Full Condition Surveys

For pre-purchase or insurance renewal

Before paying more than a deposit on a yacht you have the right to engage the services of a qualified surveyor.

 The yacht surveyor's job is to assess the condition of the yacht with particular attention being paid the condition of the hull structure. The written report will list the defects found during the survey with recommendations for repair. The report may be used to negotiate the final purchase arrangements.

Damage Surveys

After an accident or natural disaster

We are frequently commissioned to assess the cause, nature and extent of damages after an accident or natural disaster.

If required we provide specifications for repairing the vessel and supervise the work.

Tonnage Measurement

For yacht registration

Most flag states require a tonnage measurement certificate as part of the registration process. We conduct tonnage measurement surveys for the following registries.

Britain, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, British Virgin Isles, Barbados, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos and the Cayman Isles.

A vessel must be measured for length, breadth and depth before a formula is applied to obtain gross and net tonnage. 

Used for insurance, financial and legal purposes.

Valuations carried out by a qualified surveyor, are often required to obtain an insurance quotation or secure a mortgage on a vessel.  Valuations can also be used in legal matters such as probate settlements.

When preparing a valuation factors such as age, condition and location of a vessel are taken into consideration.

Project Management

During refit or repair

Frequently yacht owners are not satisfied with the refit or repair work that has been carried out to their vessels. Quite often the problem is poor communication between the various parties and a lack of supervision.

We offer a refit supervision service to ensure that work is carried out to the highest standards, vessels are delivered on time and within budget.

Testing under working conditions

Although sea trials often form part of a Full Condition Survey we are regularly commissioned to conduct  a sea trial after repairs or a refit. 

A sea trial is the only real way to test systems and equipment under working conditions.

It is easier for us to use a Spannish company but we are concerned that, as these surveys are an annual thing for Spannish registered yachts we may get caught up in some Spannish marine regulation matters. Also will the Spannish surveyor really understand what the insurance survey is for and produce an appropriate survey. Has anyone experience in this matter? The chap I used may have retired, as he is not there, but friends have used Ed Geary. My Gib-based surveyor report (from [email protected] ) was accepted by my insurers.   We're in Empuriabrava and our 10 year survey is coming up soon. There are two British surveyors in Barcelona, Roland Perry and David Dabney. Roland Perry quoted €1190 inc TVA and David Dabney quoted €775 inc. The latter did my initial pre purchase survey and, although I thought his recommendations were a little OTT at the time, €315 is €315! I would certainly investigate using a Spanish surveyor that has good English and insurance/qualifications to satisfy your insurer.   Or change insurer. When I was with GJW they asked for a survey and I politely declined, offering a ream of documents in support of ongoing maintenance. I'm in the process of buying a boat there and the insurance co have asked for a survey.... n   16 Aug 2020 When I sold my boat in Barcelona the UK purchasers had a survey by an experienced UK surveyor.. worked out cheaper than the English ones available locally even with flying him in and out. A previous UK potential buyer had used a local English surveyor who produced a report that was factually incorrect in places and was very much 'jobs worth' rather than an impartial report....
