Cascade27

Hello all! I'm relatively new to the forum and a relatively new sailor/cruiser although I've driven ski boats all my life. It wasn't until later that I fell in love with sailing. It's a life changing experience and having the love of water already apart of me sailing has made me feel that much more connected to the sea. Last August 2019 I bought a 1980 27' Cascade and have spent many days sailing my local waters in the South Puget Sound ever since. Of course I will be sailing as much of the Puget Sound as possible and then this summer venturing up to the San Juan Islands. Eventually I would like to explore Victoria B.C. and the surrounding islands and inlets, then one day sail to Alaska and explore. I would love to share some pics and get any feedback on the boat. I know Cascade Yachts were built in Portland, OR and were the product of lead designer Robert Smith who took hull #1 and won his division in the Swiftsure Race. She handles well although has a rather narrow beam at 8.83ft. She's a Masthead Sloop. Fin w/spade rudder and displacement of 6,400 lbs. Any thoughts, feedback or anyone else with a Cascade would love to hear from you. Cheers!

Welcome. Nice looking boat.

Looks good to me. But that doesn’t matter. What counts is how you feel on her. The cabin looks like two max for a meal. I’m curious about how many you can sleep. We spend most of our time on our h27 in the cockpit. But it’s good to be able to retreat to the cabin in cold or foul weather. We’ve sailed twice in the San Juans, and a cozy cabin is a plus there. Good luck on her this summer!

cascade 27 sailboat review

Cascade Yachts were originally built in Portland, Oregon, and were the product of lead designer Robert Smith (former Sparkman’s and Stephens Yachts’ designer) and a team of local sailors. The company roots go back to 1954, and Cascade Yacht Works is still in business, now out of Warrenton, Oregon. They may have been the first to use the term bulletproof literally when describing their builds, for they actually shot their boats with firearms back in the day to prove their strength.

Cascade 27 specs

An example of a Cascade 27 boat is Skylark, a 1983 model currently for sale. It is decked out with a slightly wider than standard cabin house and a Universal M2-12, 11-horsepower diesel engine. The owners allegedly took Skylark to Hawaii and back, and a custom trailer makes the Sea of Cortez and inland waters all that more accessible.

If you’re on the market for a reliable sailboat that won’t break the bank, the Cascade 27 is a statement of Cascadian pride. Skylark is currently for sale with the Port Townsend Boat Company and listed at $16,500.

1980 Cascade 27

  • Description

Seller's Description

The Classic 1980 Cascade 27 was originally built in Portland, Oregon and encompasses a piece of Northwest History. Cascade Yachts was founded in 1954 by a group of sailors that were experimenting with fiberglass hull construction.

The 27 foot Cascade has a lot of upgrades that include all new rigging along with a new custom fitted Pineapple Main Sail. You’ll enjoy the large aft cockpit while you take control of the beautiful pilot wheel that includes ample seating for family and friends.

Set up for single-handled sailing, the winches, lines, main sheet and halyards are easily accessed from the cockpit.

The cabin has room to relax with comfortable seating and a small galley and head. The Cascade is the perfect size for daily cruising or those long bucket list adventures.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

yourself. If the boat is out of the easier, in the you need snorkeling or to pay for a haulout.

Keelbolts would depend on the type of bolts used. Do the bolts thread into the itself or is there a flange at the top of the and the bolts are thrubolts? If the former then you can probably do the one at a time in the water. If the later you will need to haul-out. Figure $100 for the bolts (these are big bolts and may be a special alloy such as Monel) and $25 for a tube of appropriate sealer.

harder to say, because the system as a whole doesn't means that you don't know which components are bad:
,
Panel
breakers
,

It could be as simple as a corroded connection to the which would entail the terminal or as bad as a strike in which case the whole system would need replacing or it could be somewhere in between.

As a guess, assuming alternator& still work, you could do a very basic including, batteries, all new , panel, breakers, steaming and sailing lights and lights, and , basic depthsounder and basic knotmeter/log for $1500-2k.

All told I would expect to drop about $3k including haulout and other unforseen issues.

For $4K with that kind of work to do, I would jump at it in a heart beat, especially if it was a version, though I think this boat is too early to be a boat. Several Cascade 29's have been RTW and are still offered for new build, 52yr after first being built.

Where is this boat?
A house is but a boat so poorly built and so firmly run aground no one would think to try and refloat it.

anyway. The boat was surveyed three years ago by the owner, at which time these items were discovered. Repairs obviously weren't done. The guy probably didn't have an extra 3k laying around.

The is a one stroke Yanmar.

owner have receipts from whenever the wire was replaced, or does he just have a date? At 10yr I would be thinking about replacement, at 12yr I would be actively doing so, especially in a tropical saltwater locale.

Is there a website or online ad to look at?

is necessary to replace the bolts. The bolts are more than likely to match the keel but you can take a magnet to them to see. They are not hard to change and if the yard you are in will allow you to grind the glass covering the heads then shouldn't be hard to remove. I've replaced 10 of them on my boat.
Usually the bolts go up through the keel flange on each side into a (floor) cross beam and are bolted to the top of the floor with a big washer under the nut.
$4K is a good considering 7 years ago they for $15K.
kind regards,

Maybe I'll put in a lowball offer contingent on and sea trial.

I'm not too mechanical and would rely on Keehi to do the work.

Cascade may have some in stock.
Like Skiprjohn said the kell bolts go through a flange on the cast iron keel then up through the floor timbers.
Check the floor timbers and the shear clamp for . The replacement of the shear clamp SUCKS. Trust me I know. The toe rails are not make any more the die got broke.
If the sails, rigging, floor timbers and shear clamp are in good shape sounds like an easy fixer.

Can't even to for a full survey with a broken prop.

I have just bought a Cascade 36 hull # 8 and I am looking for advice on some how too's lol this seems to be a very good boat very solid and very affordable. if this is still active please message back I am looking to chat about this topic.

cascade 27 sailboat review

I've got a good friend who has owned one for a few decades. I crewed on it from Tonga to Fiji to NZ and Hawaii, plus a few other places. Never let us down. If you message me your email address i'll send it to him. Can't promise he'll answer but will ask.

Thank you so much My email address is top priority real estate @ gmail.com for some reason it wont let me put it as a link in here but if you take all the spaces out it should work lol .. thank you again!

sure, I passed it on. Don't know if he'll contact you or not. Where are you? Since Cascades were built in Portland OR there are a bunch in that area. Rose City Yacht club has a few. That was the home port of Raindrop which won the Pacific Cup back a few years. I considered buying one as they are such a great deal. I think the value is hit hard by the fact that many were not finished very well below decks as they were kind of a "kit" boat. But I've seen some that are really very nice. Having made my sea bones on one leaves a special place in my heart. Also there is a premium boat works guy in the Portland area that has done mods on many Cascades, like extending the transom and dog houses. Tommy Becker. He does fantastic work.

Thank you! I am located in Michigan the Tawas area i have recently purchased the boat from New Hampshire. The inside is amazing mahogany wood that is finished as beautiful as you can imagine. I will post some pictures on here. I am so great full that you have helped me find the right people Thank you so much!

I have a 1980 Cascade 36. It is a fine ocean boat. We have won many offshore races. I moved the shrouds from the toe rail to the cabin to get a tighter jib sheet angle, so the boat points better. It is strong, dry and comfortable, a very strong boat.

Review of cascade 42

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 276.0 liter fresh water capacity.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.83 - 1.93 meter (6.00 - 6.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for cascade 42 is 1.82, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for cascade 42 is about 251 kg/cm, alternatively 1410 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 251 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1410 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 42m 2 (452 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.
