How Do I Pick the Best Marine Vinyl?

This is a popular question so we answered it in a long blog post. You can check out the full post here --> How to find the best marine vinyl for your project

How Wide is Marine Vinyl?

Marine Vinyl is a standard 54" wide (See Length Guide)

What is the difference between regular vinyl and marine vinyl?

Marine vinyl has special additives added to the vinyl while it's being made. Marine Vinyl protects the material from harsh elements like UV rays, Mold and Mildew, Cold Temperatures and salt water.

How to Clean Marine Vinyl?

This is not a simple question so we wrote a blog post that goes over this topic in great detail. It will give you some awesome tips. Check the article out --> How to clean your marine vinyl?

Keeping your vinyl clean and out of the sun will extend the life of the material. Our material is UV treated, but over an extended period the sun will break down the material. They make boat and furniture covers for a reason and it's because the harsh sun will break down just about anything. You can also use products like 303 and Meguiars Marine Vinyl Cleaners.

How do I get creases out of the folded vinyl?

Lay the marine vinyl flat on the ground in the sun. You can also use a heat gun to smooth it out. You can also use a heating pad or heated blanket on a low setting. The material will always bounce back to its original shape, but it can take time. Smaller pieces can be placed in a drier on a low setting to help smooth it out. Please be careful not to use so much heat where it melts.

Why is the Marine Vinyl UV rating only 500 hours?

This is a standard test length. Most of our products can very easily exceed this length of time. There are a few colors that will fade at a slightly faster speed (red, orange and neon pink - 250 hours). The other colors can easily achieve 500+ hours. Please note to extend the life of any marine vinyl we recommend covering the material when it's not in use. They make boat covers and furniture covers for a reason.

Is Marine Vinyl Waterproof?

Marine Vinyl is made with a PVC top layer and a knit polyester backing. The vinyl itself is waterproof, but if you sew it together water can get through seams.

What is the backing made of?

It has a white knit polyester backing. Most people love our backing because when it's cut it doesn't fray like many other brands. It also helps provide a lot of strength and durability.

What is the texture?

The majority of Flexa marine vinyl has a mild leather texture. The carbon fiber does has a different carbon fiber appearance/texture. The Armadillo texture has larger more pronounced lines and reminds us more of an armadillo shell hence the name. The texture on Modern has straighter lines.

Will my product come in one piece?

If you order less than 30 yards the order should come in one continuous piece. We do our best to send rolls in one piece, but occasionally our team may accidently send out a split roll. If you order a 30 yard roll it may contain up to 1 factory split. If you need the material not to have a split please let us know before the order is filled.

Will the marine vinyl come in one continuous piece?

When you order "By The Yard" the majority of the time it is shipped in one continuous piece. Occasionally rolls will have splits in the vinyl where the vinyl is taped together. This is an area where the backing had to be switched while being made. We do our best to avoid sending this out, but full rolls and larger orders may include splits. Please let us know in the order comments or call us to let us know that you cannot have a split in your roll to complete your project. We will do our best to accommodate these requests but cannot make any promises.

How Much Marine Vinyl Do I Need To Order?

Many people wish there was a magic formula to know exactly how much they need. Unfortunately there is not a magic formula. The best way is to measure the existing material. Be sure to measure the surface as well as the sides and be sure to give yourself a little extra to wrap it around the bottom.

Should we order a little extra marine vinyl?

If you feel like your measurements are accurate you do not need to order extra, but most people like to add a little extra just in case.

How do I order Marine Vinyl?

Simply select the color you need. This item is sold by the running linear yard. A linear yard of marine vinyl is 36" long, but the width will always be 54" wide. For example 2 linear yards would be 72" long by 54" wide. In the space labeled "Quantity" enter the number of yards desired. Lengths are sold as continuous yards in one piece. If you need help figuring out how much material you need feel free to call our experts at 312-300-6737 or email us at [email protected].

Great headliner material

This is the best headliner material that I have ever used. It has stretch in both directions. Looks great in the 1972 Marcos and matches the new vinyl upholstery perfectly.

Not bad but had seams in it

Material was great fast delivery however I had to use 10ft sectionsfor the project. for some reason had 2 seems in the roll... I had to throw a couple pieces out cause they weren't long enough however the product was awesome just beware of seams order extra I was just short from what I needed to finish my project. I would order again though

Wallcoverings for vessel interiors

sailboat vinyl headliner

By Terri Madden and Alayna Wool

Wall panels and headliners make a statement when entering the saloon of a yacht. Much like the color or texture of the walls of your home, wall panels and headliners are items that cannot be overlooked—especially when they start to sag and age. Fresh wall panels truly enhance the overall appearance of any interior, quickly giving a vessel’s cabin an updated look.

Wall panels offer a visual focal point as well as acoustic tranquility to cabin interiors. The latest vertical and horizontal offerings from a variety of manufacturers are often showcased at international boat shows throughout the year.

Material considerations

A pliable vinyl upholstery fabric with the look and feel of real leather is always a good choice for a headliner or wall panel. An important consideration is whether the final product will include a foam backing. Foam-backed vinyls are easy to clean but will have seams that require covering. We generally use foam-backed materials as headliners or other applications where the material is wrapped around the panel edges and the panels align next to one another.

Be sure to review manufacturer specifications for strength, abrasion resistance, cleaning and maintenance. Quality materials feature topcoat finishes that protect against bacteria and fungus, which is extremely important for marine applications. Manufacturers also offer materials in a multitude of colors and textures to complement boat interiors for a unified look throughout the cabins.

Headliner materials

Headliner fabrics come in a variety of options, including comfortable carpet-type fabrics and the foam-backed vinyls mentioned above.

A “HullBlanket” headliner fabric is a durable, stain-resistant carpet-type material that offers antistatic and moisture-proof properties. This economical material hides irregular hull imperfections and works especially well for vessels under 30 feet.

Vinyl headliners feature a marine vinyl front with or without a foam backing. Most foam-backed vinyls consist of a 3/16-inch foam adhered to the vinyl face. The foam adds a bit of cushion and helps conceal small imperfections in the hull. It can also be cut away to accommodate protrusions like nuts and bolt heads. Manufacturers now offer foam-backed headliner and perforated headliners in many textures and styles. These vinyl headliners create a smooth appearance and are easily wiped clean. Keep in mind that the edges of foam-backed vinyl should be covered, as they will leave a visible foam edge. Because of this, foam-backed vinyl is a great choice for applications where the seams will be hidden under trim pieces or where the material is wrapped around panel edges.

Installation tools and techniques

Do not underestimate the time and effort needed to prep areas for new surface materials. Be sure to remove all original plywood or any other material prior to installing new materials.

Beyond a general spray adhesive, such as 3M ™ General Trim Adhesive, only a few other materials are needed for installing a headliner or wall panels. Marine vinyl without a foam backing can also be used as a hull liner. Apply the spray adhesive to securely adhere the material to the hull, being careful to avoid bubbling or gaps. This is a one-shot process, so you need to get it right the first time. Like foam-backed vinyl, these products are easy to clean but will also have seams that may require covering. We recommend planning the material layout ahead of time on paper to avoid or limit any seams.

Tools that are lightweight and ergonomically designed with textured, nonslip surfaces make installation easier. Consider tools that include a 45-degree angle to allow for access to tight spaces at close angles. Straightedge tools work well on straight edges for short distances, and a 9-inch “pizza cutter” works well for long runs along either the perimeter or a mid-wall track.

SIDEBAR: Walls on the water

By Sigrid Tornquist

While textile wallcoverings are gaining momentum in the residential and commercial markets, wallcoverings for marine applications remain vinyl-based. Mildew-resistance, water resistance and cleanability are, of course, paramount. “What changes with wallcoverings for marine applications are the patterns,” says Dave Estiri, co-owner of Sea Furniture, Santa Ana, Calif. (www.seafurniture.com). “We’re seeing more bright colors and geometrics right now.”

Marine wallcovering substrates are typically wood, drywall and fiberglass. For a refit or redesign, the old wallpaper should be removed; walls should be scraped and sanded; and then washed and disinfected in preparation for the wallpaper, Estiri says.

Which primer to use depends on the substrate, according to Spencer Colgan, Tampa Bay Wallpaper Installer, Tampa, Fla. (www.tampabaywallpaperinstaller.com). “Fiberglass would need a different primer that would be more aggressive,” he says.

Vinyl with foam backing used over wall panels is an option, with a typical thickness ranging from 1/16 inch to 3/4 inch. “This is something you see more in older designs rather than in brand-new ones,” Estiri says. “The thing to note with this application is that after the surface is cleaned and conditioned, the foam with the vinyl needs to be backed with mesh so that everything stays together.”

As with any installation, the foundation of success is using well-made materials and stellar techniques. “You need to know what you’re doing and do it right,” Estiri says. “Make sure everything looks as good in five to 10 years as it does the first day.”

Revitalize Your Sailboat V-Berth: How We Replaced Our Headliner

In the video below we explore the process of replacing the worn-out and inefficient vinyl headliner in our sailboat’s v-berth. The existing headliner lacked insulation, leaving the V-berth vulnerable to temperature extremes. By removing the old one, adding insulation using closed-cell neoprene sheets, and installing a high-quality EverSoft™ Foam Backed Headliner , we achieved a visually appealing and comfortable v-berth.

Step 1: Removing the Old Headliner

To begin the transformation, the first task is to remove the existing vinyl headliner. Ours was glued to the fiberglass. Using tools like a heat gun, putty knives, and an electric multi-tool, we carefully scraped away the old one. This step requires patience and precision to ensure a smooth and clean canvas for the new installation.

Step 2: Adding Insulation

To enhance insulation and improve comfort, we incorporated 3/8 inch closed-cell neoprene sheets into the project. By creating a paper pattern to match the shape of your v-berth ceiling, we cut out the neoprene sheets accordingly. These sheets provide a barrier against heat and cold, ensuring a more comfortable environment in the v-berth.

Step 3: Gluing Neoprene Sheets and Installing EverSoft™ Foam Backed Headliner

We used contact cement to carefully adhere the neoprene sheets to the ceiling of the v-berth. Take your time to ensure proper alignment and avoid air pockets. Once the neoprene insulation is in place, it’s time to install the EverSoft™ Foam Backed Headliner. This vinyl liner, backed with foam, not only adds a touch of elegance but also enhances insulation and noise reduction within the v-berth.

Step 4: Finishing Touches with EverSoft 3/4″ Hidem Gimp

To achieve a polished and professional look, pay attention to the edges and seams of the headliner. Utilize EverSoft 3/4″ Hidem Gimp, a durable and aesthetically pleasing trim, to neatly cover the edges and create a seamless transition between panels. This finishing touch elevates the overall appearance of your new headliner installation.

By replacing the outdated vinyl headliner in our sailboat’s v-berth, we significantly enhanced insulation, improved aesthetics, and elevated our onboard comfort. The process involves removing the old one, adding closed-cell neoprene sheets for insulation, and installing the EverSoft™ Foam Backed Headliner. We now enjoy the benefits of a visually appealing and thermally efficient space, ensuring a cozy and comfortable retreat during our sailing adventures.

Looks good! What type of beadboard did you use (vinyl, MDF, wood)? Did the old liner get torn up during removal resulting in the need to fabricate new templates?

capta

SailingLoto

that looks great!

DArcy

That looks really good. This is something I am contemplating, replacing the vinyl liner.

Best things about project, 1) Access to stuff underneath (check bolts, through deck stuff) 2) Easy to upgrade lights 3) Change color/upgrade look. The project took a couple of days, you'll need good templates, jig-saw, and patience. Very doable. My brother's quote "Caulking trim and paint can make a carpenter what he ain't." my thoughts are time & money can solve any boat project. Thanks for checking out my work.

How do you secure the board & stuff to the ceiling? If you put a screw through won't that penetrate the coach roof causing leaks? Ken Y

Slogan: Foredeck person - "Will Work for Key Lime Pie!" The headliner upgrade did indeed come out great. Good work!!

31seahorse

Very nice looking headliner project. Although you identified the material as wood, the finished work appears to look like a bead board material we purchased at Lowes for a home project. Please hold the boos and cat-calls! The material was solid white vinyl and was packaged about 8 (? ) strips in either 6 foot or 8 foot lengths. It was tongue and groove jointed, and it drilled, cut, and glued easily. We chose it for its white, yet paintable surface (the packaging said), and its ease of installation since the strips were about 12 inches wide. One side had a 2 strip look while the other side had a 3 stripe look. Your finished overhead looks far superior to the two projects we completed. One was gluing up the carpet type of covering that was originally in a Precision and the other was a sheet vinyl replacement of the old carpet type headliner in an O'Day. The Precision project ended much better than the O'Day project

@william24424 I really like the look of that bead board. Replacing the vinyl headliner with bead board is now on the project list.

COMMENTS

  1. Best Headliner Material: How to Choose Headliner Fabric

Vinyl Upholstery Headliner. Vinyl upholstery headliner in a boat cabin. Marine vinyl by itself can also be used as a headliner. We recommend brands such as Naugahyde® Nauga Soft, EverSoft™, Sunbrella® Horizon and Morbern®. Using vinyl upholstery fabric means that there is no forgiveness for bumpy surfaces, so choose this option carefully.

  3. How To: Mount Overhead Headliners

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, many sailboats were finished with foam-backed vinyl headliners glued directly to the underside of the deck and coachroof molding. If you own such a boat, you're likely to be well acquainted with the problem of the headliner coming adrift as the glue and foam interface breaks down.

  4. Perforated (Dotted) Headliner Marine Vinyl Fabric

Try our Perforated Marine Vinyl. Perforated with small holes giving that perfect dotted look. This product has holes in it so it is not waterproof. It does perfectly match our Flexa Marine Vinyl. It is mold/mildew resistant, UV treated and is 3rd party tested for quality. This product is not waterproof as water will flow through the holes.

  5. Wallcoverings for vessel interiors

A "HullBlanket" headliner fabric is a durable, stain-resistant carpet-type material that offers antistatic and moisture-proof properties. This economical material hides irregular hull imperfections and works especially well for vessels under 30 feet. Vinyl headliners feature a marine vinyl front with or without a foam backing.

  6. Headliner Revitalization For Our V-Berth

By replacing the outdated vinyl headliner in our sailboat's v-berth, we significantly enhanced insulation, improved aesthetics, and elevated our onboard comfort. The process involves removing the old one, adding closed-cell neoprene sheets for insulation, and installing the EverSoft™ Foam Backed Headliner.

  8. Removing and reinstalling vinyl cloth headliners

    2. Headliner construction - The headliner is held in place with a plastic C-clamp track the holds the headliner in place. The vinyl liner is tucked into this track. 3. Pulling it out - I wedged in the plastic scrapper in very near the corner of the liner where I wanted to pull it out.

Bainbridge's Perforated Headliner provides a smooth appearance with a supple feel that will add a high-quality atmosphere to your boats cabin. 14. What glue for the vinyl headliner

I got an estimate from an upholstry shop who does work on boats. They said that the "release temperature" of the aerosol glues (3M trim, 777) is about 150 degrees, and this causes the liner to fall. They have a compressed air spray glue system that will put up the headliner, and withstand higher temperatures.
