Seller's Description

North Atlantic 29 For Sale. ‘Alchemist’ is one of only six North Atlantic 29’s junk rig sailboats around and probably the best example out there. Built by Bounty Yachts in California and designed by English offshore racing designer Angus Primrose and Blondie Hasler she has just undergone a four-year complete refit and is a TURN KEY boat, ready for some serious sailing. This boat is perfect for the cruising couple who want to explore far flung places in comfort and safety. Heavily laid up, solid, thick fiberglass hull w/ glassed in reinforcing stringers. The hull and deck are super thick and super strong. You feel it when you walk on deck. This boat is built like a TANK. The full width cabin top gives a remarkable amount of livable space down below for a 29 footer. Comes with a swinging gimbaled chair for the inside sailing station. You can completely control the boat from inside while dry , warm and comfortable. You can even adjust the wind vane from inside, so there is almost no need to go outside the cabin on a long passage. Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

North Atlantic 29 Junk Rig sailboat sale or trade

Cruiser Wiki

Boat: Sunbird 32
sailboat . I have 2 sailboats . . . and just want to concentrate on finishing my other one.

The North Atlantic 29 was designed by the one and only Blondie Hasler and made by the Bounty Yacht company in , they made approximately 8-10 of these. They are INCREDIBLY rare . . .and owners rarely sell them.

She would make an excellent "go anywhere" for a solo sailor or couple.

Chris and Jess Bray have done some fantastic voyages on a cold molded version of this design. They voyaged the entire Northwest Passage! you can "Teleport" and see videos online of their incredible voyage . . .and how bulletproof the NA29 is.. They are also selling their for $30,000.

She is a U.S. Coast Guard Documented Vessel and is located in Alameda ,

She is a spectacular design . . .. . .with a very unique , all "mid cockpit" . . . she can be sailed from inside the warmth of the boat. She also has a gimbaled , swinging seat , so you can sit and 'drive " the boat while relaxing and enjoying the view!

After spending the last few weeks aboard , her up and taking stock , it appears that the previous owner was right in the middle of a complete when he her. Some is only partially installed . . .meaning not wired up yet and never used. She has many projects to complete . . .but is an incredibly well built and ROCK SOLID boat.

The boat is "geared up" very well : , 3040 , , , all wind/speed sailing ,a new (uninstalled) 20 gallon , 35 lb. knockoff with tons of chain, miles of spare line , a never used $3000. , 2 gorgeous Anderson winches ,and even has a "Hasler-esque" clear plexiglass dome for one of the round hatches . . .VERY COOL!
I have the tanbark sail partially rigged (just need to do the parrels) and it and all battens are in fine condition.
The MD7a (13 h.p.)was partially taken apart , and I , along with some mechanical help , deduced that he was out the system . . . pretty common on these. I just spent the last week cleaning and putting the back together with new gaskets. She spins freely and has great . . ..but . . ..now the starter is frozen from sitting so long and needs a (the starter)

She needs a haul and new .

Previous owner cut out half of the starboard settee to build a proper . . .so , there is a big hole there. The new bulkhead is already cut . . ..ready to build to suit.

a few days of sorting the . . .and she will be out sailing , another month of sweat and grease . . .and you will have a fine , junk rigged vessel that can take you anywhere in , comfort and style.
Designed by Angus Primrose and Blondie Hasler
: 29'3 , LWL: 23' , Beam: 9'7 , : 5'6
Sail area: 429 sq. ft. , Ballast: 4200 lb. lead encapsulated
thick , solid ,

The boat is in Alameda , Ca. in a transferable slip in a very cool Marina right next door to a boat yard and numerous businesses. Slip rental is approximately $260. per month

The boat is also listed separately . In the condition she is in now . . .she is worth around $10,000.

Priced for at $9000. OBO

Deleted user Unfortunately with work and life I was not ready to move on Jonny's boat!  I bought a camper instead!  LOL
Deleted user Hi Annie, I did not realize there was a way to do that easily.  Thank you.

Deleted user They are actually very rare. The Aussies boat you refer to was not built by Bounty Enterprises but a custom build in eastern Canada. There might have been 3(?) fiberglass NA 29's built by Bounty in CA and then there was the wooden one from which they built the mold. I've seen one of the fiberglass versions in Hawaii. There are 2 pics of the Hawaii boat, "CapeSeeker", here: (scroll down close to the bottom)

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  Northern 29

'How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat', an eBook by Dick McClary

A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 16.5 suggests that the Northern 29 will approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 51.8 means that she'll stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

A Displacement/Length Ratio of 337 , tells us she's clearly a heavy displacement cruising boat. You can load her down with all your cruising gear and equipment and it will hardly affect her waterline.

Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 25.5 suggests that crew comfort in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a coastal cruiser with moderate stability, which is not encouraging news for anyone prone to seasickness.

Her Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.9 tells us that she would be a safer choice of sailboat for offshore sailing than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

The Northern 29: A Classic Coastal Cruiser

The Northern 29 is a monohull sailboat with a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder. It has a fiberglass hull and deck, with a lead ballast. The mast is keel-stepped and the rig is simple and efficient, with a single spreader and a backstay. The sail area is 35.9 m², which gives the boat a sail area/displacement ratio of 16.5. This means that the boat is moderately powered and can handle a variety of wind conditions.

The Northern 29 has a displacement of 3,289 kg and a ballast/displacement ratio of 51.7%. This means that the boat is heavy and stiff, with a good righting moment if heeled or capsized. The boat has a comfort ratio of 25.3, which indicates that it is suitable for coastal cruising and can handle moderate seas. The boat has a capsize screening of 1.9, which means that it has a low risk of capsizing in bad weather.

The Northern 29 has a waterline length of 6.5 m and a beam of 2.7 m. It has a draft of 1.4 m, which allows it to access shallow waters and anchorages. The boat has an air draft of 12.8 m, which means that it can pass under most bridges and power lines.

The Northern 29 has an auxiliary engine, which is usually a Universal Atomic 4 gas engine with 30 HP. The fuel capacity is 38 l, which gives the boat a limited range under power. The water capacity is 57 litres, which also limits the duration of cruising without refilling.

Accommodation The Northern 29 has a spacious and cozy interior, with enough room for four to six people to sleep comfortably. The layout consists of:

  • A V-berth in the forward cabin, with storage lockers and shelves;
  • A head compartment to port, with a marine toilet and a sink;
  • A hanging locker to starboard, opposite the head;
  • A main saloon with two settees that can convert into berths, and a folding table in the center;
  • A galley to port, with a two-burner stove, an icebox and a sink;
  • A navigation station to starboard, with a chart table and an electrical panel;
  • A quarter berth aft of the navigation station, which can also be used as storage.

The interior has plenty of natural light and ventilation, thanks to the large windows and hatches. The headroom is about 1.8 m, which is adequate for most people. The cabinetry and trim are made of teak wood, which adds warmth and elegance to the atmosphere.

Hull and Deck The hull and deck of the Northern 29 are made of fiberglass, with balsa core in some areas for stiffness and insulation. The hull shape is round-bottomed, with a moderate freeboard and overhangs. The deck is flat and wide, with non-skid surface and teak toe rails. The cockpit is aft, with a tiller steering system and an engine control panel. The cockpit seats are long and comfortable, with storage lockers underneath.

The deck hardware is simple and functional, with stainless steel fittings and cleats. The bow has an anchor locker and a bow roller for easy anchoring. The stern has a boarding ladder for easy access to the water.

Mast and Rigging The mast and rigging of the Northern 29 are designed for performance and ease of handling. The mast is made of aluminum alloy, with a single spreader and a backstay. The mast is keel-stepped, which adds strength and stability to the rig. The boom is also made of aluminum alloy, with an internal reefing system.

The sail plan consists of a mainsail and a genoa, which are controlled by winches and tracks on the deck. The sails are made of dacron, with reinforced corners and battens. The boat also has a spinnaker, which can be flown from a spinnaker pole on the mast.

The rigging is made of stainless steel wire, with swaged terminals and turnbuckles. The rigging is simple and efficient, with a forestay, a backstay, two upper shrouds, two lower shrouds and two intermediate shrouds. The rigging is adjustable, with a backstay tensioner and a babystay.

Keel and Rudder The keel and rudder of the Northern 29 are designed for stability and maneuverability. The keel is a fin keel, with a lead ballast. The keel has a moderate aspect ratio, which means that it is not too deep or too shallow. The keel provides lift and reduces leeway when sailing upwind.

The rudder is a skeg-hung rudder, which means that it is attached to a skeg that extends from the hull. The rudder has a balanced shape, which means that it has some area forward of the rudder post. The rudder provides good steering control and reduces weather helm when sailing on the wind.

SAILING IN LIMBO

Bluewater voyaging on a small boat

Sunday 10 March 2013

Across the atlantic in a 26-foot yacht.

Limbo going well
Leaving Mindelo
Quite a long way to go
Our usual trade wind rig
Light weather sailing under cruising chute..
...and heavier conditions.
Small boat, big sea..
Another beautiful sunset
A bird's eye view
Half way! (Although there seems to be some navigational disagreement).
Barbados! The island is just visible in the background
Finally at rest: clearing in, Port St Charles
Lochmarin greeting us
At anchor, Carlisle Bay.
Finally enjoying that rum!

An absolute great read!! Well done!!

Brilliant post and wonderful photos, glad you had such an enriching and interesting experience! And I'm pleased to see that navigating wasn't too much of a pain for you!

Really enjoyed reading this! Thanks for posting and for the great resources!

Hi I am planning a very similar voyage to you in my colvic 26 'Blue Mover'. One of my main concerns is that we will be unable to stop in French or Spanish ports since we are struggling to find anyone who will insure us in such a small boat. How did you overcome this?

Hi, sorry for the delay! We were insured through Pantaenius, who covered us up to and including Madeira and the Canaries. They have a reputation for being flexible with smaller or more unusual boats/small crews (others turned their noses up) and are highly recommended. I think it was about £400 total for the extended area cover. We weren't insured for the transatlantic - we planned to reinsure in the Caribbean, although I can't remember now if we actually did this..! I don't recall anyone actually checking our insurance documents, although some marinas do. Good luck!

Yorkshire guy living in the woods of Florida, close to the Suwannee river & feeling the urge to get a sail boat, loved reading your post, well done the two of you. Cheers Frank

Thank you! I will finish this blog one day and plan to add some technical info too..

Reward up to $75,000 2 years after Apex man murdered at NC coast

A PEX, N.C. (WNCN) — Two years after an Apex husband was murdered on the North Carolina coast, the reward for his killers has been increased by $20,000 and police have a definitive car make and model in the crime.

Randy Joseph Miller was killed just outside his Atlantic Beach home early the morning of August 29, 2022.

Miller, 65, was at a home on West Atlantic Avenue for a fishing trip. Miller was in the driveway loading up a fishing boat around 5:45 a.m. Monday.

He was fatally stabbed in the crime that has stumped investigators.

On Friday, Atlantic Beach police issued a news release on the “sad occasion” just after the second anniversary of the murder of Randy Miller.

In the past, police said they thought an Infiniti sedan was possibly involved. But now they say the suspects were likely in a silver 2013-2017 Volkswagen CC, which is similar to a Passat but has a lower roofline.

Police have also said that car break-in suspects were very possibly involved. A photo released by Atlantic Beach police showed a suspect caught on video trying to break into a Jeep under a beach house the same morning as the killing.

“Three individuals were observed breaking into vehicles shortly before the murder,” Atlantic Beach police said.

The information from police on Friday also said the reward in the case was up to $75,000. The reward started at $30,000 but increased last year to $55,000.

Officials said anyone with information should contact the Atlantic Beach Police Department or the State Bureau of Investigation at 919-300-6860 with anonymous tips. People with information can also call Crime Stoppers at (252)-726-4636 to remain anonymous.

I have not heard of anyone called Campbell, but I know that the Hawaiian sailor, Brian Caldwell, who briefly held the record for the youngest solo circumnavigator in 1996 (with stops), on his Contessa 26, , later announced he was commencing a non-stop solo circumnavigation on a NA29 but did not get underway.  Almost certainly the same boat because there were only a few of this production model built.  Perhaps this is who you were remembering, Jim?  About 10 years ago, Brian sailed a Vega 27 across the Pacific to Australia, between yacht deliveries, in company with   then being owned by a friend of his.  Sadly, both boats were badly damaged in a cyclone the following summer in Queensland, and their voyages were abandoned.

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy reveals plan after Kursk invasion; more than 50 killed in double missile strike

Two missiles have killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds in a city in central Ukraine, one of the deadliest attacks by Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken about his intentions after Kyiv launched an incursion into Russia last month.

We reported earlier on Voldymyr Zelenskyy's comments that Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold territory it has seized in its Kursk invasion (see 18.17 post).

Asked about the surprise invasion in an interview with our US partner network   NBC News , Mr Zelenskyy said the operation was aimed at restoring Ukraine's "territorial integrity".

He also said Kyiv did not "need" Russian land - but he remained silent on what the next steps would be.

Watch a clip from the interview here...

People are still trapped under the rubble of a building destroyed by a Russian attack in Poltava, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

Rescue efforts are ongoing and rubble is still being cleared, he said in his nightly address.

The Ukrainian president confirmed at least 51 people have died and 271 are injured as a result of one of the deadliest attacks of the war so far.

"I am grateful to all the rescuers, doctors, medical nurses and all the Poltava residents who have joined in to help, donated blood, and who provide support," he said.

"We know that there are people under the rubble of the destroyed building. Everything is being done to save as many lives as possible."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posted a video of his meeting with the UN's nuclear chief Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kyiv today.

Mr Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met the Ukrainian president ahead of his visit to the Zaporizhzhia power plant, where he said the situation was "very fragile".

"The station is again on the verge of being on a blackout. We've had eight of those in the past. A blackout [means] no power; no power, no cooling. No cooling, then maybe you have a disaster," he told reporters before the meeting.

Mr Zelenskyy said his talks with Mr Grossi were focused "on the issue of strengthening nuclear safety in Ukraine, ensuring constant monitoring not only of the state of NPPs (nuclear power plants), but also of substations that are critical for their operation".

Russia has launched a new military-focused school course as it looks to prepare teenagers "mentally and physically" for service, the UK Ministry of Defence has said.

In its latest intelligence update, the ministry said the course for 15 to 18-year-olds is part of a new programme called "Foundations of Security and Defence of the Motherland".

Over 11 modules, students will cover a range of topics including "combined arms combat and small arms familiarisation", it said.

"The programme seeks to create and will likely result in a more militarised and security focused society," the MoD said.

It added that the new youth strategy in Russia was aimed primarily at preparing "pre-conscription age teenagers mentally and physically for military service".

Russia has also increased the number of summer camps for children which involve various military activities, according to the MoD.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the deputy head of the Ukrainian president's office, Rostyslav Shurma, according to a decree on the presidential website.

Ukrainian media outlets had been reporting that the dismissal of Mr Shurma, who took up the role in November 2021, was being considered by parliament.

The decree does not explain why he was sacked.

Meanwhile, Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's deputy prime minister responsible for European integration, has resigned, according to Ukraine's parliamentary speaker.

Her resignation comes after Ukraine's strategic industries, justice and environment ministers also tendered their resignation earlier today (see 15.37 post).

The major shakeup of Ukraine's government comes at a critical time during the war with Russia, and ahead of Mr Zelenskyy's visited to the US this month where he hopes to present a "victory plan" to Joe Biden.

The Ukrainian president said changes were being undertaken to ensure Ukraine had the strengthened government it needed.

"Autumn will be extremely important. Our state institutions must be structured in such a way so that Ukraine can achieve all the results it needs," he said.

"For this, we must strengthen some areas of the government and changes in its makeup have been prepared. There will also be changes in the (president's) office."

A volunteer has recalled how he knew "something evil" had happened as he heard the explosions caused by Russia's missile strike on Poltava today.

Yevheniy Zemskyy, who headed to the area of the attack to offer help, said: "I heard explosions... I was at home at that time. When I left the house, I realized that it was something evil and something bad, I was scared."

Mr Zemskyy said he was worried about the children and other residents of the city.

"That's why we are here today to help our city in any way we can," he said.

According to the prosecutor general's office of Ukraine, at least 51 people were killed in the ballistic missile strike by Russian forces earlier this afternoon. More than 200 people have been injured.

Regional head Philip Pronin called the attack  "a great tragedy" and announced three days of mourning starting tomorrow.

Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold Russian territory captured in its surprise invasion of the border region of Kursk last month, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told our US partner network NBC News .

The Ukrainian president said in an exclusive interview that holding the territory was integral to his "victory plan" to force Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and bring an end to the war

He said he would present the proposal to international partners, including the US.

Appearing to confirm Ukrainian troops would eventually withdraw, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine didn't "need their land".

"We don't want to bring our Ukrainian way of life there," he said.

The president declined to say whether Ukraine planned to try and take more Russian territory.

"With all respect, I can't speak about it, I think the success is very close to surprise," he said.

Ukrainian forces crossed the border into Kursk on 6 August in a shock attack which saw them seize a series of villages and take hundreds of prisoners. Moscow vowed to retaliate.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has urged Canadian Prime Minister to "strengthen advocacy" for Ukraine's allies to allow it to strike deep inside Russia.

The Ukrainian president said he spoke with Mr Trudeau over the phone today, with the two leaders also discussing the ongoing rescue operation in Poltova.

Kyiv has long been calling for the ability to conduct long-range strikes against military targets in Russia.

Mr Zelenskyy said yesterday that Western partners should not only allow the attacks - but also supply the weapons for such strikes to happen.

US officials said Washington was close to a deal to hand Kyiv long-range cruise missiles that could reach deep into Russia - but it would face several months' wait for them as it works through technical issues.

The inclusion of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) in a weapons package is expected to be announced this autumn, three sources said.

Mongolia's government has given an explanation as to why Vladimir Putin was not arrested when he landed in the country for an official visit.

The Russian president arrived in Mongolia yesterday on his first visit to a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since it issued a warrant for his arrest nearly 18 months ago on charges of war crimes.

ICC members are expected to detain suspects if an arrest warrant has been issued - but there's no sign that Mongolia will heed the demand.

Now, the Mongolian government has said in a statement to Politico that it was difficult to arrest the Russian president due to its position of energy dependence on Moscow.

"Mongolia imports 95% of its petroleum products and over 20% of electricity from our immediate neighborhood, which have previously suffered interruption for technical reasons. This supply is critical to ensure our existence and that of our people," a spokesperson said.

They added that Mongolia has "always maintained a policy of neutrality in all its diplomatic relations".

Ukrainian service personnel were killed when Russian forces struck a military institute in Poltova, according to officials.

Ukraine's ground forces said on Telegram that they were probing whether enough had been done to protect the personnel at the educational facility which was struck by a ballistic missile today.

They did not say how many people at the facility had died.

Safety measures will be strengthened at other military facilities, they said.
