An excellent experience that exceeded all expectations! The staff on board were all so kind and could not have done more for us. They even produced a birthday cake with 24hrs notice from my husband! Communication was not the easiest but we got by! The food was excellent and there was plenty of it.

We had an amazing wale watching boat trip. The journey started with an early morning cruise out to the deep sea. A very solid and spacious vessel. Breakfast on board was delicious. All the crew were friendly and helpful.

We came to Mirissa for whale watching. We realized that the most popular kind of shared boat here is a large double decker with 40-150 people on board (depending on the company). We were recommended sail lanka as they have these catamarans which carry <=20 people.

We went on the yacht cruise in Trincomalee to see whales and dolphins, but we also went snorkeling too. Furthermore, this was by far the most ethical way you could see the whales a dolphins compared to the smaller speed boats, which I genuinely struggled with. However, Sail Lanka did not chase the animals or 'hunt them' down.

We spent a wonderful week sailing through the South Coast of Sri Lanka, visiting the old town of Galle, and other interesting places such as fishermen's towns and Buddhist temples. Wales watching was part of our holiday but we weren’t lucky enough to see them.

Great crew, delicious and unpretentious snacks, and super fun all round. We went through sun and storms, and although the water was a little murky the snorkelling was ace.

They were always there to help and make sure we were ok. Life vests were provided for the dinghy trip to the catamaran and for all water activities. Food was delicious and they were prepared for the rain and it meant our experience was not affected. We had fun on the net and in all the activities.

A 3 hoors during boattrip was top, a beautiful catamaran, very nice people We saw nice corals and beautiful fishes. With a snack, plenty of cold water, ... done SUPping the first time.

We went out on the morning 3 hour sailing trip and absolutely loved it. There were 2 other families with us on the trip, 6 adults and 6 kids in total. The staff were fantastic and always there to help the younger children (my son is 2 and there was also a 3 year old on board) navigate their way around the catamaran.

Superb, extraordinary, great service from a professional well trained crew and chef. We have chartered in Greece, Croatia, Tahiti and now Sri Lanka bad rage experience with Sail Lanka is equal to or better than all the other charters.

We went on the morning cruise from 9 to 12. They picked us up from the beach in front of the hotel with a small boat. There were 20 people on the ship at the same time and it didn't feel crowded at all. Drinks and a small snack are included in the price.

History of Colombo Boats

Colombo Boats has a rich history spanning over six decades. The company's journey from a small Italian boatyard to a renowned manufacturer of luxury vessels is marked by innovation, craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality.

Founding and Early Years

Giacomo Colombo founded the Colombo boatyard in 1956 on Lake Como, Italy. He started by hand-crafting wooden motor boats, establishing a reputation for quality and attention to detail. In these early years, Colombo focused on small pleasure craft, catering to the local market.

The company's boats quickly gained popularity for their elegant designs and superior performance on the water. Giacomo Colombo gave each boat its own unique character, setting the foundation for the brand's distinctive style.

As demand grew, Colombo expanded its production capabilities while maintaining its commitment to craftsmanship.

Expansion and Innovation

In the following decades, Colombo Boats embraced new technologies and materials. The company transitioned from solely wooden construction to incorporating fiberglass and other modern materials. This shift allowed for more efficient production and improved durability of their vessels.

Colombo expanded its range of models, introducing larger yachts and sport fisherman boats. Notable models included:

  • Colombo 29 Racing (1982)
  • 31 Sport Fisherman (1991)
  • Algarve 42 (2008)

The company's innovation extended to design and performance enhancements. Colombo boats became known for their seaworthiness and elegant Italian styling.

Colombo Boats in the Modern Era

Today, Colombo Boats continues to produce high-quality vessels that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The company has maintained its focus on creating boats with distinct character and sophisticated style.

Colombo's current lineup includes a range of models from 27 to 48 feet in length. These boats cater to various preferences, from day cruisers to luxury yachts .

The brand has expanded its reach beyond Italy, gaining recognition in international markets. Colombo Boats are now sought after by discerning buyers worldwide who appreciate their quality construction and elegant design .

Despite changes in the industry, Colombo remains committed to its heritage of handcrafted excellence and attention to detail.

Design and Construction

Colombo boats are known for their meticulous craftsmanship and use of advanced materials. The design process balances traditional methods with modern technologies to create vessels that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Understanding the Craftsmanship

Colombo boats showcase exceptional attention to detail. Each vessel is built with precision on Lake Como, where the company was founded in 1956. The craftsmen blend traditional techniques with modern methods.

Skilled workers shape and finish each component by hand. This ensures a high level of quality control . The company's focus on customization allows buyers to have input on design elements.

Colombo's approach results in boats that are unique and tailored to individual preferences . This level of craftsmanship sets their vessels apart in the luxury boat market.

Materials and Technologies

Colombo boats use a mix of traditional and cutting-edge materials. The company started with wooden boats but now primarily uses fiberglass reinforced plastic (GRP).

GRP offers several advantages:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Resistance to corrosion

Advanced technologies are used in the design and manufacturing process. Computer-aided design (CAD) software helps create precise plans. Modern tools and machinery assist in shaping and assembling boat components.

The combination of high-quality materials and advanced tech results in boats that are strong, efficient, and long-lasting.

Size and Beam Considerations

Colombo offers boats in various sizes to suit different needs. The beam, or width, of each boat is carefully calculated to balance stability and performance.

Typical size ranges:

  • Small day cruisers: 20-30 feet
  • Mid-size yachts: 30-50 feet
  • Large luxury yachts: 50+ feet

Wider beams provide more interior space and stability. Narrower beams can improve speed and fuel efficiency. Colombo designers consider these factors for each model.

The company also takes into account intended use, such as coastal cruising or offshore voyages. This influences decisions on size and beam to ensure safety and comfort for passengers.

Speed and Planing Capabilities

Colombo boats excel in speed and planing capabilities . Their hulls are designed to lift efficiently out of the water at high speeds, reducing drag and increasing fuel efficiency. Most models can reach top speeds of 30 to 40 knots, depending on engine configuration and boat size.

The planing hull design allows Colombo boats to maintain stability even at high speeds. This feature ensures a comfortable ride for passengers and improves overall fuel consumption.

Engine options range from 300 to 900 horsepower, giving owners the flexibility to choose the right power level for their needs. Higher-powered models offer thrilling acceleration and top speeds for those seeking a more exhilarating ride.
