Although I have only been to a few yacht clubs this one is a great one. There is decent in the lit and street parking- only members with stickers park inside the gate. I come here on weekends and for Wednesday night racing- so if you're local and Saul this could be a fun time. There are always events occurring at this club and there are emails and other communications to keep members in the loop. Want to learn to sail? But don't have a boat? There are always Captains of boats who want extra crew and are willing to teach. The menu is affordable in the club but there are two places to eat- upstairs which is fancy and below for casual fare and not as strict a dress code. There is an outdoor dining area so you can bring your pouch. Be sure to say hi if you see me I can be found sailing in Loose Cannon - the sharp J105!

I don't even know who Broom Hilda could be... My wife and I are new HYC members and are enjoying ourselves immensely. Everyone on staff at the restaurant and lounge are friendly and very helpful and knowledgable. Sorry about your bad experience, Bruce. I see you are perfectly happy using our other facilities and other people's boats. I call people like you a barnacle, a parasite who causes trouble and is hard to get rid of... We members of the Hampton Yacht Club are like family. You have insulted my family. The HYC is FAR more than a restaurant. Membership is not expensive and you don't even have to own a boat. ( We do dock our 42' sailing yacht there, however.) The club owns three different types of sailboats that members can use. The Club also teaches sailing classes for the littlest sailors to senior adults. We sponsor races. We have cruising events. I urge others to investigate Hampton Yacht Club for themselves and make up your own minds.

I am from a fellow military yacht club in Newport RI I spent 7 rough hours at sea and contacted the club. I spoke with Susan one day prior to our arrival. Nice person. I discussed arriving and docking our boat as a recipication yacht club through Yacht Clubs of America. Granted I looked pretty beat up after being at sea but when I arrived I was treated as less of a person. More like some begger walking through the door. Manager Richard treated me with a high level.of disrespect as dis several.members as I passed by greeting them with a happy new year. They just turned their heads. I must have looked pretty bad. I am a dissabled Viet Nam Vet and had a hat on staying Viet Nam Vet. Maybe they dont like veterans. Strange because I believe the founder was military. The food did smell.great and I tried to compliment the kitchen staff about that I was walking to th he office. Like I said. I must have looked pretty bad at my age after being out at sea. Little did Richard then manager know that I am writing a crusing guide for 2021 about service and dining with a productions company. After how I was treated so terrible we never had dinner and left. As a matter of fact due to the poor degrenating treatment we departed and battled the rough seas across the channel and went to a much friendlier location on the Elizabeth River where we were treated with respect. I guess that they should learn not to judge a book by its cover. I was dressed nice but do have many facial scars from.war and did not have my hair combed nice and two days of facial hair. I will.never return to this uppity degenerating place to war veterans again. I will be happy to share th his experience with any media that reads this. I fought for this country and war has not made me pretty but those who look down to.me do not deserve my respect. This review is very factual!

I crew for sailboat races and have friends encouraging me to join. Never happen. The broom Hilda behind the bar is extremely rude to many people. I have eaten my last meal in there. I'll meet you at the boat. I can't imagine why people put up with her.

Wow great meal! We are reciprocal YC sailors stopping by on our way south. Decided to eat early at the restaurant since we were tired from our passage. Fortunately for us the special was a lobster dinner with clam chowder , veggies, sausage and dessert! Fantastic! Great service and YC ambiance was very nice.

In 1903, Hampton’s boating enthusiasts founded the Virginia Yacht Club and in 1906 issued stock and erected a clubhouse on pilings at the foot of Victoria Boulevard. Interest dwindled during the Great War and the clubhouse fell into disrepair. In 1926, six men, not associated with the Virginia Yacht Club, formed the Hampton Yacht Club (HYC) and were ceded gratis the property of the old club. Since that time, HYC has been a yachting and social center of the Virginia Peninsula.

The club got its start in 1907 as the Virginia Yacht Club, but it fell dormant because of World War I and then Prohibition, Shoemaker writes. What happened to revitalize it? A theft of liquor from boats moored next to it in about 1926, he says, drawing on George and Jane Webb’s book “The Best on the Bay.” One boat owner, he writes, “told his barber that what the area needed was a suitable yacht club where a gentleman could store his private property safe from the hands of thieves.”

“The History of the Hampton Yacht Club,” published through Palmetto Publishing, is the Williamsburg resident’s first book. His father, he says, was a charter member of the club, and died when Shoemaker was a child.
