  • Yachtmaster Ocean Fast Track

The Yachtmaster Ocean Fast Track in Sydney first trains you for your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. Then, you go on to learn celestial navigation and complete an ocean-qualifying passage in preparation for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean oral exam.

Description

Yachtmaster Ocean Bass Strait

Our innovative course programme provides an exhilarating mix of training and a reliable route to certification.

We promise expert tuition, a stimulating learning environment and a great Australian sailing adventure.

Course Schedule

The programme comprises a package of individual training courses built into a balanced and progressive training schedule.

Training time is divided between live-aboard periods, daysailing courses and shore-based theory classes.

Weekends are usually free, but we encourage you to join our dinghy sailing and windsurfing classes (at no cost) to develop core sailing skills or join a Flying Fish weekend course as a mate to one of our qualified yacht instructors.

Racing enthusiasts can often go yacht racing with Middle Harbour Yacht Club owners.

See the Faq section below for a full breakdown of the week-by-week training schedule.

If you join our September course, there is a 3-week break in training over the Christmas period, and the ocean passage to Lord Howe Island begins in Hobart, Tasmania and finishes in Sydney. If you choose the February course, there is no break in the schedule, and the Ocean Passage starts and finishes in Sydney.

Fantastic sailing areas

The course is based in a spectacular setting at Flying Fish Sail Academy, Middle Harbour Yacht Club, Sydney.

You sail in Sydney Harbour, Australia's favourite yachting playground, cruising past the Opera House and under the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Offshore, you explore the New South Wales coast, heading south to Jervis Bay or north to Pittwater, Seal Rocks and Coffs Harbour.

The Ocean passage goes to Lord Howe Island, an absolute jewel in the Pacific with beautiful beaches and a magnificent coral lagoon.

The diving and snorkelling are world-class, and weather permitting, the crew will spend a couple of days relaxing and exploring this beautiful island before we set sail for the passage back to Sydney.

Weather conditions vary from warm sea breezes to cool southerly busters.

You will experience magnificent seascapes, dolphins, whales and, of course, flying fish! This is offshore sailing at its best.

Equipment and instructors

We operate a fleet of excellent training vessels, including Beneteau 40.7 cruiser racers, SV Arctos (a Radford 55 built for a southern ocean circumnavigation) and our luxury yacht Calypso, a state-of-the-art Moody 54 Deck Saloon.

We also have a fleet of Laser Bahia and RS Zest training dinghies and Highfield rigid inflatable boats, which we use in the early part of the programme.

yachtmaster course australia

For shore-based training, we have a comfortable waterside classroom equipped with various modern teaching aids and equipment.

Our team of experienced instructors will guide you through your programme in the friendly and professional style that is the hallmark of Flying Fish.

  • Where to stay ashore

If you don't live in Sydney, you will need a place to stay for the duration of your course.

We have limited availability in Flying Fish serviced crew apartments in Manly, staying with other Flying Fish customers on one of Australia's most beautiful beaches. Or you can book your own place.

  • Having attained YM Offshore, the RYA YM Ocean oral exam is arranged by the candidate directly with the examiner for a time after completion of the course; the candidate pays exam fees.
  • If you book our September course, we include an economy-class flight from Sydney to Hobart to start the ocean passage.

About Southern Cross Yachting Southern Cross Yachting began operating in March 1997 with one yacht. Since that time the school has grown and has forged a reputation as Australia’s foremost yacht training school. Over the past 16 years Southern Cross Yachting has trained over 10 000 students, both Australians and visitors from overseas. The School reputation has been built on its commitment to service and the quality of its instructional staff. All instructional staff have been selected and trained by Principal Michael Job – Australia’s most qualified Yachtmaster instructor. The school is committed not just to delivering the finest sail training tuition available, but making the experience as enjoyable as possible! As the only person to have been both an AYF and RYA Yachtmaster offshore Examiner Mike is uniquely qualified to design a Fast track course for Australian and international waters. The school operates a fleet of quality (all over 35 feet) yachts based at East Coast Marina in Manly Yacht Harbour – the largest recreational yacht harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. Shore based courses are held at our water side classroom close to all facilities. Southern Cross Yachting is located in the picturesque village of Manly – a bay side suburb of Brisbane, capital of the state of Queensland and Australia’s 3rd largest city. We are only 20 minutes drive from Brisbane’s International airport and only 1 hours drive from the world famous beaches of the Gold and Sunshine coasts. Manly is the gateway to Moreton Bay – truly a yachting paradise and a sail training theme park! Accredited by the Australian Yachting Federation for 7 years, Southern Cross Yachting was the first Sea School to gain RYA recognition in Australia and now offers RYA courses exclusively.

Training Waters Moreton Bay Let’s keep it a Secret! Moreton Bay Marine Park must be the best kept secret in the sailing world! From the white sands and turquoise water of Moreton Island the bay stretches south for 60 miles to the Gold Coast Broadwater- a sailing paradise that offers a unique diversification of surroundings and sailing conditions. At the northern end of our training grounds the Bay is some 20 miles wide with the magnificent anchorages of Moreton Island on the eastern side (including the famous Tangalooma Wrecks) and the marinas of Redcliffe and Sandgate on the mainland side. South of this the bay starts to narrow as you pass the entrance to the majestic Brisbane River – only 15 miles upstream you can moor in a marina in the heart of the city. South of the river mouth lie the historic islands of St Helena , Green, Stradbroke and Peel which offer good anchorages. With a labyrinth of islands between here and the Broadwater there is all round shelter for over 20 miles. This complex waterway leads to the marinas and anchorages of the Gold Coast with all it has to offer. The bay is alive with bird and marine life; dolphins and dugong are seen regularly and the odd whale breaching at the northern end! This is one of the world’s most unspoilt cruising grounds – come and see for yourself ! With its complex channels, bubbling tidal streams (up to 6 knots), 2 metre tidal range and multitude of harbours , rivers and creeks Moreton Bay is a yacht training theme park! On our offshore passages we will cruise the superb Queensland coast to destinations such as Fraser Island, Tin Can Bay, Hervey Bay and the Whitsundays These challenging waters offer the widest possible variety of conditions and opportunities, necessary to gain as many varied experiences as possible during your training. Our training grounds are unique, certainly in Australia and possibly the world with tidal waters, challenging navigation and warm water all in magnificent sub-tropical climate. Take the training opportunities of the south coast of UK , mix it with the climate of the Caribbean (sans Hurricanes) and you have Queensland ! And don’t forget the exchange rate!

Training Yachts The Southern Cross Yachting training fleet are all quality offshore yachts fully equipped to the highest specification, are all in commercial survey and conform to the demanding MCA Code of practice requirements. The fleet has been assembled to offer students a wide variety of experiences, on yachts similar to those that commercial skippers will be operating. The fleet includes both racing and cruising “Charter style yachts” – all 35 feet or over and all comfortably fitted out. Students will experience tiller, dual and single wheel steering. The fleet includes –

  • OCEANS is a SYDNEY 41 Cruiser/Racer built by Bashford Yachts in NSW. She is an identical sister ship to the 50th Sydney to Hobart winner ‘Raptor’ . Oceans has a masthead rig and wheel steering and has a comfortable cruising fit-out below. Oceans will be used for RYA training, offshore trips and next years Brisbane to Gladstone Race Training Package. If you thought ‘Blue Max’ sailed well wait til you experience the joy of sailing this yacht !
  • CAPPRICIO JEANNEAU SUN ODDISSEY 40 3 cabin masthead rigged charter yacht. Twin wheels and luxury all the way.
  • PACER Ideal for extending sailing skills.

Introduction

This course is designed to take the complete sailing novice to become a professional sailor in the sailing industry in an intensive accelerated course over fifteen weeks. The course culminates in the Yachtmaster Offshore Exam by an independent RYA Yachtmaster Examiner. This is a 10 hour practical and oral examination on all aspects of sailing a yacht in difficult circumstances. Provided you are hard working we will have you fully prepared and confident of passing the exam over the 3 months. We have run 11 successful Professional Yachtmaster Programs since the schools opening in 2011 and have almost 100% success rate in that every student has passed the exam first time after our training program. This is largely to do with having a small number of students and being able to focus on each students own weaknesses leading up to the exam. We have successfully trained students in the past who have gone on to work all over the world in different sectors of the sailing industry, from charter base managers, to delivery skippers, to Yachtmaster Instructors to yacht brokers to Riggers. We have developed contacts within the sailing industry over the past 10 years which you can call upon to help you achieve your first job in your new career within the yachting industry. The course is geared towards a career in the yachting industry, but we have a variety of students from guys in their 30s and 40s looking for a career change, to school leavers looking for an alternate second career before attending university to newly retired people looking to change their approach to their own sailing, a to finally sail in a professional confident way.

yachtmaster course australia

The course is divided into 3 modules of four to five weeks in duration. Students can enter the course program at different stages depending on their previous sailing experience and the cost of the course will be pro-rated accordingly. Please consult us on this. Many fast track courses are run by different sailing schools in the Med. Some advertise courses that are only 10 weeks long and at very low prices. These are soft courses in the sunshine with little or no wind. Exams are almost always conducted under the same conditions. Our experience of these schools has been shabby yachts and poor quality tuition. At Irish Offshore Sailing we will train you to cope with challenging weather confidently using a modern offshore yacht with the most up to date navigational equipment. These yachts enter the Fastnet Race and Round Ireland Yacht Race every year, so they are extremely well equipped.

Our Commitment to You

At Irish Offshore Sailing we draw upon a team of expert instructors with over 10 years training students on the Professional Yachtmaster Scheme. We have put a course program together not just to get you to pass your Yachtmaster exam, but to make you into a competent confident professional skipper. We see time and time again within the industry, sailors barely meeting the grade and delivering yachts by the seats of their pants. Our aim is to train you to a standard where we would trust you to deliver our yachts in the dead of winter, and rest assured that the yacht will arrive in pristine condition. Students who train and sail in Ireland and the UK during the Winter and early Spring, experience strong winds, heavy swells and other difficult conditions. These difficult training grounds challenge and drive students to excel and ultimately produce a higher calibre of skipper. At Irish Offshore Sailing, we run a professional, well structured course designed to meet your needs. We operate from our course from our base at Dun Laoghaire Marina using our two Jeanneau Sunfast 37 foot yachts “Desert Star” and “Sherkin” and our classroom facilities at the Royal Irish Yacht Club. Dublin Bay provides and incredible training ground for our students with a large tidal range, shallow harbours, commercial shipping, and offshore winds which allow us to continue sailing even under heavy wind conditions. The protection of the outer harbour in Dun Laoghaire allows us to sail even in the most challenging of winds, when any other school would have to have a day in the classroom.

State Grants

Additional Gear and Advice

We strongly advise students to purchase their own sailing boots and gear before the commences. Contact us for advice on this. We don’t believe in flashy prospectuses to hook you in. We want to meet you for a coffee, or have a lengthy phone conversation, answer your questions, explain the course in great detail, learn about your background and your motivation for doing the course and assess your suitability for the course before your place is accepted. We monitor your progress very carefully during the course, and a high degree of self motivation, self learning and a good patient nature is required.

Previous Experience

While previous experience is not required before booking, but we do strongly advise that you attend at the very least a start yachting weekend or competent crew course before making a decision to book onto this intensive full time sailing course. The optimum is that each candidate would have around 500 miles of sailing experience prior to coming onto the sailing course. This means that you would have an understanding of what its like to sail a yacht offshore and at night before coming on the course. It also takes the pressure off  your attendance on the course, if you are sick for one week, then you may miss achieving your target mileage of 2,500 miles which is required to sit the Yachtmaster Offshore Exam, if you start the course with zero miles under your belt. We can advise you on how best to get these few days of training before the course begins when we meet for a coffee to show you the school and discuss the course.
