A 96-year-old woman ticked off an item on her bucket list when she sailed into Victoria on what is believed to be British Columbia’s oldest locally built sailing vessel still in active service.

Dorothy Zimmerman, who came from Minnesota to Victoria specifically to see SV Dorothy, said she fell in love with the vessel when she learned of the 127-year-old boat’s restoration project.

“I’m just 30 years younger than [SV] Dorothy,” said Zimmerman, who turns 97 in October.

The Victoria-built sailboat had been sitting in a shed on Gabriola Island for more than a decade as the Maritime Museum of B.C. gathered the funds needed for a refit.

Angus Matthews, who sits on the museum’s board of directors, said he and Zimmerman struck up a lively three-year correspondence over email about the 30-foot wooden sailboat.

When Zimmerman found out that SV Dorothy was coming into Victoria, she was determined to visit.

“I’ve got to live long enough to get out here,” she said.

She would do more than just see the boat. On Wednesday, Zimmerman donned a pink puffer jacket and sun visor and steered SV Dorothy into the Inner Harbour as part of a five-person crew.

She navigated with just her left arm, as her other arm was still recovering from a broken bone.

Matthews said special permission from the harbourmaster was required to sail SV Dorothy into the harbour.

On Friday, Zimmerman, who has sailed for more than six decades, was still basking in the experience.

“When you get out there on the water, you’ve got something with Mother Nature that gets in your soul,” she said.

SV Dorothy returned to local waters in 2023 after a 21-year hiatus following extensive restoration conducted by Gabriola Island shipwright Tony Grove and volunteers at the Ladysmith Maritime Society.

Matthews said since SV Dorothy was relaunched, it has been used at yacht clubs across South Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands this summer for young sailors to train on for their first sailing certifications.

“Most of them are age 11 to 12,” he said. “It’s been wonderful just showing off maritime heritage and the vintage days of sail.”

Commissioned in 1897 by William Henry Langley, a barrister who would go on to be a clerk of the Legislative Assembly in 1922, SV Dorothy was built before construction of the Empress Hotel and the Inner Harbour causeway.

Langley owned and raced SV Dorothy for 47 years.

The vessel went through another dozen private owners before being donated to the Maritime Museum of B.C. by Kim Pullen in 1995.

Matthews said SV Dorothy is now under the care of Robert Lawson of the Ladysmith Maritime Society when it is docked in Ladysmith.

The museum hopes that SV Dorothy can eventually find a permanent home in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, he said.

But for now, SV Dorothy will be at the Inner Harbour as part of the Classic Boat Festival, which started Friday and continues until Sunday.

Close to 100 boats from across the Pacific Northwest are on display. Festival admission is a one-time suggested donation of $5 per person for the whole weekend.

All the vessels that are part of the show will sail past the Ogden Point Breakwater at 11 a.m. Sunday, a highlight of the festival, Matthews said.

Three Superyachts Visit the Dart.

This morning Dartmouth welcomed the 98m long superyacht ‘Aviva’ to our mainstream mooring buoys in the middle of the town. She joined the 66m long yacht ‘Elysian’ and regular visitor ‘Constance’, which is 47m long, to make a spectacular line up on the Dart.

Whilst superyacht calls are becoming more regular, with many yachts calling to pick up new tenders and support boats from local manufacturers Ribeye, as well as to allow their owners, crew and guest to enjoy the beauty of South Devon, this is the first time we have ever had three yachts of this size on the river. Our mainstream moorings, originally designed by the Admiralty for mooring warships, are extremely flexible and able to be configured to accommodate vessels from small yachts to cruise ships.

Aviva has a hybrid propulsion system, and arrived in port this morning entirely on battery propulsion. Arriving from Troon in Scotland, she entered the river under the guidance of our Pilot, turned at the Higher Ferry and launched a tender from the garage at the stern, before being moored by the harbour team.

Weather and circumstances depending, we expect all three yachts to remain in port until at least Thursday, giving plenty of opportunity for local people to see the boats on the river.

The Luxury Superyacht Marinas of Sydney & Melbourne

By George Bains

Australia is a country which offers an immensely diverse range of experiences for superyacht charters. Sydney and Melbourne are two thrilling city destinations for superyachts, where world-class events, luxury delights and electric atmospheres await. Both cities boast premier superyacht marinas in the centre, and here we take a look at the best luxury marinas in Sydney and Melbourne…

Sydney becomes the centre stage for superyachts during its New Year’s Eve celebrations, and there a few sights more iconic than a superyacht sailing in front of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. While Sydney is popular for day charters, there is so much to experience on longer charters throughout the surrounding cruising grounds. Superyachts basing themselves in Sydney benefit from two world-class facilities in the centre of the city.

First built to accommodate yachts for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Sydney Superyacht Marina offers large berthing facilities on the Harbour’s Rozelle Bay. Sydney Superyacht Marina has become distinguished for its exceptional standard of service for superyachts, from a personable concierge service through to fuel bunkering and on-site maintenance trades.

Speaking to Superyachts.com in February 2020 , shortly after the passing of ground-breaking new charter legislation in Australia, Marina Manager Clemens Overdijk explained his direct approach to ensuring that Captains have everything they need to be comfortable during their stay in Sydney.

Sydney Superyacht Marina is well-equipped for the increase of internationally flagged vessels that is expected over the coming years. There are 20+ superyacht berths accommodating vessels up to 74m in Rozelle Bay, while Sydney Superyacht Marina also has an extra 60m berth in the incredible central location of Campbells Cove, tucked under the Harbour Bridge.

With a backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Jones Bay Wharf is a fantastic superyacht marina based in the entertainment district of Pyrmont. Jones Bay Wharf has been used as a stunning setting for major industry events, including the Benetti -sponsored Superyacht Australia Grand Soirée .

Managed by Scope Marine, a company established and run by experienced yachting professionals, Jones Bay Wharf is home to a range of maritime clientele, including premium brokerage houses and some of Australia ’s most renowned charter superyachts.

Just a short walk from the vibrant Darling Harbour, Jones Bay Wharf is very much a part of the heritage infrastructure of Sydney. Originally built in 1919, the site was redeveloped in 2003 and now welcomes international superyachts with large berthing facilities and a host of restaurants and cafes on the wharf for waterfront dining with a spectacular view.

Melbourne is Australia’s capital of culture and events. This is a city with a distinctive style and artistic flair, epitomised by its bustling laneways which are brimming with culinary treats. For superyachts, Melbourne offers an enviable calendar of major events all-year-round. Whether visiting for one of the renowned sporting fixtures, including the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open, or simply to just indulge in the city wonders of Melbourne, you will be welcomed by centrally located luxury marinas.

The 5-Gold Anchor Melbourne Superyacht Marina places superyachts in the heart of the newly renovated Docklands area. Surrounded by charming waterfront cafes and restaurants, the Melbourne Superyacht Marina offers berthing for superyachts up to 65 metres in length.

The Docklands is a modern and lively harbour, which is overlooked by the Marvel Stadium, a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium which regularly hosts performances by global stars.

It is not just the Docklands area that has benefitted from investment. The Superyacht Marina itself has been enhanced with new features such as a contemporary lounge for visiting Owners, Captains and guests. Growing the modern standards of luxury, the Marina meets all needs for superyachts arriving to the energetic city of Melbourne.

D’Albora Marinas is a group of marinas across Victoria and New South Wales with a strong lifestyle element to enhance the superyacht experience. In Melbourne, Victoria Harbour and Pier 35 are two stand-out d’Albora Marinas for visiting superyachts.

Victoria Harbour is a full-service boutique marina in the centre of the Docklands, ideal for weekend charters in the city. Within a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s CBD, Victoria Harbour has impeccable marine facilities along with a relaxing club room to provide a sanctuary for yachts.

Pier 35 if found along Melbourne’s Yarra River, at the mouth of Port Philip Bay. Another well-equipped marina with club room and its own restaurant, Pier 35 is a favourite among guests for its authentic and welcoming atmosphere.

That changed in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, when Lantau Yacht Club became the first new marina to open in the city in more than a decade. Nearly 150 typhoon-proof wet berths, some able to accommodate vessels up to 328 feet, transformed the city into a superyacht hot spot seemingly overnight. “Having berths of that size in Hong Kong is unprecedented,” says Victor Cha, executive chairman of HKR International , a major shareholder in the marina.

And it’s not just Hong Kong that has recently made its debut as an elite yachting destination. The Town of Palm Beach Marina , always well positioned to benefit from Florida ’s yacht-rich Gold Coast, until last year had only one slip that could welcome a vessel of 200 feet. But after a nearly two-year, $40 million renovation, the city-owned marina has added the 250-foot-long Royal Palm dock, with slips for 10 superyachts, to better match the upscale look of nearby Worth Avenue. Some argue that the area’s historically sleepy, provincial vibe is what gave the classic docks their year-round appeal in the first place, but for better or worse, the new marina marks a decisive turning point, one that will see Palm Beach compete with Fort Lauderdale and Miami for the yachting set.

An even more ambitious build has turned Barcelona ’s Marina Port Vell into one of the most desirable stops in the western Med. The traditional fishermen’s neighborhood of La Barceloneta has worked hard to shed its reputation for stag-party tourism, in no small part thanks to a massive marina reconstruction that is replacing berths for small vessels with more space for superyachts. The marina will soon have 23 new berths for vessels up to 230 feet, or a total of 55 berths for superyachts. The new layout will allow that number to increase to 65 during periods of high occupancy. The marina’s Spanish Quay is nearly 1,500 feet long, giving it the ability to cater to the world’s largest boats. The facilities have made Barcelona the most desired stop on the Catalan coast, offering easy access to some of Europe’s finest beaches, 30 Michelin-star restaurants, an F1 circuit and world-class skiing in the nearby Pyrenees.

Porto Montenegro , once a sleepy backwater in the eastern Med, followed a similar development strategy, creating a modern complex—including 460 yacht berths, with another 390 in the planning stages—on the former site of Tivat’s historic naval arsenal in Boka Bay. The investment in the area included $560 million toward creating or attracting five-star hotels, luxury retail, high-end restaurants and an international boarding school. It has been a remarkable metamorphosis: A decade ago, crews were known to quit when owners insisted on docking their vessels over the winter; now it’s a ritzy, all-seasons haven—and when the Adriatic 42 refit facility opens later this year, it will cement Montenegro as the eastern Med’s foremost superyacht destination.

Meanwhile, the sprawling Dubai Harbour , along with the surrounding cruising grounds of the MENA region, has become yachting’s showpiece for the Middle East—one its developers aim to make the largest in the region. The complex has three marinas, with nearly 700 berths. The 104-berth Bay Marina, dedicated to superyachts, has docks for those up to 525 feet. Its location, in the center of modern Dubai near the Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island, is also a major plus.

Victoria’s First Super Yacht Marina Taking Shape

Victoria’s First Super Yacht Marina Taking Shape

VICTORIA – What’s going to be taking shape in Victoria’s Inner Harbour in the next few months is so much more than a marina and a pair of mid-sized office buildings. What’s actually taking shape is another key piece of the city’s ongoing effort to become a world-class tourist destination. Decades in the dreaming and designing stage, the $24 million Victoria International Marina will consist of a pair of high end business centres (6,000 square feet each) and a 28 slip marina designed to accommodate yachts of up to 150 feet in length.

“In reality this project was originally conceived more than 30 years ago. Back then Robert Evans purchased 16 acres of the Songhees land from the province and the city, essentially old industrial land on the north side of the Blue Bridge,” explained Craig Norris, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Community Marine Concepts, the owner and developer of the Victoria International Marina project.

“In about 1985 they conceived a plan for the land that included a marina and a bit of a town centre. It has literally taken this long to get shovels into the ground on this project, so we’re very excited to see it finally start to take shape.”

Having faced an epic amount of regulatory roadblocks over the years the project’s current developers (Evans has now left the project) are confident the first yachts will be tying their multi-million dollar hulls to the marina’s slips by next spring. Over time segments of the original property were sold off to other developers, land that today is home primarily to various high rise condominium towers.

In its original form the International Marina would have involved 52 slips, a scale of project that failed to receive City Hall approval. The re-imagined and redesigned concept involves two buildings with a total of just over 12,000 square feet of rentable space and a pared down 28 slip marina. “The slips will range in size from 65 feet to 150 feet, the reason being that under our Transport Canada permit we’re only allowed to bring vessels larger than 65 feet across the harbor runway,” Norris explained.

“We’d gladly take smaller boats but we can’t. We’ve essentially been forced to use the over 65 foot boats as our market as that’s what the marina was built to accommodate and service.”

Currently under construction at Blue Water Systems Limited’s facility in Delta the marina slips will be towed into place in stages and should be installed over the summer months. Prior to the beginning of the construction phase of the project some 23,000 cubic meters of material were dredged from the seafloor to facilitate the transformation of an industrial site into a world class moorage.

“This is a prime location in the middle of Victoria harbor so we expect to see a mixture of local yachts and transient vessels make use of the facility. We don’t want to become a boat parking lot. We expect it to be used by vessels that come and go,” he said.

Concerning the land based elements of the project major construction of the two buildings is expected to begin this summer. Geotechnical testing for the outer breakwater was completed in early July, so development of the marina portion can also now commence. Final construction of the project is scheduled for March 31, 2017. The east building is already fully leased out, including with an as yet unnamed local restaurant, while tenants for the west building are currently being sought.

For Norris the International Marina will be yet another world class tourist destination for visitors, much like the Bear Mountain Golf Course and Butchart Gardens. For him projects of this caliber elevate the entire city’s status as a destination and help to put the Greater Victoria area more solidly on the world’s stage.

“We want people to come in and experience Victoria. That’s when they’re coming in and spending money. That’s what brings vibrancy to the city. That’s what brings economic development to the locality, that’s what we want,” Norris said.

“There are a lot of people who want to come here but they don’t know the West Coast. They’ve heard about its beauty but there’s no infrastructure for them. Our purpose statement is all about creating remarkable experiences , that’s what this facility is all about.”

If you’ve been to Victoria’s Boom + Batten Restaurant & Cafe recently, you may have noticed the massive 208-foot sailing yacht poking out from in behind the building.

If you’re wanting to know who owns it, you’re not the only one!

Unfortunately, this $35 million dollar beauty’s owner remains a mystery.

Known as Athos , the vessel was initially owned by Dutch millionaire, Geert Pepping — the CEO of Seatrade and an influential figure in the maritime industry, before it was sold in 2022 to an unknown buyer.

With running costs of $4 million a year, it is the world’s largest privately-owned two-masted schooner and is described as “one of the most technologically sophisticated classic sailing yachts in existence” on superyachtfans.com .

It was designed by Andre Hoek and built by Holland Jachtbouw with a blend of style and luxury, and is said to be a testament to yacht design and craftsmanship.

In 2022 Athos received a bit of a lift to mark its next journey.

The refit at Huisfit notably added 1.25-metres to the stern overhang, a challenging task to ensure a seamless integration into the structure.

Here are some images detailing additions under its new ownership:

06 Aug $60,000,000 Yacht Lady Lola In Victoria

It was hard not to notice yet another superyacht moored in the Victoria harbour this afternoon and I just had to stop and grab some snaps. Usually it’s hard to get this kind of room for a vessel this large but looks like it fit no problem. By this time next year though yachts of this size will be able to dock at the new Victoria International Marina in the harbour.

This beauty cost $60,000,000 USD to build and is, as far as I can tell, owned by business tycoon Duane Hagadone who has built many businesses in his day from the ground up. I hope him and his friends and family enjoy their time in this glorious city as well sailing around the Gulf Islands and beyond.

22 Jul Superyacht Invictus Invades Victoria

I couldn’t help but notice the 65m superyacht parked in the harbour here in Victoria BC and just had to get a close up shot. While this city is no stranger to superyachts, they’re usually not here for this long and I tend to miss them more than I’d like to. But not this time. The summer of 2013 has been exceptionally busy for me and the rest of the team here, so it was a nice excuse to slip out into the sun and shoot a superyacht.

This boat has rarely been caught in the wild as it was delivered on July 1st and has been seen testing the seas out here on the west coast. It was built for a client in North America, but the owner’s real identity is kept a secret for now and I imagine it will be that way for a while.

I’m extremely happy to have had the chance just to stand next to her and take it all in. She is a beautiful ship at the folks at Delta Marine did an amazing job with this vessel in and out. While I only got to see the outside, the crew onboard was hard at work making her shine and even redoing some of the tiles on the back deck.

I hope her maiden voyage was a successful one and just yesterday I saw her lounging around the waters just off of Oak Bay…perhaps waiting to sail back down or up the coast. Vancouver has seen its fair share of superyachts rolling through town this summer and I imagine they might want to go check the sights out there.

If you’d like to see a few more pictures of Invictus you can do so by checking out our Instagram profile . When you do, don’t forget to hit that follow button and catch all of our wicked awesome IG updates in real time.

Its strategic location has historically made it a bustling port, and today, its waters are a melting pot of diverse cultures and maritime traditions. As you sail through, you can witness traditional junks, modern ferries, and luxurious yachts all sharing the same waters, narrating stories of the harbor’s rich heritage and its progressive future.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Victoria Harbour

Choosing the perfect vessel to navigate the iconic Victoria Harbour with Yachting.Rent is a voyage in itself—one steeped in personal preferences, anticipated experiences, and the magic of maritime exploration. Whether you’re drawn to the time-honoured elegance of a sailing boat or the versatile comfort of a catamaran, we’re here to help you make the perfect choice for your sailing adventure.

Sailing Boats: Tradition Meets Adventure Sailing boats, with their single-hull design, offer a classic sailing experience that’s both thrilling and intimate. As the hull cuts through the waters of Victoria Harbour, you’ll feel each wave and gust of wind, placing you right in the heart of the action. The result is a visceral connection with the sea—an adventure that’s both personal and profound. For those seeking to master the elements, or simply to feel them more keenly, sailing boats provide an experience that’s as close to traditional sailing as it gets.

Catamarans: Comfort Meets Stability On the other hand, catamarans offer a uniquely balanced blend of comfort, stability, and space. Their twin-hull design makes them exceptionally steady on the water—perfect for those who are new to sailing or prefer a smoother journey. The wider platform provides ample space for relaxation or socializing, making catamarans an ideal choice for larger gatherings or families. If your perfect sailing experience involves laid-back luxury with plenty of room to move, a catamaran could be your vessel of choice.

Navigating Your Preferences The choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran ultimately comes down to what you want from your journey. If you crave an exhilarating, hands-on experience that brings you closer to the natural world, a sailing boat could be your perfect match. If, however, you prioritize space, stability, and comfort—particularly if you’re planning to sail with a larger group—a catamaran could be the ideal choice.

No matter your choice, with Yachting.Rent, you’re guaranteed a memorable maritime journey. Our sailing boats and catamarans are meticulously maintained to ensure both your safety and comfort. With a team of skilled professionals at your disposal, you can relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of Victoria Harbour, confident in the knowledge that you’re in safe hands.

Ultimately, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran isn’t just about choosing a type of vessel—it’s about defining your sailing journey, shaping your experiences, and creating unforgettable memories. So, choose your vessel and let Yachting.Rent guide you through the breathtaking waterscape of Victoria Harbour. Your perfect sailing adventure awaits.

Last Sunday, our group of 25 people chartered a medium-sized yacht for a leisurely cruise along Victoria Harbour, accompanied by the mesmerizing “A Symphony of Lights” show. It was my first time exploring Victoria Harbour by boat, and the experience was truly enchanting. Viewing the harbor’s night scenery from the middle of the sea was simply captivating. To add to the excitement, we later indulged in a sumptuous seafood feast at Lei Yue Mun.

Here’s a breakdown of our evening itinerary:

Meeting at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier → Star Walk, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong Museum of Art → Lei Yue Mun (Disembark for dinner) → Disperse at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier

We gathered at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier at 7:20 pm and officially set sail at 7:30 pm. Cruising along the Star Walk, we passed by iconic landmarks such as the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The weather was pleasantly cool that day, and the gentle sea breeze along the expansive coastline made the experience even more delightful.

At precisely 8:00 pm, the “A Symphony of Lights” show began. Watching it from the boat was undoubtedly the best vantage point, surpassing the view from the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront near the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The buildings on both sides of the harbor illuminated with a kaleidoscope of colorful lights and laser beams, illuminating the entire Victoria Harbour. The lights continuously danced and changed, bringing vibrancy to the harbor. As the speed of the light show increased, all the buildings lit up simultaneously, creating the most dazzling and radiant moment. We quickly grabbed our phones to capture the final scene of “A Symphony of Lights.”

Apart from “A Symphony of Lights,” some people choose to venture out on special occasions such as National Day, New Year’s Eve countdown, and Lunar New Year to witness the famous fireworks display over Victoria Harbour.

After the conclusion of “A Symphony of Lights,” the captain navigated the boat towards Lei Yue Mun. Yes, we arrived at Lei Yue Mun for a seafood feast. After a short walk from the pier, we reached Lei Yue Mun Seafood Restaurant. We ordered a variety of seafood dishes, and my personal favorites were the salt and pepper mantis shrimp, garlic butter lobster, and garlic steamed scallops with vermicelli. They were incredibly flavorful and fresh! The captain often recommends interesting routes and itineraries. So, if you’re ever unsure about your next destination, don’t hesitate to ask the captain for suggestions. You might be pleasantly surprised! (Actually, the idea of dining at Lei Yue Mun was suggested by the captain, and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation!)

After enjoying this delightful seafood meal, we headed back to the boat to return to Tsim Sha Tsui Pier. We arrived around 10:00 pm and dispersed.

💁 The captain of Yacht Holimood is highly professional, and if you have any questions or need assistance in planning the best boating route, feel free to consult the captain.

💡The boat we chartered that evening was JY01N , a well-equipped yacht for urban nighttime cruises.
