Rolling on the River: Gateway Arch Riverboat Cruises

No visit to the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis is complete without a riverboat tour of the Mississippi! Step back in time as you board the Becky Thatcher or Tom Sawyer and take a tranquil tour of the riverfront.

Before interstate highways crisscrossed the nation, people did their luxury traveling by train and steamboat. St. Louis was a bustling river town in the 1800’s with hundreds of steam powered paddlewheelers docked on riverfront! There’s a cool display of what St. Louis looked like back then at the Arch’s new museum –be sure to check it out on your next visit.

The riverboats can take your family on a hour long tour of the riverfront –there’s a sightseeing cruise running every day from March to November.

But if you want to make it really special–book a dinner or brunch cruise! The Becky Thatcher is set up with a double decker dining room and takes visitors on a two-hour tour of the riverfront while you dine on a delicious buffet.

Brunch on the Riverboat Becky Thatcher

Sunday Brunch Cruises are a great way to celebrate Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Of course you don’t need a special occasion to enjoy a wonderful weekend at the Arch with your family! There’s one or two brunch cruises scheduled every month the boats operates. Check out their current schedule under “specialty cruises” here.   There’s also dinner cruises, dancing cruises, and a couple cruises up to see the lock and dam where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers meet!

What’s included with my ticket?

Your brunch ticket includes a buffet full of scrambled eggs, blintzes, French toast, sausage, prime rib, stuffed chicken, veggies, pasta, dessert, and coffee, iced tea, orange juice, milk and chocolate milk. Soft drinks, beer and cocktails are available at the bar for an extra charge.

What to Expect on your Riverboat Brunch Cruise

First, you’ll want to reserve your spot early by getting tickets online . Tickets are $45 for adults, $18 for kids 3-12 and free for little ones under 2.

The boats are docked at the foot of the Gateway Arch. Stop by the ticket office to pick up your tickets by 12:30 — the boat leaves promptly at 1pm!

Then you’ll come aboard and be directed to your seat. Unlike the sightseeing tours, the Brunch Cruise has reserved indoor seating with white linen table clothes. Tables are located by the windows, so you can enjoy the whole cruise from the comfort of the cabin, or pop upstairs to watch from the observation deck.

The food might be served buffet style, but you’ll also get a friendly waiter to serve your drinks and clear the plates. Don’t worry about standing in line either, the serving staff dismisses diners by table so the buffet isn’t overwhelmed.

And while you wait, enjoy a little Dixieland music!

If you’re looking to get a postcard photo of the Gateway Arch, a riverboat cruise is where to be! You can also get a pretty cool one from the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park over on the East Side, but you don’t need to worry about pesky power lines messing up your shot here. ( Here’s a few more ideas for great photos with the Arch! )

Upper Mississippi River Cruises

Thinking about hopping aboard a USA River Cruise to explore the Upper Mississippi? Then you’ve got a lot to look forward to — and a little planning to do.

But don’t worry. It’s the fun kind of planning. The kind when you choose from a tremendous variety of Mississippi River cruises and pick the one that best suits your tastes and interests.

USA River Cruises has so many cruises along the Upper Mississippi River that we sometimes have a hard time confining them to one page of our website!

What’s on your itinerary? Let’s look at just a few — and we’d like to stress again just how many options there are!

The first trip we’ll mention really puts the Upper in Upper Mississippi — an eight days, seven nights cruise from St. Louis, Missouri, to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Upper Mississippi River is stunning, inspirational, and for many people the more scenic half of the waterway. You’ll explore the world where the former Samuel Clemens (pen name: Mark Twain) grew up. Twain, raised in Hannibal, Missouri, actually worked for a time as a riverboat pilot on the mighty Mississippi. You’ll also get to see much of the American heartland, including Dubuque, Iowa, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Red Wing, Minnesota.

And if you’re interested in the trip downriver instead of up, well, USA River Cruise can reverse this itinerary for you, too!

Next, consider expanding your trip to encompass the whole shebang: We call it the Complete Mississippi River Cruise, and the name is apt.

You’ll spend a full three weeks aboard ship as you cruise the length of the second-longest river in North America — from New Orleans, Louisiana, to St. Paul, Minnesota. You’ll visit big towns (Memphis, St. Louis, and more) and small towns (Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Chester, Illinois, where you can get a picture of a tall bronze statue of Popeye, whose creator, E. C. Segar, is from Chester).

You’ll have to act fast for this one, though. USA River Cruises only offers this trip once per year!

St. Louis riverfront cruise

Riverboats at the Gateway Arch have brought back happy hour on Thursdays

The events take place on st. louis’ only dock bar and café on the mississippi river.

By Lauren Healey // August 20, 2024

It’s finally not super hot, so naturally we need to drink outside. Earlier this month, Riverboats at the Gateway Arch announced the revival of its weekly happy hours, and we can't wait to get down there.

The happy hour takes place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday when weather allows on St. Louis’ only dock bar and café on the Mississippi River at 50 South Leonor K. Sullivan Blvd.

Happy hour menu offerings include reasonably priced cocktails such as classics like a Mint Julep and a Dark and Stormy, along with a Mississippi Breeze Cocktail with 1220 Spirits gin, cranberry and grapefruit juices. Mocktails are a steal for only $5 and you can get an NA version of a Mojito, plus a few other juicy concoctions. On the food side, look for Cowboy Caviar, a black bean and corn salsa served with chips, shrimp cocktail, a jumbo pretzel, fries and a fruit and cheese plate.

After happy hour, you can enjoy views of the city on a two-hour Skyline Dinner Cruise, which also includes live music for entertainment. Tickets for the cruises are available online and must be purchased 24 hours in advance. You can simply show up for the happy hour, and both activities can be enjoyed separately. An end date for the happy hours has not been set, but the organizers expect it to run at least until the end of September.

St. Louis University High School (SLUH) stands as a beacon of leadership and academic excellence, not only in the St. Louis region but also on a national level.

Consistently ranked among the top academic institutions, SLUH offers a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to excel in all areas of study, while its formational program molds students into "men for others"—a Jesuit philosophy that emphasizes moral and ethical development, in addition to viewing faith as an asset for academic and holistic growth.

Founded in 1818, SLUH has deep roots in the St. Louis community. As it approaches the celebration of 100 years at its Oakland Avenue campus, the school's commitment to the city remains steadfast.

Celebrate 100 years with SLUH

On Saturday, September 28, SLUH will host its Celebration of the Century , featuring alumni reunions, its annual admissions open house (typically held in early November), and free festivities for kids, teenagers, and the whole family.

During the event, guests can also enjoy the Taste of SLUH, with alumni and community-owned restaurants providing food for purchase, as well as a variety of games, bounce-house activities, a petting zoo, crafts, and more. Special merchandise will also be available to commemorate the 100th anniversary, and guests will be able to enjoy self-guided, historical campus tours.

Leaders in the community

SLUH's urban location is more than a historical marker; it's a vital part of the school's identity. Through strategic partnerships with nearby local organizations, including the Saint Louis Science Center, Forest Park South, and St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, SLUH continues to play a pivotal role in the community, fostering opportunities that benefit both students and the wider public.

“We're committed to being an anchor in the local community and in the city,” says Fr. Matthew Stewart, SJ, principal for the school and a 1998 graduate. “It's evident in our capital campaigns, the partnerships we forge in this exciting corridor of the city, and the roughly 40,000 hours of service that our students dedicate every year.”

As a leadership school, SLUH is not just a place for academic learning but also a model institution for global education. The school's formational program equips students with the tools needed to become leaders in their communities and beyond. This comprehensive approach to education prepares students to tackle the challenges of the modern world while staying true to the values instilled by their Jesuit education.

Commitment to financial accessibility

One of the defining features of SLUH is its commitment to accessibility. The school has a need-blind admission policy, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder academically qualified students from attending.

Each year, SLUH provides more than $5 million in direct financial aid, supporting a diverse student body drawn from 185 middle schools across 91 ZIP codes. This robust financial assistance program not only makes SLUH a top choice for families but also underscores its dedication to providing quality education to a broad spectrum of students.

As SLUH looks toward the future, its role as an anchor in the city of St. Louis is more important than ever. With more than two centuries of history in the urban landscape, the school continues to invest in the community, reinforcing its position as a leader in both education and civic engagement. Through its ongoing commitment to excellence, accessibility, and service, SLUH remains a cornerstone of the city and a testament to the enduring power of education to inspire hope.
