Description of layout from forwards

• She has a large forepeak forward, which is separated by a crash bulkhead. The Owner’s Stateroom is aft of this with a vanity and storage area forward, separated shower/bath compartment and heads compartment to port. On the starboard side there are capacious lockers and there is a king sized double berth forward facing with access to both sides. A hatch arrangement separates this cabin from the Great Room, which is accessed via steps.
• The Great Room has a full bridge area with an L shaped seating and dining area to port and a sofa to starboard. This area is fitted with seat belts for use during passages. Aft of this is a U shaped galley area to port with a very full array of kitchen equipment and refrigeration. To port is further storage and space for the washing machine and dryer.
• Beneath the sole boards is a huge storage area known as the basement with ample space for storing equipment and spares.
• Down steps aft to 2 twin cabins each with their own en-suite heads compartment and a shared shower stall. These are comfortable and spacious cabins with ample storage.
• The engine room is accessed through the shared shower and offers great access to all the systems and is easy to move around in. There is plenty of room for tools and spares.
• Back in the Great Room there are steps up onto the aft deck which has plenty of room for 2 dinghies which can be deployed using the mast booms. Steps down to the large bathing platform for easy boarding. The side decks are wide and there is a large foredeck area.

Cochise: On board Steve Dashew’s super-tough explorer yacht

12,500 nautical miles in only a matter of months? The new Dashew Offshore FPB 78 is not going to gather algae...

A few minutes into a conversation with Steve and Linda Dashew, the couple behind Dashew Offshore and the owners of Cochise , the first Dashew Offshore FPB 78, we are deep into topics that make my head spin: stability, harmonic rolling and polar moments.

Such detailed technical specifics are inherent to the philosophy behind the couple’s designs, and their boats naturally attract like-minded customers — people buying Dashew Offshores tend to be very experienced cruisers.

We’ve just sat down in comfortable armchairs in what they call, justifiably, the “great room” on Cochise , when Steve brings up Yogi , the 60.2 metre superyacht that sank in the Aegean Sea in February 2012. Large motor yachts, like high tonnage commercial vessels, have little tolerance for heeling beyond 45 degrees, Steve says. With a bit of bad luck, even moderate waves can push a listing boat to the point of no return.

A post-incident report on Yogi stated that the “vessel was technically beyond reproach and fully complied with the requirements of the French administration”. It detailed a series of failures that led to the yacht’s demise, including engine malfunction due to water intrusion and loss of steering. One glaring omission in this report, Steve says, is that it fails to mention the role played by the limited stability that is considered adequate by most class rules, including the MCA.

It’s not unusual for the American to question what’s widely accepted in the maritime world. Circumnavigator James Hamilton, who owns the Nordhavn 52 Dirona , wrote in a blog entry recounting his impression of Cochise that Dashew harbours “a complete disdain for industry dogma”.

Steve combines healthy scepticism with vast experience. He and Linda have written reference books on weather, seamanship and offshore cruising, but their primary occupation for years was designing and building solid cruising sailing boats. In 1994 they retired from boatbuilding forever — or so they thought at the time.

A motor yacht named Wind Horse changed that. It was a completely unconventional explorer yacht, all aluminium and shallow except for big underwater appendages. They cruised on it part-time for seven years and covered 67,000 nautical miles. Their journeys and articles caught the attention of like-minded cruisers and, before long, they were boatbuilders again. “The boat business is like malaria; you think you have it beat and then it comes back,” Steve says.

The long, lean hull of the Dashew Offshore FPBs, their workboat appearance and big rudders are some of the features that set them apart from nearly all other motor yachts. Front and centre, though, is the matter of stability. “We have a very carefully controlled stability curve that combines a very soft, comfortable motion at sea with the ability to recover from heel angles in excess of 140 degrees.”

The prospect of having to test this seems unlikely as Cochise sits in a dock in a sheltered inner canal in Fort Lauderdale. However, it’s not a place where you’d find the couple very often. In fact, as we emerge from the engine room to face the Intracoastal Waterway busy with a stream of centre consoles, Steve admits this is not his kind of place.

Cochise ’s shakedown cruise was some 11,000 nautical miles long in three months. And at the time of writing the boat had covered 12,500 nautical miles, averaging 14 knots between Fort Lauderdale and Southport, North Carolina.

From Whangarei on New Zealand’s North Island, where Cochise was built at Circa Marine , the Dashews headed to Fiji with plans to return to finish a list of small fixes that winter had interrupted. But the boat performed well and the Dashews, who wanted to return to their home in Arizona in time for the college basketball season, decided to press on instead. The intention was to reach Fort Lauderdale, where they would dock the boat and catch a flight back to Arizona to watch their beloved University of Arizona basketball team.

They left Fiji on 8 October, 2016, stopped in Ra’iātea in the Society Islands for a few days and topped up their fuel tanks, then headed for Panama. The 4,700 nautical miles, against the trade winds or, as Steve says, “uphill”, was done at an average speed of 10 knots, with Cochise burning nine tenths of a gallon an hour, leaving more than enough fuel to reach their next destination.

In Panama a tropical storm became Hurricane Otto. They ducked into a sheltered bay with other boats while the storm battered the small S-shaped country. It left at least four people dead before churning on towards Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

On 24 November, Thanksgiving Day, the coast was clear again. Linda had made two pies to share with the other boaters but the basketball season called. They headed out, foregoing the traditional feast, and Cochise arrived in Fort Lauderdale on 3 December, just before league play started.

They are back on America’s East Coast getting ready for trips with their grandchildren when I visit. I have no trouble spotting Cochise along the canal. Its unpainted aluminium hull is reminiscent of a naval interceptor or patrol boat — an illusion that the Dashews don’t mind creating as they travel to the planet’s most isolated locations.

What sets Cochise apart from most combat ships, however, are the large windows wrapping the main deck and what the Dashews call the “matrix” deck above, an enclosed flybridge deck/upper saloon.

Of the two main decks, the lower deck is for guest and crew accommodation. A simple, light hued décor, pictures of nature and careful lighting compensate for the lack of natural light below. The only openings on that level are for air ducts drawing fresh air from vents on the upper deck, judiciously positioned to cool Cochise even when they are not using air conditioning, which is often.

The Dashews turned to residential designer Denise LaVey to create Cochise ’s softer side. “I tend to favour subtlety and simplicity over complicated and fussy,” says LaVey, who ranks this as one of her two favourite projects. The residential designer admits that at first she was intimidated by the amount of glass on the main and matrix decks, but later realised that it fitted her design philosophy of simplicity and subtlety. “You let the environment and the light do the heavy lifting, and just assist it with certain elements,” she says.

“The main concern is to have fabrics and soft goods that are environmentally tough [and] able to withstand a saltwater environment without breaking down. With linens and towels, there is, as with any yacht, the concern of storage limitations. That’s something I think people often forget… you’re competing with spares and provisions.

“So I recommended Bemboka linen sheets. They’re incredibly comfortable, they sleep cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather, and they’re washer/dryer friendly. Same with towels — I ordered Abyss: highly absorbent cotton, luxe but easily cleaned and very durable.”

The need to keep things light also dictated the choice of materials. “Steve and Linda were excited about a modern aesthetic this time out: the faux blonde wood flooring is both high quality and very lightweight, and added some warmth to offset the ultra modern white lacquer cabinetry. The wall covering is a textured vinyl — again, [it] works great with the variances in temperatures and humidity, and looks rich.”

The “great room” is the heart of life on board Cochise , with an open plan layout that is very inviting and perfectly suited to owner operators who spend a great deal of time on board. Here you can cook, entertain and steer the boat from a surprisingly compact helm station, located on the port side.

It’s the ultimate social space, and there is no lack of visibility through panels of thick and laminated glass. But should you need to see further, another helm is set up on the matrix deck above; along with a seating area that offers incredible views.

Steve, according to his philosophy, goes for proven and simpler systems controlled via two streamlined helm stations, plus a portable wing one. He found out that he did not need Cochise ’s bow thruster so he had it decommissioned and covered the opening with a plate. “The propellers and large rudders that rotate through 90 degrees do all the work,” he says. He uses oversized Naiad fin stabilisers for comfort in heavy weather.

The engine room containing two 230hp, six cylinder John Deere diesels is laid out so that everything is easily accessible. Similarly, there is no backing to the cabinets, so you can view and access all that’s behind. “I want to see the structure, I want to see the insulation and the systems, ” Steve says.

After passages, a high-pressure water hose knocks off the salt and there are no teak decks to refinish or touch-up painting to do, so maintenance is limited. However, despite lacking some of the luxuries of modern superyachts, Cochise was still not a cheap boat to build.

She is made with high quality aluminium that exceeds Lloyd’s ice class requirements and that may bend under blunt trauma but won’t puncture. The combination of massive strength, six watertight compartments and a double bottom allow room for “operator error”, an engineering concept that has been tested by two of the FPBs.

The insulation is a flexible EPDM closed cell elastomeric, laminated with a self adhesive, which not only resists moisture but is also an effective noise dampener. “It costs a small fortune,” Steve says, but it is well worth it. Solar panels replenish a high-capacity traction battery bank, ensuring that Cochise is not dependent on her Onan generator.

But a lot of the cost comes from something less tangible. Steve estimates that 18,000 man-hours went into Cochise before a single cut was made. During the Dashew engineering phase, everything, including where pipes and wires will run, is decided. A CNC machine then cuts the pieces precisely according to CAD files, including holes for the ducts. This goes for the aluminium plate and the furniture.

Hull No 2 of the FPB 78, Grey Wolf II , which has been delivered and has started cruising, was built to comply with the MCA’s rules for Category 0 — stringent requirements for unrestricted navigation that apply to vessels under 24 metres intended for commercial use — so it may be offered as a yacht for charter .

Speaking of size, Cochise feels quite a bit larger than a usual 24 metre. Some of that is attributable to the amount of glass, the light interior, and the open plan design. But as it turns out, from end to end, she is quite a bit bigger, 26.27 metres in fact. Achieving this requires a bit of fancy footwork but it is completely within the rules. She simply is a big 24 metre.

And in case that is just too small, Dashew Offshore has built a bigger boat. The Dashew FPB 97, 33 metres overall, was nicknamed Wicked when she launched in 2015. She is now named Iceberg and tries to stay under the radar, something that the Dashews don’t seem to be able to do.

History of FPB 83, WIND HORSE

WIND HORSE was where it all started, when Steve and Linda decided to sell their beloved 80’ ketch BEOWULF and try clockwork yachting. The design process was long and neither of them were sure that the concept would work. The result was WIND HORSE, and after 60,000 nautical miles of steaming, it was clear that the FPB concept was a success. The FPB 64’ fleet of 11 hulls followed, together with the FPB 97 ICEBERG, and three FPB 78s of which the first COCHISE, was Steve and Linda’s next yacht. The final FPBs to be added to the fleet were two FPB 70’s. This iconic fleet of 18 hulls are cruising the oceans of the planet and making magic today. WIND HORSE is at the core of them all.

Exploring the Accommodation & Deck Equipment of FPB 83, WIND HORSE

Fitted out by Kelly Archer in New Zealand and delivered in 2005, her high gloss teak interior today, looks much as it did on the day that she first splashed.

Her Great Room (main saloon) is light and airy with 360 degree vision, a large galley, seating and dining area and internal helm. She even has seat belts for very gnarly sea conditions and the helm area is at the centre of effort so comfortable in those conditions.

Her Owners’ Stateroom is forward with a large double berth, lots of wardrobe space and a basin. There is a heads compartment and separate shower which is set up to be a bath also.

Aft there are two good twin guest cabins and heads with access to the engine room via a separated shower compartment. The engine room is large housing twin 150hp John Deeres and an 8kVA Northern Lights generator.

“When Linda and I decided to design and build WIND HORSE, we were looking for a way to keep cruising on our own as we ‘matured’. Although we missed the challenge of sailing, WIND HORSE was so easy for us to run as a couple and so comfortable at sea that we cruised more than 60,000nm in just seven years of part-time cruising. From the beautiful atolls of the South Pacific to the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Svalbard, past 80 degrees North latitude and into the ice pack, WIND HORSE opened a new world of opportunities for us.

The bare aluminum exterior with its military/commercial look opened doors that would have been closed to a typical shiny in your face motor yacht. This disguise hid an exquisite interior, crafted by New Zealand’s finest carpenters, from golden Burmese teak. That timber was difficult to source and required over three thousand man-hours to finish in high gloss. Moreover, it gave us immense pleasure.

What we loved most about WIND HORSE was the flexibility she gave us. Take for example early January 2008; with no firm plans, we were kicking around destinations when the idea of Greenland surfaced. From Southern California at first, it sounded far-fetched. Eight months of comfortable cruising later WIND HORSE had taken us non-stop to Panama from Southern California, through the Bahamas, then to Canada, up the Straights of Belle Isle and in less than three days to Greenland. After Greenland, we decided to visit the British Isles where we ended up at Berthon for winter storage.

We will always have a soft spot in our hearts for WIND HORSE. She was truly our magic carpet.”

Entering the salon via a large swinging companionway door, one of the first things that draws your attention are the panoramic views and brightness that this pilothouse design allow. A dinette is located immediately to port with a quarterberth to starboard. The helm station is just forward of the quarterbeth, and with a full suite of updated electronics, provides a comfortable, safe spot to operate the boat when conditions are less than ideal in the cockpit. News From The Village Updated Almost Daily

O ne recent evening, just before sundown, a battleship-gray vessel steamed past the Oriental anchorage, motored under the bridge and dropped anchor at the mouth of Greens Creek. The vessel’s plumb destroyer bow and ash colored hull seemed out of place in North Carolina’s sailing capital. The vessel looked too purposeful to be merely a pleasure boat – too angular, too metallic. It had onlookers wondering. Was this a navy vessel, perhaps from a far off country? No. It was Steve and Linda Dashew aboard their 83-foot vessel “Wind Horse”. Wind Horse anchored in Greens Creek. To the casual observer, Wind Horse looks military. “We are often mistaken for the Navy,” Linda says. Steve and Linda Dashew To understand Wind Horse and her unconventional looks, one has to look back into Steve and Linda’s sailing past – about half a century’s worth. In the 1960s, Steve set the world speed sailing record aboard his D-Class catamaran “Beowulf”. Later, the couple sailed around the world in the “Intermezzo II”, their Columbia 50. Over the years, though, they never quite found the boat that met their cruising needs. So they designed and built the Deerfoot and Sundeer line of sailboats. Long and narrow, the premise behind these 60 and 70 foot boats was that a couple could sail them offshore in comfort and safety without additional crew. “Beowulf”, the Dashew’s previous 78-foot sailboat. On passage, Steve and Linda were often the boat’s sole crew. (Steve and Linda Dashew photo) Not only did they design and build these boats, they sailed them. Lots. Over the years, the couple racked up tens of thousands of offshore miles. Fast passage makers, these vessels are known to sail up to 300 miles per day while most sailors settled for half that. Steve says this allowed the boats and their crews to minimize time, and therefore poor weather, offshore. Steve and Linda chronicled these experiences in books such as “Surviving the Storm”, “Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia” and “Mariner’s Weather Handbook”. In time, though, Steve discovered a change that might not be as easily skirted or outrun. It wasn’t a meteorological storm. It was, Steve says, the march of time. Hauling and lowering sails on passage, day and night, in weather good and poor, was not as easy as it once was. So he and Linda decided on a life course correction. Not content to stow the anchor, they did what many diehard sailors would consider treason. They took up powerboating. [page] The trouble was, Steve and Linda couldn’t find a long range powerboat that suited their primary interest – voyaging offshore in safety and comfort. So, just as they’d overcome the challenge of finding a suitable sailboat, Steve says they “designed a boat to our own purposes.” The hardest part, Steve says “was getting my head around it that I was designing a powerboat.” Once he managed that, he says, he could move ahead. The new vessel had to “combine heavy weather ability with a comfort function.” And therein lies the answer to Wind Horse’s non standard look. On the outside she’s pure function. Inside, comfort gets the nod. The result is an unconventional appearance not often associated with pleasure boats. Wind Horse is the type of boat that leaves some people wondering if they’re looking at a flush deck, homebuilt minesweeper. Wind Horse as viewed from aft Long and narrow, Wind Horse is 83 feet long and 19 feet wide. This maximizes speed potential and minimizes fuel consumption. Cruising at 11 knots, she can easily cover 250 miles per day. Wind Horse viewed from the bow Steve built Wind Horse of aluminum. Though strong and light, it’s a hard material for paint to adhere to. So Steve left all exterior surfaces bare, preferring to let the raw aluminum oxidize to a flat, cinderblock -shade of gray. Considered unsightly by some boaters, he soon warmed to the “functionality of non-paint aluminum”, saying he “got used to the bare finish in a day or two.” The hull features a double bottom and watertight bulkheads. The double bottom serves as tankage and flotation. Should the hull be punctured, chances are good a second layer of “hull”, in the form of a tank, would prevent flooding. If Wind Horse were to puncture a single hulled section of her plating, the watertight bulkheads should limit flooding to individual compartments that can be sealed off. Step lively: one of the few drawbacks of a bare aluminum finish is heat. Though heavily insulated, Wind Horse’s decks get hot. That means, on sunny summer days, Linda says “you better walk fast” – or put on shoes. While Wind Horse has air conditioning, Steve and Linda have taken steps to minimize its use. Here, stowable fabric awning shade the pilot house and keep the decks cool. So how has Wind Horse worked out for them? Both agree she’s allowed them to do things they couldn’t have done aboard their previous sailboats. Like visit Greens Creek in Oriental. The sailboats Steve and Linda voyaged aboard for so many years relied on tall masts and deep drafts for stability and speed. Their 78-foot long Beowulf drew almost 8 feet of water and sported a spar that posed challenges at bridges. That meant while she could cross oceans in record time, cruising much of Intracoastal Waterway’s shoal waters was off limits for draft and clearance reasons. The mastless Wind Horse, by comparison, can slip under most bridges and explore relatively skinny waters. She draws only 5 feet. This allowed Steve and Linda, who were on their way to Norfolk, to steam under the Oriental bridge and drop their anchor at the mouth of Greens Creek. Not that Wind Horse is limited to coastal motoring. With two diesel engines and a range of over 5,000 miles, Wind Horse could theoretically, if motored conservatively, travel a quarter of the way around the world without refueling. A few years ago, Steve and Linda traveled up the East Coast without ever coming near Oriental. They sailed from the Bahamas straight to Greenland. Another time, Linda says they traveled “farther north than we ever went in a sailboat – to Svalbard.” Svalbard lies North of the Arctic Circle, about halfway between the North Pole and mainland Norway. [page] For as functionally metallic as she is on the outside, Wind Horse is comfortable and high tech within. Forward, to maximize natural ventilation, is the master stateroom. Aft are two guest cabins and the engine room. Amidships is dominated by a glass walled pilot house. Inside the pilot house (Steve and Linda Dashew photo) The master stateroom: its forward location, and massive opening hatches, maximize natural air circulation at anchor. At the front of the pilothouse is the steering station. Here an array of radar, computer screens, digital readouts inform Steve and Linda everything about Wind Horse’s operation. Speed over ground, magnetic course, port engine temperature, starboard engine oil pressure. Everything a high tech boater would want to know. The helm And herein lies the potential problem. While advances in technology and communications make it easier than ever for people to cast off their lines and put to sea, there’s a downside. “What’s been lost” says Steve, “is general seamanship.” Enter the logbook. Off to the side of all the instruments dominating Wind Horse’s helm is a binder. Not a expensive leather covered logbook but a plastic D-ring binder filled with pages headed “COG”, “SOG” and “RPM”. It’s here where Steve and Linda keep a traditional written log while on passage. Generally once an hour, more or less often as needed, they record Wind Horse’s vitals: Course over ground, Speed over ground, Revolutions per minute. Wind Horse’s log book. A black anchor ball, required of anchored vessels, is visible through the pilot house window. Deeper in Wind Horse’s interior, filed away for easy retrieval, is a collection of paper charts. While not fancy, all this paper serves as a simple backup in case of electrical failure. Or, as Steve only half jokingly notes, “we get hit by lightning….” Wind Horse also has a back up water supply organized. In rainy weather, deck water can be diverted to the main water tanks. The circular fitting is a deck fill along one of Wind Horse’s gunwals. During rain showers, it can be used to divert rainwater into Wind Horse’s water tank. Many sailors dread the thought of changing from sail to power, seeing the transition as a compromise, a sell out. What do Steve and Linda think of swapping mast and sail for engine? They’ve had 7 years to ponder it. Since launching Wind Horse in New Zealand, they’ve put over 50,000 miles under the keel. That’s the equivalent of traveling twice around the world – all without having to worry about checking rigging, stepping masts or hauling down sails in poor weather. At a certain age, they’ve learned, that definitely has its advantages. They now both agree that voyaging under power “is just easier” than sailing. Even if doing it on their terms means showing up in Greenland on a vessel that’s been mistaken for a dredge. Wind Horse anchored in the night. Russia’s nuclear energy company Rosatom has announced that its Kuzminskaya wind farm has begun delivering clean energy to the national grid.

Located in Stavropol, the 160MW wind farm is equipped with 64 wind turbines.

Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov stated: “The commissioning of Kuzminskaya, the sixth straight wind farm in the Stavropol Krai over the last few years, is yet another step Stavropol has made towards the green energy development in a partnership with Rosatom.

“As soon as late 2023, the share of wind, solar and hydro in Stavropol’s energy mix will surpass 12%. The new capacity commissioned is our joint contribution to Russia’s technological sovereignty and decarbonisation of the economy.

“With green energy, the Stavropol Krai reduces its carbon footprint by 900,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year by giving up on conventional energy sources. Stavropol will cut down its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 1.3 million tonnes by 2025.”

It noted that the wind farm has fed the first 100MW of electricity into the national power grid.

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade also confirmed that 68% of the wind farm’s equipment was sourced locally.

NovaWind CEO Grigoriy Nazarov stated: “We managed to rearrange our supply chains within a short time, having replaced the withdrawn technology with Russian know-how and supplied our production facilities with necessary parts and components. Kuzminskaya is our first wind farm fully built with the new supply chain, strengthening the technological sovereignty of the wind power sector.”
