The presentation of the awards "European Yacht of the Year" for sailing yachts and "Powerboat of the Year" for motor yachts is a major highlight every year at the boot Düsseldorf and an event that gets the hearts of many watersports fans pumping. This year's winners were selected on 21 January 2023.

Awards Ceremony 2023

At the traditional FLAGSHIP NIGHT, the major industry get-together of Delius Klasing Verlag and boot, the prestigious awards are presented in a festive act - after two years of virtual awards, finally on site again in Düsseldorf.

European Yacht of the Year: tests sailings of the nominated sailing yachts

For the 20th time, the jury members from the twelve sailing magazines from Norway (Seilmagasinet), Sweden (Båtägande), the United Kingdom (Yachting World), the Netherlands, (Zeilen), Switzerland (marina.ch), France (Voiles et Voiliers), Spain (Náutica y Yates), Denmark (Bådmagasinet), Austria (Yachtrevue), Italy (Vela e Motore), Finland (Vene) and Germany (YACHT) selected the best from the 2023 boatbuilding vintage from among 50 to 70 new or significantly reworked models. The sea trials lasting several days and setting the competition apart from all others, first took the jury to La Rochelle in autumn 2022, before the second, even more extensive test off Port Ginesta, near Barcelona, followed shortly afterwards.

European powerboat of the year: winner voting with points system.

Experts from the powerboat media outlet s had a difficult job selecting 28 nominees  across six categories from over 250 new boat models for the European Powerboat Award  2023. This year, organisers have introduced a separate category in response to an  increasing number of catamarans and electric boats. Besides the usual quality features of  a powerboat, such as workmanship and handling properties, the jury particularly focused  on the candidates’ layouts, safety and value for money. Ultimately, the implementation  of innovative ideas and concepts can also be a decisive factor.

Seamaster-award.

This year, the SEAMASTER Award was once again presented. With this honour, the two partners pay tribute to a personality who has made a special contribution to watersports. It was last awarded in 2020, with the exceptional German sailor and Vendée Globe finalist Boris Herrmann named as the recipient. In 2023, the award for outstanding and sustainable commitment goes to Ukrainian Opti coach Pavlo Dontsov for mentoring his young people in times of war. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Pavlo was in Valencia training a group of young Ukrainian Opti sailors. After he learned that war had broken out, he kept the group of children and young people together and set about caring for them simply as a matter of course – an act that reflected an international commitment to help. The jury saw this as “an example of cohesion in sport and a sign of hope in bleak times”.

Winner of the European Powerboat of the Year 2024

We did it again! This year, the Marex 440 Gourmet Cruiser won the prestigious European Powerboat of the Year 2024 award in the “Powerboats up to 14 m” category.

This year, the European Powerboat of the Year took part for the 18th time. The expert jury consists of the editors-in-chief and sea trial journalists from the eight leading European motorboat media from Norway (Båtliv), Italy (Boatmag.it), France (Neptune), the Netherlands (Motorboat), Spain (Nautica y Yates), Switzerland (Marina.ch), Austria (Yachtrevue) and Germany (BOATS).

Choosing the best of the best in the motorboat industry is an exciting process. The jury tested more than 250 new boat models to declare the winners. In addition to the usual quality features of a boat, such as workmanship or driving characteristics, the jury pays particular attention to the candidates’ space layout, safety and price-performance ratio. Implementing innovative ideas and concepts can also be crucial when each boat receives voting points.

The jury committee said, “The Marex 440 Gourmet Cruiser is perfectly designed and carefully thought out. It also demonstrates the Norwegian shipyard’s many years of experience in shipbuilding. The 440 can be considered a benchmark in this class of boats with no equal.”

The renowned prizes were presented in a celebratory ceremony at the traditional FLAGSHIP NIGHT, the big industry meeting organised by Delius Klasing Publishing House, German magazine Boote and boot Düsseldorf.

Candela C-8 wins European Powerboat of the Year 2023

Powerboat of the year featured image

We are proud to announce that the European Powerboat of the Year 2023 award goes to the Candela C-8.

This prestigious award ceremony, also known as “The Oscars of the Boat Industry”, was first launched in 2005 and has been held annually ever since. On January 21, 2023 – After two years of virtually held ceremonies- the presentation of the awards was finally back on site at Boot Düsseldorf.

This year, the organizers introduced a new category called “Electric” due to an increase in the manufacture of electric boats. The 5 candidates for this category (including the Candela C-8) are all among the best-selling powerboats in Europe.

The jury of the European Powerboat Award are expert test riders and editors-in-chief of the European powerboat media and regarding the “Electric” category, they judged the nominees specifically based on design, safety, and a good quality-price ratio. Another important factor for them while selecting the winner was the execution of innovative ideas. They also considered important quality features such as speed and handling.

Thanks to its unique industry-first hydrofoil technology features, which allow it to fly silently over the waves, the Candela C-8 was the winner of the “Electric” category by the jury.

“We’re committed to revolutionizing the boating industry by creating electric boats that are not only more sustainable and environmentally friendly, but also outperform traditional fossil fuel-powered boats. Therefore, winning the European Powerboat of the Year 2023 award is an important recognition for our work. Mikael Mahlberg, Head of PR & Communications

Out of the quiet room and into the big ballroom. After a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic, the "leading lights" of the international water sports industry came together for the Flagship Night, the award ceremony for the European Powerboat Award 2023, in the main hall of the Düsseldorf boat show. Around 500 invited guests accepted the invitation from Delius Klasing Verlag and boot boss Petros Michelidakis to celebrate the lucky winners of the coveted prizes. As is so often the case, it was a bit like Hollywood, with the only difference being that the presenter was not slapped in the face by any angry guests that evening.

There were more than 200 new models to choose from for Motorboat of the Year. It was no easy task to make a selection and ultimately choose a handful of winners. After many meetings and sometimes heated discussions, the jury of editors-in-chief and chief testers from Europe's biggest motorboat magazines agreed on the winners.

Only boats that had been tested by the jury before the vote were allowed to be chosen. As always, important factors included handling characteristics, workmanship, safety, room layout, value for money and the realisation of innovative ideas. Voting took place in five different categories. For the first time, the "Electricians", whose presence on the market has increased significantly, were also included.

BoatMag is member of the jury of the European Powerboat of the Year

The European Powerboat of the Year is the prize awarded every year to the best five boats, in their respective size category, among all the models sold in the Old Continent.

In the jury sit the directors of seven European magazines. In alphabetical order:

  • Batliv (Norway),
  • BoatMag (Italy),
  • Boote (Germany),
  • Marina.ch (Switzerland),
  • Motorboot (The Netherlands),
  • Nautica y Yates (Spain),
  • Neptune (France),
  • Yacht Revue (Austria).

The winners are unveiled during an award giving gala held on the first Saturday of the Düsseldorf Boat Show, one of the main events in the business held in mid-January every year.

The criteria which the jury bases their evaluation on space between value for money, performance, innovation. The spirit is to award the models that carry on valuable features, regardless of the brand or the market diffusion. That is why there’s five categories by length, so the large and famous motor yachts can’t overshadow smaller or less popular boats which still offer peculiar traits.

For the same reason, in the jury there’s just one member for each Country, so no nationality can prevail just for patriotism. All this means that in the end the prize will be truly deserved, and even the losers will have the privilege of having been nominated for this international award.

The categories are: up to 25 feet, up to 35, up to 45, over 45. A fifth category is reserved to displacement boats.

AZIMUT WINS THE 2024 EUROPEAN POWERBOAT AWARD

The Azimut Magellano 60 was recognized as the winner of the European Powerboat Award for the category of yachts up to 20 meters during boot Düsseldorf 2024.

At Flagship Night , the nautical industry event organized by Boot Düsseldorf with the publishing house Delius Klasing on January 20th, the winners of the 2024 European Powerboat Award were announced, spotlighting the best boats tested by the jury during the previous nautical year.

Azimut’s Magellano 60 is the winner of the “up to 20 meters” category . Presented for the first time at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, the already award-winning Magellano 60 also amazed the jury of the European Powerboat Award , which is made up of authoritative international experts from the main European nautical publications. They explained their decision to award Azimut, stating that, “the Magellano 60 impresses in the motor yacht class up to 20 meters. In addition to its successful visual appearance, the Magellano 60 is characterized by her newly developed hull, which ensures perfect handling at both slow and fast speeds. The workmanship and safety standards are also of the highest level”.

The Magellano 60, in fact, guarantees high performance with the efficient Dual Mode semi-planing hull , which cruises in total comfort at low speeds and can reach higher speeds, all the while mitigating the impact of waves and optimizing the yacht’s consumption and emissions.

At just 60 feet, she is a true crossover of the sea , complete with all the comforts appreciated on long voyages. The elegant external lines traced by Ken Freivokh combine with the large spaces on board; the most characteristic part of the Magellano 60 is the stern, which is transformed into an Infinity Terrace with a transparent parapet that offers visual continuity with the sea. Additionally, the natural extension of the Main Deck to meet the cockpit helps to harmonize the experience of the yacht with nature.

Today, the Magellano 60 is also synonymous with reduced emissions , because she is the first boat in the Azimut fleet to run on HVO , the biofuel produced by Eni Live (Eni Sustainable Mobility) with 100% renewable raw materials*. According to the results of the tests carried out by the Shipyard, this biofuel, combined with the Dual Mode hull, supports high levels of performance and a reduction in well-to-wake CO2 emissions of more than 80% compared to a yacht of comparable size powered by fossil fuels.

EDORADO 8S GEARS UP FOR PRESTIGIOUS NOMINATION: EUROPEAN POWERBOAT OF THE YEAR 2024 AWARD

Dordrecht, The Netherlands October 13, 2023:

• From Scaleup to International Recognition • What sets the Edorado 8S Apart • Not just a flying boat • Here to change the game

Press Kit Download Elements

Edorado, the pioneering scaleup in the world of eco-conscious marine technology, is on the cusp of making history with its flagship product, the Edorado 8S luxury electric hydrofoil powerboat. The electric sensation has been nominated for the highly anticipated European Powerboat of the Year 2024 Award in the Electric category, marking a significant milestone for the young company.

Edorado’s journey from scaleup international recognition is a testament to its unwavering dedication to sustainable innovation in the maritime industry. The Edorado 8S has been turning heads with its cutting-edge design and eco-friendly performance, which has made it a strong contender in the Electric category.

This nomination not only demonstrates industry acknowledgement but also showcases the progress made by Edorado in a relatively short period. As a scaleup, Edorado has shown the world that it is possible to push the boundaries of luxury boating while remaining eco-conscious.

WHAT SETS THE EDORADO 8S APART

Electric performance.

The electric performance of the 8S sets it apart from other electric boats, excelling both in range and speed. With an impressive top speed of up to 74 km/h, it reaches one of the highest speeds achievable by electric boats, making it a thrilling choice for enthusiasts.

Build Quality

The Edorado 8S features an unparalleled level of build quality, with not a single screw, bolt, or cable visible, ensuring a sleek and elegant appearance. Beyond what meets the eye, the attention to detail ensures that everything on the inside is impeccably organized, neatly tucked away, and thoughtfully designed. There are no rough edges, no loose cables, and no loose parts, making the 8S a masterpiece of craftsmanship and a testament to the pursuit of perfection.

Edorado’s meticulous attention to detail not only enhances aesthetics but also significantly contributes to safety, making it an ideal choice for families, including those with children, by eliminating potential hazards and providing a secure and enjoyable boating experience.

Patented Safety System

The Edorado 8S stands as one of the safest electric hydrofoil powerboats in existence, thanks to its innovative patented safety system. Unlike traditional vertical foil retraction mechanisms, the Edorado 8S features a pioneering design where the front foil pivots to the back upon impact, ensuring the smoothest landing possible in case of collision with an object. This groundbreaking system not only enhances safety but also guarantees peace of mind for passengers, making the Edorado 8S a top choice for those prioritizing security on the water.

Superior Hydrofoil Configuration

The 8S features a superior hydrofoil configuration known as the Canard configuration, setting it apart from conventional designs. This innovative approach places the stabilizing foil at the front of the boat, providing exceptional stability and control even at high speeds. This configuration not only enhances the 8S’s performance but also offers a smoother and more responsive ride, making it a game-changer in the world of electric hydrofoil powerboats.

NOT JUST A FLYING BOAT

The Edorado 8S is far more than just a flying boat; it symbolizes Edorado’s commitment to making fast boating green and sustainable. Their mission is to leave a lasting legacy of a cleaner world for generations to come. The 8S is the embodiment of this vision, showcasing that speed and environmental responsibility can harmoniously coexist, setting the course for a better, more sustainable future.

HERE TO CHANGE THE GAME

The European Powerboat of the Year Awards is an influential recognition within the maritime industry, and Edorado’s nomination is a clear indicator of the company’s rise in the sector. The reason to nominate the Edorado 8S goes beyond its remarkable features; it’s about Edorado’s mission to change the game. The 8S represents their commitment to revolutionizing the world of fast boating, making it green and sustainable for the betterment of future generations. While its electric performance, impeccable build quality, enhanced safety, patented safety system, and superior hydrofoil configuration set it apart from the rest, the 8S is, above all, a symbol of their unwavering dedication to harmonizing speed and environmental responsibility, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future on the water.   Godert van Hardenbroek, Founder & CEO at Edorado, expressed his excitement about this milestone, saying, “Being nominated for the European Powerboat of the Year 2024 Award is an honor for our company. It showcases our dedication to sustainability and innovation. We believe this recognition will further propel us toward our goal of becoming a leading name in eco-conscious fast boating.”

As we eagerly await the announcement of the winners in early 2024, Edorado invites boating enthusiasts, eco-conscious consumers, and industry aficionados to follow the journey and stay connected with the latest updates on www.edorado.com.

On Luxurious Ibiza, Essential Workers Are Forced to Live in Tent Cities

The Spanish island fills beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs with wealthy tourists. But its teachers, firefighters and police officers can’t find a place to live.

A man in a black t-shirt and a woman in pink pants stand outside a tent surrounded by trees.

By Benjamin Cunningham

At 1,900 euros a month, the rent was not cheap. But Alicia Bocuñano still felt fortunate to find an apartment on Ibiza at that price. As a taxi driver pulling 16-hour days, Ms. Bocuñano, a single mother who grew up on this Spanish island, figured that a surplus from the busy summer months might be enough to make the rent.

But her would-be landlord wanted six months of rent plus a security deposit up front — close to €14,000, or about $15,300, in one shot. Though not quite legal in Spain’s tightly regulated rental sector, such demands are common on Ibiza, where wealthy tourists fill beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs while the people who work in those places — not to mention the island’s teachers, firefighters and other essential workers — can’t find a place to live.

In lieu of a new apartment, Ms. Bocuñano, 38, spent a frightening two weeks sleeping in her car, then three months in a tent with her 10-year-old son, Raúl, by her side, before buying a used caravan in June. For a couple of months, she stationed the Caravelair-brand trailer in Can Rova, an ad hoc village of tents, shacks and campers on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, just behind a dealership selling expensive powerboats. “When we first came here it was cold,” she said. “Like, very cold.”

Tent cities began popping up here in 2023, but they have mushroomed in size and number this year. Can Rova, the largest of three major camps in and around the capital, was home to some 280 people this summer. On a recent July night, six people and a dog were bedding down on the floor in Ms. Bocuñano’s caravan.

Many Can Rova residents said that, with nowhere else to go, they hoped to stay indefinitely. But on July 31, the police made good on a court order to clear the camp, which had been erected on private land. (The owner is currently embroiled in an array of zoning and legal disputes.) Many said they planned to relocate to one of the other camps, even as those sites lacked the electricity, water and perimeter fence that made Can Rova accommodating.

Ms. Bocuñano was detained by the police during the mass eviction, and may face a fine.

In much of the world, homelessness correlates with a lack of work. But not on Ibiza, where the jobs are plentiful and the booming tourism sector depends on itinerant workers (with varying immigration status). Though seasonal labor has long strained the housing supply for a few months each year, the shortage now looks more structural.

“People who work every day to care for their children have no place to live,” Ms. Bocuñano said.

The rise of remote work and a surge in short-term rentals have erased many apartments from the market, compounding existing shortages caused by land-use restrictions on an island prized for its natural beauty, and by poor public policy that followed the burst of Spain’s housing bubble in 2008.

“It is fundamental,” said Carme Trilla, an economist and former director of housing policy for Catalonia, the Spanish region on “the peninsula,” as islanders are wont to say. “By definition they have to live there, and it’s not only price but also availability that is a problem.”

Ibiza’s deepening housing crisis came slowly at first, and then all at once. The island’s brand — “sun, beaches, nightlife,” as one broker put it — blossomed in the 1960s and ’70s as bohemians congregated on this Balearic Island. The flower children gave way to disco, and bell bottoms were pushed off the dance floor in the 1980s and 1990s by rave culture. By the 2000s, Ibiza had secured its reputation as a mecca for electronic music and luxury escapism.

“It is the only place in the world where you can see the top DJs in the world in top venues every night,” said Yann Pissenem, C.E.O. and owner of the Night League, parent company to Ushuaia and Hi, two of the island’s hottest clubs.

The island’s year-round population of 160,000 is double what it was 20 years ago and growing. During peak summer months, more than a million people make merry on the island at any given time, with upscale tourism putting still more pressure on housing.

Ibiza is an extreme example of a larger phenomenon in Spain, where about 12 percent of the gross domestic product comes from tourism. A recent report found that in 306 cities and towns considered tourism draws, rents are an average of 75 percent higher than the national average — the largest gap ever. Already this summer, thousands of protesters have turned up in other vacation spots including Malaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands to demonstrate against the excesses of tourism.

Ms. Trilla, who now runs Habitat 3, a foundation that works to facilitate subsidized housing, said that on Ibiza, the crisis has been intensified by a new spate of discount airline connections to European capitals, and by more online platforms renting apartments to foreign visitors. The median price for a home on the island is now €558 a square foot — three times the national average and more than double the average in Madrid and Barcelona.

Three-quarters of prospective buyers on Ibiza are looking for a second home, while another 15 percent want an investment property, said Paloma Pérez Bravo, C.E.O. of Sotheby’s International Realty in Spain. So on an island with inadequate housing and limited buildable land, many homes sit vacant for much of the year. And since the pandemic, she added, there’s been more demand from buyers who want to live on the island year-round. “Ibiza is a good investment because the prices never stop rising,” Ms. Pérez said.

On a recent afternoon just before the demolition at Can Rova, residents related stories of crammed studio apartments where people would sleep in shifts on so-called “hot beds” for about €300 a month.

Maria Fernanda Chica, a 34-year-old Colombian who is awaiting working papers, lived in one such apartment while cleaning luxury homes for cash. “I couldn’t cook food when I needed to,” she said of the conditions. “At best I could use the kitchen once per day.”

This summer, she was living in a makeshift structure in Can Rova with her partner and teenage son. Most of the residents there rented plots for between €350 and €450 a month, plus €50 euros for water and another €50 for electricity. The residents were responsible for digging their own septic systems. A good number had built shanties from plywood, shipping pallets, AstroTurf, tarpaulins and other basic materials.

Jonathan Sanchez, 33, and his girlfriend Sandra Velasquez, 41, sleep in a tent among a few dozen others in another informal settlement. Mr. Sanchez, who was born on Ibiza, works construction by day. Ms. Velasquez, a Colombian émigré lacking work documents, works nights cleaning for €7 an hour.

“I don’t even remember the last time I went to the beach,” said Mr. Sanchez on a recent night. His T-shirt said “Ants” — the name of the party that Mr. Pissenem hosts on Saturdays.

The couple charge their mobile phones at bus stops and draw water from a tap in a nearby cemetery. Most of their neighbors are seasonal workers from Morocco who decamp after the summer season. Mr. Sanchez has been in his tent for 14 months. His co-workers have no idea where he lives. “It’s not that I am embarrassed,” he said. “I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”

Whenever campers like Mr. Sanchez are forced to move on, the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, will likely play a role (as they did in the Can Rova eviction). But many of the officers are themselves caught in this housing crisis. At the height of tourist season, there were 17 vacant Guardia Civil positions on Ibiza. Many new recruits avoid work on the island and rotate out when they can find an opening elsewhere in Spain, said Tomas Quesada, a Guardia Civil officer and union representative. Starting salaries are just €1,800 a month, and the monthly €94.63 cost-of-living bonus makes little difference.

“It is leading to the desertification of public services,” Mr. Quesada said. “We have the right to be able to live.”

Nurses and doctors face a similar reality. So do teachers, some of whom commute daily by airplane from other islands to save money. “We don’t have the same level of public services here in Ibiza,” said Joana Tur Planells, a union representative for teachers.

Land will always be limited on a 220-square-mile island, but there is an emerging consensus that government intervention is needed. In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, where Can Rova was located, City Hall plans to allocate 54,000 square feet of public land for housing construction over the next few years. Policy documents call for increased emphasis on the construction of multifamily dwellings and a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals.

Carmen Ferrer Torres, Santa Eulalia des Riu’s conservative mayor, points to plans to break ground on the construction of 60 smaller rental apartments — a fraction of the units needed to ease the strain.

“These are important, urgent problems with solutions that will take longer than we have,” the mayor said. In the meantime, her party also advocates further liberalizing rental markets, betting that streamlined evictions for scofflaws could free up stagnant housing stock. Ms. Ferrer was on site supporting the July 31 clearance of Can Rova.

But for Ms. Trilla, the housing economist, the big picture solution is clear. “It’s necessary to prioritize public housing for essential workers,” she said, adding that the problem is not just housing but the price of land. Basically, public money is needed to buy private property at market prices.

She pointed to a series of policies in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, that might ease short-term housing supply, including one that would temporarily loosen zoning rules so officials could break up single-family homes into multiple apartments. Barcelona is also phasing out short-term rentals of the type offered by platforms like Airbnb. They will be virtually banned by 2028.

On the private side, successful business owners like Mr. Pissenem, the club impresario, are wrestling with the crisis. His company has begun helping its seasonal workers find accommodations. “We all need to figure out a way to help the people that hold the island in their hands,” he said.

For now, Ibizans like Ms. Bocuñano wonder where their next home may be. For the first couple of nights after the Can Rova raid, she stayed on a friend’s couch. Her son is staying with her mother on the other side of the island. She was briefly allowed back in to Can Rova to get her personal possessions, including her caravan, but needed to borrow a vehicle to tow it.

From there, she said, “I am going to recover and put the pieces back together.”
