MOONBEAM

50 FT' SHEARWATER STAYSAIL SCHOONER 45 1997

Fully custom designed and finished "Moonbeam" and her sistership were designed for the Southern Atlantic Ocean where conditions are some of the most demanding in the world. For the construction of these two fine yachts, Fraser Yachts only employed the finest craftsmen, at the top of their game.

Moonbeam is Hull #1 and the builder’s boat! Her keel was laid in 1997 and she was launched in Cape Town South Africa in 1998 as “Moonbeam”. Her sister ship "Wind Dancer" a.k.a. "Apella" is hull # 2.

Designed by Dudley Dix, the Shearwater 45 Staysail Schooner has the same classic lines as the Shearwater 39 but with a modern spade rudder instead of the transom hung rudder, enhancing the appearance, and improving close handling maneuvers. The hull has a clipper box, substantial sheer, and slight tumblehome aft fairing into a radiused champagne-glass stern, good to look at from any angle. The underbody is clean and undistorted with a fine entry, easy midship section and powerful stern.

Characteristics will follow the traditions of the smaller sister for performance- easy motion and good manners on all points of sail. Designed to be handled by two, the more costly but more easily handled staysail schooner rig is traditional North American in appearance with heavily raked mast (7 degrees) and with tremendous appeal to those decerning owners with an eye for the traditional and for the elegance of yore.

As is normal for schooners, it will not be happy on a dead run and will need to be sailed a little freer on a beat than a cutter rig but will fly on any heading from a fetch to a broad reach.

Following the ABS Guide for Offshore Yachts, Moonbeam is immensely strong. Built to unwavering standards of structural integrity by a team of fine experienced craftsmen, her construction is designed and built to take heavy seas in her stride, affording her crew the ability to make safe and swift passages.

Forward of the accommodation is a watertight bulkhead with stowage forward for sails and light but bulky items such as inflatables and outboards. Access is from a 4'x4' teak hatch with three points of closure. Located in the sail locker are fenders and the newly installed electrical panel that controls the three forward bilge pumps and supplies current to the Lofrans anchor winch and the Vetus bow thruster and washdown pump. Aft is another watertight bulkhead separating the lazarette and the steering gear from the interior. The keel is a moderately long fin and comprises a lead casting bolted to a molded GRP stub which forms a sump for the collection of bilge water.

The interior has been custom designed with a knowledge and respect for the sea, but with the lines blended to produce a roomy appearance. There is a comfortable accommodation for 5 and one more can stretch out in the saloon if the occasion arises. Moonbeam sleeps 4 aft in double cabins fitted out with fans, lights, storage pockets and comfortable memory foam mattress toppers. All cabins have hanging lockers and shelves. Alongside the forward cabin is a large and spacious head compartment with a wet shower aft of the head. The main cabin includes the saloon, galley, navigation station, two built in captain chairs, large settee, custom main table, access to the battery room, shaft alley, engine, sole compartments, and gear storage area. The salon has a curved dining area with the fixed custom table (liquor cabinet underneath). Voluminous lockers and shelves give plenty of stowage to the area.

The galley is large with expansive work surfaces for ease of preparing food. The U-shaped secures the cook against being thrown around. Forward of the Caribbean Stove is reefer compartment utilizing the Frigiboat system capable of cooling your food or freezing it all. A custom galley lockers and drawers provide ample space for pots, pans, plates, and utensils. A raw water foot pump, hand pump (for filtered water) and a modern pressure sensitive Jabsco water pump provide ample water for all of the galley and head water needs. The galley has plenty of overhead LED lighting to provide an excellent working environment.

Under the stainless-steel double sink is the Yanmar 3JH2E Diesel engine, with removeable panels all around for easy access to engine components. A big plus is the ability to disconnect the plumbing and remove the entire module off for unimpeded engine access. Opposite the galley and engine spaces is a large storage cabinet for tools and other required gear.

Next to the cabinet is the custom and inlaid navigation station desk and panels containing all the electrical switches, Raymarine A-95 Chart plotter, XM weather, Icom vhf and Icom SSB along with the Victron electrical monitor, Fusion stereo and cd/USB player and the bilge pump switch.

Hull Specifications: The hull is built in foam-cored glass reinforced polyester (GRP) sandwich construction made in a split mold with GRP deck bonded to the hull with bonding compound and glassed with GRP strapping to form a strong monocoque structure which is absolutely watertight.
