Madsummer-Lurssen-superyacht

Madsummer: On board the 95m Lürssen superyacht

The 95-metre Lürssen superyacht was commissioned by an owner in the market for a new plane, as well as a boat. Madsummer is equipped with a dedicated deck for the owner's seaplane, ensuring he got both. Sam Fortescue learns how Madsummer took off.

Madsummer could have been a plane, rather than 95 metres of German superyacht. That isn’t meant to be flippant; it has nothing to do with her interior design or her lines. Designer Peder Eidsgaard’s first meeting with the owner was actually about a plane. “He came into the office and said, ‘Wow, you do boats!’” recalls Eidsgaard. “The whole meeting turned into a boat meeting.”

As fate would have it,  Moran Yacht & Ship , the brokerage and project management firm behind  Madsummer , had been in the process of developing a brief for the yacht with the owner and captain. A request for proposals went out to several studios and Harrison Eidsgaard won the contract.

“We have had a close working relationship with the owner of  Madsummer  for over 15 years and previously completed another  Lürssen  project with him,” says project manager Sean Moran, “and as with all of our projects, our involvement began the moment he began considering building a new custom yacht.” Once the client had chosen Harrison Eidsgaard it took nearly 18 months of work by Moran’s project team and the designer to get the details agreed. “We did 34 different floorplans,” Eidsgaard says in a voice that quivers only slightly at the memory. “There were various modifications and developments, so the design that started at 85 metres grew to 95 metres.”

As Moran notes: “The list of yards that can build a vessel of this size and complexity to the quality we expect is a short one.” Lürssen is the top-ranking yard in the world for supersized yachts (in our Top 101 list of the biggest yachts in the world at the end of 2018, the German yard had 30 entries – more than double that of its nearest rival). “We have a planning team who support the whole process,” says Thorsten Göckes, Lürssen’s project manager on  Madsummer , while describing the company structure that allows it to build so big, so often. “You’re not surprised by something going wrong – you know for weeks in advance and then you can try to find a solution.” He also notes that this project’s experienced and committed owner’s team was an invaluable partner.

It was after Lürssen was signed as builder that the bulk of the work was hashed out by the project and build teams. This ranged from big picture – as Moran puts it, “how to achieve the designer’s vision while understanding, from the shipyard’s perspective, what is practical and achievable” – to minutiae: “On a very granular level you need to understand how many lighting points a certain size yacht should have and how much each lighting point costs.” On a 95 metre, that’s a vast job.

On such a project, Moran also says: “It’s easy to get lost in the overwhelming number of systems on board a yacht when searching for efficiency gains that will have the largest impact on overall performance.” But this, he believes, is very much an “outside in” approach to problem-solving. Over Moran Yacht & Ship’s 55 builds in 31 years, it has come to prefer a “middle out” approach. “We begin with the power plant demands and the fuel burn as a result of that demand, and we work our way down the list of potential ways to reduce this demand and thus reduce the amount of fuel burned.” On  Madsummer  that amounts to waste heat recovery, condensation collection, peak load levelling, advanced power management and specially insulated and treated glass to reduce heat transfer.

The result of these efforts, a rapid two and a half years later, is a boat that is efficient, subtly masculine on the outside and a riot of colour inside. Italian  Laura Sessa  designed the boat’s interior – by far her largest project since splitting from the Alberto Pinto studio – and she incorporated a feast of primary hues. Moran calls it “a modern beach house vibe with ample entertainment areas”, which is apparent up to a point.

Moran sheds more light on the styling when he tells me: “It’s the owner’s opinion that too many yachts feel like mausoleums, and that nothing can be touched or enjoyed on board. He recognises some of the best things about owning a yacht are the unique experiences you can share with those that matter most to you – your close friends and family.” Göckes agrees, noting that whereas some very large superyachts leave you feeling “small” and “worried you’ll scratch the furniture, if you come on board  Madsummer  you feel comfortable, you can lay down or sit down and you feel right away at home”.

A blaze of colour strikes you from the moment you enter the main saloon, where a lavish Tai Ping silk carpet greets you with stripes of white and a rich blue that is a struggle to find a proper name for; azure is as close as it gets. “Blue is the colour of the owner,” Sessa says – something that is to be amply confirmed later on.

The six guest cabins on the main deck each exhibit a different colour theme – scarlet, orange, aquamarine and so on. Each one follows a similar pattern, with silk carpets setting the tone. This is then picked up in the cushions, bed linen, the border of the headboard, the heavy woven fabric wall coverings and the gleaming lacquered cabinetry. The finish is pristine, with a range of textures that beg to be touched.

Bathrooms attached to each cabin add to the effect, with a mother-of-pearl mirror frame stained the appropriate colour and lacquered. Alongside the soft stripes of the Calacatta marble, stainless steel fittings and rich sycamore cabinetry, the effect is stunning. Sessa is particularly proud of a latch on the shower door, which is concealed within the otherwise unbroken line of a stainless-steel rail.

The theme of concealment crops up throughout the boat, mostly in wood. “All the door handles are custom designed and built into the panelling,” Sessa says. Looking down the central corridor of the main deck, the eye sees dark strips of mutenye wood laid over a gleaming mirror – but no handles. Sessa knows where they are, though, and once you learn to spot them, you realise that the whole corridor is lined with cupboards.

On the upper deck, the two VIP cabins stick to the colour theme, but there are subtle variations. Instead of lacquered wardrobes, Sessa has used geometrically patterned sycamore. Around the large windows, she has created a striking effect by taking heavily grained wood and covering it with bronze. “It is a co-operation between Germany and Italy,” she says. “Only an Italian company could produce this finish. The structure of the wood is kept on top. It’s really beautiful.”

In the owner’s suite on the deck above, colour is everywhere. Access from the circular lift is through his-and-hers dressing rooms, where the azure is concentrated tenfold. The effect is created by covering fine ash panelling with a thick layer of coloured, semi-translucent lacquer. Sessa has set it off with a large red painting of a woman. There are his-and-hers bathrooms, too – hers with a bath, and his in fragile fault-ridden quartzite, which reflects the light differently according to the time of day. “It is very difficult to work with,” Sessa confirms.

A key requirement of the GA was to make this owner’s deck as private as possible, although the front section is given over to the captain’s luxurious suite and a wheelhouse that has been finished as if it were a guest area. The captain laughs when I ask about this. “Yes, the owner will sit down with his friends for lunch, then bring his plate through here and talk. He loves boats.”

As a nod to that privacy, there are no stairs down from the owner’s aft terrace to the upper saloon below. “At some point we had a fold-down staircase, but he deleted that,” says Eidsgaard. “He wants to be able to look down and see where everyone is, while being able to retreat and have his privacy.”

To this end, the owner’s deck has a pair of wings that allow him to gaze down on the pool area two decks below. And there is another special feature that you don’t understand until you are standing right at the top or right at the bottom of the boat. Eidsgaard has repeated a 2.5-metre diameter skylight from the well-equipped spa on the lower deck, through the seating area on the main deck, the fire pit on the upper deck and into the owner’s terrace. Naturally, there is an awning that can open or close the view. “That means that you could stand in the spa and look up through the decks at the sky,” says Eidsgaard. “That is unique.”

The light connects the decks, but Eidsgaard has also been very clever about the way he’s used levels around the stern. He’s created oval-shaped social pods on the two main guest decks, focused on the skylight. And around that, he insisted on removable glass windscreens. You actually step up to the pool area, to create more space in the beach club below, and again, there is more glass here. “There is a glass bulwark on main deck, surrounding the whole open deck area; that is something we haven’t done before,” says Göckes. “They protect you from wind and also hide you from photographers with a mirrored glass effect.”

With family life and entertainment driving the owner’s brief, there is plenty of space devoted to toys. Most unusually, perhaps, is the seaplane berth on the sundeck. It required the superstructure to be strengthened to support the 590kg empty weight of a Husky A-1C 200 seaplane, and the crane that stows in the bulwark when not required to lift the plane on to the sundeck. There’s a fully certified helideck at the bow, capable of supporting an EC135 (around three tonnes). The tender garage forward can accommodate a 10-metre Ocean 1 RIB and an 11-metre Maori Yacht limo tender, plus five jet skis and a jet board. A second side-opening tender garage aft holds a seven-metre Super Air Nautique G23 wakeboarding boat.

Moran looks back on the new-build project with quiet satisfaction. “The success and speed of this build comes down to two things – a great plan and a great team,” he says, listing Captain Chris Beirne, Harrison Eidsgaard, Laura Sessa and the talented craftsmen and employees of the shipyard as key to the success of the project.

Leaving the yacht via the swimming and spa pools, which are separated by a sheet of glass, the masculine-feminine combination is striking. Designer Eidsgaard confirms that the owner is a tall man, who wanted wide side decks, large handrails and even a hint of sharkiness, provided by the exposed stainless steel of the six vast exhaust pipes behind the mast. But there are curves everywhere in the exterior, and not a single horizontal line.

Then again, perhaps this is no coincidence, given that the owner has had plenty of practice in refining exterior design. Looking back over the previous  Madsummers  – the 78-metre Lürssen now called  Roccinante , and the 55-metre Feadship now  Cynthia , one thing is sure. As Captain Beirne puts it: “They’ve gotten more and more colourful as we go along.”

MADSUMMER yacht

The owner of the Madsummer Yacht wanted their yacht to be filled with many activities for the whole family to enjoy, especially water activities.

Madsummer focuses on having a contemporary design to greet guests with beautiful scenery both outside and inside the yacht. This incredible yacht was built by the acclaimed Lurssen.

Specifications

With its massive size, it is no surprise that the Madsummer Yacht can hold up to 20 guests and 30 crew members, in its 10 staterooms.

It is powered by Caterpillar twin MTU engines and can cruise at 16 knots, but can reach speeds of 18 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles. This is achieved by the yacht’s 300,000-liter fuel tanks.

Madsummer Yacht also has anchor stabilizers to make for a much more comfortable ride for passengers – especially those who suffer from sea sickness.

The shape and uniquely sharp lines of Madsummer were designed by Harrison Eidsgarrd. This modern styling was created to catch the eye of anyone passing by this wonderful vessel.

Each “floor” of the yacht has a gorgeous deck for passengers to enjoy the ultimate views of the ocean and horizon.

Its sleek and white exterior makes Madsummer stand out from the rest wherever it sails.

mad summer front

This is the really fun part of Madsummer. This superyacht is loaded with fun toys for any water lover to enjoy.

If you want to enjoy soaring over the ocean waves, try out Madsummer’s fly boards or jet skis, wakeboards, or Seabob.

The ship also includes fishing equipment and scuba diving equipment if you want to join the water fun in a more relaxing way.

Every cabin has a different theme with its own color palettes, silk carpeting, and furniture. Wherever guests go in Madsummer will be a unique experience on its own.

For instance, the main saloon greets guests with bold white and blue stripes and an incredible Tai Ping silk carpet.

When passengers go out to the sun deck, they will see an interesting site. The hardened deck is designed to hold an Aviat Husky, so a crane is hidden to move the aircraft between the ship and the water.

When the Aviat Husky is not on the deck, the large space is used as a dance floor for parties. A great multifunctional addition to this superyacht.

Madsummer has only been sailing for a few years, but it has already blown away many yacht enthusiasts.

Its size is not the only reason it has become so famous, but it will be interesting to see how the Madsummer Yacht will continue to grow and change over time.

A Closer Look at the Madsummer Yacht

Ian Fortey

The luxury yacht Madsummer has built itself a reputation as a party boat. The name “Madsummer” seems to just be a play on Midsummer with a twist. While still under construction, Madsummer was known by the codename Project Fiji.

The yacht features an interior design by Studio Laura Sessa Design while the exterior design of the Madsummer was handled by Harrison Eidsgaard.  She famously hosted parties by David and Victoria Beckham. She was built by German shipyard Lürssen Yachts.

Who Owns the Luxury Yacht Madsummer?

madsummer superyacht owner

Madsummer is owned by American billionaire Jeffrey Soffer, who you may know as model Elle MacPherson’s ex-husband. He’s also a successful businessman, co-CEO of Turnberry Associates, and real estate developer with a net worth estimated to be about $2.2 billion. He’s known to have an appreciation for luxury yachts and the Madsummer is not his first.

Like many yacht lovers, Soffer has chosen to name multiple yachts Madsummer. He sold his previous Madsummer in 2018 before acquiring this latest version.

How Big is the Motor Yacht Madsummer?

The Madsummer is definitely a superyacht by any standards. It measures a remarkably 311’8” in length and while that may not make it the largest yacht in the world it’s an impressive size nonetheless. The yacht’s beam measures nearly 46’ across and it features a 12’6” draft as well. The vessel weighs in at 3,250 GT.

All that room means the yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests and 28 crew members.

How Fast is the Madsummer Yacht and What Engines Does it Use?

madsummer superyacht owner

The Madsummer is powered by a pair of twin MTU engines. They allow her to cruise at 16 knots. The maximum speed is 18 knots and she is able to get to a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 300,000 liter fuel tanks.

How Much Did The Madsummer Yacht Cost?

madsummer superyacht owner

Word is that the Madsummer cost Soffer $250 million back in 2019. That doesn’t put it in the running to be the most expensive yacht ever built by a long shot but you don’t need us to tell you it’s still a steep price tag.

Is the Madsummer Available for Yacht Charter?

madsummer superyacht owner

The Madsummer is available for charter for those interested. Many owners will make a luxury yacht available for charter for any number of reasons. With a rumored yearly operating cost of $15 million to $25 million, the charter fees can definitely help cut that down and save the owner money. In addition, charter yachts are eligible for various tax breaks throughout Europe, which also makes it an enticing proposition.

You can charter the Madsummer for about $1,755,000 per week, depending on availability. The price starts at the same level whether you’re looking to charter in the low season or the high season. It does not cover expenses like food, fuel and various other fees

What’s the Interior of the Madsummer Yacht Like?

madsummer superyacht owner

While many yacht owners opt for a sort of classical look for their yacht interiors, using muted color palettes or natural wood, stone, and metals, Madsummer is much brighter. The interior design makes use of plenty of bright, primary colors to give it a more fun and youthful vibe than a lot of other yachts. You’ll notice in the photos this looks a lot more like an apartment than some other yachts which resemble high class hotels or even museums. The bright blue color scheme with accents in red and white is pervasive throughout the entire vessel.

Six of the yacht’s 10 cabins can be found at the main deck forward. There are four identical double cabins aft and then two twins forward. Each of the cabins have their own custom color scheme. In the doubles guests will find red, turquoise, blue and beige. Head to the twins and it’s green and navy blue.

The upper deck is where the final twin is kept, alongside two VIP cabins. They get a little more elegant with one in blue and the other in orange. But they also feature plenty of wood accents and bronze touches as well to make them stand out even more. The bathrooms even have rose gold taps.

madsummer superyacht owner

The master suite is to the aft of the bridge deck. If you’re not a fan of white and blue then this room will blow your mind. Even the oak walls were tinter white and covered with a blue resin lacquer to flesh out the look.

Inside the suite you’ll find his-and-hers dressing rooms with spy mirror wardrobe doors. The his and hers bathrooms have also been custom designed with her bathroom being a brighter and cleaner esthetic and his bathroom featuring dark marble and painted teak.

The master suite also heads out onto a private aft terrace for views of the ocean.

Features and Amenities

madsummer superyacht owner

As you can imagine, Madsummer’s owner is someone who wanted the yacht to be fun and offer a lot of relaxing and exciting features to those on board. As such there are a lot of amenities to enjoy. Madsummer features:

  • The most obvious feature from the outside is the helipad located towards the bow of the vessel to allow guests to arrive and depart even when Madsummer is at sea.
  • A long, 12 meter or 36 foot swimming pool with jacuzzi is also a standout feature visible even from outside the vessel.
  • There’s a custom dining table and artwork from Colombian artist Santiago Montoya
  • For charter guests with families the Madsummer has the very unique feature of a children’s playroom, something you won’t find on almost any other luxury yacht on the water today
  • A disco area featuring a dance floor and state of the art sound system
  • An ethanol-fueled fire pit with a Teppanyaki grill and bar
  • An elevator transports guests between the four decks and, for those who prefer to get exercise, a spiral staircase with white leather stairs encircles it all the way down.

  • The sundeck features a well-equipped gym with a kinesis machine and numerous hidden TV screens
  • To the aft of the sundeck you’ll find a storage space that can house a Husky seaplane. Seaplanes are actually a theme throughout the yacht in much of the art as well. The owner is a fan of vintage seaplanes. The seaplane can be lowered to the water with a crane when the vessel is at anchor and the storage bay serves as a dance floor
  • The entire yacht is replete with sunpads, sofas and lounge areas on every deck
  • A luxury spa area with a sauna and massage room is available to help guests relax and unwind
  • The beach club opens out onto a hydraulic swim platform when you’re ready to get out and enjoy the open water

madsummer superyacht owner

Based on the extensive amenities it’s clear that the Madsummer is built with fun in mind and they didn’t skimp on the toys at all. Check out this extensive selection.

  • A 36’1” Maori Yachts Limo Tender
  • A 32’10” OceanOne Tender
  • A Fassmer 625 Tender
  • A 23′  MasterCraft Rescue Boat
  • A pair of stand up Kawasaki jet-skis
  • A pair of SeaDoo jet-skis
  • A pair of SeaDoo Wake Pro jet-skis
  • Four stand up paddle boards
  • Four Seabobs
  • Water skis, wakeboards and a wide variety of towable toys
  • Various inflatables
  • Plenty of scuba diving equipment and snorkeling gear
  • Extensive selection of fishing equipment

The Bottom Line

The Madsummer is one of several yachts of the same name owned by American billionaire Jeffrey Soffer. The 312 foot superyacht was built in 2019 by Lurssen in Germany. It reportedly cost Soffer around $250 million and has a yearly cost of between $15 million and $25 million to keep running. She has a cruising speed of 16 knots and a max speed of 18 knots.

Madsummer is available to charter and it will cost you around $1.775 million per week, not including expenses, if you’re interested. The yacht has plenty of fun and unique features and amenities including a hangar that converts into a dance floor, a children’s play room, tons of lounging and relaxation spaces, a full spa and an incredible range of toys to use at sea.

MONACO YACHT SHOW 2023

Lürssen delivers 95m 'Madsummer' to owner

The bespoke superyacht manufacturer's latest project will be on show at monaco yacht show 2019….

Moran Yacht & Ship has announced that Lürssen’s 95m Madsummer has been successfully delivered to her owner. According to the Florida-based brokerage house, Madsummer was delivered within budget and a number of months ahead of schedule. The delivery of Madsummer is the second 95m-plus vessel to be delivered under the supervision of Moran Yacht & Ship in the last two weeks. Madsummer will spend her first weeks in the Mediterranean before being debuted at Monaco Yacht Show 2019.

Built for a repeat client, Madsummer’s exterior profile was penned by Harrison Eidsgaard and, according to the yard, boasts harmonious proportions between her 95m LOA and 14m beam. “Wide exterior staircases together with centreline openings provide seamless connections between the generous exterior deck,” comments Peder Eidsgaard. “A fabulous pool and Jacuzzi deck aft is raised three steps and is protected by glass bulwarks that are an integral part of the exterior profile, providing very clear and uncluttered hull surfaces.”

The interior design, designed by Studio Laura Sessa, has been described as contemporary modern. “For this interior design yacht project, I invested inner artistic creativity due to my long relationship with the Owner. I playfully created spaces full of customised details and colours from the sea, emanating harmony and elegance,” comments Laura Sessa. “All decks were designed with a specific focus on comfort but also practicality. The result will be absolutely stunning.”

Madsummer features a 12m swimming pool, large spa and extensive diving facilities. She has helicopter facilities and has been designed for worldwide cruising, further proving that the anecdotal evidence, as well as the MarineTraffic data analysed in The Superyacht Migration Report, that suggests owners are getting more adventurous stands true. Masummer can accommodate up to 20 guests across 10 staterooms.

madsummer superyacht owner

According to The Superyacht Agency, Masummer is the third superyacht to be delivered by the German superyacht manufacturing behemoth in 2019. At the close of the year Lürssen will have delivered four projects with an average LOA 114m. While the average size of the projects exceeds 100m, it should be noted that Lürssen are eager for potential clients to be aware that they are an option for bespoke build projects in the 55m-plus range, rather than being limited to 100m-plus projects. Indeed, in September 2018, Lürssen signed a 54m project .

Previously known as Project Fiji, the 95m/ 312ft motor yacht MADSUMMER has been delivered to her owner.

Currently en route to Gibraltar, MADSUMMER has left the Lurssen shipyard following the successful completion of sea trials in the Baltic Sea.

It comes shortly after it was announced that MADSUMMER would be making her world debut at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show .

The yacht was initially launched under the project name FIJI in March.

She ranks in the World’s Top 100 Superyachts, sharing the 58th spot with Oceanco’s superyacht NEOM , which measures the same length.

The mammoth megayacht features refined exterior design from Harrison Eidsgaard. The English studio has created a unique profile, with clear and structured lines complemented by a foredeck helipad.

Other amenities include a 12 metre swimming pool, huge spa, dedicated dive room and beach club with sea terrace.

The interiors of the motor yacht have been headed up by Laura Sessa Romboli, and they are expected to be cool and contemporary.

The yacht provides accommodation for up to 20 guests in 10 well-appointed cabins.

Completed Lurssen MADSUMMER

Moran Yacht & Ship are pleased to announce that the 311′ (95m) Lurssen MADSUMMER has been successfully delivered to her owner, nearly 3 full months early. Formerly known as Project FIJI, MADSUMMER was sold by Moran Yacht & Ship,

“It’s for an American client who has been a great client of ours for 15 years,” said Moran Yacht & Ship President Rob Moran at Monaco Yacht Show. “We’ve built many boats for him before.”

Formerly, known as Project FIJI, the superyacht will feature a 39′ (12m) swimming pool, a huge spa and big diving areas. It will be helicopter-ready, storing a helicopter on the bow, and capable of worldwide cruising. MADSUMMER will accommodate 20 guests in 10 suites on board.

Our new construction team sold the project, negotiated the build contract on behalf of the buyer, compiled the technical specification and will oversee the complete construction of the vessel through delivery in 2019.
