The Best River Cruises in New Jersey for Seniors

A pontoon boat travels the Navesink River.

New Jersey is known for its Atlantic shoreline, but it also boasts some of the most spectacular rivers in the country. In fact, there are more than 240 rivers, streams, and creeks crisscrossing the state’s diverse landscape. Exploring them is as easy as hopping aboard one of the many river cruises in New Jersey.

The waterways are ideal for easy-going pontoon boat rides, sailing, and other water activities. But it’s the river cruises in New Jersey that let you ride in style, enjoying live music, good food, and festive drinks as you take in the history and natural beauty you see along the way. Of the hundreds of waterways around the state, these 11 are considered  “top” rivers:  Hudson, Delaware, Passaic, Ramapo, Raritan, Tuckahoe, Hackensack, Manasquan, Rancocas Creek, Mullica, and Navesink. In fact, The Atrium at Navesink Harbor, one of the country’s premier senior living communities, is located on the shores of this picturesque waterway.

The Benefits of Living by Water

Anyone lucky enough to live near the water already knows the benefits of “blue space” — as it’s called — and it’s not just a gut feeling. Research has proven that proximity to water is associated with many positive measures of physical and mental well-being, including less anxiety and depression. Just being near the water has been proven to be restorative.

Residents of The Atrium at Navesink Harbor in Red Bank, New Jersey, get to enjoy this feeling every day, whether they’re fishing, boating, or just sitting in a comfy chair overlooking the water while enjoying morning coffee or happy hour with friends. There’s no end to the many ways to get close to the water, but one of the most enjoyable is to schedule an outing on one of the many river cruises in New Jersey. You’ll find options for watching the sunset, dancing, listening to live music, and more. You can also charter a boat for private parties and celebrations. Milestone anniversary or birthday, anyone? If you’re ready to cruise, here are a half dozen of our favorite river cruises in New Jersey to check out.

Six River Cruises for Seniors in NJ

1. the river lady.

The River Lady is a 150-passenger, 85-foot authentic reproduction of a paddle wheel riverboat that cruises the Toms River and Barnegat Bay. As one of the most popular river cruises in New Jersey, it operates a full schedule during the summer months, with public cruises running each week. There are sightseeing, lunch, and dinner excursions available, and the boat can be rented for private parties.

2. Classic Boat Rides

Classic Boat Rides offers cruises on two boats: the Navesink Queen, a historic paddle wheel with an open-air deck, and the Mariner, a Chesapeake Bay Dead Rise wooden boat. Like many river cruises in New Jersey, the embarkation port is the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina. Several types of day cruise options (sightseeing, sunset, live music, etc.) are available for trips along local waterways.

3. The River Queen

Launched from Brielle, New Jersey, The River Queen will have you floating along the calm inland waters of the Manasquan River, Point Pleasant Canal, and Barnegat Bay. Lunch, brunch, and dinner cruises are available, with special holiday outings to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and July Fourth. But the most popular option is the 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise, which offers interesting narration while you tour the beautiful landscape and homes along the Manasquan River.

4. Teal Cruises

Teal Cruises tours the protected waters of Sandy Hook Bay via its flagship vessel, The Festiva. While it does offer open cruises for the public, this operation specializes in chartered cruises for just about any type of celebration, from weddings to anniversary parties, and more. The boat has a full kitchen to provide lunches, dinners, and cocktail hour fare. Embarkation port is the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina.

5. Majestic Harbor Cruises

Majestic Harbor Cruises mainly operates out of New York, but does offer one exceptional cruise launching from Lincoln Harbor Marina in Weehawken, New Jersey. The Fall Boat Cruise on the Hudson River takes passengers on a 3-hour journey up the river to take in the rolling hills and stunning fall foliage while enjoying a lunch featuring penne rigate, baked tilapia, and chicken francaise.

Riverfront Living in Red Bank, New Jersey

Waterfront living is a state of mind — and we fully embrace it at The Atrium at Navesink Harbor, which offers sweeping views of its namesake river. We even have our own pontoon boat that residents use to get on the river as often as possible, enjoying sunsets, socializing, and sips of champagne. Explore everything we have to offer — including one- and two-bedroom apartments and resort-style living — and then contact us . We’d love to show you what life on the water is all about.

Classic Boat Rides LLC

Navesink Queen

The queen of classic boat rides.

The newest addition to our small fleet is the Navesink Queen – she is Coast Guard inspected to carry up to 150 passengers (120 max for a celebration) and is docked in Atlantic Highlands at Franks Pier in slip 65.

What is it?

A Paddle Wheel Boat (Formerly the Elizabeth River Ferry II).  Capt. Dannie Schade and his wife Vicky purchased the paddle wheel boat in January of 2019. They brought her up from Norfolk Virginia in February and then spent the winter and summer of 2019 getting her ready to become part of the Classic Boat Rides fleet.

What have we done with her?

Since the purchase, much work has been done to this beauty to restore her to her original glory.  Plus, we’ve enhanced the ship in many ways.  Since her original route with her former owners, (Hampton Roads Transit) was less than half an hour, the boat did not have bathrooms, so, we had to build and install brand new ones. Then, of course, we had to do a new stability test and a bunch of other inspections with the Coast Guard before she received a new COI (Certificate of Inspection) to start carrying passengers.

We also installed a new canopy cover on the 2nd-floor deck and refinished the entire boat with fresh paint.  Since this is a fun boat, we also added a new sound system and a full-service bar.

There are also two 57 inch TVs in the main cabin for your picture scroll, videos or to catch the game.  (or to view the live music on the 2nd deck)

On the interior main deck there is Booth and table seating for up to 40 people. – On the second deck we can customize the space per your needs. 4 picnic tables and 8 6 foot benches. Any or all of the picnic tables can be removed for an open floor plan for dancing etc. There are radiator heaters on the main deck. The 2nd deck is open-air with a canopy for shade. The bow decks on both levels are in the open air. A great spot to enjoy the sea breeze and passing sights.

How did we end up getting this boat?

We actually won the boat in an online auction that was published on the front page of “Boats and Harbors”.  After placing the initial bid we checked the online auction site the next day and saw what we thought was a much higher bid than ours. Our hearts sank, as hopes of owning a new paddle wheel boat were dashed… Fast forward to six weeks later and we received what seemed like an odd call from the auction company saying “congratulations – you’re the Winning Bidders”.  When we inquired about the other bidder we were told we were looking at was actually OUR bidder number and not the high bidder price of the boat.  So we were the winners of the former Elizabeth River Ferry II. In her past life, she ran service between Norfolk and Hampton Roads Virginia – just a 20-minute ride across the river.  The Ferry boat was well maintained but not necessarily loved. We have been giving her some Classic Boat Rides love since we took possession and will continue to do so.

What’s in the name?

We got the idea for the name of the boat from my wife Vicky, who is from England, where they have a Queen (once named Elizabeth). We also like to cruise on the Navesink River. We also like the Classic Movie African Queen. So we came up with Navesink Queen. Also of note, our 40 passenger boat the MARINER was built in Deltaville Virginia, and ironically was once named the Navesink Queen.  Also, Vicky’s’ Mums name was Elizabeth (Elizabeth River Ferry). We had been searching for a bigger boat for several years and finally the stars aligned and we found the “Queen”. We look forward to having your friends and family aboard soon.

My friend and I went on their luncheon cruise, and it was very nice. We cruised down to Barnegat Bay and back. The lunch was delicious, and we had a nice sunny day. We saw some beautiful and colorful sailboats, and some very nice houses on the banks. I would definitely recommend it for a nice outing!

Very nice dinner cruise! The staff was friendly and efficient, food ok, scenic tour of Tom's River and Barnegat Bay. Very clean bathroom, onsite and across the street parking, lots of fun.

Overall, I would say this was a good experience. The River Lady itself was comfortable and well set up. We got an excellent table for a lunch cruise on the upper deck, right along the railing. It was a beautiful day, the staff was very attentive and the food was ok. There were reasonable rolls and salads brought over right away as we started on the cruise, followed by a salmon dish (the salmon itself was quite good, the side potatoes and veg mix were meh), and then for dessert, there was cheesecake and coffee. The two negatives of this experience: 1. It was a windy day and while nobody can control the weather, there were not a lot of options to cut down on the wind. We were seated right near a door, that when closed , DID cut down on the wind but there was no way to secure it closed so it kept SLAMMING back open, due to the wind. 2. This was advertised as a historical cruise, meaning, I thought there would be some narration in regard to the history of the area or this waterway or something similar. Instead, there were two unintelligible bursts of narration that did not sound historical in nature at all.

Photo of Jersey M.

This was so fun as a date! Highly recommend reserving a seat upstairs however. Main cabin had great staff, but all the views come from up top. Our cruise had mostly 60+ aged people on it. Only a couple children, which was nice to not have kids running around or screaming. Beer + wine is available for purchase (not included in your ticket.) The food was mediocre but really you're paying for the view. (Salad dressing was actually BOMB! Rolls would've been 1000x better if they were warmed up.) They order catering from Luigi's in TR. Take the 6pm cruise out. You'll get back between 8 and 830, providing a beautiful sunset backdrop.

We had a delightful afternoon aboard the River Lady celebrating birthdays, a retirement and fathers day all wrapped into one celebration. The entire cruise was about 2 1/2 hours. Firstly, the staff on board are wonderful. We were greeted by the Captain as we boarded for our Historical Lunch Cruise. Once on board, the servers have everything down to a science on taking drinking orders as well as serving the meal and dessert. In addition to the historical narration, they Captain makes a special announcement acknowledging the celebrations on board. We were on the upper deck which offered a nice, open unobstructed view of the bay. Unfortunately, we were not able to hear much of the narration. There was a large party seated next to us who were very loud and constantly talking. We really enjoyed the lunch. There was a choice of 4 entrees (Chicken Marsala, Chicken Francese, Pesto Salmon and Penne Vodka). When making the reservation, I had to select each persons choice. Iced tea, water, coffee, and dessert (cheesecake - which delicious) along with gratuity are included in the reservation price. On board alcoholic beverages can be purchased.

I had no idea this was even a thing here in NJ. I mean, I've lived here 9 years, and found out about it, it just goes to show... you learn something new everyday. So hubby, Mini-Me and I chose the sunset cruise. We arrived at 5p, boarding is prompt at 5:30p, do not be late. Parking lot is small, to plan ahead and there is no parking charge after 5pm. When you buy your tickets, you have the opportunity to choose your meal entrée. They also offer a bar with beer, wine, soda and tea. They do not serve any alcohol until the boat pulls away from the dock. There are two seating area's, if you have trouble with stairs, choose the bottom deck, you can still see the sunset. The dinner cruise is really relaxing and informative, you do meet new people and I think that's really nice, if you are a people person. We truly enjoyed learning about Toms River history, the homes, the land, the people, it really a wonderful river cruise.

Enjoy an evening on the water with picturesque views, dinner, and a little relaxation.

If you're looking for something fun to do this summer this sounds amazing!

Picture an old riverboat with a paddlewheel off the back. It's like stepping back in time.

94.3 The Point logo

Embark on a nostalgic sunset dinner cruise with River Lady Cruises along Toms River and Barnegat Bay for a memorable dining experience with two and a half hours on the water.

I'm always looking for fun and unique things to do in New Jersey and this caught my attention.

According to onlyinyourstate.com , " River Lady Cruises is the only place in the Garden State where you can ride a recreation of an old-school riverboat complete with a paddlewheel, and they also happen to host the best nighttime cruise in New Jersey. While the luncheon cruise is the most popular option, the sunset dinner cruise is the best option for those who want stunning views ."

The pictures look absolutely gorgeous! This is officially on my bucket list of things to do this summer.

According to their website  Riverlady.com , " The iconic River Lady, sailing down the scenic Toms River, and beautiful Barnegat Bay, is a distinctive event venue.    She is the only genuine paddle-wheel boat in the entire state and has been the site of family celebrations, friends getting together, marriage proposals, surprise parties, and corporate events since 1989 ."

Cruises run each week during the summer months and you can enjoy sightseeing, lunch, or a dinner cruise.

Enjoy A Sunset Cruise On New Jersey’s Only Active Riverboat

One of the best parts of living in Jersey is out proximity to everything from great nightlife to big cities, to massive state parks to the shore.

The best part, in my opinion, has to be our easy access to the water; whether you want to spend a day out on the sea fishing, going kayaking, or taking those jet skis out on the bay, there's nothing more Jersey than spending time on the water.

105.7 The Hawk logo

When I was a kid, one of the most fun things we'd do when we would visit the shore was take my grandfather's boat out for a sunset cruise.

We'd all hop aboard, head out into the bay, and watch the sunset, they're memories I'll never forget.

But let's say you want to enjoy a sunset cruise, but you don't have a boat, what do you do?

You have options; the Miss Barnegat Light features sunset cruises during the summer and they're a lot of fun to go out on!

But did you know that New Jersey is also home to one of the only active River Boar cruises?

riverboat cruise new jersey

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A 56-year-old woman experiencing a medical emergency was airlifted from a Carnival Cruise Lines ship by the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday night, authorities reported. The vessel, Carnival Venezia , was located approximately 52 miles east of Toms River when the incident occurred.

The emergency was reported to the Coast Guard around 7:50 p.m., prompting a consultation with the Coast Guard Sector New York’s duty flight surgeon. It was determined that the woman required a medical evacuation for a higher level of care. Consequently, a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City was dispatched.

The aircrew arrived at the ship at about 10:30 p.m., hoisted the patient aboard, and transported her to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in New Jersey. The woman’s condition has not been disclosed.
