First look: Pointer 30 – stylish 30 footer

The Pointer 30 may not be the perfect boat for long passage making, but for a weekend with friends she fits the bill and does so with syle

Product Overview

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

Starting below deck then, the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart). Next to the work station is a drawer fridge that faces the simple galley. There’s a settee berth to starboard, facing the coffee bar, and a heads forward on the port side. The heads door serves a dual purpose as the door to the forward cabin and its double V-berth; one or other can be closed but not both.

Stowage is limited to bins beneath the bunk, and a simple but effective pull-out felt basket. Additional stowage comes from Pointer’s system of canvas pockets attached to parallel wires the length of the boat, so more can be added, moved, or changed – another simple and clever idea.

On deck, long, low lines with an elegantly subtle sheer, low coachroof, plumb ends and modestly soft chines aft make this boat very easy on the eye. Add in a displacement of under 2.5 tonnes, of which 41% is in the keel and a long waterline and you’ve got a boat with potential for some fast and weatherly sailing. She’s designed for the sheltered, shoal waters of the Dutch inland seas with a draught of just 1.25m, and is CE rated B for coastal waters so should be well suited to the UK’s tidal cruising grounds.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Her cockpit is large, capable of seating up to eight, both forward and aft of the wheel. This has a clever tilting wheel using the Jefa steering pedestal to tilt from one side to the other. Depress a foot pedal, and you can cant the wheel to port or starboard, or lock it amidships, allowing you to helm standing, or sitting on either side. The system seemed to work well ashore.

Halyards are led aft to two coachroof winches, and sheets come back to coaming-top winches, all from Harken. One neat little touch are the moulded rope bins outboard of the aft end of the coachroof.

While this isn’t a boat you’d head off long-distance cruising in, she has everything you need for a comfortable weekend on board, and overnight with friends, or something longer for a couple or small family, and the Pointer 30 would do so in a lot of style.

Pointer 30: An elegant Dutch-style sailboat, full of tricks

Discovered at the Boot Düsseldorf 2023, the new Pointer 30 has what it takes to seduce lovers of pretty sailing boats, for a comfortable and efficient ride. The Heeg shipyard has incorporated many clever features, both on deck and in the cabin.

A classically elegant sailboat

We know the Dutch taste for sailing. Their numerous inland waterways allow pleasant day trips or trips for a few days. The Heeg shipyard responds to this program with a classic and comfortable elegance, thanks to its new Pointer 30. The shipyard uses for this range of dayboats and small cruisers , launched in 2012, its know-how acquired since 1950.

The Pointer 30, with its 9.20 meters long and 2.90 meters wide, has balanced and classic lines. A discreet roof, combined with a straight bow and a measured freeboard, are seductive. With 48 m2 upwind and 68 m2 of gennaker, the Pointer 30 should offer the necessary power for pleasant sailing on all types of water with only 1.25 meters of draft.

A comfortable cockpit to enjoy while sailing and at anchor

The architects have designed a cockpit with two long benches that can accommodate up to 8 people. One will be able to enjoy the anchorage during the summer, well leaning on cushions, held to the coaming thanks to a magnet.

When sailing, you can lean on the back of the roof comfortably, without being bothered by the electronics, cleverly integrated in a recess. The halyards are not in the way when sailing.

On the helmsman's side, Heeg has chosen a tilting wheel steering system. The helmsman can position himself or herself to rappel, to center or to heel depending on the wind strength, by pressing a simple pedal. At anchor , the helm is tilted to one side, freeing the circulation towards the bathing platform.

A cabin with a hushed atmosphere

Once past the few steps of the descent, one discovers a cosy interior where the shipyard has taken care of the details. Heeg is able to propose some customizations. In the visited specimen, one finds 2 coffin berths under the cockpit and a front cabin in the point, with its toilet and WC.

It is in the saloon that the originality lies. On the port side, the shipyard has installed two real comfortable leather armchairs. Rotating on their legs, they can be used face to face around a small table, or as a lounge complement facing the starboard bench. Finally, the front armchair, turned towards the bow, will be used as a seat in front of the generous desk-cum-chart table.

We note the care taken in the finishing of the saddlery and woodwork. Felt baskets in the trunks allow to store the material, while absorbing noises and vibrations. Pockets suspended on a cable are used as equipment and can be fixed according to the time of the day in the cabin or on a wire outside.

A beautiful high-end unit

This sailboat is offered in two versions, electric or thermal, with a choice of a 6 kW Torqeedo pod or a 15 or 20 horsepower Yanmar engine.

The base price is 154,000 euros.

Pointer 30 : New interior for the all-rounder from Holland

The boat builders in Friesland are clearly responding to customer requests. The new version (Lounge version) now has two symmetrical sofa berths to the side of the saloon, plus a double berth in the foredeck, which can be separated from the saloon with a bulkhead if required. The wet room is now located aft, to the side of the companionway, and the shipyard also offers a galley module. The two dog bunks at the rear, as in the original version, have been omitted from the new ship; instead, very large forecastle boxes are available.

The first visualisations of the new interior fittings can be seen in the picture gallery above. However, Jachtwerf Heeg intends to continue to offer the previous layout with the two comfortable swivel armchairs in the saloon, the forward wet room and the two dog berths aft as an option (Exclusive version).

The extremely versatile Pointer 30 scored highly in the YACHT test under sail. The relatively slim and lightweight nine-metre boat designed by Peter Bosgraaf sailed very lively and manoeuvrable in light winds with a surprisingly good, high performance potential. The smart Dutchwoman can be steered either with a tiller or a swivelling steering column. The handling is also impeccable.

Almost ten years ago, shipyard boss Geert Wijma started the crossover project Pointer 25 launched the new brand and shortly afterwards added the trailerable Pointer 22 supplemented. With the new 30, the company completed the logical and expected upward expansion of the line last year. The universal concept is suitable for touring with the family as well as a simple daysailer or weekender for short sailing fun in between. But the Pointer 30 also offers regatta sailors a good platform with potential. The yacht was also immediately nominated for the European Yacht of the Year 2024. Prices for the Pointer 30 currently start at 152,340 euros gross.

SAFE WHEN THINGS GET ROUGH

Safety is baked into all POINTER designs and the 30 is no different. With bags of buoyancy and a high ballast ratio no wonder the POINTER 30 complies with CE category B (offshore) rating. We found the yacht to be impecably behaved, finger tip steering, even in the strongest of gusts. As standard the POINTER 30 is equipped with a safe closed transom which converts to a swimming or recovery platform. Whether choosing the standard shallow draft 1.25m or optional 1.75 m keel the POINTER 30 boasts a high ballast ratio, whatever keel options suit your sailing area.

A YACHT WHICH DARES TO BE DIFFERENT BELOW DECK

The cabin boasts a stylish interior with an innovative bar with rotating armchairs for optimal comfort and floor space. The well-thought-out design and efficient layout make this a versatile cabin cruiser. In the bow the POINTER 30 has a separate double cabin with v-berth offering decent stretching room (2.1m). Cleverly positioned adjoining the forward cabin sits the heads compartment with the galley opposite. The First 30 is 10.33 metres long and has a displacement of 3,150 kg, meaning that even small crews can enjoy quick easy planing .

You feel the thrill of the boat accelerating, and every manoeuvre is smoother and more responsive.
