JV 43 : Judel/Vrolijk has Class 40 built for cruising

Jochen Rieker

 ·  18.04.2023

Reminiscent of a whale from the front, but more of a black marlin. The deck bevel gives the scow bow design bounce and momentum

When you see the plans and computer animations of the JV 43, you can't help but think of an ocean racer. And that's not entirely wrong. After all, what has taken shape on Antoine Cardin's computer in Bremerhaven shows an almost twin-like relationship to a modern Class 40: the hull is flat-bottomed, the bow extremely full-bodied, the T-keel slim and deep, the rig with plenty of drop aft, the cockpit protected in the forward section by the extended coachroof, the twin rudders retractable.

In reality, however, the design is merely a derivative of the most successful offshore class of the last 20 years. The boat, which was built in a small series, is a hybrid that is also intended to be suitable for longer offshore trips. From the outside, there is little to suggest this, at most the superstructure extended towards the foredeck and the two narrow hull and cabin windows on either side, which no longer exist in the latest generation of the Class 40.

The biggest challenge is hidden below deck

The biggest difference - and also "the biggest challenge during development", as designer Antoine Cardin from Judel/Vrolijk & Co says - lies hidden below deck. The JV 43 is the fastest performance cruiser of its size imaginable - with the exception of performance-orientated multihulls such as the JV 43. Dragonfly 40 or Rapido 40.

In the saloon, of which one can certainly speak here, there is a large seating area arranged around the extremely forward engine box. Aft of this is the central navigation area, with the wet room to port in front of the main bulkhead and the galley to starboard. The owner's cabin in the foredeck, which extends over almost a third of the entire length of the boat, is also huge thanks to the scow-bow design and offers a generously sized double berth with plenty of storage space and room to move around.

Maintaining the level of the Class 40

Even more astonishing than the large volume and the sheer, yet seaworthy and impressive design of the superstructure is its weight. "The target was 250 kilograms," says Antoine Cardin. "That's the only way we can stay roughly at Class 40 level in terms of performance."

He pays strict attention to adherence to the limit, even if it is of course ultimately up to the owners to decide how much moderation they apply. Anything that improves comfort on board but reduces the potential of the design needs to be carefully weighed up.

For example, dispensing with the hull windows and an inverter - nowadays a matter of course for cruising yachts in this size and price category - can compensate for the additional weight of a gimbal-mounted cooker with oven. The omission of doors, even if they are made of foam sandwich, can make way for a hot water boiler or a heating system. And so on. Only one thing is not possible: everything.

The key to a foreseeably breathtaking sailing experience

It is the almost irritating radicality of the approach compared to large-scale production that makes the boat so unique. What sounds like relentless asceticism in a yacht that will cost between 800,000 and 900,000 euros ready to sail is actually the key to a foreseeably breathtaking sailing experience. The technical data alone shows this.

They make the JV 43 a solitaire on the market. At just under 5.2 tonnes, it displaces just half as much as the new First 44 - and still has a good 20 percent more sail area on the wind. Her sail carrying capacity of 6.45 tonnes is only exceeded by the ClubSwan 36 which is also being built in series, but is designed purely as a regatta yacht and has no extension. With a value of 6.5, modern Class 40s such as the Pogo S4 are only slightly higher than the Judel/Vrolijk design.

For the Bremerhaven design office, otherwise better known for series-produced ships and Grand Prix racing yachts such as the TP52, the order was very welcome. By working on this ambitious project, the engineers can show how broad their portfolio is, how individually they are able to respond to unusual owner requests and that they also feel at home in the domain of shorthanded offshore sailing, which is actually a French domain.

JV 43 - a hybrid sailing yacht

On the one hand, the design is reminiscent of the early Class 40 boats such as the first Pogo 40 or the Akilaria RC1, which were also divided into sections at the time and not completely open like today's designs, whose raw "interior" consists solely of stringers and ring frames.

On the other hand, Antoine Cardin has incorporated all modern findings into the hull design - including the scow-like bow section and the slightly concave moulded underwater hull in the aft area, which is intended to reduce water resistance when gliding at speed. The design also has a relatively large keel step and a small wetted surface, all of which are state-of-the-art features in the Class 40.

The initiative came from two Hamburg owners, both experienced ocean sailors, who had been in dialogue with Judel/Vrolijk for some time about a fast, ocean-going vessel. Together with Antoine Cardin, they agreed on three basic premises that perfectly summarise the design: "Speed, Simplicity, Space". Initially, they only commissioned a study, then the complete design.

Goal: best possible all-round performance

The hull shape was developed on the basis of 15 comparison models, all analysed with the latest CFD program. The aim was to achieve the best possible all-round performance. This applies not least to the upwind properties, which are otherwise not the paragon of modern offshore designs. "Unlike the latest generation of the Class 40, the JV 43 still has slight rudder pressure on the cross," says Cardin. And this is despite the fact that the mast only leans 5 degrees aft instead of the usual 8 to 10 degrees in this class. Although no super-tight turning angles are to be expected, the boat sails most efficiently in a "low-and-fast mode" - 5 to 6 degrees lower than other performance yachts, but 1 to 1.5 knots faster.

The deck layout is optimised for a small crew and short distances and offers several seating positions as well as protection from spray under the aft-facing coachroof. There are five winches on the central trim console. All lines and halyards run back into the cockpit area so that manoeuvres can be carried out efficiently and safely.

The carbon rig from Axxon measures 80 centimetres more than a Class 40 mast. The forestay is made of carbon, the shrouds of rod and the backstays of Dyneema. The sail plan is similar to that of an Imoca with foresails, space wind and reaching sails, most of which can be furled. The non-overlapping jib measures 55 square metres. For strong winds there is a removable staysail, for more open courses a jib top, a code zero as well as a top and a fractional gennaker. An inventory that ranges from 5 to over 40 knots and is very versatile.

Sailing yacht is manufactured by Oceantec in Slovenia

The boat is being built at Oceantec, a highly capable shipyard in Jesenice, Slovenia, which specialises in ambitious projects of this kind. The hull, deck and structure of build number one have already been finalised and the interior is well advanced. The yacht is due to take to the water for the first time in the northern Adriatic in June; the sailing tests, which we will accompany, will start immediately afterwards.

Meanwhile, construction number two is already maturing, albeit a few months behind schedule. And that's not the end of it. The design and moulds are also available to other owners for whom a Pogo 44 is too heavy but a Class 40 is too sharp. This reduces the costs, but above all the lead time. After all, the basic concept is already in place.

The concept of a “cruise-regatta” boat can be interpreted in various ways, with designs that are sometimes skewed toward one of the two worlds they represent and sometimes more balanced. Well-known design firm Judel Vrolijk&Co , which has worked with Hanse, Cantiere del Pardo and other major brands over the years, has launched a soon-to-be-realized project reinterpreting the cruise-regatta theme, the JV 43 for the Slovenian shipyard Oceantec .

JV 43 cockpit

JV 43, a longer Class 40 with a comfortable interior

“Using the latest studies on offshore hulls, we opted for a solution that is very similar in concept to a Class 40, but with a longer hull to better accommodate the necessary interior and equipment,” the design firm says.

jv 43 sailboat

The deck layout is designed for small crew maneuvering, and the cockpit is sheltered from the deckhouse and its continuation just as it is in Class 40. The cockpit is designed around 2 inward entry ports and has a central winch where all halyards are deferred, out of a total of 5 winches. All lines and halyards return to the cockpit area, so maneuvering is possible within a largely water-protected space.

JV 43 – Innovative Interior

jv 43 sailboat

The living area is designed around the engine compartment, which is positioned in the middle of the boat to keep the center of gravity low, and serves as the navigational station and saloon table. On each side we have sleeping places, foldable, for sleeping or storage. Moving forward from the living area is an open-plan kitchen equipped with a cooktop and pull-out refrigerator-box. On the left side is an enclosed toilet room. The forward compartment is dedicated to the master cabin with ample stowage.

jv 43 sailboat

The water lines are clearly inspired by the Class 40 world, with double rudder, T-keel, and generous water ballasts to have mobile ballast in small crew. Generous but not extreme is the aft edge, while the hull is not totally flat but has a slightly soft curvature to lessen upwind impacts. In the bow, the volumes are almost scow-like, but without going as far as the extreme solutions of racing openers.

Racing Fluke: JV43 by Ocean Tec

  • November 9th, 2023
  • Yacht Refit

Last week another set of pictures published by Slovenian shipyard Ocean Tec catched my attention: A brand new sleek racing boat? A high-performance cruiser? German design bureau Judel/Vrolijk realized a hell of a fast rocket meant to travel fast in planning mode but to offer at least some cruising comfort for the very ambitious sailor: The JV43 touched the water.

jv 43 sailboat

Judging from the pictures, this yacht incorporates latest findings in hydrodynamic hull shaping, sports a very wide bow section like we´ve seen in latest IMOCA or Class 40-yachts and looks damn fast. I immediately called up at Ocean Tec and Gaber Bregant, owner of the shipyard, transferred me to Luka Kepec who run the project. Yesterday, very late, we talked about this fascinating new boat.

Talking to Luka Kepec of Ocean Tec

NO FRILLS SAILING.com | Lars Reisberg: “Luka, thanks for sharing your precious time to answer my questions. Tell me, when did Ocean Tec become involved in actually building the JV43? Did the owner who had Judel/Vrolijk designed the boat want to have it build by your company in the first place?”

Luka Kepec | Ocean Tec: “You are welcome, Lars! Actually, it is the other way around: The designer will normally propose the builder he deems suitable to live up to the project´s demand. Maybe two builders. The proposals are then discussed and a final decision is taken together with the owner. In this case, we had been approached by Judel/Vrolijk. Later in the process we also got to meet the owners as well and finally became the shipyard realizing this project.”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “How can we imagine is a project like this done? Are the plans delivered completely finished by the designers when you guys come in or does Ocean Tec have a saying in the design or at least details, like structural things?”

Luka Kepec: “Not at all, we join the process in a pretty early stage, I´d say. At the start we only got a very basic design brief, some preliminary drawings, a sail plan, some interior layout-sketches and the preliminary specifications. This is just enough to work out a quotation and a first preliminary build schedule. Only after a build contract is in place the designer will start the proper design process. This includes engineering and all of the detailing. It’s a multiple way process where all parties are involved, and all solutions should be mutually agreed upon.”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “What are some of the specialties of the JV43 building-wise? Any new materials, production techniques used?”

Luka Kepec: “At Ocean Tec we only utilize latest state-of-the-art materials and processes. This boat is build by using a three-stage vacuum infusion of e-glass and Corecell foam sandwich composite. This is for example the same material we use in the latest Class 40 racing boats for example. As the weight control is one of the most important aspects of this project, we as builder were forced to reach the limits of the vacuum infusion technology to fulfil this challenge.”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Can you outline the principle production process of this boat? How was the timing in general for this boat?”

Luka Kepec: “As mentioned, a three-stage vacuum infusion as principal technology and strict weight control. For the JV43 we plan to have a one year building time. Actually, for this boat, we secured two orders for two owners, which made us double our efforts but also utilize some efficiency-gains.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Did Ocean Tec build the keel as well? If not, where and how did the appendages have been made?”

Luka Kepec: “We do not make the keel. The sleep keel fin was built by Irons Brothers in the United Kimgdom and the bulb by the Italian specialist Fonderia SAT. JV43´s keel is made out of high strength steel with composite fairing connected to a lead bulb. The boat will have a draft of three meters in the end. Of course, we did the composite fairing and the keel assembly .”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “During construction works, did Judel/Vrolijk or the owner have special milestones or sections after which they visited the shipyard to check the boat´s progress?”

Luka Kepec: “Oh yes, of course! There are various milestones during the building process. Those are always agreed upon by the designers, the shipyard and partners. For us as the builder, we very much appreciate the involvement of the designer and the owners. This is very important as it is a complex project and simply requires the intense involvement of all parties. Especially because usually the development and engineering goes “hand in hand” with the build process. And important decisions are taken throughout the entire build process.”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “How many people are involved in building a boat like the JV43 at Ocean Tec from how many departments?”

Luka Kepec: “For our part of the project a team of ten people was involved more or less on a daily basis. Plus, some works like electric installations, electronics installations were outsourced to specialists. As you can imagine, every department has a role in the project. Most important of course the R&D, but also the purchase, finance and most importantly the human resources department. Managing people these days is the key …”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “I understand that the boat is now fully rigged and in the water, taken over by the owner. Is the shipyard further involved in the testing and fitting of this boat?”

Luka Kepec: “The boat is at the moment in the middle of the sea trails program. She will be fully handed over to the clients after these trails are successfully completed.”

jv 43 sailboat

NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “Although being a custom one-off, would it be possible for more people to get a JV43 built by your company?”

Luka Kepec: “Oh yes, with pleasure! As you know, we are currently building two identical boats. As the molds are made from wood with MDF, the life span of those molds is limited of course. But we could build a few more, maybe 4 or 5. We definitely would love to build two more at least … so if anyone is interested in receiving a high-performance racer with cruising capabilities, feel free to get in touch.”

Luka, thanks so much for your time, all the best for this awesome project and see you around!

Description

The JV43 is designed to push the limit in offshore sailing for a wide range of client profiles.

Using the latest development in open sea performance and handling design, the solution is very similar to a class 40 concept with a longer hull to better accommodate necessary interior and equipment. The hull shape solution is a development from 15 comparison models, all analysed using our latest RANS Code CFD tool.

The deck layout is optimized for short crew handling and offers multiple seating positions and protection. The cockpit is designed around 2 entry doors and a central pit console resulting in a 5 winches arrangement. All lines and halyards are running back into the cockpit area so manoeuvres are possible inside a protected space.

Above deck, the rig and sail plan is optimized for offshore operation use and rating system. The aim is to reduce all possible performance gaps with the use of flying-reaching sails and staysails. That setup helps the boat behaviour in heavy sea state conditions to keep the boat balanced and reduce nose diving behaviour.

The living area is designed around the engine box, which serves as a navigation station and saloon table. On each side, we have large seating bunks, foldable for sleeping or storage use. Forward of the living area is an open space galley equipped with a cooking stove and removable cooling box. On the port side, an enclosed toilet room is located. The forward compartment is dedicated to the owner´s cabin with large storage.

For better control and safety, the boat is equipped with lifting twin rudders. The keel is made out of high-strength steel with composite fairing connected to a lead bulb at 3.0 meters draft. The use of 750L water ballast divided into 3 tanks each side allows greater performance and weight reduction for the concept. The water ballast is operated from the cockpit.

ClubSwan 43 First Look: A Spicy and Seriously Appealing Cruiser-Racer

  • Toby Hodges
  • September 11, 2024

The ClubSwan 43, a contemporary multi-mode cruiser-racer is one of 2024’s most exciting launches. Toby Hodges went to the Finnish yard for the first sea trials... sort of...

The ClubSwan 43 with people sitting on her port side

Product Overview

Clubswan 43, price as reviewed:.

What does a genuine cruiser-racer look like today? Spicy and seriously appealing if we take Swan’s latest model as an example. Granted, the dark brown water surrounding the ClubSwan 43 (CS43) during this first photoshoot doesn’t quite sell it, but believe me, the lines and details of Juan Kouyoumdjian’s latest rocketship really does get the heart rate spiking. This is one slippery weapon, potentially as stunning to sail as her fiery looks promise.

And it’s rare to find a new yacht that properly fulfills a dual-purpose role. Admittedly this design is skewed more towards racing, which will likely be the focus of most owners. But like its predecessor, the CS42, it features a fitted interior for occasional fair weather cruising – the modern shape of the new boat helps provide large volumes below decks (for a race boat) in a three-cabin layout.

Swan markets the ClubSwan 43 as ‘the perfect crossover’ because it targets three briefs: one-design events, handicap regatta ratings, and sports cruising. Some readers will remember it began life on the drawing board a couple of years ago as a 41-footer. But when the ORC band limits changed, Swan changed with it, extending this to a 43 as the Finnish boatbuilders wanted to be in the middle of Cat A for this international rating system.

Sea trials from the yard – but with race sails fitted and a hiking crew this time.

Sea trials from the yard – but with race sails fitted and a hiking crew this time.

“ORC is getting bigger every year so this was our focus,” Nautor’s CEO Giovanni Pomati explained as we attended the launch and first sea trials from Swan’s Pietersaari yard.

Pomati described how Swan clients love to race in Nautor’s one-design circuit but also want to compete in high-profile regattas such as the Copa del Rey or Admiral’s Cup, and have the option of then cruising with their families. But he admits this is a mighty tall order: “As Juan K says – ‘you want a pig with five legs!’”

ClubSwan 43’s design versatility

“For me the way all these different aspects between performance, interior/cruising ability, and where the boat sits in terms of its performance to rating makes it a successful and beautiful sailboat,” muses Kouyoumdjian.

The visionary Argentinian naval architect has given the ClubSwan range a formidable boost since the CS50 launched in 2016. That was followed by the CS36 , the CS125 Skorpios (both of which have foils), the CS80 My Song, and now the CS28 and this CS43 both launching this season. He says the CS43’s hull is 500-700kg lighter yet 1.5m longer than its typical competitor.

Tidy deck layout and angles on the ClubSwan 43

Note the tidy deck layout and angles – top ergonomics

A novel feature, designed to suit those owners optimising their boat for ORC racing, is that the keel has a pocket in the top of the bulb to adjust the ballast without changing the whole keel (see page 84). This L-shaped keel is very thin at the leading edge, a high aspect shape to provide lift going upwind, and the design team calculates this will create much less leeway than a T-keel.

Another clever addition is to be found in the rig. The standard carbon mast is heavily raked with running backstays and a contemporary square-top mainsail for optimum performance in one-design racing. However, the masthead crane can be changed out to use a pinhead mainsail and fixed backstay, which is more practical when cruising. This fitting attaches with two pins, so you don’t need to de-rig the boat and can just hoist someone aloft.

“We spent a lot of time to simplify like this to swap from one configuration to another,” says head of sports activities Federico Michetti, who spearheaded the CS43 project.

Admittedly, I find the lines very cool indeed, with the flared aft sections, reverse sheer, chamfered coachroof and modern deck angles setting off an appealing, aggressive and sporty tone.

Best performance yachts: Our pick of the top options

Good and bad surprises

Why have I harked on about the design and concept before describing what it’s like to sail? Because there’s an anti-climax looming… the first boat hadn’t quite been finished in time to give it a full test during our yard visit in June – we only managed a quick introductory sail, hence why this is only a ‘First Look’.

Ours were the very first sea trials of the first hull to launch. Although Swan had tried to finish as much of the interior as possible, it was certainly not complete (the aft cabins had no doors, the heads were unfinished and the sole boards were yet to be fitted). The bigger issue was that the sails had been held up in customs in Denmark, so our delivery sails comprised a pinhead main and a high-cut storm jib. Although I pleaded to borrow another yacht’s gennaker, the bowsprit still needed tackline fairleads and a bobstay fitting. So white Dacron sails only it was.

A joy to helm: the CS43 should slice to weather with narrow wetted surface and a keel which minimises leeway

A joy to helm: the CS43 should slice to weather with narrow wetted surface and a keel which minimises leeway

Yet despite the equivalent of furnishing a carbon superbike with mountain bike wheels, we still had a delicious taster. We sailed in the tight confines of the channel to try and harness a confused wind as the light sea breeze began to stifle the offshores. This gave us a tricky yet fun mix of angles with winds gusting up from 8 to 17 knots.

And what a feeling this yacht gives you on the wheel – super direct and smooth! The Jefa steering linkage has a short run aft to a carbon stock and vinylester rudder, a deep, high aspect blade (to match the keel fin), which felt beautifully light and responsive.

Appetite whetter

The ClubSwan 43 proved noticeably quick to accelerate. We averaged 7+ knots upwind at 40° true in 12 knots (another half knot if you bear off 5-8°). Of course, the numbers are somewhat irrelevant with the sails we had and with no offwind options (indeed the polars suggest it should clock 8 knots in such conditions in one-design mode), but the feel and spark were very evident and pointed to genuinely potent capabilities.

Toby on the helm (with Dacron high cut jib).

Toby on the helm (with Dacron high cut jib).

While it has generous beam carried aft, look at the flare to the aft quarters: it leaves only a narrow wetted surface. It’s a slippery shape that should start planing when reaching in around 12 knots true wind. It will want a full hiking crew to establish how lethal the CS43 is upwind, but my impression is that intelligent use of crew weight, both lateral and fore and aft, could make a telling difference.

The wheel pedestals are twisted, which forces a double take at first, but proved effective as they’re at the ideal angle to grip when heeled and gain the helmsman space. The mainsheet trimmer has a comfortable space between the wheel and German-led mainsheet winch. Traveller control lines are led here to hand via camcleats on the central footbrace, although the endless line joining them can cause a tripping hazard.

The deck design and ergonomics are superb. The angles help to both give the CS43 a modern feel and work in a practical sense. For example, the chamfers on the coachroof make for a comfortable boat to sit up on the side deck or to walk on at heel, while a hiking crew will be grateful for the angled toerail join.

Michetti is particularly happy with these ergonomics, especially those that help crew to feel safe at heel. The SeaDek foam decking in the cockpit is comfortable and grippy underfoot, the moulded-in non-slip decks effective, and there is a sturdy central longitudinal footbrace for crewmembers in the cockpit.

The winch layout is also well considered, particularly for racing. The coachroof winches have free spinning bases for cross-sheeting, and the runner winches are neatly set into the decks, again on an angle. The runners blocks are quite far inboard on the transom, but Michetti explains that the boom will never be eased too far with the apparent wind angles it will race at. The jib sheets lead through transverse tracks to give a very tight sheeting angle, while the running rigging runs through slanted grooves in the coachroof.

A lot of experience and forethought has gone into these details.

Keel pocket drawing

Keel pocket allows simple change of ballast weight

More clues to its raceboat focus include having the main and jib halyards on locks, which helps reduce mast compression, and the numbered gauges on the foam decking for the traveller. Making full use of the reverse sheer, the foredeck ramps down into a well to make the forestay attachment as low as possible.

The spacious cockpit has low backrests and short benches. In cruising mode there’s the option for a removable table and box seats to join the cockpit benches. A windlass can be fitted in the anchor locker and the bowsprit can be swapped with two bolts for a shorter version that includes twin anchor rollers.

Clean styling

Below decks has a light, open feel, with good volumes and large aft cabins. Lucio Micheletti has done a good job with the minimalist interior styling and it is more cruising yacht than stripped-back raceboat. That said, the yard has gone to painstaking lengths to ensure it can be stripped without ruining the boat. Cork panels are used on the hull sides, for example, for noise insulation but they’re Velcroed-on so can be removed for racing.

The forward berth with two pillows and blinds in the long, thin windows

There will be an option to close off the forward berth

In fact, pretty much anything that can be removable is, including the saloon table, the aft bed boards, the water tank bladders, even the headlining. This amounts to over 200kg in furniture and fittings.

The concept of stripping a luxury yacht may seem baffling but Michetti explains how competitive boats racing in ORC today all do this and are ‘bastardised’ with fake interiors and furniture. Hence it makes sense to design-in as many removable fittings as possible. For Swan’s one-design racing programme, yachts will have to have their interiors fitted. So this is a truly transformable model.

It’s also a practical wash down, wipe clean type interior, so should be able to handle spinnaker drops without ruining the finish. A string drop system can be fitted, led back to a block in the aft cabin so you can suck a kite in through the forward hatch. All deck hatch drainage is outside via neat wells on deck and it’s a deck-stepped mast, so the interior should stay dry.

The hatch on the forward watertight bulkhead opens to access the forepeak and chain locker. There will be an option to close off the forward berth with sliding doors, and Swan was still deciding whether to add headlinings in the aft cabins (which will also have fabric wardrobes). The CS43 is built using vacuum-infused vinylester with carbon reinforcements, a high modulus carbon Axxon rig, and a carbon bowsprit.

The ClubSwan 43 costs a whopping €820,000, yet the first three were signed before this first hull launched (the larger sister CS50 is €600,000 more and costs more to run, yet has sold nearly 30). So while this just might be one of the coolest new yachts I’ve sailed, for that exotic price it needs to be near perfect. And I can’t tell you if it is... yet. I can only say it’s got huge potential. Its pricing will render it a product for the lucky few, but that’s buying into the exclusive, unrivalled world of Swan’s regatta and one-design circuits. The Nautor badge will also carry a lot of weight in terms of aftersales value. Our sail was a mere amuse-bouche, when I’d have loved to try the full taster menu. While it was frustrating for Swan and us not to be able to sail it to its potential, I can say that there are very, very few yachts that feel this good on the wheel without even being set up properly! I eagerly await a re-run.

comparison of the 423 vs the 43

  • Thread starter Hanrahan1

  • Ask A Beneteau Owner

We are looking to purchase either an oceanis 423 or an oceanis 43 and wondered if we could get some comment on which would be the better choice. My wife likes the cockpit of the 43 but I like the robustness and traditional wood interior of the 423. We intend to use the boat for the islands and I am an experienced ocean sailor but I am only familiar with these boats through yachtworld. Could any one offer some opinion on the differences. Many thanks, John & Terry

Mike B

I assume the 43 you're referring to is the newer model, which we have a 2008. Funny but a friend has an 04 423 and we raft up together and do comparisions on the two models. I'll do my best to share the differences as I see them. The 43 has a 13.5' beam which is carried well aft. It's what gives the boat a roomy feel both in the cockpit and down below. On deck the 43 has twin wheels and a huge cockpit. The 423 has a smaller cockpit and less seating area. We spend a lot of time topside so we love the extra room. Down below the 423 does have the darker more traditional look. It's warm and cozy. The nav table is dedicated where the 43 you sit on the end of the port salon seat. If you use the nav table the 423 wins. If not then the 43 does with the extra cushion length. The 43 has lighter colored wood. Ours is two toned with the majority of the wood in a light color and the trim in the darker wood. Definately more modern/euro looking than the 423. Something you either you like or don't. The 43 salon is squared off vs the rounded style of the 423. I think the 43 has a more airy open feel down below. Some of this may be impacted by the eyebrow ports. The galley in the 423 is to STBD and the 43's is to Port, both tucked in next the companion way. The 43's fridge is manufactured unit where the 423's is built in by Beneteau. The 43 has separate compressors for the fridge and freezer. I believe, but wont swear to it, the 423 has a single compressor which should equate to less power consumption when on the hook. I think the galley in the 43 may have a tad more storage. Both boats have two heads and cabins. The 43 has a separate shower area in the aft head. The 423 has much nicer forward cabin with lots of nice wood. It's the one draw back of the 43 and still something I wish was different. Decorating helps but only to a certain degree. I think the 43's salon is a bit roomier, especially at the base of the companion way. Both boats have numerous hatches and ports for great ventilation. As I mentioned before the 43 has the long cabin windows. The 43 has built in hatch screens and shades. Pull one direction and you have shade. Pull the other and you have screens. Pull them apart and you have free flowing light and air. B did a very nice job on them. Access to water heater, pumps, valves is about the same on both boats. I know the 43 has the thruhulls tagged with their functional names. The DC panel on the 423 has breakers for most every function. The 43's are grouped resulting in far fewer switches. I thought it would be an issue but in fact so far it's not been. Back up on deck the 423 has a full rig where the 43's is a 9/10ths fractional. The 43's mast air draft is 60', not counting the windex, wind instruments, antenna, etc. Still very ICW friendly. I believe the 423's air draft to be 58'. The 423 has a double anchor roller versus the 43's single. Not an issue so far since I keep a Fortress as a backup anchor. The 43 has a fairly flat hull shape where the 423 is more rounded. IMO the 43 is the faster of the two boats. Keep her flat with no more than 10-5 degrees of heel and she'll fly. Hard on the wind (15kts give or take a bit) I've seen speed thru the water of 8.5 to 9.0kts. With wind on the beam it jumps to 9.0 to 9.5, even touching 10 in the puffs. Both boats will handle the heavy chop the Chesapeake throws at you. We made the run from Cape May NJ to Baltimore this summer and ran up Delaware Bay in 20-25kt following winds and seas 5-7'. We were motor sailing at apx 2200 rpms with the main partially set and full head sail. The main's outhaul car had an issue or we'd had run 100% sail. We averaged slightly better than 8kts and the boat handled like a dream. I cant say enough on how pleased I am with her performance. Not to mention her good looks. We get a lot of compliments on her lines. Well that's the highlights. Let me know if you have any questions. Mike

comparison of 43 to 423 Mike, I joined this group yesterday and if your response is any indication of the quality of membership then I am really glad I did. Many thanks for taking your time and considerable knowledge on both boats, very much appreciated. John

Deadhead

Clearly, Mike is retired and has plenty of time to craft a very well thought out and presented response!

Re: comparison of 43 to 423 John, my pleasure and let me know if you have any questions. Probably best to PM me if you do. Mike

Re: comparison of 43 to 423 Yea Deadhead nothing to do but reply to forum threads. That and remodel a couple of bathrooms, paint bedrooms...........LOL Mike

With added dimensions in comfort, the 43 readdresses Carver's popular en suite cabin concept to offer enhanced privacy features while keeping common ground for entertaining. Two, quiet stateroom retreats remain separated by the entire length of the yacht, with a spacious shared living area stretched out between them. Throughout the intelligent floor plan you?ll find Carver?s signature talent for cleverly addressing stowage. There?s abundant storage at every turn, all creatively positioned to maximize space and enhance onboard livability. Exterior design features also rate brilliantly. The 43?s innovative window styling is both striking and practical, letting in desired light and offering great views. And the 43?s decking versatility provides often-needed docking options.

Boat: Valiant 40
today, including a Mason 44 that has to be the cleanest, newest looking I've ever seen ("new" ones included) even though she's over 20 years old. Amazing.

I've looked at all the numbers, and done as much reading as I can, but I'd like some feedback from those who've actually sailed one. What were the conditions and how did she behave? Any issues beyond what one would expect from a 27,000 lbs full keeled with 900 sq. ft. Of sail area?

Thanks,

JRM

Boat: SAnta Cruz 27
. A nice design and pretty . Not quite the performance of our 456, but you can say that for most cruising . Of course, with a boat of that age, its all about how well its been maintained. We also had friends with a Mason 43, which seemed to be quite a bit less roomy than the 44.

to about 20 years ago, which is when I owned and regularly sailed a 44. I didnt think it sailed as well as the , but I remember it as a very well built boat. The quality and the beauty were top notch. The only thing I didnt like about the boat was having to step up to the level to go to the offset . The aft and the aft made for an awkward entrance (unsafe?) to the . It was like the old Choey Lee 40s. Over all a very nice boat. ____Grant.

to and the each year. It's not the fastest thing I have sailed and it's not the slowest but it may be the most . It may be cramped down below but I consider it comfortably snug, an asset in sailing. I regularly sail it handed as my wife no longer likes the long offsore passages and I have run out of freinds and relatives and asdds for crew aren't always productive. Two and a half years ago we were cought in a gale about 150 miles offshore, we ran with it for a day and a half. I don't know how strong the winds got because the masthead unit was out at the time but we were pulling 8+ knots fully reefed with a . It seems to come alive when it looses sight of land. The only drawback is the 6'6" can make one nervous in the .

Boat: Boereal 44
sailed a Mason 44 across the pacific for a couple years and enjoyed the boat. She is as as they get for a boat that age, sailed her in some of the worst the 2008 Pacific season offered up and never once felt in . The Mason44 on and below is designed to go offshore, her came from the era where a boat was well thought out. The longer you have her the more you see how the put a lot of thought into her. There is a big difference between the 43 and the 44. As on all cruising boats there are things you will not like, for us it was the 1988 Yanmar/turbo 55. We changed it to a new,2007 55HP which was about 1/3 smaller in size and a lot easier to on . The Mason tankage is grand, 180 gallons and 200 gallons. Unlike a Hinkley or a Morris the Mason was designed to sail the pacific, 98 lockers on board and all most all are vented for damp tropical air. The companion way on the 44 is as good as you will find, nothing like the 43. On the 44 as you go below you have great strong rails and a narrow entrance so your shoulders are never far from a support wall, it would be very hard to get thrown off the ladder in ruff seas. Make sure you have a drifter, that boat really needs one.
PM me if you would like to know more.

from a couple of months' ago. Jolly nice sail and always felt confident with her.

Wouldn't like to suffer a knock-down to Starboard though and got a tiny bit peeved with the height of the but otherwise, great boat.

Boat: a sailing boat
but I believe the original rig was (?) ketch/yawl. There must be a reason why they converted.

closed and secured. On the 44 the dodger should be no different than most dodgers on any good cruising boat. It's the mason 43 that has problems with dodgers.

One note on the Mason, the port lights are constructed poorly, screwed in from inside and a knock down would easily blow them inward. I can't believe one could build such a seaworthy boat and then allow that weakness. I built storm shutters for long difficult passages as I could not figure out how to correct the problem.

Boat: Tartan 4400- Tartini Time
will point to weather better and light air breezes are 2 main differences. Under a blow, I would rather be on the Mason, so it really depends on the type of sailing you will do. I sail out of Oxnard, on a Tartan 4400, and she gives me that same feeling of old world build quality, but with a more modern underbody and lighter . If you are not concerned with a couple of extra days on a long voyage, and are planning on casting off the lines for good, then the Mason is a great choice for the . If you are like most (myself included) who own boats that can voyage, but mostly the local area waters and can a bit higher for a nice boat, then contact me regarding my Tartan 4400 in Oxnard. My info is in the classified section of Latitude 38.

Boat: Mason 44
, sailed offshore to the and back. We've been in light weather, in heavy squalls and conditions we'd like to avoid. The boat handles well and I always have confidence in her.

The 43 and 44 are the same hull with some differences, but same design. Deck houses and interiors are a bit different. Basically a , heavy that likes a good breeze. Under 10 knots, she doesn't get up and go so well. But they are sea kindly and get where they are going...and with the tankage of and water, they are good boats. We actually had to most of the way from St. Maarten to because there was no ...perfect calm for 4 days. We passed many other boats just sitting and waiting for the to come up. Got in way before the others. Every boat is a compromise...my is find someone with a Mason and get them to take you out for a sail. After 20+ years of , we're looking forward to the next 20. Well built, comfortable cruising boats. Definitely a proper yacht.

  19. comparison of the 423 vs the 43
