VERTIGO can host 11 crew members, including the experienced captain, Alexis Georgitsis.

The master suite has its own private lounge while all the staterooms have their own theatre system and en suite bathroom facilities.

VERTIGO offers a jacuzzi, spa tube, air-conditioning, gym, WIFI, satellite TV, and sky lounge with a bar and entertainment area. Her sundeck has sun loungers, a bar, and a retractable hard top.

  • Year 2011 / 2019
  • Builder Alloy Yachts

VERTIGO is one of the most impressive and adventurous sailing superyachts in the charter fleet.

This multi-award-winning luxury superyacht was built for extended cruising with children but has plenty to entertain guests of all ages.

Interior Design & Engineering

Built by Alloy Yachts in 2011, VERTIGO became the largest sailing yacht built in the Southern Hemisphere at 67.2 metres long.

She’s been meticulously maintained since then, with a 2018/19 refresh bringing the VERTIGO sailing yacht back into as-new condition.

Her Philippe Briand-designed exterior balances a plumb bow and dark hull with a sleek, low-profile superstructure that looks streamlined and strong.

The interior of the VERTIGO yacht was penned by Christian Liaigre and creates an ‘urban at sea’ ambience with sleek surfaces and a natural palette of walnut, creams and blacks.

You’ll be able to accommodate 12 guests across five cabins during your VERTIGO yacht charter. All located on the lower deck, the cabins comprise one full-beam master’s cabin, three doubles and one twin. There are four additional Pullman beds if needed.

Yacht Facilities & Entertainment

When you’re not competing in a regatta or racing around the waves on the water toys, you might want to put your feet up in the main salon of the VERTIGO yacht. With plenty of space for the whole party, it’s a relaxed spot where you can sit back and unwind.

When you want to get your blood pumping again, you can head to the onboard gym to work up a sweat. After an intense workout, you’ll be able to walk up the stairs and dive straight into the blue to cool off fast.

The expansive deck on the VERTIGO sailing yacht is where you’ll find an oversized Jacuzzi with retractable sunpads for you to stretch across as you soak up the sunshine. If the heat gets too much, you can simply pull out the Bimini covers or turn on the aircon.

As night falls, you can turn the deck into your own outdoor cinema.

Toys & Crew

A crew of 11 will make sure that your VERTIGO yacht charter runs as smoothly as she does.

There are three tenders available for you to use, including an eight-metre Limo tender with a removable roof.

VERTIGO also carries a range of water toys that includes sailing dinghies, kayaks, paddleboards, scuba equipment, and Seabobs. She’s even got an inflatable trampoline with a slide and numerous inflatables for towing.

PRESENTING VERTIGO

In 2011, Alloy Yachts of New Zealand launched sail yacht VERTIGO. In specific, their largest yacht to date. At 837 GRT, the 67.2-meter Alloy Yacht VERTIGO was the largest luxury sailing charter vessel. Specifically, to be built in the Southern Hemisphere. It took 29 months to build and design by Philippe Briand.

ADDITIONAL ALLOY YACHTS

Other charter yachts similar to sailing yacht VERTIGO and built by Alloy are Yacht KOKOMO , megayacht TIARA , sailing megayacht RED DRAGON , and superyacht MONDANGO .

The owner challenged Briand to design a yacht. In specific, one that is large and is “sensitive to sail.”  When sailing in strong winds, she reaches speeds of almost 20 knots. When light winds are present, she outperforms all other luxury sailing charter vessels.  She is truly magnificent.

SWIMMING POOL

The design of the exterior areas allows guests to be outside, yet sheltered from the elements. The aft cockpit has a large hard-top featuring lateral sliding windows. The flybridge is open as well but can be protected by a removable bimini top. The sun pads at the rear of the cockpit conceal a swimming pool.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The interior design is by Christian Liaigre. The lower deck layout offers four guest rooms and a large owner’s cabin aft. The passage from this cabin leads directly to the lazarette and swim platform.

The saloon on the main deck has natural light. Most surfaces are white with tinted walnut and black sandblasted wood accents. Complementary furniture has been custom design to match perfectly with the sporty spirit of the yacht.

Vertigo 220

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 29 – summer 2011

Vertigo is the largest sailing yacht ever built by New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts and the biggest ever designed by Philippe Briand.

Alloy Vertigo 220

The story goes back to 2004, with initial drafts for a 200 footer, followed by some important evolutions that have led to today’s 220. The basic challenge for Philippe Briand was to design a sailing yacht with lots of beam but that would nevertheless be fast.

To achieve both results it proved necessary to adopt a very modern hull design for which, for example, the designer chose a vertical bow, thus increasing waterline length and so optimising performance in terms of top speed both under sail and power.

Naturally, among other requests there were those that concern air clearance and draught, this so as to allow Vertigo to sail the Suez Canal. The main mast is 68 m high and draught has been kept to 5 m, but underway can be extended to 9.10 m thanks to a dagger-board extension.

So as to achieve all this, together with the high level of performance requested by the customer, the designer developed a particularly efficient sail plan, capable of maximising the potential of the yacht’s hull. A ketch rig was chosen, which, given the dimensions involved, we find good for a number of reasons, and it is nevertheless capable of guaranteeing Vertigo truly amazing performance.

Top speed under sail is 20 knots, with true winds of the same speed, whilst with light winds under 10 knots performance is still outstanding. This has been achieved thanks to a number of clever solutions, such as mains with lots of roach so as to exploit the winds near the top of the sail, where, as we all know, it’s strongest.

This makes for a truly powerful rig, especially as compared to traditional triangular sails. As you will by now have understood, there are many high-tech solutions that have been adopted for the very first time on this massive sailing yacht, but this is after all a highly innovative design, which aims to be a point of reference for the world of cruiser/racers.

For this reason, also the companies that have taken part in the project with their products, and before that the design aspects for such a mighty one-off, have come up with a number of firsts, such as is the case for Southern Spars, that have designed and made running backstays in place of permanent backstays. As to performance under power, here too the numbers are remarkable: a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 12, at which Vertigo can sail for 4,000 miles. But the many cool things that can be defined as original on this ketch are also others, such as the main lazarette amidships instead of astern, as it is in most cases.

This makes getting back on board from the tender far easier and safer. As to tenders, Vertigo can host an 8 metre in the stern garage, plus two 6 metre tenders sunk out of sight into purpose made lockers in the foredeck. Outside, there are plenty of areas where to relax, as there are inside, but there’s no doubt that the presence of a flybridge contributes to adding to open-air space.

For example, the stern cockpit has a large hard top, with hideaway side windows and rotating flaps on the roof that can be adjusted both for extra light and ventilation. The flybridge, with its sun pad, divans, bar area with coffee table, armchairs and other seating, has a retractable hide-away bimini top.

The sun pad here hides a “spa pool”. The interior is just incredibly comfortable, and designed with long range cruising in mind. The interior design and layout are by Christian Liaigre, who has created an atmosphere he himself defines as “urban at sea”.

The white on lacquered surfaces harmoniously combined with materials and accessories, over and above guaranteeing plenty of light everywhere, give the whole a sober and elegant look. There’s decidedly lots of room inside this yacht, it’s no chance that the designer was able to fit in a massive owner’s suite astern with central bed, double bathroom with WC and two tubs, vanity table, office corner, and a sofa set lengthways with coffee table and armchair.

The whole is very comfortable thanks to its size and well lit thanks to as many as 12 portholes. Just forward of the owner’s suite there are a further four cabins, two of which have an identical twin bed layout, each with bathroom en suite, plus a further two that can host up to three guests each, depending on how the beds are arranged: a double and a single or three singles. These too have bathrooms en suite with separate toilet.

Forward of this is the main lazarette mentioned above, accessible from both sides thanks to lateral openings, and at its centre partially divided by a day-head. The forward section is entirely dedicated to the crew’s quarters, which clearly shows how it’s been conceived to ensure crew comfort that can warrant a level of general wellbeing.

The galley too is in this section of the boat, alongside the crew’s mess and pantry. All crew’s cabins have their own head and lead into a central corridor that starts in the mess. The main deck is dedicated to relaxation without compromise, in effect, apart the large cockpit with dining table, sun pad, divans, coffee tables and armchairs set under the rigid top described above, there is also a large living room below the coach roof.

This section is divided into different live-aboard areas, where divans, coffee tables, multimedia systems, bar, dining area and floods of natural light all contribute to making it a very pleasant place, whatever the weather conditions one might be sailing in. The forward section of this part of the yacht holds the wheelhouse, with direct access to the crew’s quarters, a day head and the captain’s office.

Vertigo is undoubtedly a sailing ship capable of confirming Alloy Yachts’ ability to build such a giant and Philippe Briand’s talent for designing one, and for sure this time round that was quite a challenge.

Written by Mike Smith

Alloy yachts is progressing well, and as planned, in the building of sailing yacht Vertigo which is a massive 67 meter (67.2m / 220ft) long ketch rigged superyacht. The new yacht is scheduled to be officially launched at the Auckland, New Zealand shipyard at the end of 2010. Superyacht Vertigo is a Philippe Briand designed luxury yacht and the hull project was previously known by build number AY41. The yacht is now in the fitting process and has taken the name “Vertigo”. Construction of the Vertigo yacht began around two years ago in October of 2008 and the new build boat hull and fitting has been moving steadily at the experienced shipyard, almost under a veil of secrecy, until details have now begun to properly surface.

The Vertigo luxury yacht will be an important private sailing yacht launch on a worldwide scale, and the vessel is also certainly another milestone for the New Zealand large superyacht builder, Alloy. Alloy Yachts also launched their then largest yacht, the new sailing yacht “Kokomo” (AY39) at the end of 2009 which is an impressive 58.40 meters in length overall. With S/Y Vertigo the Auckland, New Zealand yacht builder shipyard is now set to break this benchmark again in late 2010, in terms of size and luxury, with the launch and delivery of the 67 m ketch, slightly less than one year down the track.

From Alloy Yachts:

Alloy Yachts is proud to finally announce to the world the project that has kept everyone guessing for quite some time. In October 2008, Alloy Yachts began building the largest sailing yacht in their yard to date, the 220’ Briand ketch simply known as AY41. The interior design of the yacht is by the uber cool French designer, Christian Liaigre who’s brief from the client was for the yacht to feel “Urban at Sea”. Phillippe Briand’s brief from the client was to make this design a performance sailing yacht capable of world cruising. AY41 (Vertigo) will be launched in late 2010.

Sailing Yacht Vertigo’s Designers:

Philippe Briand enjoys a very successful track record in designing relatively fast, sleek and good looking performance type cruising yachts. In this tradition, luxury yacht Vertigo has easy on the eye and streamlined lines from bow to stern. This grace has been accomplished despite her impressive size and the fact that a spacious flybridge superstructure has been incorporated snugly into her lines. This is helped by her vast waterline length and efficient sail plan which utilises two masts to reduce constraints on mast height (for the Panama Canal) and other rig management inefficiencies. Essentially, superyacht Vertigo is a massive private sailing yacht and due consideration has been given by her designer to allow her design to maximize and optimize the use of the wind, hence her designed sail plan. All in all, superyacht Vertigo is destined to be a powerful boat under sail and her sailing performance will no doubt impress at any superyacht rally or yacht racing regattas.

Indeed, she is expected to reach near 20 knots in 20 knots of true wind, however, actual sea trials later in 2010 or early 2011 will confirm theses figures officially. Under motor she will be able to make an impressive speed of 17 knots with a range of near 4,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Sailing Yacht Vertigo - Foredeck and Flybridge View

Sailing Yacht Vertigo - Foredeck and Flybridge View

The Vertigo yacht has an interior which was designed by Christian Liaigre. Christian Liaigre is a French interior designer who is strongly associated with furniture design. He respects and promotes the principles of understatement and simplicity and yet is known to be able to interweave a touch of poetry and natural material in his work when appropriate. His design work is considered to “have generated a creative spirit based on the use of materials such as wood weathered by the sea and the sand, as well as fine leathers worked according to the traditions of saddle making.”

The luxury yacht’s interior design colour palette called for a light and airy atmosphere using walnuts and expanses of white surfaces with darkened sand blasted woods. This background allows for the custom designed furniture to blend seamlessly with the yacht owner’s considerations and preferences. And indeed the superstructure design of yacht Vertigo (Philippe Briand) has been covered with windows which enables a life spring of natural light to illuminate the Liaigre designed interior.

The Yacht’s Luxury Accommodations:

The owner of Vertigo has a wonderful master cabin which is located to aft of amidships. In addition, four guest rooms are gathered around the core of the boat, with crew accommodation positioned further forward towards her bow. Te crew area component is large enough to accommodate for up to 11 members. Moving further to aft of the Master cabin is a lazarette garage which is to be used for the storage and maintenance of water toys, along with other peripheral marine equipment. Likewise, at the other end of the huge private sailing superyacht, in the bow, locker styled pockets have been designed and built to house a pair of 6 meter yacht tenders. From there the tenders can be deployed and launched from the deck of the bow, without reducing space and functionality of the luxury yacht’s ever treasured water interface – her aft transom area.

Alloy Yachts, one of New Zealand’s (and the World’s) most noteworthy and well respected superyacht ship building yards, is well on course to finishing and launching their largest build to date – yacht Vertigo is set to officially launch in December 2010 and she will then be delivered early in 2011 to her eager owners. It will be very interesting to see how the yacht is judged if she enters any world superyacht awards.

Extreme heat takes a toll at Colorado airshow: Over 100 people fall ill

Portrait of Julia Gomez

Extreme heat at a Colorado airshow led to at least 10 people being hospitalized and about 100 needing medical treatment on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

People visiting the Pikes Peak Airshow in Colorado Springs faced intense heat and needed medical attention during the event, Ashley Franco, a s pokesperson for the Colorado Springs Fire Department, told USA TODAY. The majority of the people were taken to the hospital because of heat-related illnesses, and a few were hospitalized because of other medical emergencies, such as seizures .

“The Colorado Springs Fire Department works and prepares very closely with the airport and event organizers when large events are held. Today, like every day, we had a plan in place in the event we needed to activate it,” said Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal in a statement. “All partners and resources at the airshow handled this incident swiftly and professionally. Their quick actions ensured people were taken care of and serious injuries were avoided."

Royal warned that Sunday will be another hot day and asked those attending the airshow to stay hydrated. On Saturday afternoon the temperatures reached the upper 80s, according to the National Weather Service.

Attendees should bring the following to the event, according to a statement released by the Colorado Springs Airport:

  • Water bottles

What to know about risk of heat illness

The following factors increase the possibility of a heat-related illness, according to the National Park Service:

  • High humidity
  • High elevation
  • Strenuous activity
  • Age- Infants, young children and people over 65 are more susceptible to heat illness
  • Heart disease
  • Poor circulation
  • Mental illness
  • Dehydration
  • Prescription drug and alcohol use

What to do when facing a heatstroke, the deadliest heat illness

There are multiple forms of heat illnesses, but heatstroke is the deadliest and most dangerous, according to the NPS.

Symptoms  of a heatstroke, according to the CDC:

  • Body temperature of 103 degrees or higher.
  • Skins that is hot, red, dry or damp
  • Fast, strong pulse
  • Losing consciousness

In the case of a heatstroke, the CDC recommends people do the following:

  • Call 911 immediately
  • Move the person suffering from heatstroke to a cool location
  • Lower the person's body temperature with a cool clothing or bath
  • Do not give the person suffering from a heatstroke water or anything to drink
