The 39th Transpacific Yacht race will forever be known as one of the Outstanding races in Transpac history. The race was again sponsored by the Kenwood Corporation, and attracted new, exciting entries, mirroring the latest develpments of yachting technology including: ZEPHYRUS, a Reichel/Pugh 75'; MAGNITUDE, an Andrews 70' Turbo, and VICKI, an Andrews 70' Turbo. As it turned out the race would ultimately be won, however, by repeating Transpac veterans, outstanding sailing, and excellent wind conditions.

Veteran record holder, MERLIN (sporting a canting keel), and refurbished RAGTIME were also part of the 38 entries for this race. Other noteworthy entries included: all woman crews on BAY WOLF and PEGASUS XIV; and SURVIVOR, an all-HIV positive crew, willing to challenge the sea. The race was started over a 9 day, 4 start, span to accommodate the vast differences in vessel speeds. The monohull starts were: June 28th Cruising Class from 35' to 52'; July 2nd, smaller racing entries from 30' to 60'; July 5th, larger racing entries from 60' to 75'. On July 7th, the multihull racers started and EXPLORER, having sailed directly from France without an engine, barely made it on time.

Early contestants started in light wind at Point Fermin, but the wind quickly built to a strong, steady 20 knots. This would be a good year – if it held. The early leader in the Cruising Class was Fred Frye’s SALSIPUEDES, a Tayana 52. By the second start, all the entries were praying for the winds to hold and the Pacific high to stay north. Immediately, Bob Lane’s MEDICINE MAN, a highly modified Andrews 56, started setting a record pace. SEA DANCER, SEAZ ThE MOMENT, and 2 GUYS ON ThE EDGE were forced to retire with varying problems. The third start, although slow, almost immediately followed with excellent winds. Unfortunately, three new Division I yachts, ZEPHYRUS, MAGNITUDE, and VICKI, all retired with mast failures within 48 hours. With a 3 day head start on the bigger monohulls, MEDICINE MAN, on record pace, would give the big boys a true greyhound to chase, turning in a 305 mile day.

Early leaders in the larger Division I class were the Turbos, Hal Ward’s CHEVAL (1995 Barn Door Defender), VICTORIA, and PYEWACKET, and MIRAGE, TAXI DANCER, plus venerable KATHMANDU in the S/C 70, Division II. By the time the multihulls started two days later, it was apparent this would be a record breaker due in part to a tropical storm off Mexico. The multihulls led by Bruno Peyrone’s EXPLORER, a huge 86' catamaran and Steve Fossett’s LAKOTA, a Jeaneau 60', the defending Champion, began an epic battle to catch the fleet, while DOUBLE BULLET retired shortly when she lost the top portion of her mast.

In fact, SALSIPUEDES, the cruiser, and MEDICINE MAN, with their respective head starts, were also racing for “first place at the dock.” On July 10th, MEDICINE MAN passed SALSIPUEDES less than 10 miles from the finish at Diamond Head and began the string of record-breaking finishes by bettering Merlin’s 20-year old record of 8 days, 11 hours, 01 minutes, 46 seconds, by 4 1/2 hours. SALSIPUEDES would finish under 28 minutes later, winning the new Overton Perpetual Trophy for best Cruising Class Corrected Time Yacht.

However, everyone was still watching the record pace of the Turbos, led by VICTORIA’s 337 mile record 24 hour run, LUNA BARBA at 319, MERLIN at 327, CHEVAL at 331, and PYEWACKET at 336. ExPLORER and LAKOTA each sailed the first half of the 2,225 mile distance in less than 3 days.

Indeed, the big cat, EXPLORER, would overhaul and pass the record-setting monohulls to finish in 5 days, 9 hours, 18 minutes and 26 seconds, in record time winning the new Rudy Choy Trophy for best multihull elapsed time by averaging 17.2 knots, followed closely by LAKOTA.

No one waited more impatiently than Roy E. Disney, veteran of 11 consecutive Transpac races, confined to a dock-side seat due to an auto collision injury, as his PYEWACKET, skippered by his son, Roy Pat, and navigated by Stan Honey, slid into the lead of the Turbo class. Ultimately, the new two day old monohull elapsed time record would be shattered by five more boats: MERLIN 8 days, 3 hours; LUNA BARBA 8 days, 1 hour; VICTORIA 7 days, 21 hours; CHEVAL 7 days, 20 hours; and best of all, averaging 12 knots, by Barn Door Trophy Winner PYEWACKET with a new Transpac record of 7 days, 15 hours, 24 minutes, 40 seconds.

KATHMANDU, chartered by Jaconi, Hitchcock & Thompson, both arrived and corrected out 17 minutes ahead of MIRAGE in Division II. With all the records being set, another veteran, Jerry Montgomery, would have the final laugh. He chartered the ancient S/C 50, RALPHIE, and along with owner John Latiolait, won the King Kalakua Trophy, presented by the Governor of Hawaii with a 9 day, 5 hour run, correcting out (7 days, 00 hours, 15 minutes, 51 seconds) on the entire fleet as well as over MEDICINE MAN and STEALTH CHICKEN in Division III. PEGASUS XIV recorded the first placing in the final standings by an all-woman crew, taking second to ACEY DEUCY, in Division IV. Veteran RAGTIME, a Barn Door Trophy winner in 1973 finished her 11th Transpac with her best time ever. It should be noted in addition to Disney (in almost every way a participant) Avery, Durgin, Haines, Honey, Jourdane, Sinclair and Tretter, seven Directors of the Transpacific Yacht Club, were on board various racers and the three flag officers, Jones, Edgcomb and Martin were at all the starts and finishes.

In all, it was a magnificent race that set high new standards for the future.

• Taxi Dancer – R/P Design 39 – 70’ ULDB – Clarence McFarland Trophy for 1st Corrected in Division 2
• Alive – R/P Design 162 – 66’ CBTF Racer (formerly Black Jack & Stark Raving Mad ) – 2nd Division 1 and 1st Division 1 Sub-Class 2, the Clark Sweet Trophy for 2nd Place Elapsed Time and Curtis Laukea Trophy for First Foreign Boat on Corrected Time. “‘ If the boat can’t take it, it is not supposed to be in the race,’ was the answer from one of our drivers on whether we might be pushing it a bit too hard… Six relentless days of 20-25kn winds, a 430nm+ miles 24hr run and plenty of squalls for the final stretch saw us reach Honolulu in the early morning of Saturday. Reichel/Pugh’s original sled design launched in San Diego in 1988, the 70’ Taxi Dancer took, and immediately took 1st place in Class A in the 1989 Transpac and second overall—this was during the heyday of the California Sleds when Class A of the 1989 race featured 19 Sleds. She also won the ULDB 70 Class in the 1989 Newport-Cabo Race and went on to win the 1990 Newport to Ensenada Race and the Big Boat Series ULDB 70 Class in 1990, 1997, 1998 and 1999. She later won her Class in the 2010 N2E race. Thirty years later, Taxi Dancer is still winning major ocean races—a true testament to the longevity of Reichel/Pugh designs.

Phillip Turner’s Australian-based Alive Yachting team most notably won the 2018 Sydney-Hobart overall, and recently swept 2019 California Offshore races with back-to-back line honor wins in the SoCal 300 (Santa Barbara to San Diego), Coastal Cup (Monterey to Santa Barbara), Spinnaker Cup (San Francisco Bay to Monterey), and Newport-Ensenada Race.

HIGHLIGHTS OF REICHEL/PUGH TRANSPAC HISTORY

Reichel Pugh Maxi’s have held the Transpac Course Record for nearly two decades, from 1999 (Roy Disney’s 75’ Pyewacket Maxi Sled) until 2017 (broken by Comanche – setting the new Merlin trophy elapsed time record at 5 days 01:55:26). Until 2017, the record had been broken 4 times since 1999 – always by Reichel/Pugh designed yachts. R/P yachts have won the Barn Door Trophy 7 out of 10 editions of the race since 1999.

2015 – WILD OATS XI – Roy Pat Disney’s and Bob Oatley’s 100’ Canting Keel SuperMaxi Wild Oats XI had the fastest elapsed time of 6d 10h 37m 2s to win the 2015 Merlin Trophy and take first in Division 1 at the Transpac’s Diamond Head finish line. Wild Oats XI is a 100-foot custom design famous for its record nine elapsed time victories in thirteen years (2005-2008, 2018) and three overall fleet wins (2014, 2012 & 2005) in the Sydney-Hobart race.

2015 – GRAND ILLUSION – Ed & James McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 Grand Illusion was the overall winner. She was designed by Bill Lee and features Reichel/Pugh-designed keel and rudder appendages. Grand Illusion has now equaled the record for most overall Transpac wins, joining the 88′ Lurline which won the first two races in 1906 and 1908, and again in 1912. However, Grand Illusion holds the status alone for winning overall three times under the same Owner/Skipper, Ed & James McDowell.

2013 – RP74 WIZARD – David and Peter Askew’s 74’ Reichel/Pugh-designed and New England Boatworks-built Mini-Maxi WIZARD (formerly Bella Mente) finished ‘first’ in the 2013 Transpac Race winning the unique Transpacific Yacht Club’s Perpetual Trophy – a 3.5’ x 4’ plaque of hand carved Hawaiian Koa Wood – better known as the ‘Barn Door.’ This trophy is traditionally awarded to the fixed keel mono-hull employing no stored energy with the fastest elapsed time. Wizard’s elapsed time was 7 days, 7 hours, 53 minutes, 46 seconds, which was 12 hours and 13 minutes slower than Bella Mente’s Barn Door record run of 6 days 19 hours 39 minutes 28 seconds set in 2011.

2011 – GRAND ILLUSION – Ed and James McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 featuring R/P-designed appendages took first in division and first in fleet overall on corrected time.

2009 – RP100 ALFA ROMEO II – 1st to Finish (Lending Tree got a DNS!) 5 days 14 hours 36m 20s) (Moveable Ballast & Powered Winches Course Record). N. Crichton’s Alfa Romeo II, sailing in the “unlimited” class, was not eligible for the traditional “Barn Door” trophy, but instead was the inaugural winner of a new trophy dedicated by Trisha Steele, called the “Merlin Trophy”. On July 7, 2009, ALFA ROMEO II beat the MORNING GLORY record for best day’s run set in the 2005 race, by sailing 399nm in 24 hours. The next two days she broke her own best-day record by sailing 420nm and 431nm.

Wishing Reichel/Pugh racers, R/P staff David Oliver on Blue Blazes (RP50) and Dan Flanigan on Aszhou (previously know as RP63 Invisible Hand and Limit), and all competitors, safe competition on the annual 2016 Newport-Ensenada Race which kicks off tomorrow. Pictured is the RP68 Taxi Dancer, originally built for Mitch Rouse of LA, which took 1st place in the 1990 N2E Race and won its Class in the 2010 race. Taxi Dancer was a custom ULDB 70 (West Coast Sled) built and launched in San Diego in 1988, winning the Big Boat Series ULDB 70 Class in 1990 after ULDB 70 Class wins in the ’89 Transpac and Newport-Cabo Race. She then went on to win the ULDB 70 Sled Class in the 1997, 1998 and 1999 Big Boat Series. “Reichel/Pugh designs have proven over the years to perform from launch, and have the longevity to continue winning long after.” Four decades after launch, Taxi Dancer recently won the 2012 Cal Cup Regatta is entered in the race tomorrow. Monte-Carlo (August 24, 2019) – The 15th edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo marked the fifth and final event of the International Maxi Association’s Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2018-2019 and fielded fifty-one boats this year.

Miguel Galuccio’s Reichel/Pugh 84’ maxi Vera (formerly My Song ) was first to cross the finish line winning one of the Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita Trophy . Vera’s crew, including Dutch Volvo Ocean Race legend Bouwe Bekking and Olympic champion Michele Regolo, completed nearly 500 miles of racecourse (on the direct route) in two days, 17 hours and 13 minutes — smashing the record set by Esimit Europa 2 in 2015. Esimit Europa 2 is a Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ canting keel supermaxi, first launched as Alfa Romeo and is now the Australia-based Black Jack . (more…)

Sheldon, who began his sailing career as a student, commissioned Reichel/Pugh Design No. 96 Zaraffa as a dual-purpose racer-cruiser, built by New England Boatworks and launched in 1999. A rugged design, Sheldon never wanted the boat to be the cause of not finishing a race. Zaraffa competed in the 2001 Fastnet race winning class and taking 2 nd overall. She raced the Newport-Bermuda four times, claiming the 2002 Lighthouse Trophy win on the crew’s second attempt. She was also first-to-finish with overall honors on the 2003 North Atlantic Challenge from Newport to Cuxhaven, Germany, and in 2011 Zaraffa was 1st Corrected IRC 3 in the Transatlantic Race.  She has also raced the Sydney Hobart, Miami to Montego Bay, Round Gotland Race and the Middle Sea Race. Phillip Turner’s Australian-based Alive Yachting team most notably won the 2018 Sydney-Hobart overall, and recently swept 2019 California Offshore races with back-to-back line honor wins in the SoCal 300 (Santa Barbara to San Diego), Coastal Cup (Monterey to Santa Barbara), Spinnaker Cup (San Francisco Bay to Monterey), and Newport-Ensenada Race.

Reichel Pugh Maxi’s have held the Transpac Course Record for nearly two decades, from 1999 (Roy Disney’s 75’ Pyewacket Maxi Sled) until 2017 (broken by Comanche – setting the new Merlin trophy elapsed time record at 5 days 01:55:26). Until 2017, the record had been broken 4 times since 1999 – always by Reichel/Pugh designed yachts. R/P yachts have won the Barn Door Trophy 7 out of 10 editions of the race since 1999.

Reichel/Pugh’s original sled design, the 70’ Taxi Dancer took 1st place in Class A in the 1989 Transpac and second overall, this was during the heyday of the California Sleds when Class A of the 1989 race featured 19 Sleds. Thirty years later, Taxi Dancer is still racing!

San Diego, California (June 2, 2019) – Reichel/Pugh 66’ Canting Keel Mini Maxi ALIVE (formerly Black Jack & Stark Raving Mad) was first to finish (correcting to 7th) in the 5th annual SoCal 300 (300nm), following back-to-back line honor wins in the Spinnaker Cup (San Francisco Bay to Monterey), Coastal Cup (Monterey to Santa Barbara) and Newport-Ensenada. Alive also set a new course record for the 200nm Coastal Cup of 13h 48m 28s. Congratulations to owner Phillip Turner, skipper Duncan Hine and the entire Australian-based Alive Yachting team, who most notably won the 2018 Sydney-Hobart overall. Queensland, Australia (April 20, 2019) – 100’ SuperMaxi Black Jack took line honors in the 71st Brisbane to Gladstone with a time of 16 hours, 56 minutes and 33 seconds—just 2 minutes and 36 seconds outside the 14-year record it broke last year. It was the sixth consecutive Brisbane to Gladstone line-honors victory for last year’s runner-up in the Sydney to Hobart and it marked eight wins for Black Jack’s owner Peter Harburg since 2009. Dominating the Maxi Class 2 for the third year was Windfall’s Michael “Mick” Cotter, who humbly attributes much of their success to luck, however this was Mick’s seventh Les Voiles. 2015 – WILD OATS XI – Roy Pat Disney’s and Bob Oatley’s 100’ Canting Keel SuperMaxi Wild Oats XI had the fastest elapsed time of 6d 10h 37m 2s to win the 2015 Merlin Trophy and take first in Division 1 at the Transpac’s Diamond Head finish line. Wild Oats XI is a 100-foot custom design famous for its record nine elapsed time victories in thirteen years (2005-2008, 2018) and three overall fleet wins (2014, 2012 & 2005) in the Sydney-Hobart race.

2015 – GRAND ILLUSION – Ed & James McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 Grand Illusion was the overall winner. She was designed by Bill Lee and features Reichel/Pugh-designed keel and rudder appendages. Grand Illusion has now equaled the record for most overall Transpac wins, joining the 88′ Lurline which won the first two races in 1906 and 1908, and again in 1912. However, Grand Illusion holds the status alone for winning overall three times under the same Owner/Skipper, Ed & James McDowell.

2013 – RP74 WIZARD – David and Peter Askew’s 74’ Reichel/Pugh-designed and New England Boatworks-built Mini-Maxi WIZARD (formerly Bella Mente) finished ‘first’ in the 2013 Transpac Race winning the unique Transpacific Yacht Club’s Perpetual Trophy – a 3.5’ x 4’ plaque of hand carved Hawaiian Koa Wood – better known as the ‘Barn Door.’ This trophy is traditionally awarded to the fixed keel mono-hull employing no stored energy with the fastest elapsed time. Wizard’s elapsed time was 7 days, 7 hours, 53 minutes, 46 seconds, which was 12 hours and 13 minutes slower than Bella Mente’s Barn Door record run of 6 days 19 hours 39 minutes 28 seconds set in 2011.

Hot Rum Series returns to Santa Barbara Yacht Club

First round of three-date regatta to be held Jan. 6.

SANTA BARBARA — Santa Barbara Yacht Club will host the 2018 Hot Rum Series on California’s Central Coast beginning Jan. 6. The three-date race will resume with its second segment on Jan. 27 before completing the final dash. Feb. 10.

The Hot Rum Series kicks off Santa Barbara YC’s 2018 racing calendar; other regattas and championships scheduled for Santa Barbara sailors in January 2018 include Centennial Regatta (Jan. 13-14) and All Fleet Club Championship (Jan. 13).

Taxi Dancer won the first race of the Hot Rum Series in 2017, finishing ahead of Warrior , Venom and Prevail .

Venom finished the series in first place overall, followed by Taxi Dancer , Warrior , Average White Boat and Repeat Offender .

More than two-dozen sailors participated in the 2017 regatta; the number of participants for the 2018 edition of the Hot Rum Series was not available as of press time.

Santa Barbara YC will provide a course chart to all participants; charts will also be posted on placards at the yacht club’s deck.

A perpetual trophy will be awarded to the series’ overall PHRF winner.

San Diego Yacht Club recently wrapped up its own Hot Rum Series regatta, with Stark Raving Mad VIII finishing first overall. The series was held Nov. 4, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 at San Diego Bay

Staghound, Ohana, Fox and Wani Racing rounded out the series’ top 5 finishers. San Diego YC’s Hot Rum Series featured 140 teams.

Yachts setting sail in annual Newport to Ensenada race

In the words of Dennis St. Onge, “Yellow is fast.”

He’s the captain of a 1940s Ford woody station wagon-turned-motorboat that will be hard to miss at the start of this weekend’s 65th annual Newport to Ensenada yacht race.

“And yellow is going to win this year. Mark my words!” he added, rooting specifically for the 1980s, yellow carbon fiber monohull Taxi Dancer, which placed in the race’s top 10 in 2011.

St. Onge, a San Diego resident and professional photographer, has shared the waters with Newport to Ensenada racers since 1993. He uses his sunflower yellow, car-shaped boat to provoke smiles of race attendees and participants alike.

From his sunroof, he has a bird’s-eye view of the entire competition.

“I’m kind of all over the roof, which you can bet gives me the ultimate photo platform,” he said. “My main goal, though, is to never have an effect on the race other than being positive and helping people have fun. It’s kind of like being a seagull.”

Just off the Balboa Pier on Friday, more than 218 yachts will negotiate the wind and water for 125 nautical miles to a new finish line at the Hotel Coral and Marina in Ensenada.

Cruising boats start at 11 a.m., following by racing boats at 12:40 p.m.

The vessel that gets to the Ensenada breakwater with the shortest corrected handicap time, which accounts for variations in speed and ability among the sailing vessels, wins.

St. Onge’s vessel, Da-Woody, though not competing, has been deemed the event’s unofficial mascot. The boat can sometimes be seen with a nameless parrot perched atop and an 18-foot American flag trailing behind its 12-foot hull.

“I add a little color to the event, besides yellow,” St. Onge said. “The race is good, clean fun, and it’s extremely therapeutic. When I go out on my boat and see folks smiling back at me, it’s like a perfect world. If you make someone else happy, you’re happy and it makes a giant happy snowball that just gets bigger and better.”

Yellow isn’t the only fast ingredient of this race.

Lexus is giving the winner a two-year lease on a 2013 Lexus GS 350 sedan.

Starting the race are Bill Gibbs’ 52-foot multihull Afterburner; Per Peterson’s Dencho 70, Alchemy; Bob Lane’s Andrews 63.3, Medicine Man; the Tres Gordos’ Andrews 50, It’s OK; and the Reichel/Pugh 68, Taxi Dancer, owned by Dick Compton, Jim Yabsley and Tom Parker.

Missing from this year’s race, due to a sailing obligation in New York, will be Dennis Conner and his Farr 60, Stars & Stripes. His vessel was the first monohull to finish in 2011, first in its class and first overall on corrected handicap time.

“He’s sad to miss this one,” said Rich Roberts, a press officer for the race. “But a lot of folks are pleased. Dennis being absent might give them chance to win this year.”

All racers will challenge the 2009 elapsed time record of 10 hours, 37 minutes and 50 seconds, held by Doug Baker’s monohull, Magnitude 80.

They’ll also be chasing the untouchable 1998 record of the late Steve Fossett, who sailed his 60-foot catamaran Stars & Stripes through the finish line in 6 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds. To date, it is the only boat ever to finish before sundown on the same day it started.

Chuck Iverson, commodore of the organizing Newport Ocean Sailing Assn., thinks there’s a possibility of beating that unfathomable record.

“It’s a long shot, but there are a few catamarans that could pull it off this year,” he said, “and if this front goes through and the wind picks up at just the right time, there is a chance the record could be broken.”
