RECEIVER REVIEW: GRUNDIG YB360

YB360

Year Introduced: 1995 Power: 6 AA Batteries, AC adaptor optional Size: 178 by 120 by 40 mm Weight: 598 grams Price: 245 Dutch Guilders. Not seen in North America. Coverage: LW, MW, SW, FM

Value Rating star:

This review was compiled independently. The Medium Wave Circle and Radio Netherlands has no financial connection with R.L. Drake, the manufacturer of this receiver.

The Yacht Boy 360 is a “paperback book” portable, slightly larger and heavier than its competition, the Sony ICF-SW40. Both are designed for the discerning traveller interested in more than average performance but also not too keen on spending vast sums for minaturisation. They are designed only for broadcast band listening; neither has SSB for listening to maritime communications or radio amateurs.

The Grundig Yacht Boy 360 is slightly larger than the SW40 at 178 by 120 by 40 mm and it is heavier, 598 grams including six penlight batteries that snap into the back. The radio comes complete with a simulated leather carrying case and a book about shortwave written by Deutsche Welle’s engineering department.

The Grundig Yacht Boy 360 is made in the Peoples’ Republic of China to the German manufacturers’ specifications. Because it is slightly larger and uses 6 batteries, the built-in amplifier delivers a richer, fuller sound than the Sony. But it is more expensive to run because the batteries last about 26 hours. The AC power supply is an optional extra.

Here in The Netherlands, you pay about 30 US dollars more for the Yacht Boy 360. You get keypad tuning but no rotary tuning knob, and 40 memories for favourite stations, so twice as many as the Sony. Tuning is very simple. You tap in the frequency of a shortwave station, lets say 9 8 9 5, and then hit an enter key. The radio tunes to that channel. If you tap in 49 and the enter key, the radio goes to the middle of the 49 metre band. Tuning is in 1 or 9 kHz on longwave, 1 or 5 kHz on shortwave, and 1, 9 or 10 kHz on mediumwave. Coverage of the radio is less restricted than the Sony. For instance there is coverage of the extended portion of the mediumwave dial up to 1710 kHz.

SHORTWAVE COVERAGE

On shortwave reception starts at 1720 and goes up continuously to 29995 kHz, slightly different than specified in the manual.

There are also two timers on this radio, plus a sleep function in 10 minutes steps down from an hour. There’s a simple scanning system which stops when it hits a strong station, or you can scan what’s been retained in the memory. The radio has a lighted dial for bedside listening, and a two position tone control.

WHICH IS BETTER?

Now to the performance test. Here the Grundig is more sensitive and that means in Europe listening to shortwave after dark has to be with the telescopic whip fully collapsed. We’re quite close to a powerful mediumwave station here in Hilversum and whereas there is noticable breakthrough of 747 and 1008 kHz on parts of the SW dial using the Yacht Boy 360, these problems are not present on the Sony ICF-SW-40. The shape of the bandwidth filter on the Sony turns out to be slightly better. Neither of the radios needs an external antenna in Europe… that might be different if you are living in a low signal strength area like New Zealand.

We think the Grundig sounds better but uses more battery power in doing so and it has coverage of the extended mediumwave band. The Sony will appeal to those familiar with analogue tuning dials and infact its probably easier to jump around the dial using this method than the keypad system used on the Grundig… it depends on what you’re used to. The Sony ICF-SW40 retails in the high street at 199 Dutch Guilders in Holland, which is US$117. The Grundig Yacht Boy is more expensive at 249 Guilders, that’s US$146.

OK Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
They are closing these models out - so you might come upon a deal! I got a floor demo at Fry's for under $10 (no manual or anything else). Can't go too wrong for that!

All the reviews here are accurate on this radio. It's compact, has a good user interface and is pretty well made for Chi-Com crap these days. It's sensitive and works fine on SW broadcasts. I mostly use it for local AM and FM broadcast stations, and it's fine there as well. It does only have 6 memories per band. It runs on three AA cells. It receives FM in stereo with external cans.

It does sound somewhat "bright". It's ok for a small radio. I will probably use it as my travel radio / alarm clock.

Worst radio in my collection Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I got this free with a Universal Radio purchase, and it isn't even worth that.

Cons:

Nasty shrill sound rips your eardrums
No tuning knob
5 kHz tuning steps
Only one filter width
No SSB
Goofy frequency entry only allows freqs in whatever band it's in (this is a SW1, SW2 kind of radio)
Dim backlight does not stay illuminated
Cheap feel

Pros:

None that I could find. I like the little wire external that came with it and use it on my G6

I'm glad others had good luck with the 300PE, but I was stunned by how terrible it is. Unacceptably poor compared with the G5 and S350. Even the G6 beats it. The 400PE is a vastly better radio as well. I recommend any of those instead.

Great little radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I really love this little radio. It replaced a Realistic DX-375. FM, AM and SW are all very sensitive. Mine is very stable. I use it to listen to SW broadcasts I keep in memory. I use an external antenna and have experienced no problems. I would give it a 4 for the lack of SSB, switchable filters and coverage.. BUT I knew the abilities of the radio when I bought it and it does everything I bought it to do and does it very well! I use the radio to keep up on my French and Spanish and the audio is very clear with the speaker or headphones. The battery life is good. I don't have ANY complaints! I give it a five, because I wouldn't change it.

Great for the price Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I think I payed like 39 for mine at an office store closeout. Pretty sensetive with the built in whip. Have not tried with a long antenna to see if it overloads etc. FM sounds good. Previous poster said he had problems in urban areas but did not say if he turned on the "local" or "DX" FM switch to alleviate it. Not something that you use for serious DXing but does fine for lazy people who like digital readout and want to just tune in some of the stronger SWBC stuff. And it will pull in the 40M AM hams pretty good with the whip. AM seems to be sensetive enough-gets alot of stuff at night with the no guess tuning. Would be nice to have alot more memory channels. I keep the clock in it on UTC for SW use. I guess it is just perfectly fine, for the money. Beats the heck out of an old low tube count SW set you had to use in the 40's thru 60's! But sorry no BFO or fine tuning. 5 KHz steps on SW. Standard for SWBC.

Wow! Great for the price. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
O.K. I got this radio at Radio Shack on clearance(08-04). It was $60 so I had to buy it...

For my $60 I got-
The radio
AC Adapter
External FM/SW Antenna
Stereo Earphones (Earbud Style)
Alkaline Batteries
Soft Case
Manuals + Warranty

My first impression was very positive. It has good (but not great)AM reception, Very good FM reception and does very well on SW for what it is. Shortwave is split into 2 bands- SW1 at 2.3-7.3 MHz and SW2 at 9.5-26.1 MHz. I found the external antenna to be of marginal use in urban areas (mainly for getting out of a building, hanging it out a window works good), but out of the city it makes a big difference. Rural reception with this thing is great. The receiver is digital so you can't listen as you surf, but there's not the drift present in analog units... So it's a coke vs. pepsi thing. There are 24 presets (6 for each band) and a 'meter' button which hops SW band by band. The clock and alarm work great, as does the sleep timer. This thing has basically become my alarm clock at home and on the road. There is also a 'lock' button which locks the radio controls. (This even works with the radio off, which keeps the thing from turning on in your suitcase and draining the batteries.)

Pros- Portable, easy to use, great travel radio, Very good reception and selectivity in general (great for the price), totally feature/accessory packed and geared to the traveller.

Cons- Around strong FM signals in urban areas, there was some howling. It's a bit sensitive on FM. If you listen to close strong signals mostly, this might not be the radio for you. It's also not an AM DX'ing radio, mainly due to the lack of an external AM antenna jack. My major gripe though is not a problem, it is a wish list item- I wish there was an internal charging circuit for NiMH batteries in this radio. But perhaps I'm just too lazy to remove the batteries for charging. It does get good battery performance for a digital receiver.

In the end, I really like this radio. I don't know if I'd pay the $99 retail price. But for $60 it's a steal. If you find one at a Radio Shack it is well worth picking up. (They are still around as of 09-04.) The main things it lacks vs. the YB-400 or the Sangean 404 is SSB and continuous SW coverage. But as it was $90 cheaper, who could complain?

In addition to the shortwave receivers from the „Satellit“ series which could be used as tabletop receivers with their double conversion circuit , Grundig also offered a series of small-format travel receivers. These sets from the Yacht Boy series, mostly have a less complex single conversion circuit and are suitable for shortwave reception of the major external shortwave services.

Geography of Primorsky Krai

Primorsky Krai is located in the southern far east , in the south-eastern part of Russia . In the north it borders with Khabarovsk Krai , in the west with the Chinese Provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang , in the south-west with North Korea ( Special City of Rason ) and at the south-east with the Sea of Japan . The total length of the borders is 3,000   km (1,864 miles) and the coastline is 1,500   km (932 miles). The total area is 165,900   km 2 (64,100 sq miles) which is 0.97% of the total area of Russia, which makes it 23rd largest federal subject of Russia. The total length of the krai is 900   km and the width is 280   km. [1] [ circular reference ]

Physical characteristics, external links.

Primorsky Krai has been federal subject of the Russian SFSR and then of Russian Federation since 1991. The krai also had the numerous islands; including Russky Island , Popov Island , Rikord Island , Putyatin Island and others. The major physiographic regions of the Primorsky Krai are Sikotin-Alin (southern-half) and East Manchuria .

Relief map of Primorsky Krai Russia Primorsky Krai relief location map.png

Sikhote-Alin is a mountain range (maximum elevation: 500–1000 meters; relative elevations: 200–400 meters; absolute height: 1,855 meters). Mountain ranges with rounded peaks and gentle slopes, emphazing the wide development of dome structures here, extend as a whole subparallel with each other from south-west to the north-east till they entered in Khabarovsk Krai. They do not the snow line anywhere, but neat fields, sometimes of considerable size, are formed annually in snow inlet zones and persists until mid-summers. According to the main watershed, the Sikhote-Alin mountain region is divided into the Japanese Sea (eastern and southern) and Ussuri-Khanka (western) macroslopes, which differ from each other in the structure of the relief and natural and climatic factors. This is mainly caused by both the difference in geological and tectonic plan, and the predominant distribution on the eastern slope of circulation of wet humid air masses. The latter come from the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan in the spring-early summer period, and in the autumn-winter period, on the contrary, relatively warm, but also humid air masses prevail.

Primorsky Krai regions Primorsky krai regions.png

In the northern part are Samarginskoe and Zevinskoe, and in the south Artyomovsk basalt plateaus. Within their limits, flat table -shaped watersheds are developed, where upland bogs are often formed in depressions. Large areas are covered with larch forests with peaty and peaty-gley overmoistened soils. The latter are formed on the areal and linear clay crusts of weathering. The marginal parts of the plateau are carved by narrow river valleys. Transverse ridges and river valleys, Subsequent large fault zones, the Japan Sea macro slope is divided into a series of independent natural-climatic complexes with sufficient contrast. Southern Sikhote-Alin is especially colorful due to its rugged coastline, rocky cliffs and gently sloping sandy beaches, the wealth of natural monuments, mild maritime climate, a neighborhood of an extensive transport network and high economic development with a natural, often not disturbed landscape. All this made southern Primorye a favorite place of recreation and tourism for residents of the entire Far East of Russia and other countries of the Asia-Pacific region .

The Ussuri-Khanka macro-slope is morphologically subdivided into Central and Western Sikhote-Alin. The mountain ranges of the Central Sikhote-Alin have mainly the direction of the CER, i.e. coinciding with the general direction of the folded structures and zones of ruptures. This part of the mountainous region is confined to the most elevated parts of the massive midland with absolute overtones up to 1850 m and elevations of 150–300 m. The rivers are steep, mountainous with rapids and shallows. The steepness of the slopes here is less than on the eastern macroslope, but the abundant-scree phenomena, erosion, landslides and solifluction are also quite intense. West Sikhote-Alin consists of separate ranges of the C-B stretch, separated by intermountain depressions and dissected by wide transverse river valleys of the Ussuri, Malinovka, B. Ussurka, Bikin and other rivers. The heights of the mountains rarely exceed 1000 m. relative elevations are 50–150 m, and the slopes are gentler, compared to Central Sikhote-Alin. At the foot of the ridges developed non-surface surfaces, composed of deluvial clays.

The East Manchurian Plateau enters the limits of the Primorsky Territory with its eastern component and is divided into three parts: Border and Khasan-Barabash mountain areas, as well as Borisov basalt plateau. The latter is largely similar to the Artyomovsky and other plateaus described above. But the border and Khasansky mountain areas - this is a typical lowland - hills. The border region is a system of low (absolute elevations - 600–800 m, relative -200-500 m) mountain ranges, which descend towards Lake Hassan, passing into a hilly-ravaged plain. At the same time, the orientation of the watersheds is often arcuate and radial relative to the center of the lake. Hassan; it emphasizes the form of the ring structure of the same name. In the Hasan-Barabash district, the absolute marks (900–1000 m) and relative elevations (300–600 m) are noticeably higher. The main mountain range "Black Mountains" arched to the Amur Bay. The valleys of most watercourses are open to the southern and southeastern moist sea winds, which leaves a peculiar imprint on climate, vegetation and soil. The river beds are overloaded with alluvium, the amount of which increases in the lower reaches due to the general stretching and subsidence of the Earth's crust along the edge of the continent, and due to the accumulation of catastrophic floods. As a result, a low-lying plain with a width of up to 10   km was formed on the coast. Over its flat marshy surface with many lakes and oxbows, remnant mountains up to 180 m high rise in places (Pigeon's Rock Mountain, etc.) rise in places by lakes and oxbows.

In the inner part of the West-Primorye Plain Region, the total area of which is 20% of the territory of the region, is Lake. Hanka Around it is the lowland of the same name - swampy lowland spaces (absolute elevations up to 200 m), separated by wide river valleys. In the northern and southern continuation of the Khanka lowland, the Nizhne-Bikinskaya and Razdolnenskaya plains are distinguished, formed by the valleys of large rivers: the Ussuri, Bikin, Alchan, and Razdol'naya.

The climatic conditions of the region are largely determined by its geographical location - at the junction of Eurasia and the Pacific Ocean. In winter, cold continental air masses prevail here, and in summer cool oceanic masses. At the same time, a “mitigating” effect, especially on coastal areas, has a monsoon climate: cool spring, rainy and foggy summer, sunny dry autumn and little snow with winds winter. In the central and northern regions of the region, the climate is more continental. The total annual precipitation is 600–900   mm, most of which falls in summer. The cold Primorye Current, which causes long-lasting fogs, runs along the coast from the north-east to the south-west.

The longest river is Ussuri , the source of the river is located on the slopes of the Snezhnaya mountains. The most of the Ussuri flows between the border of China and Russia. The other largest rivers are Bolshaya Ussurka , Malinovka and Arsenyevka rivers .

The climate is temperate, monsoon . Winters are dry and cold with fair weather. Spring is long, cool, with frequent fluctuations in temperature. Summers are warm and humid, during the summer months there is a maximum amount of precipitation, in some areas up to 90% of annual precipitation. Autumn is usually warm, dry, with clear weather. In summer, southerly winds prevail from the Pacific Ocean, and in winter, northerly winds, bringing cold but clear weather from continental regions. The main feature is heavy precipitation and fog in summer. Summer is the time of typhoons, these tropical cyclones visit the region every year, sometimes causing great damage to the infrastructure of the region and agriculture . The average July temperature is +17 ... + 26   °C.The coldest summer in the region is on the East coast of Primorye because of the cold Primorsky Current, on the coast of the Tatar Strait . The hottest on the Khanka Plain. The absolute maximum of +41   °C is registered in the Border region . The average January temperature is from –8   °C to −18   °C on the coast, which, paired with humidity and winds, lowers it by 2 times, and in continental areas with a drier climate, the temperature sometimes reaches −38   °C, but wind weaker.

The warmest winter is in the south of the Khasansky district and on the East coast, the coldest is in the mountainous regions of the central and northern part of the region. The absolute minimum of −49   °C recorded in the Krasnoarmeysky district near the village of Glubinnoye is related to the temperature inversion in the intermountain basin. The coldest months are December, January and February. The warmest are June, July and August in the continental regions; July, August and September on the coast. Precipitations are 600–900   mm per year.

In the Primorsky Territory, four districts: Dalnegorsky , Kavalerovsky , Olginsky and Terneisky , as well as the urban-type settlement of east Krasnoarmeysky district, the village of Boguslavets, Vostretsovo, Dalniy Kut, Izmaylikh, Mill, Roshchino and Taiga in the district are equal to the districts of the Extreme North.
