Best marinas to dock your boat..

Marine, marina, harbor, yacht club, port — not exactly synonyms, but close. A marina provides safe dockage for vessels of all sizes, often offering supplies, repair, and other facilities to those who rent a slip. The best places to dock your superyacht

Life aboard a Super Yacht is undoubtedly a memorable experience. These luxurious boats are equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems  and their crews are accurately trained high-performance teams.

But for the boat to always be in the best conditions, it is essential to perform periodic maintenance in facilities that allow to review, update, repair, and intervene any part of the structure and onboard systems.

There are many docks around the world with the capacity to undertake the inspection and maintenance of vessels. But few of them have professionals, facilities, and equipment that can make the maintenance and repair of Superyachts.

The best places to dock your superyacht by SCS Yachting

In the elite of docks for Superyachts, we find the facilities of Amico & Co , located in the port of Genoa, which recently put launching its modern ShipLift system. This system is capable of removing Mega yachts up to 95 meters from the water and completely repairing large vessels that, without the ShipLift system, would have to stop in dry dock for maintenance.

The revolutionary innovation of the ShipLift system consists of the incorporation of a submersible platform that can raise the vessels from the water to the ground level so that they are housed in a structure dedicated exclusively to that vessel. When the boat is out of the water, a sophisticated mechanism moves the yacht so that professionals can access any part of the structure and accurately perform the necessary repairs.

In addition to technological innovation, the Amico & Co dock is designed in a 100% sustainable manner, all maneuvers have zero environmental impact and zero emissions, with ISO14001 certification .

Awsome Marinas around the globe

While Superyachts are at the repair dock, what can guests and crews do?

Requirements for Superyacht Docking

superyacht docking

When it comes to docking a superyacht, there are a few key considerations that need to be taken into account.

From the size of the vessel to the location of the dock, there are a range of factors that affect the cost and potential for a successful docking.

The first factor to consider is the size of the vessel.

Superyachts vary in size, from small vessels that measure just a few feet to large ones that can measure up to over 200 feet.

Of course, the larger the vessel, the more dock space it requires and the more costly it is to dock it.

The second factor to consider is the location of the dock.

Different countries and regions have different rules and regulations regarding the docking of superyachts.

Additionally, some regions may have more favorable docking conditions than others, such as the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands, the Caribbean, and the Greek Isles.

In the US, some of the most popular places for superyacht docking include Miami, the Florida Keys, California, and the Gulf Coast.

The third factor to consider is the type of dock.

Different types of docks offer different benefits, and the type of dock needed for a superyacht depends on the size of the vessel and the type of activities it will be used for.

For example, a superyacht may require a marina with a floating dock or a pier with a mooring buoy.

The fourth factor to consider is the cost of docking.

Docking a superyacht can be expensive, depending on the size of the vessel and the type of dock needed.

Additionally, some docks may also charge additional fees for services such as waste disposal, water, electricity, and fuel.

Finally, its important to consider the safety of the vessel when docking a superyacht.

A reputable dock should offer security measures such as CCTV, security guards, and access control systems.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the dock is capable of handling the size and weight of the vessel, as well as the size of the crew.

By taking these factors into consideration, it is possible to find the perfect dock for a superyacht.

Docking a superyacht is an exciting experience, and by following these guidelines, it can be a safe and enjoyable one.

For superyacht owners, insurance is an important part of owning and operating a vessel.

Superyachts are expensive investments, and proper insurance coverage is essential.

Insuring a superyacht requires a few key components, including hull and machinery coverage, pollution liability, and third-party liability.

Hull and machinery coverage is the most basic and important type of insurance for superyacht owners, as it provides protection for the vessel itself and its equipment.

Pollution liability covers any environmental damage that the superyacht may cause, and third-party liability helps to cover any potential legal liabilities that may arise from the vessels activities.

In addition to these types of coverage, superyacht owners must consider if towing coverage is necessary.

Towing coverage helps to protect the vessel and its crew in the event of a breakdown or emergency.

While towing coverage is not required, it can be invaluable in the event of an emergency.

Finally, superyacht owners should also consider the risks associated with where the vessel will be docked.

Different ports and marinas may have different requirements for insurance coverage, so it is important for owners to research any port or marina they plan to dock at and make sure they have the necessary insurance coverage.

Having the right insurance coverage is essential for any superyacht owner.

Taking the time to research and understand the different types of coverage available can help ensure that owners have the protection they need.

Final Thoughts

Owning a superyacht is an incredible experience, and the fantastic destinations available around the world make it even more enjoyable.

Whether youre looking to cruise the Mediterranean or explore the Florida Keys, theres a perfect destination for you.

Furthermore, there are plenty of other options available to those who dont want to purchase their own vessel, such as renting one or taking a vacation aboard someone elses.

Its important to make sure youre aware of the docking requirements and insurance options when it comes to superyachts.

Now that youve learned more about where to dock your superyacht, why not start planning your next adventure?

Can Deckhands Have Tattoos?

The yachting industry values professionalism and a certain standard of appearance. While visible tattoos may not be a deal-breaker on all yachts, they can limit your job prospects. It’s advisable to be upfront about any visible tattoos when applying for positions.

Each yacht has its own unique culture and policies, particularly when it comes to tattoos. While some yachts are more lenient, embracing both small and large visible tattoos, others may enforce strict policies against them. It’s important to be transparent about any visible tattoos you have. However, there’s no need to disclose tattoos that are not visible.

Is It Hard Being a Deckhand?

It’s not all watersports and driving multimillion-dollar tenders , there are long days of work , loads of physically demanding work and a lot of job/yacht-specific skills to learn which only comes with experience working on Superyachts. There will be a lot of working outdoors in hot weather, a lot of yacht maintenance & cleaning. There will be a lot of hard work however there are so many rewarding experiences and memories that outway by far all the hard work.Make sure you have a can-do, positive attitude and don’t be afraid to help other departments on the yacht if you have spare time , it goes a long way.

How Much Do Junior Deckhands Earn?

Salaries for deckhands can vary widely based on the yacht’s size, the vessel’s itinerary, and the deckhand’s experience.

Junior Deckhands : Starting Salary: Junior deckhands, who are just beginning their careers in the yachting industry, can expect to earn between $2,500 and $3,500 USD per month. These entry-level positions provide the foundational experience necessary for a successful career at sea.

Experienced Deckhands : Salary Range: As deckhands gain experience and demonstrate their skills, their earning potential increases. Experienced deckhands can expect to earn between $3,000 and $4,500 USD per month, depending on the yacht’s size, the complexity of the itinerary, and the specific duties they are tasked with.

Lead Deckhands : Salary Insights: Lead deckhands, who have additional responsibilities and may oversee junior deckhands, can see their salaries increase to between $3,500 and $5,000 USD per month. Their role is more demanding, requiring not only a thorough understanding of deck operations but also leadership skills.

Bosuns: Earning Potential: Bosuns, who are responsible for supervising the deck crew and maintaining the exterior of the yacht, can earn between $4,000 and $6,000 USD per month. Their salary reflects their critical role in ensuring the vessel is in pristine condition and their ability to manage the deck team effectively.

Officers: Salary Range: Officers on yachts have significant responsibilities, including navigation and safety management. Their salaries can range from $5,000 to over $8,000 USD per month, depending on their rank, the size of the yacht, and their specific duties. Chief officers, who are second-in-command, can expect salaries at the higher end of this range.

Captains: Top Earnings: Captains, who have the ultimate responsibility for the yacht, its crew, and its passengers, can earn from $7,000 USD to well over $20,000 USD per month. The captain’s salary is influenced by the size of the yacht, the complexity of the voyages undertaken, and their level of experience.

Factors Influencing Salaries

Yacht Size: Larger yachts typically offer higher salaries due to the increased workload and expertise required. Experience and Qualifications: Crew members with more experience and specialized qualifications can command higher salaries. Charter vs. Private: Crew on charter yachts might earn more due to tips from guests, whereas private yacht crew salaries are often more stable but without the added bonus of tips.

How To Become a Deckhand In Australia?

The process involves specific training and certifications, especially due to the requirements set by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate your way into this career:

1. Understand the Training Requirements

The foundational step to becoming a deckhand in Australia is to complete the necessary safety training. While the training is broadly similar across different countries, there are specific requirements for those intending to work on commercial vessels within Australia:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training: This is a mandatory course for anyone working at sea, covering essential safety procedures, firefighting, first aid, and personal survival techniques. In Australia, the AMSA requires crew members working on commercial vessels to have an AMSA-compliant Certificate of Safety Training (COST).
  • General Purpose Hand: The Australian General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate I in Marine Operations qualification will enable you to work as a deckhand on Australian Registered commercial or private vessels
  • AMSA Medical: If you wish to work on commercial vessels in Australia you will need an AMSA medical to ensure you are fit to work at sea you can find centres to complete the medical here – https://www.sonichealthplus.com.au/services/legislative-medicals/maritime

2. Choose the Right Certification for Your Career Path

Depending on where you intend to work, you’ll need to choose the appropriate certification:

  • For Private and Foreign-Flagged Vessels in Australia: If your goal is to work on private or foreign-flagged vessels within Australia, you can use an MCA-approved STCW 95 certificate issued by the Marshall Islands, which SCA (Superyacht Crew Academy) offers. This certification allows you to work on private and foreign-flagged vessels in Australia, providing a pathway to gain experience before potentially heading overseas.
  • For Commercial Vessels in Australia: If you aim to work exclusively on commercial vessels in Australia, such as charter boats or tour boats, you should obtain an AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (COST). This certification is specifically designed to meet the requirements for crew members on commercial vessels operating within Australian waters.

3. Gain Experience

  • Start Locally: Gaining experience in Australia before heading overseas is highly recommended. Working locally allows you to understand the industry better, build your resume, and develop the necessary skills in a familiar environment.
  • Consider Temp Work: Temporary positions can provide valuable experience and insight into the life of a deckhand. These roles can also offer networking opportunities, which are crucial in the yachting industry.

4. Plan Your Career Path

  • Decide on Your Long-Term Goals: Whether you wish to explore international waters or prefer to stay within Australia, your career goals will influence the type of experience and certifications you should pursue.
  • Continuous Learning: The yachting industry is constantly evolving, so staying updated with the latest safety protocols, regulations, and skills is essential for your career development.

Once you have completed your training sign up to as many Australian agencies as possible to increase your chances of landing a job , you can find a list of the Australian agencies below.

How To Do The Dock Walk

Superyacht jobs, filed under:.

 Tune in via

Listen now- check out the seaworthy stew podcast here.

Wondering what one wears when planning to dock walk? Where to walk the docks and how to approach a yacht? Listen on The Seaworthy Podcast or read ‘The Stew Diary’ to find out more about your presentation whilst dockwalking, locations to dockwalk, how to approach a yacht and why you need a game plan for the day…as timing is everything!

So What exactly does dockwalking entail I hear you ask? Dock walking is when you walk along the dock where all Superyachts are tied alongside, approaching each yacht and speaking to crew onboard to see if they need any help on the boat. Why yachts need day workers? Quick turnarounds between charters, pre-season preparation or getting ready for a boat show can be an ideal time to look for day work. The deck departments need day workers to assist with daily tasks like wash downs, varnishing, and polishing so they can get the jobs done faster. The interior department may need a day worker to help detail guest cabins, helping out with crew mess duties or maybe the engineering team need someone to help tidy up the engine room or clean up the bilges. So Why dockwalk? It’s a Way of getting valuable industry experience, your aim should be to get your CV through the door!  Think of it as if it’s a personal delivery of your CV to the boat.   *This is an activity (Dock walking) where you will need to ditch your Crew House roomie for (sorry not sorry). Yachts will be more likely to hire a sole person rather than a group! You got this… ⁣ Now I am yet to meet someone who says they enjoy dockwalking but I will honestly say it was an eye opening experience to these boats and made me step outside my comfort zone… and that’s always a good thing right?  So let’s get into more about dock walking…

#1: Presentation- Why it’s important.

  • What to wear: White polo shirt, navy or grey shorts or skort, with a pair of sneaker or loafers.
  • Comfy shoes often there are many ports to cover in one day
  • Neat hair and makeup
  • Cover your tattoos
  • A SMILE 🙂 Be confident and happy…. you’re in the South of France… it could be worse? Your goal is to get your foot in the door whether it be interior work, a job on a sail yacht or exterior work scrubbing teak on deck.⁣

#2: Locations to Dock Walk

  • Palma on the Spanish island of Majorca, Antibes in South of France and Fort lauderdale in Floria The states are your yachting hubs for dockwalking. Previously, you used to be able to turn up at almost any port ready to dockwalk, but the practice of dockwalking is now becoming more strictly regulated and you may struggle to be allowed into certain marinas, especially in the bigger ports in the South of France and Spain like the IYCA in Antibes and STP in Palma.
  • But don’t let that stop you from dockwalking… unless you’re in Fort Lauderdale and you DON’T have a US passport – as it’s illegal to dockwalk if your not an American citizen. Also keep in mind those who have a British Passport are now (Post Brexit) considered illegal to look for work in the Med on the docks. Be careful not to end up getting kicked out of the EU.

Ports with heightened security (tough to dockwalk in):

  • Antibes (IYCA)
  • Palma (STP, Port de Mallorca, Pantalan Mediterraneo, Astilleros, Club de Mar)
  • Barcelona (MB92, Marina Port Vell)

Places to give a try:

  • Genoa (Molo Vecchio)

Winter Season:

  • Try Antigua – if you can afford to fly over and find a cheap place to stay (Marsh Village is a good example) there are plenty of boats who will change out crew after crossings or the first charter. Yachts will often favour qualified crew who are already there rather than flying someone in.
  • Consider travelling to Fort Lauderdale to find work if you’re not a US passport holder – you’ll be breaking the law.
  • Ever try to break into a marina or port to dockwalk – you could find yourself being reported to the authorities.

Tip: Websites such as marinetraffic.com offer live satellite tracking and show you how many yachts are in port and where; allowing you to best plan your day the night before. It’s also important to look beyond the large ports to smaller marinas that may receive less dockwalking traffic. For instance, if you are in Monaco, it’s a short walk across to the ports of Fontvieille and Cap d’Ail.

Don’t be afraid to look a little further than these main hubs, in europe you can catch a train to Laciotat (shipard), Nice 25 mins from antibes, Genoa in Italy. Another tip when planning to catch these trains in France is to know thee trains often run late and have a lot of strikes so check online as to whether or not they are running. You can also pre-purchase your tickets online which saves you from trying your best at french trying to speak to the train ticket staff.

#3: How to approach a yacht when Dockwalking

  • At the front of the yacht you will find the passarelle the platform used to get onto the boat from the dock. Have a look to see if you can spot a crew member on deck and politely try get there attention. If there is no one in sight press the passarelle buzzer (the intercom), just once. The intercom system will notifies a crew member inside and they will be out soon to greet you so be friendly and smile. Ask politely if the appropriate Head of Department is available for a quick chat Introduce yourself smile! Explain the position you are looking for, Tell the HOD you have your certifications ready to go & with your ‘x’ amount of experience (in a related area to yachting). You will pass on your CV in a plastic sleeve (not crumpled), let he or she know you appreciate taking time out of their day, remind them of your name, smile and walk away confidently. Now be open minded and don’t skip any yachts (day work is day work, sail yacht or motor yacht, deck position or interior position), everyone has to start somewhere.

First come first served, plan to arrive early and avoid crew break times, which are usually 9:30-10:30 (morning tea), 12-1pm (lunch) and after 5pm (end of day).  the best time to dockwalk is when the yachts are preparing for the start of the season and looking to fill those seasonal vacancies or when a boat show is coming up.

When NOT to dockwalk:

  • If there are guests onboard – not sure – check to see if the cushions or tables  are uncovered on the aft decks, theres shoe baskets and a nice mat at the end of the passerelle.
  • When the yachts is trying to enter or exit the port- this is a busy time for crew, they don’t have time to chat.

#5: Extra TIPS

  • It’s important to identify your strengths, skillset and ensure they come across on your CV and when you’re talking to crew members on yachts. I am working on a CV Tool kit which helps you identify these strengths and helps you make a stand out CV which ticks all the Superyacht Industry boxes.
  • Don’t take it too personally if the crew are too busy to chat, move onto the next boat and keep up those positive vibes- you never know when someone is hiring!
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged- worthwhile bringing a back up charger as you need to be by your phone in case a captain calls you for the following day
  • Keep a diary of all the boats you visited, the names of the person you spoke to and the general vibe you got from the boat. Worthwhile to look back on when you’re not sure if you’ve already been to see that boat or not.
  • Pack a spare polo shirt and a pair of socks for the interior – you may be lucky enough to score day work then and there- the chief stew will not appreciate dirty socks on the white silk carpet.

Lastly I would like to leave you on this note… You have brains in your head and have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. Best of luck to you Dock Walkers! You never know what job opportunities are around the corner.

Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

Jeff Bezos’s yacht docked in a port. There are palm trees in the foreground and cranes in the background.

By Lola Fadulu

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Jack Begg contributed research.

The best superyacht marinas in Miami

One island park.

In Miami, everyone wants a piece of the waterfront. Condos, restaurants and private homes all try to stake claim on the ever-disappearing property by bay (and sea). Luckily, in a water-centric city like Miami, marinas take up a good portion of this prime real estate .

With dockage available in every waterfront neighbourhood, you can decide what amenities you seek, how much privacy you desire and which part of Miami you’d like to be based to explore this exciting city .

1. One Island Park

The One Island Park compound opened in Miami Beach in November last year and is designed solely for superyachts and is able to accommodate yachts measuring up to 244 metres in its deep water berths.

Visitors to One Island Park will enjoy a vast range of VIP concierge services, as well as a high level of exclusivity. The new compound was designed to showcase both the area and the best standards of service, meaning it will become an extremely popular spot for private owners, while its location means that clients can enjoy the thriving art scene, the beaches and the nightlife of Miami.

Island Gardens

The new superyacht marina Island Gardens Deep Harbour is situated on Watson Island and is capable of berthing 50 superyachts measuring up to 167 metres. The retail and residential aspects of the marina are not expected to be completed for the next two years, but the marina is fully operational with 1,524 linear metres of capacity with drafts of 5.4-6.4 metres deep.

Coconut Grove

Home to the U.S. Sailing Center and multiple yacht clubs, Coconut Grove is a hotbed for yachting activity. The 582-slip Dinner Key Marina, which survived the worst of the hurricane damage in September, sits right in the centre, and only steps away from the shops and restaurants of “The Grove.” The protected marina hosts yachts up to 38 metres with two metres of draft.

Sea Isle Marina

The Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Centre is a great place for yachts up to 42 metres to tie-up and be in close distance to what downtown has to offer with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the performing arts and the arena where the Miami Heat play right around the corner. There are also great restaurants right on site, as well as fuel and a ship’s store.

Miamarina at Bayside

Surrounded by shops, dining and even an outdoor auditorium, the Miamarina at Bayside is a lively marina. The marina has 130 slips and hosts yachts up to 60 metres and offers easy access to both the Atlantic through Government Cut and to Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys to the south.

Epic Marina

Epic Marina is surely one of the plushest in Miami and despite being hit hard during Hurricane Irma, is once again capable of hosting superyachts up to 95 metres. In the shadow of Miami’s luxe Epic Residences & Hotel, the marina isn’t short on high-end amenities. Guests can enjoy sumptuous meals at on site restaurants Area 31 and Zuma.

Sunset Harbour Yacht Club

Set off the Venetian Causeway on Biscayne Bay, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club offers ample dockage outside of the hubbub of the Miami Beach scene. Catering to yachts up to 45 metres with 125 deepwater slips, the designated “clean marina”, an initiative started by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has some great amenities including a pool and fitness centre. Fuel can be delivered and it is loacated right around the corner from a large Publix supermarket for easy provisioning.

Indian Creek Marina

Across from Miami’s iconic and historic Fountainbleau Resort on Collins Avenue, Indian Creek Marina at the Fountainbleau Resort (home to one of the best hotel spas to visit in Miami ) can host yachts up to 76 metres. In February, this waterway is lined with yachts during the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show. The rest of the year, it’s open to transiting yachts and makes a great destination marina that is in close distance to Miami’s finest spas and eateries, as it's located right across from the beach.

Miami Beach Marina

In the south end of Miami Beach, the full-service Miami Beach Marina has 400 slips for yachts up to 76 metres. The marina offers direct access to Government Cut, a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, which allows better access to the Port of Miami. Likewise, it’s only moments to the best of what South Beach has to offer; the beach and the best restaurants, nightlife and spas are just steps away.

Private Marinas

Yachtsmen seeking a private marina experience while in Miami should look no further than these havens:

The exclusive private island community of Fisher Island Club, across from Miami Beach, is ‘members only’, but sponsorship (from a member or the dockmaster) allows temporary membership for yachts up to 76.2 metres in length to tie up in the marina. And their owners can enjoy all the perks of the club, including the beach club, spa, tennis centre, hotel, restaurants and PB Dye-designed golf course.

Midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Aventura, Turnberry Isle Marina Yacht Club accommodates 117 yachts up to 45-metres. Amenities include 24-hour security, a private ocean club, pool, spa, several restaurants, and two 18-hole Raymond Floyd-designed championship golf courses.

Yacht Docking Costs: A Comprehensive Guide

A blog post header image for a post titled "Yacht Docking Costs: A Comprehensive Guide" showing two large yachts docked in a Mediterranean marina.

Docking a yacht is an essential aspect of yacht ownership, offering security and accessibility for your vessel. However, the cost of docking can vary widely based on several factors, including location, size of the yacht, and the amenities provided by the marina. This comprehensive guide aims to shed light on the various expenses associated with yacht docking, helping yacht owners make informed decisions.

Key Factors Influencing Docking Costs

  • Location : The location of the marina plays a significant role in docking fees. Prime locations in sought-after destinations often command higher prices due to their popularity and limited availability.
  • Size of the Yacht : The length and beam of a yacht directly impact docking costs. Larger yachts require more space and often special accommodations, leading to higher fees.
  • Amenities and Services : Marinas offering extensive amenities such as electricity, water, security, Wi-Fi, and on-site maintenance will typically charge more for their docking spaces.
  • Seasonality : Seasonal demand can affect docking prices, with peak boating seasons seeing an increase in rates due to higher demand.

Average Docking Costs

The cost of docking a yacht can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per month. For example, a small yacht (up to 30 feet) may cost anywhere from $300 to $800 per month to dock, while larger luxury yachts (over 100 feet) could see fees in the range of $3,000 to $10,000 per month or more, depending on the location and services provided.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Docking

  • Short-term Docking : Ideal for travelers or those looking to dock for a few days to weeks. Rates are often calculated per foot, per day.
  • Long-Term Docking : More cost-effective for those planning to stay at a marina for several months or the entire season. Many marinas offer discounted rates for long-term commitments.

Additional Costs to Consider

  • Utilities : Charges for water, electricity, and other utilities may be billed separately or included in the docking fee.
  • Maintenance and Repairs : Access to on-site maintenance and repair services can add to the overall cost.
  • Insurance : Some marinas require proof of insurance, which could lead to additional insurance costs for yacht owners.

Tips for Reducing Docking Costs

  • Compare Marinas : Research and compare prices and amenities of different marinas.
  • Negotiate Rates : Don’t hesitate to negotiate long-term docking rates.
  • Join a Yacht Club : Membership in a yacht club can offer discounted docking rates and other benefits.
  • Consider Off-Peak Seasons : Docking in the off-season may provide lower rates.

The cost of docking a yacht involves various factors and can significantly vary. By understanding these factors and considering the tips provided, yacht owners can find the best docking solutions to fit their needs and budget. Whether you own a small yacht or a grand vessel, the key to managing docking costs lies in careful planning and informed decision-making.

Remember, the joy of yachting comes with its share of responsibilities and costs. However, with the right approach, you can ensure that your yachting experience is both enjoyable and economically feasible.

Jeff Bezos' Superyacht Is So Massive It Had To Be Docked Next To Oil Tankers In Florida

The billionaire's sailing yacht, the koru, completed its journey from the mediterranean to the u.s. where it towers over other superyachts..

Image for article titled Jeff Bezos' Superyacht Is So Massive It Had To Be Docked Next To Oil Tankers In Florida

Jeff Bezos is insanely rich. So much so that his superyacht is bigger than other rich people’s superyachts, which is pretty wild if you think about it. Bezos’ recently completed ship, the Koru, is currently docked down in Florida where its massive size made it a bit difficult to dock.

Suggested Reading

Luxury Launches reported that the Koru, which is currently the biggest sailing ship in the world, recently completed its months long journey from the Mediterranean all the way to Port Everglades in South Florida. Any other billionaire’s boat wouldn’t have any trouble docking at the port, which can accommodate yachts in size up to 400 feet. The 416-foot Koru dwarfs that in nearly every dimension.

The half-a-billion-dollar boat is nearly twice the length of an Airbus A380 with an internal volume of 3,300 GT. Moreover, its triple masts measuring 230 feet make the vessel nearly half the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Related Content

The Koru is so big that it had to be docked near two 600-plus-foot oil tankers. Equally huge are the docking fees and the cost to keep this thing running. Using another superyacht as an example, Luxury Launches says that current docking rates at Port Everglades can run $22,000 for just 10 days. That’s in addition to the daily upkeep costs  of $137,000 for the Koru, which should be chump change for Bezos.

Don’t forget about the Koru’s $75 million support yacht , Abeona, that follows the Koru just so Bezos’ fiancé Lauren Sanchez can land her helicopter on it. Abeona won’t be joining the Koru in Florida, however. The smaller yacht is headed to the Bahamas where it’s expected the Koru will meet up with it soon.

However, Henry acquired it in 2016.

Elysian ranks among the top five per cent of the world’s largest yachts, according to Boat International .

The superyacht has an outdoor swimming pool, a spa centre, a gym and a helipad among its features.

Mr Henry’s gem can accommodate up to 12 guests in six staterooms, and 17 crew members in separate quarters.
