Anyone viewing the pleasingly modern lines of a Tartan 37 would find it hard to believe the first production model hit the market in 1976. Remarkably, Charlie Britton, along with a very talented Sparkman & Stephens design team, effectively incorporated many features important to offshore cruising and racing in a 37-foot hull. The only thing that hints at her age is the trademark plaid-upholstered interior.

Sailing performance and quality construction in an aesthetically pleasing package have been keys to Tartan’s success as a builder. The 37 has been the most popular choice for a variety of practical reasons.

The hull is hand-laid and molded as a single unit. It is cored with end-grain balsa, tapered to solid glass in any high-stress areas (engine bed, mast step, shroud terminals, thru-hulls and keel sections). The deck is of the same construction with excellent molded-in non-skid on all flat surfaces; it is joined to the hull with a bedded, mechanically fastened lap joint that has proven to be strong and dry.

The underbody features a skeg-hung rudder, cutaway forefoot and long fin keel (Tartan did offer the 37 with a deep fin of 6’7″ draft, a Scheel keel of 4’7″ draft, and a centerboard of 4’2″ up, 7’9″ down). Two rigs were offered — a standard rig giving bridge clearance of 52’0″ and a so-called “tall” rig at 53’8″ — supported by standard 1×19 stainless steel wire rigging. With sail area of 625 square feet driving a decidedly efficient hull, the Tartan 37 was capable of competitive racing as well as impressive, comfortable 24-hour runs. As with almost any S&S design, the rudder is efficient and the hull tracks well on all points of sail.

Performance sailing to weather is excellent and the cockpit remains fairly dry, but a good dodger mounted on the molded coaming that surrounds the cockpit and extends just aft of the mid-boom traveler is a must for added shelter. Offwind performance ranks up there with the best of them. Plenty of rudder contributes to great control in full-sail reaching or running situations.

The interior is traditional but larger than you would expect with 11’9″ of beam. It features lots of teak veneer and trim with teak-battened, white Formica overhead. An insert makes the V-berth an acceptable dockside double. The head forward with sink includes a shower spigot; the arrangement is tight but functional. The starboard, main-cabin settee works well as a sea berth, and the port settee converts to a double. The double quarterberth aft is a perk you don’t usually find in a boat this size. A great galley is to starboard and a nav station to port, just at the base of the companionway.

Most 37s are powered by the 32-hp Universal 40, although the Universal 50 was originally offered as an option. Even on the early models, the engine hours tend to be low — a testament to the boat’s sailing abilities. The standard 47-gallon fuel tank provides enough range for coastal or inshore motoring.

The Tartan 37 has held its value well. Early ones (1976-1981) list and sell in the low to mid $50,000 range; newer ones (1982-1988) in the $60,000 to $90,000 range. Price differences relate to condition, equipment or year manufactured. A $50,000 to $60,000 early Tartan 37 with little in the way of equipment (or with electronics still needing an upgrade) represents good value and may even appreciate slightly, depending on treatment given and additional gear added.

When considering buying an older boat, one axiom should be held sacred: Buy a good, capable boat, one that’s proven and reliable. The Tartan 37 is one vessel that more than fits the bill.

08 january 2014, boat review: tartan 37.

  • Small head forward, no separate shower
  • Starboard settee in main cabin can function as a sea berth
  • Port settee converts to a double
  • Drop-down table
  • Galley to starboard
  • Nav station to port at base of the companionway
  • Double quarterberth aft
  • Tartan 37s were built before vinylester hit the scene and use a polyester resin which might make them more vulnerable to osmotic blistering.
  • The use of balsa wood coring means you need to check for possible delamination.
  • As discussed above, the unusual method of attaching the deck to the hull means could cause problems with stripping the threading on the steel plates.
  • The pulpit fasteners lack backing plates.
  • The scuppers and bilge pump outlets don’t have any shutoffs.
  • The fold-down table can be flimsy which isn’t great when you’re underway.

I'm a bit partial to the T37 as we own one, but I have to say that it's a great boat. Sail one if you get a chance. As a note, my wife picked her out of a long line of contenders we looked at.

tartan 37 sailboat data

Thanks for the feedback Richard - I'm quite interested in checking the T37 out further. It is good to know that you guys are enjoying yours!

Have you considered a Sabre 36 or 38?

Yes, they are on the very long list of boats we have to consider. There are so many choices and options that it is pretty overwhelming at times! Do you have a Sabre? If so, how do you find her?

My husband got an old sailboat from a friend and we are trying to figure out what it is. His friend was a fellow disabled veteran and was unsure about the make of the boat. But we have already received several offers from passersby. It has made me curious about the worth of such boats. I had no idea older ones could go for so much. If there are only 500 Tartan, I can certain understand its value.

That's great that you've already had offers from passerbys! Boat prices vary so much even for the same model - it depends on so many factors, condition, equipment, location, how motivated the seller is etc. All the best with your boat!

We LOVE when people leave comments. It's so much more fun hearing what you have to say. If you have a blog, make sure you leave a link and I'll be sure to pop on by.

Tartan 37 History

Specifications

Tartan 37 Book

The first few hulls out of the mold were built as the racing version or Tartan 38, with a deep fin keel and tall rig. The racing success for these boats was not as good as Charlie Britton had desired, but the cruising aspects of the boat were very marketable. The line continued and all boats were produced as the Tartan 37 with standard rig, whether they had the deep keel or the keel/centerboard. Some later boats were produced upon order in the fin keel or keel/centerboard configuration, but with the tall rig.

Of the 486 hulls produced, approximately 10% were thought to be deep keel boats, with most of the remainder keel/centerboard models. This feature makes the Tartan 37 ideal for areas with a lot of "thin water" such as Southwest Florida or the Chesapeake Bay.  A few of the last hulls to be produced were fitted with a Scheel keel.

The Tartan 37 has done well in club races and larger events. Steve Pettengill sailed a deep-fin Tartan 37, Ambergris, to a class record in the Port Huron - Mackinac race on Lake Huron. Many Tartan 37s take part in offshore events such as the Marion/Bermuda race and the Marblehead/Halifax race.

The excellent sailing manners, pleasing lines and rich interior joinerwork of the T37 have become Tartan trademarks. The current line of Tartans being built by Novis Marine still bear much of the look of the T37, and carry on the quality and performance the Tartan name has come to signify.

There are many other Tartan classics to choose from. Earlier and later S&S Tartans and the later designs by Tim Jackett, such as the Tartan 372, Tartan 3800 and Tartan 3700, all exemplify the Tartan reputation, which is founded in solid, seaworthy boats with good speed and a fine finish.

Tartan 37 Used Boat Review

Posted April 5, 2017

tartan 37 sailboat data

I once heard an expression that "a camel is a horse designed by committee." I recognize there are those who will argue the beauty and functional form of the camel. However, there is another case, evidenced by the collaborative efforts of designer Sparkman & Stevens and boat builder Tartan Marine, for a design "committee" approach that produced a thoroughbred, not a camel.

All the more remarkable is that the final design of any production boat is the result of many compromises. In meeting the needs of the designer, production, sales, marketing, and financial managers, the "compromises" resulted in one of today’s classic cruising yachts with the debut in 1976 of the Tartan 37. Between 1976 and 1988 more than 450 of these popular yachts were built.

This was not the first team effort of this designer and builder. Their history of successful projects dates back to 1961 with the Tartan 27. Undoubtedly, this long period of working together, as well as having a thorough understanding of one another’s goals, was a great asset when it came to working on the Tartan 37 project.

For 20 years now the Tartan 37 has maintained a reputation as a soundly constructed, nicely finished, well-mannered, and moderately priced yacht-- a reputation it deserves on each count.

Construction of the Tartan 37 utilizes balsa wood core material in both the hull and decks. This provides strength and rigidity and results in a relatively light but strong structure. Secondary bonding and filleting of structural members to the hull of the Tartan 37 is some of the best that will be found in any production built boat and it is rare to find any structural problems with these boats, even in those that are nearly 20 years old.

Tartan used a somewhat unconventional method of hull-to-deck attachment. An aluminum plate was fiberglassed under an inward hull flange at the shear. The deck is placed on top over sealant, and a teak toe rail added on top. Holes are drilled through this "sandwich," and the aluminum plate is tapped to accept fasteners. The toe rail and deck are then fastened to the flange with stainless steel machine screws on approximately 8" centers. I have always had some concerns that normal flexing of the boat would strip the threads on the aluminum plate and cause loss of strength at the hull-to-deck joint. I must admit though, I have not seen any significant signs of deck failure, and my concerns may prove unfounded.

On the interior, the joiner and finish work on this boat is first rate. However, I have heard an occasional remark about the dark interior teak woodwork and somber colored upholstery fabrics.

For performance, no one should expect a shoal draft centerboard design to perform at the level of a Grand Prix racer. The Tartan 37 is a cruising boat and generally, makes no pretense to be anything else. That’s not to say she has not won a race now and then. Steve Pettingill set a record in the Port Huron to Mackinac Island Single-handed Race in his Tartan 37,  Ambergris , a fin-keel Tartan 37 which draws well over 6’. The majority of the 37s built were centerboard, shoal draft designs drawing just 4’-2" with the board up. This is nearly the perfect draft for a boat of this size intended for cruising the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries.

Displacement of the Tartan 37 is 15,500 pounds and her displacement/length ratio is 220. For comparison, I searched my design database for keel/centerboard designs between 37 and 38 feet and found eight matches. On average, their displacement was 17,255 lbs with a displacement/length ratio of 294. By this comparison, you might say the Tartan 37 is a light boat and worry if she is unusually tender. But, on the other hand, the ballast/displacement ratio of the Tartan 37 is 48% compared to an average 38%, and the sail area/displacement ratio is 16.1 compared to an average 16.7.

By any standard of performance comparisons for a boat of this class, the Tartan 37 is anything but disappointing. She is quite stable, with windward and downwind sailing performance that is certainly acceptable. When reaching, as would be predicted, this boat excels. Prices of used Tartan 37s put them in the moderate price range, but generally they are very good values. Quality construction, excellent reputation and loyal owners tend to maintain their value, and demand for well-maintained used boats is generally high. Will Rogers said he never met a man he didn’t like. Well, I’ve never met a Tartan 37 owner who didn’t love his boat. It’s a testimonial that’s hard to beat!

Tartan 37'? Pros/cons

  • Add to quote

I visited this boat yesterday: 1979 Tartan 37 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com My basic impression is that I should move forward and make an offer. However, I have a rule that I take a few days to think about big purchases, because otherwise I have a tendency to make poor decisions before I've had time to consider them. In general, I'm looking for any thoughts, good or bad; on this boat as a purchase; any experience by Tartan owners regarding anything I should focus on inspecting or ask about; whether the asking price seems fair ... any input at all. For background for anyone who hasn't seen my previous posts: This is my first Yacht-sized boat (I currently own a 16' sloop that I sail on a local lake) I took my ASA 104 last fall, and I've spent a little time on friend's boats in southern FL. My plan is to sail this boat around the great lakes (primarily Erie) for a few seasons to get some experience, find out what I'd like to customize on the boat, etc. Then put it in the ocean and become a full-time livaboard. I'm a computer programmer, so I'm _hoping_ I can structure work to allow me to make long trips (essentially doing contract jobs where I can do the project, then hand in the completed work next time I'm near Internet access) I'll be alone and my travelling preferences will tend toward less crowded locations.

Always liked the T37. Classic S&S design and built by Tartan when they were at the peak of their game. Price seems reasonable considering you are on the lakes so this should be a fresh water boat that has been hauled every winter. Everything depends on the survey of course, but from pics this is a clean boat. Good luck.

I looked long and hard at a T37 a few years ago, and came within days of making a serious offer on one. The only reason I didn’t was b/c my current boat (Rafiki-37) became available. But I really liked the T37, and they have good reputations as quality boats that can go just about anywhere. The ad looks good, and the price seems right. This is a good boat for the skinny waters of L. Erie, but many have also crossed the Big Blue. Seems like a good choice (assuming she’s in descent shape).

If the boat checks out, I don't see how you could go wrong. Might need new standing rigging... That boat will hold its value and always be in demand.

I suggest the Tartan 37 forum... lots of great info. Tartan37.com • Index page

I would add that the boat looks in great shape and if the previous owner has done some nice upgrades one being the traveler that looks like the same one I installed from garhauer. Also appears he's putting new instruments in and you will probably enjoy the davits, I have them as well. There are certainly things to check out as there would be on any boat but otherwise you shouldn't find anything serious. They're solid boats sale well not super fast but will do six seven knots in a nice breeze pretty good for light wind sailing as it's a fairly light boat for its size I believe. You might want to check for some soft spots in the deck it that time of build Tartan was not doing solid fiberglass for factory installed deck. If I had one complaint it would be that as a live-aboard the heads a little small but I also understand that it was built that way on purpose so it's nothing really against the boat.

According to soldboats.com the average sale price of the nineteen 79' Tartan 37's that have been sold since January 2013 is $40,897.22US. The lowest was $12k, a few in the low 20's, the three highest in the low $50's and most in the high $20's to high $30's. The high priced ones had significant equipment like new engines, new ports, new chain plates, new propane stoves, refrigeration etc.

There are always a lot of T37s available as they were very popular. Saw plenty of them in the South Pacific and the owners were happy with their offshore performance and board up draft when needed. Decks are prone to water intrusion and chainplates would be suspect if they are original. With so many on the market I would only focus on those with newer sails and low hour engines. This one fits that bill. Sent from my Pixel C using Tapatalk

Hey, I have always liked Tartan boats and came close to buying one a few times. The only thing that stopped me was I decided I wanted something a little more 'racy'. Anyway, that boat looks nice. The price seems high to me but I don't really follow that market. Here is the only thing that sort of concerns me: Sails & Rigging 10 year old dacron mainsail with Navy Blue sail cover and Lazy Jacks, 10 year old dacron 135% furling genoa with Navy Blue U.V. protection, 2008 Harken furling system, Keel stepped mast with single spreaders, S.S. wire standing rigging, 2014 Garhauer traveler, Lewmar #44 self-tailing primary sheet winches, 2-cabin top mounted mainsheet and halyard winches, Inboard and outboard genoa lead tracks. Sorry, but 10 year old Dacron sails are worn out. So I would look for a deduction in price, OR I would just accept that the boat really does need new sails and budget for it. Maybe not for year 1 but it would be in your best interest to get new sails. Maybe buy a new headsail next year and new main the year after that? Just my $.02. Good luck, Barry

10 year old sails on a great lakes boat have 5 years of use though. And none of the serious UV damage of the South.

Check the keel bolts carefully. I have seen two that had seriously corroded bolts, one of which the keel fell off. It may be coincidence, or it may be a more common problem on these boats, I do not know. But do check them carefully.

What keel bolts? The keel encapsulated in fiberglass you're just regurgitated internet jargon from a 3700

Great boats. I would buy the S&S design in a heartbeat and almost did when I purchased Haleakula. At the time it came down to a choice between a T37, a Sabre 36, and our C$C 35 MKIII. The C&C won because it was in the best condition and at the time speed and angle of close haulsailing was important to me. The T37 had classic lines, Tartans before the started vacuum bagging are super well made. I still like the T40. Tartan owners also tend to move up As discussed like any older boat there are things to examine. I also add the the Older Westerbekes may need replacement. You can't go wrong with this boat in good condition

Listing prices range from $80k to $20k.... 1975 Tartan (Sail) Boats For Sale

Interesting that both the cheapest and most expensive ones are right in my neighborhood. Actually that $21K boat doesn't look bad. I wonder what's wrong with it.

I believe the one listed at $80k includes a one-on-one, two week, naked sailing lesson in the BVI's with the current owner, Jennifer Lopez :captain:

Tartan 37 (Hood)

Tartan 37 (Hood) is a 37 ′ 0 ″ / 11.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Ted Hood and built by Tartan Yachts starting in 1965.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Nearly the same as the earlier BLACK WATCH 37, but with all glass coach roof instead of wood, for easier maintenance. Available also as a keel-centerboarder (Draft: BD:9.33’/2.84m BU: 3.83’/1.17m) Sloop or yawl. The HOOD 37, built by Little Harbor Yachts, is said to be based on the same design. Not to be confused with the S&S designed, TARTAN 37-2, introduced in 1976. See BLACK WATCH 37 for more details.
