A Super-Yacht With a Garage For Smaller Boats Is Luxuriously Obscene

Andrew Liszewski

It’s okay to desire the finer things in life, but at what point do you draw the line between luxury and exorbitance? Probably somewhere well before this insane 200-foot long mega-yacht from CRN called the J’ade, which features a built-in garage that smaller boats can drive right into.

Larger boats carrying smaller boats isn’t a new trend by any means; they usually serve as tender craft carrying passengers to shore when the yacht is simply too big to pull into a dock. But those boats are often raised and lowered using cranes. The J’ade is the first luxury yacht to feature an actual garage that floods, allowing a 26-foot speedboat to be driven right inside.

Once the smaller boat is secured, the flooded garage can be drained in just three minutes, reducing the weight the yacht’s pair of massive 1500kW engines has to push around.

As for pricing, if you have to ask you’ll want to just move along. This isn’t the kind of toy you order at your local boat show. It’s the kind of thing that’s custom-built and delivered to anywhere in the world you need it. But with capacity for 13 crew members and 10 guests, maybe you can find 22 friends who are willing to split the cost with you, and then work out a sort of time-share deal. Just remember that fuel costs alone are probably more expensive than just the speedboat this massive craft is designed to accommodate. [ CRN via designboom ]

For those who still appreciate a small footprint but need more space than the Magellano 60 offers, the Numarine 26XP has been designed on both a planing hull, capable of 31 knots, and a slower, displacement running surface. The intrepid 85-footer features a tall bow, an enclosed pilothouse, and copious windows—though from an adventuring standpoint, the displacement version’s most important attributes are its range of 3,000 nautical miles at nine knots and a seven-foot draft, which enables not only transoceanic travel but also access to shallow waters when you arrive in port. Like the Magellano’s, the interior is all about space and comfort, with four staterooms that include a full-beam primary.

The best small cruising yachts in 2023

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 29, 2023

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

yacht with small boat inside

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

ALL THE SPACE IS INSIDE!

Biggest 38’ family cruiser in the world.

The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is based on the successful Archer design with several technical improvements like  Diamond Sea Glaze sliding doors, optional Seakeeper gyro stabilization, Li-Ion batteries, a new electricity management system, a sea-chest for easier maintenance, an optional water maker with high-voltage auto-clean system, etc… A happy and classy gentleman’s yacht which has been cruising in British Columbia, the Bahamas, the Greek islands and South-East Asia for decades already. This beautiful and charming pocket yacht has always been incredibly popular because of its unique layout which guarantees privacy to four people or two couples. Because of its moderate size it can be hauled-out by the smallest Travelift and accommodated in almost any marina anywhere in the world. Thanks to its classic lines designed by Howard Chen and the legendary marine architect Ted Hood, winner of the 1972 America’s Cup, the Selene 38 Aft-cabin model is, and will remain, one of Howard Chen’s favorite yachts. When creating this yacht the designers adopted the unique concept of the “Whale Back” hull, that was a trademark of Ted Hood’s designs. This is why the aft cabin concept has so much headroom and space in the engine room. It probably has the best engine room layout for its size anywhere.

BEST ENGINE ROOM IN ITS CLASS

While the Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is a legendary yacht, she doesn’t compromise on modern technology and first class components, like the recent addition of Diamond Sea Glaze doors, improved sound-proofing, optional air-conditioning, generator and larger aluminum fuel tanks for extensive cruising. Howard says that the best-selling yachts of all time were the Grand Banks 36-42, but when their production ended for a while Howard decided he wanted to bring a high quality compact trawler back to the market. He wanted to build an elegant yacht with traditional timber joinery, leather upholstery, teak & holly floors, a spacious interior with two cabins and two heads, a cozy salon, a practical galley and safe decks. The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is an excellent family cruiser, or the perfect Looper’s yacht. A tender finds its natural spot on top of the aft cabin where it can be loaded by a mast and boom.

Do not hesitate to contact us for more info : [email protected]

Many Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin make use of the mast for a steadying sail which gives the boat a classy « heritage yacht » style as well as a simple and maintenance-free stabilization system. And all this, including a flybridge with an outdoor deck salon, comes at an affordable price! As the entry level model of the trawlers range, the Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is still a best-seller. We call it our “small super-yacht”, all the space is inside…

California yacht loaded with 1,000 rounds of ammo, fireworks bursts into flames and sinks at popular marina.

A luxurious California yacht filled with fireworks and 1,000 rounds of ammunition burst into a fiery inferno before sinking into the Marina del Rey on Wednesday night.

The Admiral, a 100-foot, twin-diesel-engine boat, was docked in the man-made harbor when it erupted into flames, leading to a large-scale response from the LA Fire Department.

Only two hours after catching fire, the nearly million-dollar boat sank into the 800-acre marina 5 miles south of Santa Monica.

The Admiral yacht is pictured engulfed in flames.

Two people escaped the blaze without injuries, the fire department reported.

Witnesses captured the flames tearing through the 100-foot yacht as fireworks illuminated the black smoke and flew across the sky.

Efforts to extinguish the flames appeared successful from the outside, but the fire burning on the inside seemed to be resistant to the water hoses as the blaze continued to destroy the interior, according to KTLA.

Dozens of first responders and intrigued community members watched the fallen boat lying in the marina while crews continued to douse the wreckage with water.

Witnesses captured the flames tearing through the 100-foot yacht as fireworks illuminated the black smoke and flew across the sky.

Neighbors grew fearful that the blaze would extend into nearby boats and potentially set off a chain reaction.

“I saw it fully engulfed in flames and like many of us living here, heard an explosion and saw fireworks coming off it, and more flames and then walked down here and captured video of it,” resident Lynn Rose told NBC Los Angeles .

The boat was reportedly being fueled by a propane source “complicating” firefighting efforts. Officials set up a floating physical barrier known as a boom to prevent debris, including diesel fuel, from polluting the waters.

Officials did not indicate how the fire started as of Thursday morning.

The Admiral, built by Broward Marine in 1986, featured four cabins including the master suite, could hold 10 guests with three crew members, and was last listed in 2018 for $985,000, according to Boat International.

It began listing to its side, forcing officials to evacuate everyone from the dock.

Before its fiery destruction, the boat could reach a top speed of 18 knots (20 mph).

The owner’s identity was not immediately revealed.

Interestingly, even in the more elegant fine dining restaurants aboard, Star Breeze does not employ any sort of formal reservation system when it comes to the eateries available. This encourages a relaxed, stress-free atmosphere, something that extends to its state-of-the-art World Spa by Windstar. Here, you’ll find a full thermal suite and steam room available alongside a wide variety of sumptuous spa treatments. If you’re looking for somewhere to relax and refresh yourself after a busy day ashore, Windstar Cruises has you covered.

Taking full advantage of the benefits that come with being a smaller ship, Star Breeze will whisk you away on an adventure to popular ports across southern Europe and the Mediterranean – such as Rome, Valencia, and Dubrovnik – alongside smaller islands in the Caribbean and across the South Pacific – Bora Bora, Huahine, and Tahiti among them.

While you might not be spending many sea days on Star Breeze with the itineraries available, Windstar Cruises has made certain that every moment you do spend onboard – whether you’re relaxing in the stylish all-suite accommodation after a serene spa session or relishing in the live piano playing at Compass Rose – will be a true delight.

11 Best Pocket Cruiser Sailboats to Fit a Budget

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

Looking for a trailerable pocket cruiser that offers that liveaboard feeling? This list features 11 small sailboats with cabins that have the amenities often found on larger vessels. They may not be ocean crossing vessels, but they’re certainly capable of handling big bays and open waters.

What is a pocket cruiser? It’s a small trailerable sailboat, typically under 30 feet in length, that’s ideal for cruising big lakes, bays, coastal ocean waters, and occasionally bluewater cruising. Pocket cruisers are usually more affordable, compact, and offer a level of comfort that’s comparable to bigger liveaboards.

Small cruising sailboats are appealing for many reasons, but if you’re like most of us, you want to maintain a certain level of comfort while on the water. We took a poll and these are what we found to be the best cruising sailboats under 30 feet.

– DON’T LET CARBON MONOXIDE SNEAK UP ON YOU – Install detectors on your boat to sniff out any buildup of carbon monoxide gas. Avoid running engines or generators while anchored or stopped for extended periods. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

Andrews 28

Open and airy below deck, the Andrews 28 doesn’t sacrifice comfort for speed. Designed by Alan Andrews, the Southern California naval architect renowned for his light, fast raceboats, this 28-footer will certainly appeal to the cruiser who also enjoys a little club racing. Sporting a total of 6 berths, a galley, head and nav area, you might forget you are on a boat small enough to be easily trailered. The retractable keel allows the Andrews 28 to be easily launched and hauled and ensures it’s as comfortable as a daysailer as it is a racer. Click here to read more about the Andrews28.

Beneteau First 20

First 20 at sunset

Small sailboat with a cabin? Check! Fun to sail? Modern design? Capable of flying a spinnaker? Check! Check! Check! The Finot-Conq-designed Beneteau First 20, which replaced the popular Beneteau first 211 nearly a decade ago now, is a sporty-but-stable pocket cruiser suitable for newcomers to the sport who are eager to learn their chops before moving up to a bigger boat or for old salts looking to downsize to a trailerable design. The boat features twin rudders, a lifting keel, and a surprisingly roomy interior with bunks for four. Click here to read more about the Beneteau First 20 .

Ranger 26

Conceived as a way to bridge the gap between a safe, comfortable, family cruiser and a competitive racer, Gary Mull’s Ranger 26 does exactly as it was designed to. Undeniably fast, (one won the 1970 IOR North American Half-Ton Cup) the boat sails as well as it looks. However speed isn’t the Ranger’s only strong-suit, with over 7 feet of cockpit there’s plenty of room for socializing after an evening of racing. The Ranger 26 sports a nice balance of freeboard and cabin height ensuring that a handsome profile wasn’t sacrificed for standing headroom. Click here to read more about the Ranger 26.

Nonsuch 30 left side

Catboats were once a common site in coastal waters, where they sailed the shallow bays as fishing or work boats. Their large single and often gaff-rigged sail provided plenty of power, and a centerboard made them well-suited for the thin waters they frequently encountered. In the late 1970s, Canadian builder Hinterhoeller introduced the Nonsuch 30, a fiberglass variation of the catboat design, with a modern Marconi sail flown on a stayless mast, and a keel instead of a centerboard. The boat’s wide beam made room below for a spacious interior, and the design caught on quickly with cruising sailors looking for a small bluewater sailboat. Click here to read more about the Nonsuch 30 .

– SHOW THEM HOW MUCH YOU CARE – Nothing says ‘I love you’ like making sure the kids’ life jackets are snugged up and properly buckled. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

Newport 27

Debuted in 1971 in California, the Newport 27 was an instant success on the local racing scene. For a modest 27-footer, the Newport 27 has an unusually spacious interrior with over 6 feet of standing headroom. With 4 berths, a table, nav station, head and galley the Newport 27 has all the amenities you might find in a much bigger boat, all in a compact package. While quick in light air, the drawback of the tiller steering becomes apparent with increasing breeze and weather helm often leading to shortening sail early. Click here to read more about the Newport 27.

Balboa 26

First splashed in 1969, the Balboa 26 continues to enjoy a strong following among budget-minded cruisers. Built sturdy and heavy, all of the boat’s stress points are reinforced. The spacious cockpit comfortably seats 4 and is self bailing, ensuring that sailors stay dry. While only 26 feet, the Balboa still has room for a double berth, galley with stove and freshwater pump, and an optional marine head or V-berth. The Balboa has the ability to sleep five, though the most comfortable number is two or three. Under sail, the Balboa is fast and maneuverable, but may prove a handful in heavy breeze as weather helm increases. Click here to read more about the Balboa 26.

Cape Dory 28

Cape Dory 28

While the sleek lines and the teak accents of the Cape Dory 28 may grab the eye, it is the performance of the boat that make it unique. The Cape Dory comes with all amenities that you might need available, including a V-berth, 2 settees, and a head. Safe, sound and comfortable as a cruiser it is still capable of speed. Quick in light wind and sturdy and capable in heavy air, it is off the wind where the Cape Dory 28 shines with a balanced helm and the ability to cut through chop and still tack perfectly. Click here to read more about the Cape Dory 28.

Islander Bahama 28

Islander Bahama 28

On top of being a real eye-catcher, the Islander Bahama 28, with its 5-foot-6-inch draft and 3,300 pounds of ballast, sails beautifully, tracks well, and responds quickly to the helm. Inspired by the International Offshore Rule, it is unusually wide, offering stability in breeze without sacrificing the sheer and lines that make it so attractive. Below deck, the Islander Bahama 28 comes standard with plenty of berths and storage space and a galley complete with stove, icebox and sink. Click here to read more about the Islander Bahama 28.

– CHECK THE WEATHER – The weather changes all the time. Always check the forecast and prepare for the worst case. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

S2 8.6

Much like its older sibling, the S2 8.6 still holds its contemporary style, despite its 1983 introduction. Like all other S2 Yachts, the 8.6 is recognized for the quality craftsmanship that allows the boat to hold up today. The S2 8.6 is a very comfortable and easily managed coastal cruiser and club racer. It’s relatively stiff, its helm feels balanced, and it tracks well. On most points of sail, it compares favorably with other boats of similar size and type. Click here to read more about the S2 8.6.

Contessa 26

Contessa 26

When the Contessa 26 was released in 1965, it immediately proved itself to be a strong, seaworthy vessel. The Contessa has continued to prove itself throughout its lifetime, being the boat of choice for two solo circumnavigations under the age of 21. While upwind performance leaves some wanting, the boat is sturdy and can carry full sail in up to 20 knots of breeze. Suited more for single-handing, the Contessa lacks standing headroom and the accommodations are sparse. Nonetheless, the Contessa 26 performs well as a daysailer with guests aboard. Click here to read more about the Contessa 26.

Hunter 27

The Hunter 27 perfectly encompasses the pocket cruiser ideal. Even if you don’t want a big boat, you can still have big boat amenities. With the generously spacious layout, wheel steering and a walkthrough transom the Hunter feels much larger than 27 feet. Step below deck and any doubts you had that the Hunter was secretly a big boat will be gone. The amenities below are endless; a full galley including stove, microwave and cooler, head with full shower, several berths and not to mention a saloon with seating for 6. The Hunter 27 has reset the benchmark for 27-footers. Click here to read more about the Hunter 27.

Turning back 'small boats' in Channel would risk sinking them with more migrants dying, warns minister

WEST END FINAL

Turning back “small boats” in the Channel would risk sinking them and leading to more migrants dying, says a minister.

Border security minister Dame Angela Eagle also insisted that French authorities were co-operating with the UK to stop often unseaworthy inflatable boats packed by crime gangs with men, women and children from leaving the shores of northern France.

The French authorities, though, have been accused of doing too little to stop the “small boats” crossings, with claims they are prepared to let the vessels reach UK waters when the migrants then have to be brought to Dover or another British port.

Asked why the British authorities were simply not turning back the boats to force them back to France, Dame Angela told LBC Radio: “A lot of them are so flimsy and it’s a major shipping lane.

“The issue is if you tried to turn them back you can sink them and cause more deaths.”

She claimed that in “a lot of cases” the boats overcrowded with migrants willing to risk their lives to get to Britain were being escorted back to France.

“We work very closely with our French counterparts, she added.

The human trafficking gangs are now packing 60 to 70 people, many without life jackets, into the migrant boats as they seek to rake in more cash from their “vile” trade.

“We have an increase in these tragic deaths,” added the minister.

“It’s a very dangerous crossing.

“Every person we end up stopping getting on a boat I consider to be a potential life saved.”

On Sunday, French authorities said eight people had died trying to cross the Channel after their boat got into difficulty , bringing the death toll in attempted crossings to 46 since the start of the year.

Italy has succeeded in reducing the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to its shores by around two thirds by work “upstream” with countries in Africa, better co-operation with North African countries, targeting the crime gangs, quick returns of failed asylum seekers and is now pushing ahead with processing asylum claims in Albania.

Italy has paid Tunisia millions of pounds to stop migrant boats leaving its shores heading for Italy.

Dame Angela defended Sir Keir Starmer holding talks on dealing with the migration crisis with Italy’s Hard Right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Monday.

She stressed that the discussions should not be taken as an endorsement of all her migration policies.

“But we are meeting a G7 country and a fellow Nato member to see how we can co-operate across border to deal with some of these vile people smuggling gangs,” Dame Angela told Sky News.

“That is the announcement I’m making about the £75 million extra to beef up the border security command and that means that we can send people into Europol, extra investigators, more intelligence, we can work with our partners across Europe and in other places to try and put a stop to this vile trade.”

The new Government in the UK is seeking to stem the flow of “small boats” across the Channel by smashing the crime gangs behind it, more work “upstream” to disrupt the human trafficking trade and speeding up the return of failed asylum seekers to their home country.

More raids are also being carried out on restaurants, builders and other firms to stop illegal working in Britain.

Ministers are also looking at the Italian-style asylum claims processing scheme being set up in Albania.

Advantages of Owning Smaller Yachts: Adrian Morgan’s Boat Scale

Adrian Morgan boat size drawing by Charlotte Watters

Is it better to own a smaller yacht? Adrian Morgan’s column weighs up the advantages of scaling down…

Thinking of buying a smaller yacht.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that… the smaller the [wooden] boat the greater the pleasure, and I would add, just as important, far less of a chore to fit out. It takes time enough to sand, fill, prime and paint Sally’s topsides, then I look to my right where stands, propped up in the yard, a yacht not many feet longer than my modest 25 footer, and I thank goodness for small boats. Z4s, Hillyards, Debens of various kinds, et al, the list is long.

Those hardy souls who camp in dinghies under ingenious tents, heating their rations on portable gas stoves, get even more of my admiration. It’s great to be invited aboard a big wooden classic, and I treasure my time racing the McGruer Kelana, or squatting on the aft deck of Moonbeam, but would not envy her owners the task of maintaining them every year to the highest standards. That’s like grooming an elephant, when all you really have the energy for is to stroke a kitten. One is exhausting, the other is relaxing. Up to a point.

I reckon 25ft is about as much as one person can maintain, allowing a day for each of the annual chores. A day to sand the topsides, another to strip the varnish, one to antifoul , and so on. Sally comes into that category, but even so, after a week which begins with despair at the task facing me, then satisfaction in seeing the work list slowly shrink, towards the final push to complete all by the time the yard want to launch her, I have lost much of the enthusiasm and just want to see her floating to her waterline again at her mooring in Loggie Bay, a spit opposite the yard where she has been for a couple of weeks.

That 34 footer alongside Sally is more like a three- or four-day per chore boat, and I would not want to be the one to have to tackle the towering wall of gleaming white enamel every few years. Besides, you’d need staging, not the wooden ladder up and down which I clambered these past weeks. And I can just about reach much of Sally’s topsides from the ground, and the higher bits by standing on a few keel blocks placed around her.

Adding a few feet to a boat’s length increases the work at fitting out exponentially. I used to long for the day when, flushed with cash from a series of best selling nautical murder mysteries I could scribble a list of what needed doing and let the experts at the yard get on with it. I would write cheques, and appear at launching. In fact last year I tentatively asked if anyone might be free to lay on a perfect coat of Hempel’s Polar White , as I’ve seen the difference between my efforts and those of a professional. I was once given a badger haired – I think it was, or perhaps Madagascan squirrel – laying off brush, something I’d not come across before, by a painter of superyachts. Apparently you apply the paint, then quickly caress the surface with the fine. I tried it once, but never again. It’s hard enough to keep a wet edge without stopping to caress what you’ve just achieved with the neck fluff of an exotic creature. Nope, Sally’s topsides are again this year flawless… from a distance, and that’s the way they will stay, until a new owner familiar with the techniques of laying on brushes, and (the correct) thinners takes her on.

Don’t get me wrong; maintaining a small wooden yacht as best you can, given sunny days and plenty of time is a vital and mostly pleasurable component of ownership. Once a year you get the chance to pore over every inch of her, stroke her flanks intimately in a way that is more akin to the grooming rituals of the animal world. For fleas, read flaking paint and tangles, small divots. And this year, annus mirabilis, I may finally have managed to achieve what I am hoping will be the perfect waterline. Hoping, as she has yet to be launched as I write this. After nearly thirty years of ownership, perhaps this time…

Eight dead after attempting to cross Channel - as 801 people arrived in UK on small boats yesterday

It comes as French authorities rescued some 200 people off the coast of Calais over a 24-hour period between Friday and Saturday night.

At least eight migrants have died off the coast of France while attempting to cross the English Channel - as new data reveals 801 people arrived on the UK's shores yesterday.

The latest government figures show those who arrived made their journey on Saturday in 14 boats.

It is the second-highest number of arrivals this year. The current record for the highest number of arrivals in one day this year so far is 882 in 15 boats on 18 June.

The deaths occurred after a vessel "tore apart on the rocks" off Ambleteuse in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France overnight, a regional official said.

"Driven by profit, human traffickers are putting more and more lives at risk, selling crossings in dangerous conditions on ill-suited boats," the official, Jacques Billant, said. "This is literally leading them to their deaths.

"The boats are overloaded, of poor quality, underinflated, without proper flooring, underpowered, and lack life jackets for all passengers."

Only one in six people on the boat had a life jacket, he added.

A boat carrying migrants that was in poor condition was located off the coast of Le Portel, a French coastal town, and 55 people were rescued.

Elsewhere, 61 people were picked up off the coast of La Becque d'Hardelot, 48 people were recovered near a lighthouse and at the end of the day 36 more were rescued, French authorities said.

All of those rescued were brought back to land.

French authorities said they monitored 18 attempts to launch boats across the Channel on Saturday.

Responding to the disaster, Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: "It's awful. It's a further loss of life."

He added that the government has been "discussing how we go after those gangs, in cooperation upstream with other European partners".

Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper, said it was "desperately, desperately sad" and while her party supports the government's plan to "smash the gangs", they want them to reopen safe and legal routes for asylum seekers.

The Conservatives closed down lots of those routes, which allowed asylum seekers to apply in the UK but from another safe country.

She said: "It would mean they wouldn't have to make that treacherous journey so we hope very much the government succeeds in smashing the gangs.

"But it has to come with both tackling the security element of it and the criminal element of it while making sure we have the right routes for people who have genuine asylum claims."

Steve Valdez-Symonds, Amnesty International UK's refugee and migrant rights director, said: "This is yet another appalling and avoidable tragedy and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who've died.

"These perilous crossings are seemingly becoming more and more dangerous, suggesting smugglers are taking greater chances with people's lives as they try to evade detection efforts by the UK and French authorities."

He added: "The government's 'smash the gangs' slogan and its security-heavy approach is contributing to the death toll because the refusal to establish safe asylum routes means these flimsy vessels controlled by people smugglers are the only real option for desperate people fleeing persecution."

Mr Valdez-Symonds added: "Until UK ministers and their counterparts in France start sharing responsibility over the need for safe routes, we should expect this weekend's tragedy to keep repeating itself time and time again."

It comes less than two weeks after at least 12 people, including 10 women and girls, died after a boat with dozens of migrants tore apart in the English Channel .

The French coastguard said more than 65 people were rescued after the vessel got into difficulties off the coast of Cap Gris-Nez.

Ex-police chief to lead efforts to tackle small boats

yacht with small boat inside

Former police chief Martin Hewitt has been appointed to lead the UK's new Border Security Command, which will focus on tackling small boat crossings.

As chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), Mr Hewitt previously coordinated action by UK police forces on issues including terrorism and organised crime.

He will join Sir Keir Starmer on a visit to Rome on Monday, where the prime minister will meet his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni to learn from her country's approach to tackling illegal migration.

Italy has recently seen a dramatic fall in the number of migrants making the dangerous crossing from north Africa.

Reducing the number of people crossing the Channel from France in small boats is one of the major challenges facing the new Labour government.

Over the weekend eight people died attempting the crossing .

The Border Security Command will bring together intelligence agencies, police and border force officials to tackle the smuggling gangs behind small boat crossings.

Mr Hewitt led the NPCC between 2019 and 2023 and previously served as an assistant commissioner in the Metropolitan Police.

Downing Street said his experience coordinating the work of police, government and other agencies, including responding to major securing threats and managing the UK's response to the Covid pandemic, was "key to his appointment".

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "No more gimmicks. This government will tackle the smuggling gangs who trade the lives of men, women and children across borders.

"Martin Hewitt’s unique expertise will lead a new era of international enforcement to dismantle these networks, protect our shores and bring order to the asylum system."

Mr Hewitt said: "I am under no illusions of the challenges that lie ahead, but I am determined to face them head-on.

“For too long, the criminal gangs who smuggle people through Europe have abused our borders in the name of profit, and they are responsible for the deaths of scores of vulnerable, innocent people."

During their visit to Rome, Sir Keir and Mr Hewitt will tour Italy's National Coordination Centre for Migration to see how the country responds to illegal migration and discuss future cooperation.

Over the weekend, Sir Keir said he was "interested" in Italy's migration deal with Albania, under which migrants rescued at sea will be sent to the Balkan country while their asylum claims are processed.

Asked whether he would consider pursuing a similar agreement, Sir Keir said: "Let's see. It's in the early days, I'm interested in how that works, I think everybody else is."

Reception centres in Albania are due to open later this year, after some delays.

After winning power, Labour scrapped the previous Conservative government's plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda from the UK.

Under the Italian agreement, migrants will still be able to apply for asylum in Italy while they are in Albania. If refused, they will face deportation.

This differs from the now-abandoned Rwanda scheme, where asylum seekers would not have been allowed to return to the UK if their claim was accepted and would instead have been able to stay in Rwanda.

A Conservative Party spokesman said: "Keir Starmer has absolutely no plan to stop the boats, and that’s why he’s now resorting to trying to copy others."

He said Labour had "scrapped this country’s deterrent to illegal immigration and signalled to the vile people smuggling gangs they were not willing to take the serious action needed to stop the boats".

Starmer to discuss migrant boat crossings with Meloni in Italy

Italy prepares to open controversial migrant centre in albania.

Frontex, the EU’s border force, has calculated a 64% drop this year in those making the crossing from North Africa to Italy.

Central to the fall in crossings to Italy are financial deals struck with Tunisia and Libya – where most people depart from for Europe.

The EU has given Tunisia funding to boost border security, while Italy has supplied patrol vessels and given the government money to support small companies and invest in education and renewable energy.

Italian Prime Minister Meloni, who leads a right-wing coalition in Italy, was a close ally of Sir Keir's Conservative predecessor Rishi Sunak.

Sir Keir's visit comes as he seeks a wider "reset" of relations with Europe after Brexit, and follows meetings with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Yacht Guest Bedrooms (2 Beds)

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

Large yacht salon interior

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

8 Affordable Small Boats With Several Beds (With Pictures)

' src=

When you are looking for a boat for overnight travel, you will want to make sure that you have a place to sleep.

If you only plan on spending a few nights on the boat, a boat that offers two beds will likely be perfect for your needs.

A small boat with two beds is the perfect size for overnight trips with the family.

Table of Contents

8 Great Boat With Sleeping Areas (For Two Persons)

When you are shopping for boats that feature sleeping areas, you will want to know the basics.

When looking for a bed or sleeping area on a watercraft, it is often referred to as a “berth”. These can be similarly sized to traditional beds.

In a listing, you could be looking at a “queen birth” which would be similar in size to a queen-sized bed.

These may or may not be featured in their own individual cabins. If you need the privacy of an individual cabin you will want to make sure this is specified that way.

Having a place to sleep aboard your vessel is not only good for overnight trips.

Having a bed aboard allows for naps or the ability to lie down if you happen to become ill. This can make a huge difference in comfort while trying to get back to shore.

6 Boats With Two Berths:

Depending on what type of boat you are looking for, you should be able to find plenty of options with two beds.

Sailboats are often available with plenty of cabin space that makes living or overnight trips more comfortable.

One of the luxuries that are often included is plenty of sleeping space. This can include multiple berths.

Cruisers are also a great boat when it comes to cabin space.

These boats offer luxurious cabin space even on smaller vessels. Cruisers also have on deck seating in case you want to sit out on the deck while you are motoring.

These cruisers could be single or multi-hulled vessels.

There is often more space and privacy on a catamaran and other options of multi-hulled vessel than on a single-hulled vessel.

Sleeping is also easier on a multi-hulled vessel because the engines are less likely to be built right into the living space.

Not only are they more spacious and quiet, but they are often more steady and safe. There are a lot of benefits to a multi-hulled vessel. They are, however, more costly.

1. Catalina 355:

There is an aft cabin berth that features an innerspring mattress as well.

This boat also offers a head that has a hot and cold shower as well as a toilet.

2. Regal Express Cruiser:

yacht with small boat inside

The Regal Express Cruiser offers many well thought out features that make this vessel perfect for comfortable gatherings of friends and family.

This boat offers an ultra lounge that features seating that you can both lie down or sit up on.

This vessel’s deck is also a single level. This allows for everyone to be on the same level with the same view.

The tower can be lowered mechanically in case you need to go under a bridge or just tuck it down for other reasons. This is easy and efficient and can reduce time fiddling with a complex manual system.

The cabin features luxury leather and hardwoods that look attractive and sleek.

This boat also offers a queen-size berth in the front of the vessel that you can raise or lower for more space in the boat.

This bed can be queen or king-sized with an option to convert into oversized twin beds. This makes it easy to reconfigure your layout at needed.

3. Bavaria Easy 9.7:

The Bavaria Easy 9.7 sailboat is a 32′ 7″ yacht that offers a comfortable cabin that is perfect for overnight travel.

This boat comes with a spacious deck that is not full of clutter which helps make it safe and easily maneuverable.

This vessel comes with two cabins that include a small galley, bathroom, and four berths.

This boat is perfect for taking multiple people out on the water and ensuring everyone’s comfort.

4. Leopard 40:

yacht with small boat inside

The Nerea Yacht NY24 is a luxurious option that features refined features. This boat features an inboard motor and a planing hull.

Despite this boat being compact, it still offers plenty of features that are perfect for entertaining overnight. Even though the interior is only 7.35 meters long, it still features a large sofa that can be converted into a double berth.

If you do not one bed, the container sofa is designed to allow two people to sleep separately as well. It’s a comfortable sleeping area with two separate beds. Just what you need.

This vessel also offers two drawer refrigerators, a concealed sink, a concealed stove, a dinette that can extend into a sunbathing area, and an enclosed toilet.

The cabin has a lot of natural light thanks to two long windows on the sides of the boat as well as double sliding glass doors to allow easy access into the cabin.

2 Boats That Can Sleep Two:

If you do not need two separate beds but are instead looking for comfortable accommodations for two people that might include a couple, you will have some additional options.

Most boats that feature a cuddy cabin have enough space to sleep, two people.

This is a comfortable way to stay overnight on your vessel that might be smaller or more inexpensive.

Oftentimes you can change the cuddy cabins with the rearranging of cushions to create bench seating or other options.

The drawback to a cuddy cabin vessel is that you do not get the same amenities that the previous vessels offered.

This includes things such as a kitchen or shower.

You can still have a bathroom in a cuddy, but it will likely be portable and stow under your cuddy cushions.

7. Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin:

yacht with small boat inside

The Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin is great for both safety and performance. This boat features a z-plane hull that allows it to raise and plane quicker than other hull designs.

This boat is small and is just about 23 feet long. This boat offers a spacious cockpit and cabin for such a small sporting boat.

Maximum passengers for this boat is 10 people and there is sleeping space available for 2 to 3.

The cabin featured on the boat has a v-berth as well as amenities. This cabin also is able to be locked to provide the necessary privacy.

This boat offers plenty of storage as well as amenities including a freshwater sink, stowaway portable head with level indicator, and an automatic fire extinguishing system.

Safety and comfort are the main priority in this small boat that is perfect for overnight boating.

8. Bayliner 742 Cuddy:

yacht with small boat inside

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bayliner boats are sleek and high performing boats that really focus on the small details.

Comfortable seating including a folding sun lounge is sure to please any passenger aboard. This vessel also features a co-pilot seat that can extend to form a chaise lounge.

This boat places a high focus on entertaining and includes features such as a cockpit entertainment center with built-in sink. There is also an optional cockpit table.

The cabin features sleeping space for two people with plenty of natural light from the skylights and ventilated portlights.

The deck features plenty of storage, even an in-floor locker for water sports equipment like skis and wakeboards.

You can also swim off the swim platform with telescoping ladder.

Necessary Equipment For Sleeping On The Boat

Simply having a boat that offers sleeping space is not enough. You will also want to make sure that your sleeping areas are comfortable.

This may seem self-explanatory, but you will want to make sure your berths feature clean sheets, warm blankets, and pillows.

Keeping linens and blankets on a boat is different than in a house.

A boat can be compared to a damp basement. When you have blankets in a wet and humid basement, you can get damp blankets that can even become moldy over time.

To combat this, there are a few options you can utilize.

One way to combat damp and musty blankets and linens are to make sure that you do not store them in the boat when you are not using it. Keeping them in a dry house is a great way to prevent this problem entirely.

This is not very effective if you plan a multiple-day trip and your boat accumulates a lot of moisture.

Making sure that you properly insulate your boat, or even investing in a dehumidifier can do wonders to combat damp and musty conditions.

Another good tip is to dry your blankets and other cushions out if they are wet or damp. You can do this by hanging them up inside the cabin, but is even more effective out in the sun.

You also want to make sure that your mattress itself doesn’t get damp. This can make sleep very uncomfortable.

Keeping your bedding dry at all times is key to having a clean and comfortable bed to fall into at night.

Make Sure To Be Prepared:

In addition to having the proper sleeping equipment, if you plan to spend longer than a few hours on your vessel you will want to make sure you are prepared in other ways as well.

If your boat doesn’t offer private cabins or other private areas, you can purchase a private changing room. These can be as simple as a pop-up changing area. This can be ideal for changing out of a wet swimsuit and into what you plan to sleep in.

You will also need other more practical things. Most of these options came with their own head, but if they didn’t, you will want to invest in one. This can be a simple portable option but will still be easier than possibly having to go to land every time nature calls.

It is also important that you have enough food and water. Water is very important to prevent dehydration while out in the sun. You will want to make sure that you pack enough water for everyone. If there is one thing that should be “over-packed” it should be water.

This is important for your health as well as your thirst.

You will also need food if you plan on traveling to a place where stopping somewhere for food is not a feasible option.

You also want to be prepared for the weather. Make sure you have the proper clothing for any weather occasion. Even on a warm summer day, nights can get cold out on the water. Make sure you have the proper long clothes and blankets.

Things like sunscreen and bug spray can also be life-saving while out on the water all day and night.

You will also want a flashlight for when it gets dark out. This will not only prevent you from waking the other passengers up but can help you save your boat battery from potential overuse.

Finally, emergency equipment should always be featured on your vessel. This includes a fire extinguisher, life jackets for every passenger, flares, and emergency contact channels including phones and radios.

If you are properly prepared, you can have a fun and stress-free experience while out on the water.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you are looking for a vessel that sleeps two people, a vessel that comes with two separate beds, or even a boat that can sleep more than two people, you will have plenty of options.

With innovative designs, smaller boats are able to offer more luxuries in their cabins than they were previously. This is because they use space more creatively and efficiently.

This wider variety of options means that there is a boat for every budget that will match your needs. Even if those needs are the ability to stay on your boat comfortably overnight.

Buying a used boat can be a great way to save money if you are looking for a vessel that is a little bigger or more equipped than a small cuddy cabin.

Make sure that you are properly equipped when you go out on your boat, especially for overnight stays.

The main thing to remember is to make sure both you and your passengers are comfortable. If you are not comfortable, your experience will likely be less enjoyable.

Overnight boating, or even camping on your vessel can be a great way to have fun with your loved ones and make some memories.

Confession: I LOVE stuffed and roasted vegetables. They're such an easy way to serve up veggies in an appetising way and zucchini are particularly good for it as they are a milder tasting vegetable that can take on other flavours well. This was inspired by Yemista or Greek stuffed vegetables.

Tips for Making Stuffed Zucchini Boats

Stuffed Zucchini Boats

1 - I have a really handy little zucchini corer that makes fast work of coring the zucchini. You can find these at Middle Eastern stores.

2 - If you don't have pork and fennel sausage, you can sub with your other favourite sausage or you can also use mince like chicken, turkey or beef mince. You may just add a bit more seasoning as sausages have seasoning added to them.

3 - I actually recommend doubling the quantity and doing this in two trays. The leftovers are really delicious the next day and they reheat very well.

4 - Some recipes call for you to scoop out the seeds in the centre and discard them. We use them in the stuffing, especially with smaller zucchinis where the seeds are tiny and cook down well in the filling mixture.

5 - I cover these with foil for the first part of the cooking so that they don't dry out.

6 - Only add the cheese in in the last 10 minutes once you have uncovered the zucchini otherwise the cheese will brown and dry out.

Although zucchini aren't really my favourite vegetable and I wouldn't ever really buy them I get them in my vegetable box and every fortnight it's a mad scramble to use everything up. There are some vegetables that I love like salad leaves, tomatoes, broccolini and snow peas and there are some that I just want to use up. I don't think I've ever really thrown anything out because it has gone off because the vege box isn't cheap and I don't like to waste money or food.

I came across this phrase recently that I have started using. It's when someone is cheap they have "short arms". Like their hands can't reach to their pockets to pay for anything. Most of my friends don't have short arms. My friends and I are always giving each other things and we would honestly give the shirts off our own backs.

My friend Agatha (not her real name, she wants to stay anonymous on this in case her friend read this!) has a friend called April. Agatha is always doing things for April and April is not shy to ask for things.

Stuffed Zucchini Boats

"Could you pick me up?" April will ask even though she lives in the opposite direction and has a car. Agatha always drives them and when it comes to parking Agatha always ends up paying (and parking in Sydney isn't cheap). April stands there with her hands in her pockets or dawdling when getting out of the car. And when it comes to paying for dinner April often forgets to pay Agatha for her portion of the bill and she has to hassle her to get the money. She is fond of April and she does of course have a good, fun side but her attitude towards money is annoying for Agatha.

Every time I see Agatha she tells me about another instance where April has cheaped out. "She has short arms!" I told Agatha. She laughed and pointed out that April's arm length was standard but I explained the saying of short arms to her. And from now on, we both use that phrase to describe someone that juuuust can't reach their pockets to pay for their share!

So tell me Dear Reader, do you know anyone with "short arms"? And do you try and use everything from your fridge if possible?

An Original Recipe by Lorraine Elliott

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 50 minutes

Serves: 2-4 people with a side dish

  • 4x 170g/6oz zucchinis or courgettes
  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • 1 white or brown onion, peeled and diced
  • 200g/7ozs pork and fennel sausage, cases removed, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and diced
  • 2 cups/500ml/1pint marinara or red pasta sauce, divided
  • 2 teaspoons Italian herb mix
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 50g/1.7ozs parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • 150g/5ozs mozzarella, grated

Stuffed Zucchini Boats

Step 1 - Cut the zucchinis in half lengthways and trim the tops off. Scoop out the centre with a teaspoon or a zucchini corer - you want to dig out enough to fit in a lot of the flavoursome filling but don't go all the way to the edge, leave a border (as shown). Fit them snugly into a baking dish. Finely chop up the zucchini centres.

Step 2 - Add oil to a saucepan and sauté the onion on medium heat for 3-4 minutes or until soft and fragrant. Add the sausage meat and brown until almost completely cooked making sure to break it up with a wooden spoon. Add the garlic and saute for 1 minute. Then add 1.5 cups pasta sauce, chopped zucchini centres and Italian herb mix and sauté for 10 minutes. Take off the heat. Spoon this mixture into the zucchini and then spoon the extra pasta sauce on top of this. Add 3 tablespoons of water to the dish and cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle the parmesan cheese and then the mozzarella on top and bake for another 10 minutes or until melted and starting to brown.
