Making Superyacht DILBAR: The World’s Largest Yacht

By Rebecca Bradbury   23 June 2016

A new time-lapse video of the 156m/512ft superyacht DILBAR , confirmed as the world’s largest yacht in terms of volume, has been released to celebrate her recent delivery to the Mediterranean .

The spectacular footage provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of DILBAR under construction at the Lurssen shipyard as well as aerial shots of her 2,000nm delivery passage to the Mediterranean .

DILBAR is now the world’s largest yacht with a gross tonnage of 15,917 tons, surpassing superyacht ‘Al Said’, a fellow build from the shipyard measuring in at 15,850 tons.

Indeed, as she takes shape, viewers can see her sheer scale as well as the huge amount of labor involved in her 52-month build as welders and other craftsmen get to work on her hull and superstructure.

Lurssen also revealed that the motor yacht was ‘one of the most complex and challenging yachts that has ever been built, both in terms of dimension and technology'.

The video unveils the curved and fluid lines which make up DILBAR's timeless profile

superyacht DILBAR cruising on her maiden voyage int he Mediterranean

As luxury yacht DILBAR gets underway and smoothly cuts through the water, the video unveils the curved and fluid lines which make up her timeless profile as well as her expansive foredeck and sundeck aft, both home to helipads.

She is also said to ‘provide spaces in the interior which have never been seen on a yacht before’. But the superyacht world is left guessing what these could be as the Andrew Winch-styled interior remains a heavily guarded secret.

In terms of length, M/Y DILBAR is the fourth largest yacht in the world.

Massive superyacht ‘owned by sister of Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov’ is seized in Hamburg

The Dilbar, a luxury yacht owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, sails in Istanbul's Bosphorus

German authorities said they have seized a massive superyacht in Hamburg after determining that it belongs to the sister of Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov .

The Federal Criminal Police Office said that, after “extensive investigations” and despite “offshore concealment”, it had been able to determine that the owner is Gulbakhor Ismailova, Mr Usmanov’s sister.

Superyacht Dilbar was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than $648 million (£493 million).

The yacht features a 25m swimming pool, two helipads, and an on-ship garden and is valued between $600m (£456m) to $750m (£570m), according to the US treasury.

Germany police said authorities worked in Brussels to ensure that European Union sanctions applied to the owner.

It says the yacht can no longer be sold, rented or loaded.

The United States and the EU last month announced economic sanctions against Mr Usmanov, a metals magnate, over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

A look inside Dilbar, Alisher Usmanov's $594M superyacht seized by Germany

Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov’s superyacht was seized by German authorities as part of EU sanctions imposed on him in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Monday, February 28. The 512-foot yacht called Dilbar was named after Usmanov's mother and had been undergoing refitting in the northern city of Hamburg since October 2021.

The seizure of the superyacht comes after European Union adopted sanctions on six of Russia’s wealthiest individuals, including Usmanov. The billionaire commenting on the sanctions said, "I believe that such decision is unfair, and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity, and business reputation. I will use all legal means to protect my honor and reputation."

About Dilbar

Dilbar built as Project Omar is a super-yacht launched on 14 November 2015 at the German Lürssen shipyard after nearly four-and-a-half years in build. The stunning interiors and the exteriors of the yacht were designed by Andrew Winch and Espen Oeino respectively. According to a video of the yacht being refueled on social media, a 500,000-liter refuel would cost up to $1.1 million with an average price of $2.20 per liter.

The yacht contains the largest swimming pool ever installed on a yacht at 180 cubic meters as well as two helicopter pads, a sauna, a beauty salon, and a gym. Its plush interiors have more than 1,000 sofa cushions and it can host up to 24 people in 12 suites. For guests missing dry land, Dilbar is equipped with a huge garden with a specially developed variety of grass that tolerates salty sea air. The luxurious yacht has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure and is powered by 30,000 KW electric diesel power plant.

The Russian billionaire Usmanov is said to have purchased Dilbar from German shipbuilder Lürssen, in 2016 which custom-built it for him over 52 months. According to the Lürssen's website, the superyacht is the world's largest motor yacht by gross tonnage at 15,917 tons and is typically manned by a crew of 96 people. The firm calls Dilbar as "one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built, in terms of both dimensions and technology." According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dilbar is estimated to be worth $594 million.

The yacht is part of Usmanov’s estimated multibillion-dollar fortune, which spans stakes in iron ore and steel giant Metalloinvest and consumer electronics firm Xiaomi, as well as smaller holdings in telecom, mining and media. Usmanov is also one of the earliest investors in Facebook along with fellow billionaire Yuri Milner. The billionaire owns extensive real estate assets in the West, including two estates in the UK valued at a combined $280 million, and luxury homes in Munich, Germany; Lausanne, Switzerland; Monaco; and Sardinia.

German authorities have frozen Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov ’s 512-ft superyacht “Dilbar” after an investigation revealed that it was legally owned by his sister, who has also been sanctioned over Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine .

The Russian businessman was sanctioned by the European Union (EU) on 28 February and by the UK and the US in March.

His sister Gulbakhor Ismailova was sanctioned by the EU and the UK earlier this month as authorities claimed that Mr Usmanov “indirectly transferred assets”, including the vessel, to her.

“The luxury yacht Dilbar is subjected to the sanction law and could be legally fixed in Hamburg,” German authorities announced on Wednesday.

The yacht cannot be “sold, rented or pledged as collateral”, a spokesperson for the federal criminal police office of Germany said, according to news agency DPA.

Touted to be the world’s largest yacht by volume, Dilbar had been undergoing refitting in the northern German city.

Forbes had reported that the vessel, undergoing a refit in the shipyards of Blohm + Voss, was not allowed to leave the port of Hamburg after the EU froze its assets. Due to sanctions, the yacht’s entire crew was fired shortly after.

The yacht features a 25m swimming pool, two helipads, and an on-ship garden and is valued between $600m (£456m) to $750m (£570m), according to the US treasury.

After the Russian president’s declaration of war on 24 February, the EU announced it was freezing Mr Usmanov’s assets, calling him a “pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin” and a man who is “considered to be one of Russia ’s businessmen-officials, who were entrusted with servicing financial flows, but their positions depend on the will of the president”.

Mr Usmanov, known as “the hard man of Russia”, is one of the richest men in the country with an estimated worth of $18.4bn.

Russian billionaires have been scrambling to save their yachts and other assets from western governments that are trying to seize them.

The Fiji police on Thursday said they were investigating the arrival of a luxury vessel suspected of being owned by a Russian oligarch.

According to local media, authorities have seized superyacht Amadea owned by Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, who was also sanctioned by the US and its western allies.

The US embassy said it was aware the Amadea had docked in Fiji’s Lautoka port and they were cooperating with authorities of the island nation.

“The United States is committed to finding and seizing the assets of the oligarchs who have supported the Russian Federation’s brutal, unprovoked war of choice against Ukraine,” the embassy said in a statement.

How the Bayesian yacht sinking unfolded and why the search has been hampered

Search continues for british tech tycoon mike lynch, his daughter, and others who are missing.

Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast, where the search continues for British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, who are among six tourists missing after a luxury yacht sank in a tornado off the coast of Sicily. The pair are among six tourists missing after the yacht, named Bayesian, was battered during intense storms off the coast of Palermo in the early hours of Monday. Picture date: Tuesday August 20, 2024. PA Photo. Fifteen people including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued, according to local media. Superyacht the Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning after being hit by a tornado. There were 22 people on board – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his wife and daughter.

Fifteen people have been rescued but one person has been confirmed dead and Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six still missing, with divers continuing the search near Porticello, east of Sicily’s capital Palermo.

Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares is one of those who have been rescued.

The search has been hampered by the depth the vessel is lying at, and difficulty gaining access to it on the seabed.

Some of the passengers were members of Mr Lynch’s legal team and their families. He had planned the trip as a celebration after being acquitted earlier this year of multiple fraud charges, following a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his software group Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Here, i looks at how and why the disaster unfolded.

Tornado strikes and boat sinks

Bayesian was struck by a “violent storm” while anchored off the coast of Sicily, near the fishing village of Porticello, east of Palermo. At about 5am local time on Monday, it capsized and disappeared beneath the water.

A captain of a nearby fishing boat said he saw a waterspout in the harbour just before the yacht sank. Waterspouts are tornados that occur over water rather than land, with water mist forming around a huge column of rotating air.

Undated handout photo issued by Fabio La Bianca of the yacht Bayesian (left), which has capsized and sunk off the coast of Sicily in bad weather. Fifteen people were rescued from the 49-metre sailboat - but another seven were unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the Italian fire rescue service. Issue date: Monday August 19, 2024. PA Photo. See PA story ACCIDENT Italy. Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m mast to snap in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said of those on board: “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

‘We heard screams’: 15 rescued

The 56m vessel was carrying 22 people including British, American and Canadian nationals. A Dutch ship nearby provided assistance.

Karsten Börner, commander of the Dutch ship, named Sir Robert Baden Powell , told Giornale di Sicilia it had been difficult to stabilise his ship in the windy weather.

He said they saw a red flare coming from the area of the yacht and went to rescue 15 people. The coastguard then arrived.

Mr Börner said: “We heard screams – we continued to search the area but we didn’t find anyone other than the 15 survivors who had already been rescued.”

According to Mr Börner, those missing included Bayesian’s owner and a child, Reuters reported.

He said his crew took on board some survivors who were on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured. He added: “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

Fabio Cefalu, a fisherman who witnessed the storm, told Italian media he stayed on site for several hours. “After 10 minutes we saw a flare in the sky, we waited about 10 minutes to see the intensity of the tornado and we went out to sea,” he said.

“We were first to give rescue but we found no one at sea, we only found cushions and the remains of the boat.”

Mother holds baby above the waves

Charlotte Golunski, a British colleague of Mr Lynch, was among those rescued. She told of how she kept her one-year-old alive by holding her above the waves until they managed to get on a lifeboat.

“I held her [her daughter] afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning,” she told la Repubblica .

Italian authorities launch investigation into ‘open hatches’ role in yacht disaster

Italian authorities launch investigation into whether 'open hatches' caused yacht to sink

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Ms Golunski and her daughter Sofia are being treated in hospital, as is Sofia’s father, James Emsley.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at Giovanni di Cristina paediatric hospital, where they are being treated, said: “She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water.

“Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.

“She told me that she was in the water for no more than two, three seconds, and she managed to save the baby, to keep her arms up, and then, with the others, they were able to get on the lifeboat, and then, I think, they were rescued by the coastguard.”

Divers recover body near wreckage

On Monday afternoon, divers uncovered the boat’s wreckage 50m below the water. Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco said on X that early inspections of the wreck were “unsuccessful” due to limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

Francesco Venuto, the spokesperson for Sicily’s civil protection agency, told the BBC that they “think [the corpses] must be there [in the boat]”.

“We’ve been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we’ve found nothing. That wouldn’t make sense, in this conditions we should have found something by now,” he added.

Coastguard: Body is ship’s Canadian cook

In a statement, the Palermo Coastguard said that the body the divers recovered was the ship’s cook, the only crew member unaccounted for. He has not been formally identified.

Four Britons and two Americans are still missing, the coastguard said.

The rescue mission has involved four patrol boats, a helicopter, and a team of divers. A naval and underwater team from Palermo fire brigade has joined the search.

A specialist team of divers experienced in cave search and rescue arrived from Rome on Monday evening.

Access to the yacht has been difficult

Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire department, said the rescue had been hampered by the depth the vessel had sunk. It is about half a mile out to sea from Porticello, and is 50 metres underwater.

A boat from Vigili del Fuoco was seen leaving the port at about 11.30am local time on Tuesday.

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing, including British entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily, Italy August 19, 2024. Vigili del Fuoco/Handout via REUTERS ATTENTION EDITORS THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. DO NOT OBSCURE LOGO.

The fire brigade said the entrance to the yacht on the seabed was “complex”, and planning was under way to “open” easier access to it.

Mr Cari told Italian news agency Ansa that the dive team had entered a lounge area of the yacht via a ladder and were working on breaking a 3cm-thick glass window to access another area.

He said the bridge – the room from which a captain navigates – was full of electrical cables and it was impossible to see inside the yacht from outside.

UK team deployed

The Foreign Office said it was supporting a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily. The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is also sending a team of inspectors to conduct a “preliminary assessment” into the sinking of the UK-registered yacht.

Morgan Stanley boss among missing

On Tuesday morning, more details emerged about the passengers still missing.

They include Morgan Stanley’s International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer – who appeared at the trial of Mike Lynch, as a witness for the defence – and Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo.

Mr Lynch, his daughter Hannah and Mr Bloomer’s wife Judy are also missing.

Ayla Reynold, a New Zealand national working at Clifford Chance, survived the ordeal. Her father Lin Ronald confirmed to The Telegraph that she had been invited aboard as thanks for assistance in Mr Lynch’s recent court case.

We didn’t see tornado coming, say yacht’s captain

The captain of the Bayesian said the crew had no idea that the tornado had been on its way.

“We didn’t see it coming,” the captain, whose name has been reported as James Catfield or James Caulfield, 51, told La Repubblica, speaking from his hospital bed.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said that there were 200kph (124mph) winds in the area on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday.

Describing such storm conditions, he added: “A so-called funnel cloud forms, generating winds of up to 200kmh which can create a waterspout at sea by sucking water into the air.

“The event can be restricted to a few hundred metres and be over in 10 minutes.”

Ma è chiusa dall'interno e spessa 3 centimetri, dunque dobbiamo riuscire a rimuoverla e poi potremmo avanzare meglio all'interno".

Vortice sull'Italia, temporali e nubifragi: ecco dove e quanto dureranno.

I superstiti

L'imbarcazione batte bandiera inglese

L'imbarcazione batte bandiera inglese.
