14 supplemental crew or service staff.

Silver Yachts’ ‘SpaceCat’

In October 2022, SpaceCat emerged from Silver Yachts in Fremantle, Western Australia, the first multihull delivery from the Australian yacht builder behind the naval-styled explorer yacht Bold. Like the yard’s monohulls, the superyacht bears the signature of yacht designer Espen Øino who has described the category as the “SUV” of the sea for its potential to first divide opinion and then perhaps dominate the market. A compact 118.1-foot length hides an impressive 4,306 square feet of space across the tri-deck configuration; the largest being the 2,174 square-foot main deck. The series has been designed with owners who may want to own more than one. “The yachts could be positioned on three main continents; one in Asia, one in the Mediterranean, and one in the Caribbean, avoiding any hassle of repositioning and non-availability to use the vessel,” said the shipyard said in a statement at SpaceCat’ s launch.  

Abeking & Rasmussen’s ‘Nurja’

When delivered in 2008, the 134.6-foot Silver Cloud stood out for its amphibian appearance and full-width helipad on the upper deck, but what attracted the most attention was her swath (small waterplane area twin-hulled) design, the first time such a concept had been seen in the superyacht fleet. The owner chose Abeking & Rasmussen for the build for a reason. He was impressed by the German yard’s proven success with the swath platform in its military and commercial builds. He believed the stability would offer an antidote to his wife’s seasickness, an assumption that was proven correct. In December 2020, the yacht changed hands and is now known as Nurja .

Sunreef’s 80 Eco

At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the largest yacht may have been Lürssen’s sleek 378-foot motoryacht Ahpo but, across the port, a catamaran less than a quarter of the size was turning just as many heads. With over 1,700 square feet of solar panels seamlessly integrated into her hull, superstructure, mast and bimini roof, the 80-foot Sunreef 80 Eco is a vision of the future, with fully electric propulsion for silent cruising. Along with smart innovations, including a rainwater collection system for washing down the deck and the ability to use her solar panels to heat up the boiler, there’s also plenty of proof that going green doesn’t mean compromising on luxury: The interiors are finished with sustainable materials, including natural fabrics and salvaged teak to reach the exacting standards of superyacht comfort.

Equipped with an electric-hybrid drive system, as well as both solar panels and hydr0-generation technology to top up battery power, the French-built Windelo 50 Adventure can reach both the wilds of Patagonia and the palm trees of the Pacific Islands at minimal cost to the environment. Scratch the surface of its classic catamaran aesthetic for more eco-friendly innovations like a hull constructed from a composite material of basalt and PET foam from recycled plastic bottles. These upcycled materials reduce carbon emissions by almost 50 percent compared to traditional materials. The interiors haven’t been ignored either: It’s a modern, functional design emphasizing sustainably sourced wood. The first of this series earned a special mention for sustainability at the European Yacht of the Year 2022 awards.

Profab Central Engineering’s ‘The Beast’

With its thick gray, geometric stripes that stand out against the endless blue of the South Pacific of its home waters, there’s nothing inconspicuous about The Beast . Delivered in 2019 by New Zealand’s Profab Central Engineering, the 128.7-foot vessel is billed as the ultimate adventure charter yacht, equipped with scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, SUPs, a waterbike and even a 42.7-foot sport fishing vessel called Baby Beast. The twin-hull design adds to its personality, says its charter manager, Ben Osborne from 37South in Auckland, New Zealand. “The extra volume allows The Beast to carry larger tenders and more equipment—setting it up perfectly for exploration—style cruising, while not sacrificing on the interior spaces,” he told Robb Report . The interior is styled like a Manhattan bachelor pad and can sleep 12 guests in five cabins.

Silent 120 Explorer

Proof that 007-style toys are no longer the sole domain of football pitch-sized yachts, the Silent 120 Explorer’s onboard stash includes a U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine and Xcraft eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. And, true to sustainable super-spy form, rooftop solar panels slide open to reveal a smartly concealed e-VTOL touch-and-go landing pad. A generous 45.4-foot beam—plus the space saved by its solar and electric propulsion systems—is what makes such cool cruising extras possible on a boat of this size. Another of the new wave of cats designed for carbon-free adventure cruising, this latest project builds on the Austrian company’s previous all-electric launches, such as the Silent 60. The first 120 Explorer is set to hit the water in 2024.

The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Né de l’amour commun d’épris de la mer, Jean François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon et Rémi Tristan, le groupe Fountaine Pajot est parti à la conquête de l’industrie de la croisière en 1976.

Inspirés par la passion de la voile…

Une saga humaine

Partie d’une passion pour la régate et l’envie d’inventer des bateaux de voile légères novateurs (dériveurs 505, 470 ou 420), l’entreprise Rochelaise a rapidement su briller dans la course au large avec la conception de prototypes IOR, puis des premiers catamarans de croisière, qui démontrèrent leur excellence et fiabilité en remportant les plus belles courses du moment. L’arrivée en 1983 de la première gamme de catamarans de croisières, préfigura le développement de nouvelles techniques de construction et l’ambition de transformer pour le mieux l’industrie de la plaisance. Ayant intégré le mythique chantier Dufour en 2018, le groupe est aujourd’hui un des leaders mondiaux de la plaisance. Avec la volonté de participer à la transition écologique du monde de la plaisance, Fountaine Pajot Group, continue d’écrire l’histoire de la croisière avec à sa tête toujours des passionnés de voile : Claire Fountaine, présidente, Nicolas Gardies, directeur général, Romain Motteau et Mathieu Fountaine, directeurs généraux délégués.

Avec près d’un demi-siècle de savoir-faire soutenu par une capacité d’anticipation, les deux bureaux d’études Fountaine Pajot travaillent sans cesse pour améliorer performance et innovation. Cette insatiable volonté de conserver le meilleur du présent en l’associant au meilleur de la recherche, contribue à optimiser toujours davantage la vie à bord des catamarans à voile et catamarans à moteur Fountaine Pajot et leur empreinte carbone.

L’amour de la voile est partagée par chacun des 800 salariés. Près de 40 corps de métiers travaillent ensemble pour construire des Yachts d’exception . Ils sont menuisiers, électriciens, architectes… et œuvrent depuis 1976 pour fabriquer nos bateaux de luxe grâce à un judicieux équilibre de procédé industriel et d’excellence artisanale.

Nos équipes se répartissent sur nos quatre centres de production à : Aigrefeuille, siège et usine historique en charge des bateaux cœur de gamme Fountaine Pajot, La Rochelle, spécialisée sur les modèles « Flagships », Gujan Maestra pour les Motor Yachts et à Perigny, siège et usine historique de Dufour. Grâce à ce savoir-faire d’orfèvre et d’artisanat de luxe en modèle industriel, l’équipage Fountaine Pajot a permis de mettre à l’eau plus de 4 000 catamarans et 17 000 Dufour naviguant sur tous les océans du globe.

Le groupe Fountaine Pajot s’est imposé dans l’industrie du nautisme grâce à l’invention de techniques d’application du polyester innovantes et high-tech : l’injection et l’infusion . Cette technologie avancée donne à nos bateaux toute leur robustesse, allégeant considérablement les catamarans tout en conservant une qualité constante.

L’injection permet aussi de répondre aux exigences environnementales les plus strictes, conformément à notre philosophie d’entreprise. Ces matériaux composites, innovants et technologiques, constituent l’essentiel de la structure de nos catamarans à voile et Motor Yachts : coques, fly, ponts, cloisons, etc. Les équipes Fountaine Pajot font également appel aux meilleurs menuisiers pour concevoir et assembler les pièces de bois qui rendent ses bateaux si uniques.

Fountaine Pajot facilite une navigation éco-responsable et autonome grâce à un système embarqué de production et de gestion d’énergies renouvelables . La mise en place du plan Odyssea 24 en 2022, a permis au Groupe de concrétiser sa vision : des catamarans de croisière et de voiliers zéro émission d’ici 2030.

Le lancement du système Smart Electric en 2022 est la concrétisation de plusieurs années d’études et d’engagements. Dans cette continuité, celui en 2023 du Samana 59 Smart Electric REXH2 ouvre une nouvelle ère de l’industrie de la plaisance, prouvant une fois de plus que le Groupe a encore une longueur d’avance…

Une vision ambitieuse

Depuis les bancs des Jeux Olympiques de 1976, aux championnats du monde des half tonner, l’équipe Fountaine Pajot à toujours tourné son regard vers l’horizon avec l’ambition de devenir pionnier dans son domaine. Parmi les premiers à produire des catamarans de croisière de série au monde, inventeur d’un processus d’injection révolutionnaire , précurseur de l’eco-cruising, le Groupe Fountaine Pajot ne s’est arrêté devant aucun océan, aucune mer pour offrir le meilleur de la croisière.

Présents dans 80 pays, ses marques Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts et Dufour offrent un large choix de modèles autant luxueux que marins. Son ambition : devenir le premier fabriquant de bateaux de croisières à énergie verte pour une croisière confortable et respectueuse des océans.

Dériveurs et prototypes et naissance du Chantier

Création du chantier FOUNTAINE PAJOT par Jean-François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon et Rémi Tristan. Pierre Fountaine rejoint l’équipe et implantation en 1978 du nouveau site à Aigrefeuille pour faire face au succès et produire les dériveurs 505, 420 et 470.

Le succès continue avec les prototypes IOR, des «Half Tonners» qui seront Champions du Monde et remporteront la Course en Solitaire du Figaro. En 1981, Le trimaran Royale (18m) et le catamaran Charente Maritime (21m) destinés à la course open sortent des Chantiers Fountaine Pajot. Nombreuses victoires avec à leur bord Jean-François Fountaine et ses amis.

Naissance d’une gamme et nouvelles collaborations

Fountaine Pajot lance le concept des catamarans de croisière avec le Lousiane 37. Eric Bruneel dessine ensuite le Corneel 18 et après la sortie du Maldive 32 et du Figji 39, Jean Berret Racoupeau collabore avec le Chantier pour déssiner le Marquise 53.

Joubert Nivelt signe le Venezia 32 et O.Flahault design la casquette de roof, signature de la gamme Fountaine Pajot. Fountaine Pajot accélère son expansion à l’international avec 4 nouveaux modèles, du 35 au 46 pieds. Le Taïti 75 né en 1996 et révolutionne le marché du Day Charter.

Nouveaux Process de fabrication, l’infusion et l’injection

Révolution technologique, Fountaine Pajot adopte l’infusion pour le moulage de l’ensemble coques nacelle du nouveau Lavezzi 40. Un progrès environnemental indéniable.

Le Highland 35 offre un nouveau standard sur le marché du bateau à moteur. Le Mahé 36 est le premier bateau moulé entièrement sous vide : infusion pour les coques et RTM éco pour le pont, plus grande pièce réalisée ainsi à cette date.

Entrée en Bourse

Reconnaissance de la solidité financière du chantier et de son potentiel de développement. Entrée en bourse sur Alternext de l’entreprise qui peut ainsi financer son industrialisation et le renouvellement de ses gammes.

Innovations et Concept Eco-cruising

Création de la classe «FLAGSHIP», avec le GALATHÉA 65, sur plans Berret Racoupeau et le QUEENSLAND 55 sur plans de Daniel Andrieu.

Le Concept D’Eco Cruising prend naissance, pour naviguer responsable en utilisant au maximum des sources d’énergies renouvelables intégrées dès la conception du bateau.

Une nouvelle direction et un plan d’entreprise ambitieux

Les Trawler Fountaine Pajot se démarquent du reste du marché du catamaran à moteur avec une nouvelle marque et une nouvelle histoire qui débute.

Jean-François Fountaine transmet la direction du chantier à Nicolas Gardies nommé Directeur Général et à Romain Motteau Directeur Général Délégué. La relève est assurée. Jean-François Fountaine est élu maire de la Rochelle.

Pour ses 40 ans, Fountaine Pajot peut célébrer une croissance significative avec de nombreux nouveaux modèles et succès récents comme le Saba 50, le nouveau MY37, le Lucia 40 ou encore Ipanema 59.

Pour accompagner sa croissance, Fountaine Pajot lance la nouvelle identité de ses marques avec une identité forte pour chacun de ses marques dès fin 2026. De nouveaux catamarans à voiles et nouveaux Motor Yachts rejoignent ensuite la gamme avec succès : Saona 47, MY 40, Alégria 67…

Consolidation du Groupe et nouveaux horizons pour les Motor Yachts

Le groupe Fountaine Pajot devient un acteur majeur de la plaisance, s’il ne l’était déjà, en finalisant son rapprochement avec le Chantier Dufour Yachts. Le Groupe Fountaine Pajot représente un acteur majeur de la construction de plaisance avec au total 4 unités de production dans le bassin Rochelais et propose une gamme complète de voiliers, catamarans à voile et motor yachts.

Une nouvelle dimension pour la marque Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts qui assume aujourd’hui la supériorité des espaces de ses Motor Yachts comparativement aux monocoques de même taille et qui offre une lecture plus aisée de sa gamme. Et un nouveau modèle : le MY4.S. Afin de poursuivre sa croissance, Fountaine Pajot déplace son unité de production près de Gujan Maestra et vise à augmenter sa capacité de production.

Cap vers la neutralité carbone avec Odysséa 24 et la plateforme ODSeaLab

Fountaine Pajot avance dans son plan d’entreprise visant à décarboner la croisière au travers de multiples innovations. Un nouveau souffle qui emporte avec lui collaborateurs, propriétaires, Concessionnaires et fournisseurs. Le Groupe lance ODSeaLab, plateforme collaborative et développe ses propres moteurs électriques. Lancement de l’Aura 51 Smart Electric.

Fountaine Pajot dévoile le premier catamaran à hydrogène au monde. L’Aura 51 Smart Electric est rejoint par l’Astréa 42 et l’Elba 45 Smart Electric. Fountaine Pajot dévoile à la rentrée 2023 le plus grand catamaran à voile de luxe jamais construit par le Chantier : un catamaran de 80 pieds, le Thira 80.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Dans le cadre de la confection de nouveaux types de catamaran made in Occitanie, un choix audacieux d’innovation écologique a été retenu en partenariat avec le Centre des Matériaux des Mines d’Alès (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard). Il s’agit à la fois d’allier performance écologique en termes de minimisation de l’empreinte environnementale et résistance des structures, et ce, dans une démarche globale d’économie circulaire sur l’ensemble des parties du bateau. Pour ce faire, et en lien avec l’IMT MINES ALES, Windelo a misé sur l’utilisation de matières premières secondaires, compétitives des matériaux pétrosourcés vierges, et parfaitement conformes au cahier des charges sur le plan des performances mécaniques. C’est un réel premier pas vers l’élaboration d’une flotte de navires 2.0 s’intégrant complètement dans les enjeux et défis écologiques du XXIème siècle.

Associées à une démarche écologique d’économie circulaire intégrant une part non négligeable de matières premières secondaires concurrentielles des matières vierges, l’architecture de conception et la résistance des matériaux des nouveaux catamarans de Windelo sont éprouvées par des tests mécaniques réalisés au Centre des Matériaux des Mines d’Alès (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard) en lien avec les architectes et designers du projet. La conception du navire, et en particulier les bordées et étraves, passe par une recherche de structuration performante de l’agencement des matériaux le composant, combinée à une géométrie d’assemblage optimisée sur le plan mécanique. Pour ce faire, des développements d’essais spécifiques, comme l’étude de la déformation de la structure des panneaux constituant la coque du navire, sont étudiés par des techniques de corrélation d’image numériques couplés à des essais de résistance mécanique normalisés.

La rencontre avec Olivier et Gautier a été une agréable surprise pour moi, dès l’exposé de leur projet, j’ai vu réunis tous les ingrédients d’une réussite, l’expérience de gestion d’entreprises mais avec une modestie rassurante, le souci de former une équipe des meilleurs experts (sourire) et une réelle écoute de leurs avis. Au fil des rencontres, les discussions ont ravivé mes souvenirs de la création puis du développement de Catana. Les mêmes motivations, la même recherche de perfection, la même audace teintée de modestie que nous avions au départ du projet. Windelo est centrée sur le produit ; une ligne de catamarans performants construits avec les techniques les plus modernes. Je n’en avais pas conscience à l’époque mais je crois que le succès d’un bon bateau vient de cette passion pour la mer avec la volonté de marier confort sécurité et performance. Je retrouve ici cette passion, et aujourd’hui ce qui a fini de me conquérir c’est le souci de préservation de la nature, tant dans les matériaux choisis que dans les méthodes de production.

Le programme de grande croisière auquel se destine ce nouveau bateau pose la question de l’antagonisme entre d’une part la recherche de performances sous voiles et du plaisir de navigation, et d’autre part l’aménagement d’espaces de vie agréables et généreux. L’originalité de la réponse apportée ici réside dans la disposition du cockpit rassemblant poste de barre et manœuvres au centre du bateau et dans le traitement de l’espace de vie qui occupe l’arrière de la nacelle. Juste en arrière du mât le cockpit extérieur offre deux postes de barre protégés du vent et des embruns, une belle vue sur les voiles et sur les étraves, et permet d’avoir l’ensemble des manœuvres à portée de main tout en limitant les besoins de circuler sur le pont. Hors navigation, le cockpit peut être plus largement protégé de l’extérieur et s’ouvrir sur l’espace arrière. De plein pied en arrière de ce cockpit, nous n’avons pas aménagé deux espaces de vie dupliqués l’un à l’intérieur et l’autre à l’extérieur mais un seul grand espace dont le degré d’ouverture est très largement modulable. Nous avons porté notre effort sur la géométrie des limites matérielles et visuelles de cet espace et sur les cinématiques d’ouverture des baies. Une fois ouvertes elles « disparaissent » pour transformer l’intérieur en extérieur. La générosité des ouvrants permet également de moduler la ventilation de cet espace en jouant sur une large gamme d’ouverture sur ses quatre côtés Ce travail sur la modularité et sur la disparition des limites se retrouve à l’extrême arrière de la nacelle, avec une plateforme articulée aux bossoirs se transformant en plancher au mouillage, et dans les cabines arrières dont le large hublot tournant fait « sauter » l’angle entre bordé latéral et face arrière. L’espace de cabine est donc généreux malgré la relative étroitesse des coques. L’ensemble de ces choix nous permet de conjuguer une emprise contenue de la nacelle, gage de maîtrise du devis de poids, à un espace à vivre généreux, avec une place centrale accordée à la navigation et aux manœuvres. L’élancement des pointes avant, l’importante hauteur libre sous nacelle, et l’attention portée au centrage des masses, complètent les qualités marines attendues pour un programme de navigation hauturière. L’autre originalité du projet apportée par ce nouveau chantier se trouve dans l’approche d’« éco-conception » portant sur les matériaux et le mode constructif. Limitant fortement le recours aux moules ce dernier apporte une plus grande marge de liberté dans les déclinaisons et évolutions des bateaux ainsi conçus.

Qui sait lequel du père ou du fils est le plus passionné ? Peu importe. L’important ici est d’écrire un projet innovant au sein d’une culture familiale, pour aujourd’hui et les générations à venir. Passer le flambeau, le relais ; c’est la volonté d’Olivier Kauffmann. « Au début je voulais me faire mon propre bateau, pour ma famille et moi ; partir faire un tour du monde sur un catamaran performant et plaisant à vivre. Je rêvais à une qualité d’espace inédite. Aujourd’hui, l’envie a mûrit, et je tiens à le partager avec la grande famille des marins ».

HH Catamarans – a new range of performance cruisers from China

A range of fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats from Hudson Yacht & Marine based in south-west China will include cats from 55ft to 115ft, reports Elaine Bunting

HH Catamarans is a name you may not have heard of (yet), but behind this new brand is one of the largest-scale investments and boldest thinking in some years. The plans are ambitious, with a range of big, fast, luxurious catamarans up to superyacht scale.

The company is Hudson Yacht & Marine, based in south-west China, which sees its main market in Europe and the US, hence its appearance in Annapolis.

At the new facility in Xiamen, an island city lying between Hong Kong and Shanghai, the first is being built of what is to be a range of catamarans from 55ft to 115ft: the HH55, HH66, HH77, HH88 and HH115.

Four HH66s have been sold and are already in production. The first is due to launch in February for an Asian owner, and tooling for the HH55 is underway.

If the appearance of these resembles the Gunboat range more than the average production cruising cat, that is hardly surprising: the designs are the work of Morrelli & Melvin, the design team responsible for 18 Gunboats, and whose expertise in performance multihulls over the years spans A Class and Nacra catamarans to the late Steve Fossett’s PlayStation and, more recently, BMW Oracle Racing.

All will be fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats aimed at fast passagemaking and comfortable open plan ‘indoor/outdoor’ living. The HH55 and HH66 are styled as ‘a light and strong raceboat in disguise’. The HH66 is in composite construction, primarily aimed at cruising but, according to Morrelli & Melvin, “able to kick it up a notch”. So it is ultra light, and has C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

The HH55 is available in two configurations: forward cockpit and centre steering or dual aft steering and either in full-on performance-mode carbon composite construction or a less costly epoxy/E-Glass alternative. It, too, features C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

NZ builder brought in

Besides commissioning Morrelli & Melvin for the designs, owner Hudson Wang brought in New Zealand boatbuilder Paul Hakes four years ago. Hakes, a well known racing boat builder very experienced in building in pre-preg carbon, admits that he was “quite taken aback” by the scale of the company’s commitment to building boats – to date it has spent US$50m on building a boatyard. In that time Hakes has built several of the Judel Vrojlik-designed HH42, the best known example of which is Richard Matthews’s Oystercatcher XXX .

Hudson sees yacht manufacture as part of a serial manufacturing operation. The company’s products are wide-ranging. It produces around 20 per cent of baseball bats bought in the US, makes aircraft escape slides, barbecues and coolers, and employs some 4,000 people, of which 400 are in the boatyard. Its history in boats goes back to building J/80s and RIBs.

Tooling for the HH55 is also well underway. Paul Hakes tells us that the yard has finished a new fit-out hall and now has capability to have four or five HH66s and five to six HH55s in build at a time.

Preliminary drawings for the HH88 have been done and sufficient structural detail to allow price estimates. Designer Gino Morrelli says that the company is in talks with two potential owners.

Morrelli emphasises that the range could also go beyond the 115-footer currently planned. “We think the yard has capability to go to 150ft and they’ve built their new building to get that out the door, as that is where we think we will be in five to six years.”

Each of these boats can be highly customised, and renderings show very modern interiors. The zingy hull colours illustrated emphasise the message that Hudson is aiming to appeal to owners not hidebound by tradition, and perhaps migrating from motorboats.

The fact that the business has put its weight so strongly behind multihull production is yet another indication of growing interest in this area of sailing. “As far as the sailing market is concerned, the share of multihulls is growing, and bigger boats are coming out [of the downturn] faster than smaller boats,” says Morrelli.

Les moteurs IPS, qui équipent certains catamarans à moteur Fountaine Pajot sont conçus pour offrir une meilleure efficacité énergétique, ce qui peut se traduire par une économie de carburant par rapport à d’autres systèmes de propulsion. La conception globale des moteurs IPS vise à optimiser les performances du bateau en termes de vitesse , de maniabilité et d’économie de carburant. Et bien sûr, les moteurs IPS offrent une excellente maniabilité grâce à des hélices orientables, facilitant ainsi les manœuvres dans des espaces restreints comme les ports.

Les catamarans à moteur sont par nature plus efficients qu’un bateau à moteur monocoque . Selon le modèle et la motorisation installée à bord, à une vitesse de croisière rapide, c’est à dire aux alentours de 18 noeuds, les motors yachts de la gamme Fountaine Pajot peuvent atteindre entre 260 et 425 milles nautiques. A une vitesse de croisière dite “économique”, ils peuvent atteindre jusqu’à 1000 milles nautiques. Grâce à son architecture à deux flotteurs et une nacelle centrale suspendue, les masses sont divisées par deux et mieux réparties. La finesse des coques diminue la poussée d’Archimède et demande une énergie bien moindre pour déplacer la carène sur l’eau. Une consommation deux fois moindre que celle d’un monocoque en résulte et augmente l’autonomie des catamarans à moteur pour les grandes traversées et les longs séjours au mouillage.
