Offshore powerboat association releases 2023 schedule.

Offshore Powerboat Association has released its 2023 schedule that includes nine stops starting with the LOTO Powerfest in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., in June.

The June 1-3 race in Lake of the Ozarks has formerly Lake Race and will be held at Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake at the 7-mile marker. The offshore tour heads to Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey for the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix (June 9-11) and then to Eastlake, Ohio, for the Eastlake Grand Prix (July 14-16).

Two weeks later, the boats head to St. Clair, Mich., for the St. Clair Classic (July 28-30). OPA’s August races include the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind. (August 3-6) and the Ocean City Grand Prix in Maryland (August 18-20)

Leading up to the Offshore Powerboat Association National Championships at the Pompano Beach Powerfest in Pompano Beach, Fla., on October 6-8, is the Crystal Coast Grand Prix in Morehead, South Carolina (September 8-10).

The OPA World Championships are slated for November 16-19 in Englewood, Florida, at the Englewood Beach Waterfest.

OPA classes include Super Cat, Factory Stock, Super Stock, Vee Extreme, Modified Vee, Stock Vee and various bracket racing classes.

It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.

Powerboat P1 has today announced the UIM Class 1 World Championship race calendar for the 2023 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin for the first time and returning to favourite locations in Florida and Indiana. A fleet of eight Class 1 boats is expected to compete in the six-venue championship from May through to September.

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement that includes organisational and promotion rights to the world championship. However, with the pandemic seriously impacting the 2021 season by preventing overseas teams from traveling to the United States, it wasn’t until this year that P1 was able to action its plans to attract more race teams and grow the series through social media and building the worldwide television audience.

Racing will kick off at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast in late May, before moving to the Gulf Coast at the end of June when the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will celebrate its 38 th  anniversary. In August the series will head north to Indiana for the Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix, and a new event in the Wisconsin city of Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan will host the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge.

Featuring the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including Class 1, the three-day festival is expected to attract more than thirty teams to race along the Sheboygan waterfront. In early September the Class 1 fleet will be back on the Gulf Coast in St. Petersburg, and P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala is in advanced discussions to stage a season finale in Miami. “We raced in this iconic city in 2018 and returning this year with the Class 1 boats would create an outstanding climax to the 2023 championship,” said Rangoonwala.

“As we look ahead to the 2023 season, I can confirm that both the M CON Racing Team and Sudrheim Offshore Racing will be joining the series to give us an international field of eight boats with teams representing Australia, Sweden, Norway and, of course, the United States,” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “The M CON team will compete in a fully branded Monster Energy boat. This new canopied Skater 438 catamaran is the first purpose-built Class 1 boat for more than a decade. With Sudrheim Racing flying the flag for Norway next year, we can look forward to another Scandinavian team battling for the world title.”

This season’s championship will build towards an international race calendar in 2024 with host venues in Scandinavia and the Middle East being added to the schedule. In five years’ time, the key goal in P1’s development plan is to have twelve Class 1 teams racing at ten international venues. “Our live streaming this season will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of a new timing system which will show boat positions, distances between boats, speeds and lap times as live graphics,” explained Rangoonwala.

“We’re on an exciting journey and our mantra is to take UIM Class 1 back to the pinnacle of offshore racing,”

added Rangoonwala.

Everything you Need to Know about the Key West Powerboat Races 2023

Offshore powerboat racing is regarded as one of the most spectacular and exciting sports in the world, easily rivaling events like the Daytona 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and the Indianapolis 500. Become part of the ultimate adrenaline rush when the highly competitive races return to Key West once again this November. Here’s everything you need to know about the Key West Offshore World Championship Powerboat Races in 2023 (we answer some frequently asked questions too!).

When are the Key West Powerboat World Championships?

The entire event will take place over eight days on Key West’s waterfront, Nov. 5 - 12, 2023, with the races being held on Wednesday, Nov. 8 (Truman Waterfront Cup), Friday, Nov. 10 (Southernmost Continental Championship), and Sunday, Nov. 12 (Conch Republic Championship). See the schedule below for dates and times.

Where are the Powerboat World Championships in Key West?

The races will take place near Truman Waterfront Park, which is located at the end of Southard Street on Key West’s western shore.

How do you get to Truman Waterfront Park?

Guests of The Gates Hotel can hop on the air-conditioned shuttle to the Key West Historic Seaport (just show the shuttle driver your room key!). Once in Old Town, catch a cab or ridesharing service to Truman Waterfront Park or take the 15-minute walk by trekking south on William Street and taking a right on Southard Street. The park is located at the end of the traffic circle.

What should you bring to the Key West Powerboat World Championships?

Enhance your time at the races by bringing a comfortable folding chair or blanket and a beach umbrella to help shade you from the sun. Sunglasses and sunscreen are helpful too! Food and beverage vendors will be set up along the Outer Mole.

Where are the Best Places to Watch the Boat Races in Key West?

General admission to the races will be sold on-site at Truman Waterfront Park ($25 for a single day pass, $53 for a three-day pass; kids 12 and under, military, and veterans are free). Best Events at the Key West Powerboat Races (Besides the Races)

See the opening ceremony before the festivities begin and the awards and closing ceremonies at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater at Truman Waterfront. Notable events also include nightly racer’s parties at local bars, the World’s Fastest Boat Parade down Duval Street, and the 4th annual Build-A-Boat contest , where teams of 4 - 12 build a boat from scratch with materials provided. Cliff Cody, Key West Kings, Sam Carlson, and Wolf Love Band are set to take the stage at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater for ‘Boats and Boots’ on Saturday.

All in from Long Offshore race at 2023 ORC European Championship

Ta’Xbiex, Malta – From the late morning start yesterday of the Long Offshore race, the fleet of 37 entries from 11 nations experienced a wide diversity of conditions in this suitable test of skills to open the 2023 ORC European Championship , hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club . Elapsed times ranged from 19:41:46 for the Class A winner, Karl Kwok’s (HKG) TP 52 BEAU GESTE who raced 186 miles, to George Greer’s Arcona 380 KIBOKO TATU whose team from Sweden raced 151 miles in Class B for almost 29 hours.

Results are expressed in corrected time using the ORC PCS All-Purpose scoring model, and for Class A BEAU GESTE was the clear winner over runner-up Claudio Terrieri’s (ITA) Swan 45 BLUE SKY by over 2.5 hours. In third place in Class A was Malta-based ELUSIVE II , a modified First 45 owned by Maya and Christoph Podesta.

"We got lucky in being fast enough to avoid some of the transition holes in the wind that our slower rivals felt,” said BEAU GESTE tactician Gavin Brady . “We like the ORC system because its fair for all boats, which means we have to race hard to not lose to the others in corrected time. We also had a conservative approach to not push too hard to break anything because as Peter Blake said, you have to finish to win. We had every possible condition: light air, heavy air, flat seas and very choppy seas. It tested all our skills.”

The first to finish on the 151-mile course in Class B was Renzo Grottesi’s (ITA) Club Swan 42 BE WILD , less than 13 minutes ahead of the 2022 Class B Worlds Bronze medalist team from Estonia, Aivar Tuulberg’s  KATARIINA II , which is also a Club Swan 42. BE WILD tactician Enrico Zennaro gave credit to the full-race focus of his team and some clever moves made between the old and new winds at the northern turning mark at Rugosa. This focus launched them into the lead for the last half of the race.

Yet both Swans fell to Marcin Sutkowski’s  (POL) Grand Soleil 44 P WINDWHISPER 44 (shown right) who won in corrected time by 30 minutes over BE WILD.

In Class C the fleet sailed a shorter 140-mile course and finished ahead of most of the Class A and Class B boats, with Vincenzo De Blasio’s (ITA) Italia 11.98 SCUGNIZZA taking the win in both elapsed and corrected time. Ott Kikkas’s (EST) Class C reigning World Champion Italia 11.98 SUGAR 3 was less than 8 minutes behind, while in third place was Jakoubek Zdenek’s (CZE) M37 HEBE V .

“I think this was the most beautiful race we have ever done,” said a tired but ebullient Zdenek . "Because the weather was perfect, the boat was perfect, so we are so happy we have finished this race because it will stay in our memory for a long time. We really enjoyed being at sea under the stars, and always enjoy visiting Malta. This was I think a good race for us to start the championship against some very tough competition.”
