British engineer and sailor on sunken Bayesian superyacht under investigation

Two British crew members who were on board the Bayesian superyacht which sank during a tornado off the coast of Sicily are under investigation, sources say.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch , his teenage daughter and five others were killed when the British-flagged yacht capsized and sank within minutes in the early hours of August 19.

Italian prosecutors are investigating ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith for possible manslaughter and shipwreck charges, a source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The source said Mr Parker Eaton is suspected of having failed to protect the 56-metre-long yacht's engine room and operating systems.

Mr Griffith was on watch duty on the night of the incident, the source added.

The boat’s 51-year-old captain James Cutfield, a New Zealander, was put under investigation for the same offences on Monday , and declined to respond to prosecutors during questioning on Tuesday.

The investigation does not mean the crew members are guilty and does not mean formal charges will follow.

The crew were among 15 survivors of the sinking that killed seven people.

The crew was saved, except for the chef Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, alongside Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank.

Hannah had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study at Oxford University.

Their bodies were later recovered from the wreck following days of searching.

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard, after a trial at a federal court in San Francisco, California.

The yacht sinking has puzzled experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini , should have withstood the storm and should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have said their investigation would take time, and would require the wreck to be salvaged from the sea.

The Bayesian is lying on its right side, at a depth of around 50 metres.

Two British crew members of the Bayesian, the superyacht that sank off Sicily last week, have been placed under investigation by the local prosecutor's office.

Tim Parker Eaton was in charge of the engine room on the night of the sinking , in which seven people were killed.

Both Mr Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffith, the lookout crew member on duty during the sinking, have been placed under investigation.

Sky News understands from sources close to the investigation that police officers are searching the crew bedrooms and have seized at least two phones.

Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

It comes after the captain of the yacht decided not to respond to prosecutors' questions.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old from New Zealand, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

He was questioned for the third time by the prosecutors in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese on Tuesday.

"He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that," lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told the Associated Press, adding that the captain's legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defence strategy.

Fifteen people survived the sinking last Monday, including all but one of the crew.

Among the seven people killed were British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah .

The bodies of the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, as well as passengers Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, and Chris and Neda Morvillo, were all found trapped in the hull.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who is leading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht's manufacturer.

Prosecutors said the sinking was "extremely rapid" and could have been a "downburst" - a localised, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The captain of the Bayesian has insisted that he did everything possible to save those on board the superyacht , according to local reports.

Sources close to James Cutfield, 51, told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that the 51-year-old New Zealander is currently living through the darkest days of his life as he is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

They reportedly said Mr Cutfield repeatedly insists that he did not abandon any of the 22 passengers and crew and that he did everything could could to save them.

However, there reached a point when he could do little as the vessel had taken on too much water, they added.

Since Wednesday, Tim Parker Eaton, the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room, and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster, are also under investigation for the same possible charges , their lawyer said on Friday.

Hannah Lynch, aged 18, was one of 22 people onboard her father’s luxury boat the Bayesian when it capsized during stormy weather on 19 August.

Her body was discovered along with her father by rescue teams following the disaster off the island of Sicily. A manslaughter investigation has since been launched by Italian authorities.

The three crew members who are under investigation over the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht left Italy on Wednesday, according to a lawyer.

The ship’s captain, New Zealander James Cutfield, Tim Parker Eaton, the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room, and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster, have all been placed under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

Lawyer Mario Scopesi said that both Parker Eaton and Griffith left Italy on Wednesday, along with Cutfield and the rest of the crew.

A court-appointed armed guard, tasked with ensuring Mike Lynch did not abscond while facing fraud charges, has paid tribute to the tech mogul, saying the security team “became less of a detail and more like a family”.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the people initially unaccounted for after his superyacht Bayesian sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of 19 August.

Last Saturday morning, Italian authorities announced a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the deaths of seven people, after a five-day operation that has seen divers carefully navigating their way into the cabin bedrooms.

After a decade-long legal battle which had seen him extradited to the US to face an $11bn fraud case, Mr Lynch had celebrated by inviting his close friends, colleagues and those who helped him on his legal team aboard his boat as a gesture of gratitude.

Italian prosecutors have put under investigation two more crew members of the Bayesian, the superyacht that sank off Sicily last week, killing seven people, their lawyer said on Friday.

The move widens the probe into the shipwreck, for which the ship's captain, New Zealander James Cutfield, is already under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

Since Wednesday, Tim Parker Eaton, the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht's engine room, and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster, are under investigation for the same possible charges, their lawyer said.

"The profile of their possible responsibilities is still unclear, as the investigation has just started," lawyer Mario Scopesi told The Associated Press.

He added that both Parker Eaton and Griffith left Italy on Wednesday, along with Cutfield and the rest of the crew.

Asylum rescue charities hit out at ‘double standard’ in media and official resources

Charities dedicated to rescuing asylum-seekers in the Mediterranean have hit out at the “double standard” highlighted by the media coverage and resources given to the  Bayesian  search effort.

“For us, every death in the Mediterranean is one too many, no matter where they come from or how much money they make,” the organisation Sea-Eye, who recently rescued 262 people in the Mediterranean, said in a statement to  The Guardian .

They added: “Sadly, it makes a difference in the media, in our society and in politics, who is drowning. We have noticed that the coverage of the situation in the Mediterranean, of tragedies or of our rescues in recent months has not been nearly as extensive as in the case of the Sicilian shipwreck in recent days.”

Days after the  Bayesian  sank, distress calls relating to a dinghy carrying 43 people in the Mediterranean were ignored and the vessel was left in peril for more than 24 hours until the charity Sea-Watch got there “just in time” to rescue those onboard and in the surrounding waters, the organisation alleged.

“For the Italian and European authorities, there are Shipwrecks and then there are shipwrecks, one capitalised and the other lowercase, one immediately rescued and the other abandoned to its fate,” Sea-Watch said, adding: “There was no rescue effort by the authorities. That’s no coincidence; it’s the EU’s double standard.”

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini and deemed “unsinkable”, should have withstood the storm – and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did. Crash involving boat trailer in Yarmouth kills 14-year-old, injures 2 others

A teenager is dead and two others are injured after an SUV struck a boat trailer that was on the side of a road in Yarmouth early Friday afternoon.

Yarmouth police said in a statement that its department received multiple 911 calls reporting a person pinned between a boat and the truck that was towing it on North Main Street shortly after 1 p.m.

The truck, police said, had pulled to the side of the road because of a broken axle. Passengers were trying to fix it when a Cadillac SUV traveling south on the street struck the boat trailer from behind. As a result, the boat trailer hit the people working on the axle, police said.

The crash killed a 14-year-old boy and two other people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital. The conditions of the two people who were injured were unknown Friday.

The driver of the Cadillac, authorities said, remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, which is ongoing. No names were released Friday.

A 14-year-old boy died on Friday after a crash in Yarmouth, the Yarmouth Police Department announced.

At around 1 p.m., police received several 911 calls about a person pinned between a boat and the vehicle towing it on North Main Street, just South of the Great Western Road intersection, the department wrote in a statement .

A truck towing a boat trailer was pulled to the side of the road with a broken axle, the statement read. Although passengers jumped out to fix it, a Cadillac SUV driving south hit the boat trailer from behind, striking those who were trying to fix the axle, police said.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — Investigators have uncovered that the 10-year-old who was found dead in Yellow Breeches Creek on Aug. 14 was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission confirmed the news to CBS 21 on Thursday, two weeks following the death of Matthew Coffroth Jr.

Coffroth had been kayaking with friends and family Saturday, August 10 when the unthinkable happened.

The Lancaster County child had fallen out of his kayak and never resurfaced, according to officials in a press conference on August 14.

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations on life vests requires that children 12 and under who are using canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards and boats 20 feet or less must wear a life jacket while traveling in PA waters.

Since his passing, a GoFundMe has been created for Coffroth to help with the costs of his funeral which was on Saturday.

Raising over $30k, all of those donations have now been given to the family.

To date, the PA Fish and Boat Commission has investigated ten reported boating fatalities in 2024 throughout PA.

Seven of the victims in those cases were reportedly not wearing a life jacket and one victim remains undetermined.

14-year-old killed, two people injured in crash involving boat trailer in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - A 14-year-old boy was killed and two others were hospitalized when an SUV crashed into a boat trailer in Yarmouth Friday afternoon, police said.

Just after 1 p.m., emergency crews responded to North Main Street, south of Great Western Road, for reports of a person pinned between a boat and the vehicle towing it, according to the Yarmouth Police Department.

The crash happened after a truck towing a boat trailer pulled to the side of the road with a broken axle, and the passengers got out to take a look at the issue, investigators determined.

A Cadillac SUV traveling south on North Main Street crashed into the boat trailer from behind, causing it to strike the people working on the damaged axle, police said.

The teenager was killed and two other people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital in unknown condition, authorities said.

The driver of the Cadillac stayed on scene and is cooperating with authorities, police said.

“The Yarmouth Police ask the community to keep this family, their loved ones, and first responders in their thoughts,” the department said in a statement.

People who live nearby said many crashes have happened in the area.

“There’s been several car accidents right there at that intersection. That’s why they put the stop sign with the lights right there,” said Sam Medeiros. “It’s really sad, especially when they’re just trying to get out of the car and fix something.”

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact police at 508-775-0445.

“It’s sad, horrible. Kid didn’t even live. It’s sickening,” said neighbor David Fellows. “I don’t know how you survive that, as a father, as a grandfather, as a mother — can’t even imagine what she’s going through.”
