Istria Region

The Adriatic enjoys an average of 315 cloudless days a year, and with winds in Croatia generally around 10-20 knots, this can make chartering a sailing yacht a great option to explore the picturesque islands and secluded beaches at your leisure. The winds do tend to get stronger in the fall, so bear this in mind when booking your charter. 

There should be ample sailing yachts, gulets (traditional wooden yachts), and catamarans for charter in Croatia, but we do recommend booking early to secure your perfect yacht and desired itinerary. 

Gulet Charters in Croatia

Gulets are traditional wooden boats originating from Turkey , but are now widely available throughout Croatia and Greece . These types of boats offer a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht, for those wishing to spend a bit less but still enjoy a fabulous yacht charter in the Mediterranean . 

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Croatia. The average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Croatia are as follows;

• For motor yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can range from $32,000 to $1,8m per week plus expenses
• For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can go from $32,363 to $582,882 weekly plus expenses

The optimal times for yacht charters in Croatia’s sapphire-hued waters span from May till October. During this time, you can benefit from calmer seas, reliably clement weather, and warm swimming temperatures. Croatia’s peak season is July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and packed marinas in these months.

There are a variety of options, although most yachts charters tend to begin in Dubrovnik or Split in the Dalmatia region, both of which have major international transport links. There are 56 official marinas along the Croatian coast from Umag to Dubrovnik. Some of out top picks include;

• ACI Marina Dubrovnik – located within a short distance to Dubrovnik’s historic old town. It has 380 slips and can accommodate yachts up to 60m/196ft. For larger yachts, or yachts not requiring a slip, another popular option is to utilize the international cruise ship terminal quay, which is happy to facilitate yacht charter pick-ups and drop-offs.
• ACI Marina Korčula – ideal for a stop off at one of the many island destinations on your yacht charter, we recommend this sheltered marine, which accommodates yachts up to a maximum LOA of 40m/131ft.
• Lumbarda Marina – also on Korčula this marina has slips catering to yachts up to a max length of 25m/82ft.
• ACI Marina Vrboska – located in the celebrated islnad of Hvar, this marina offers berths for yachts up to a max length of 30m/98ft.
• Cavtat Marina – If you're struggling to find a slip in the summer, we recommend this marina, which is located to the south of Dubrovnik and enjoys good shelter from all winds. It offers 119 slips for yachts up to a max LOA of 60m/197ft.

Some of the best ports in Croatia are also located in the Istria region in northern Croatia. We recommend;

• D-Marin Dalmacija – located a few kilometers south of the ancient city of Zadar, which is the largest marina in Croatia with 1,200 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.
• ACI Marina Rovinj – catering for yachts with a LOA of up to 25m/82ft 
• Marina Funtana – max length 20m/65ft. 

For larger berths in the Split-Dalmatia region:

• ACI Marina Split –  located in the heart of Croatia's "jewel" this marina has recently been modernised, offering great shopping, dining, fuelling and repair services to name but a few, alongside 318 protected berths that can accommodate superyachts up to 90m LOA. 
• Marina Kastela – just 7km up the coast from Split – which can accommodate superyachts of up 150m/492ft in length, with a draft of 8m.
• D-Marin Mandalina – located in the city of Šibenik, situated between two National Parks within a protected lagoon, this marina boasts 429 slips, and has also been specially developed to accommodate yachts of up to 140m/459ft LOA. 

With its rich cultural and architectural history, along with lush national parks and secluded beaches, Croatia is fast becoming one of our most popular destinations. Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

• Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard. 
• Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
• You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.

Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.

The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

Since 1995 we have been working in yacht charter business and offer sailing boat rental in Croatia . We mostly work with high-quality sailing boats provided by our sister company Beneteau Croatia . In addition to yacht charter in Croatia , we also operate one of the oldest and best sailing school in Croatia where we provide sailing courses to “new” as well as to experienced sailors.

Our company philosophy is to provide our clients with the best possible service  when they charter a yacht for a sailing holiday in Croatia . Our team consists mainly of very experienced sailors, securing the highest possible standard in the whole process with arranging/planning, booking, arrival at one of our charter bases in Croatia and final departure from the Marina for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Croatia.

As already mentioned, our yacht charter fleet consists mainly of sailing boats from Beneteau. In our fleet we have boats from 30 feet to about   64 feet and in terms of berths our boats offer space for 6-12 persons. All boats are carefully maintained by our technical team and the colleagues from Beneteau Croatia . As a charter client you can expect to board a charter boat in super condition.

Well, what is the wording – no rule without an exception ! Actually, we at Ultra Sailing also have Catamarans for charter ; the catamarans are of the brand Fountaine Pajot . If you rather want to rent a motorboat , mega yacht or other types of vessel our experienced booking team can of course assist you in finding vessels of those types.

From which charter bases in Croatia can the Ultra Sailing boats be rented?  Ultra has branch offices and staff in ACI Marina Split , ACI Marina Dubrovnik , Marina Baotic (Trogir) ,    ACI Marina Pomer in Pula and Marina Kastela . Charter boats have to be returned in the same Marina they were rented in. Upon request and payment of additional fee it is possible to arrange one way charter from Trogir/Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa . 

Charter price  depends on a number of factors, size and type of charter boat, duration of rental and date of the charter . At Ultra we offer various discount programs like early booking Yachtcharter   or last minute sailing if you are flexible it is possible to enjoy a week sailing holiday in Croatia at a bargain price.

If you are looking to charter a sailing boat in Croatia for the first time, you of course need to be aware of the formal requirements for chartering a yacht in Croatia , no need to say that a license for operating the vessel is required. Additionally, sailing and navigation skills should be on an adequate level. If, by the conclusion of your voyage, you haven’t utilized the entire sum, you will receive a refund for the remaining amount. Conversely, if your expenses surpass the initial prepayment, you will need to settle the difference before concluding your journey.

When to Charter a Crewed Yacht in Croatia:

The yacht charter season in Croatia begins in April & ends in October. High season for charter yachts is from the last week of July until the first week of September. Keep in mind that the water will still be chilly in April & May, but by June the water temperatures reach a pleasant 74°F. If snorkeling & swimming at beaches and anchorages are important, the months of June, July & August are ideal. Temperatures average between 73°F-86°F, making it the ideal time to go!

Charterverträge haben oft Fallstricke für den Kunden

Die europäischen branchenverbände wollten den standard definieren, viel unkenntnis der flottenbetreiber, die vorteile für skipper.

In der Charterszene sind die Verträge zwischen Flottenbetreiber und Endkunden seit Jahren ein schwieriges Thema. Jeder kochte da sein eigenes Süppchen, manche AGB’s (Allgemeine Geschäfts-Bedingungen) waren eine knappe DIN-A4 Seite lang, andere 8 Seiten lang in winzigen Schriftgrößen. Nicht wenige Verträge der Vercharterer häuften den Skipper bergweise Pflichten auf, machten in Sachen eigener Haftung aber einen auffällig schlanken Fuß.

So warnte die YACHT dann auch immer wieder vor ziemlich kritischen Klauseln in den Verträgen, die mitunter nahezu unkalkulierbare Risiken mit sich brachten. Und da gab es viele: Etwa wenn die im Vertrag genannte Kautionssumme, gemeinhin die Höhe der Selbstbeteiligung der Kasko-Versicherung des Bootes, im Vertrag so beschrieben wurde: “Die Kaution muss nicht der Höhe der Eigenbeteiligung der Kasko-Versicherung entsprechen”. Letztere wird aber nirgendwo genannt. So unterschrieb der Skipper quasi einen Blanko-Scheck für den Flottenbetreiber. Das konnte teuer werden.

Oder wenn im Vertrag so Klauseln standen wie “Defekte oder fehlende Ausrüstung an Bord berechtigt den Kunden nicht zur Minderung des Charterpreises”. Auf gut Deutsch: Bugstrahler kaputt, Autopilot geht nicht, Außenborder vom Dinghi fehlt - keine Chance auf eine finanzielle Entschädigung. Die Yacht hat sogar schon Verträge gesehen, in denen die Segel oder Beiboote aus der Kasko-Haftung herausgenommen wurden.

Man muss zwar klar sagen, dass bestimmt 90 Prozent der Charterurlaube ohne größere Probleme über die Bühne gehen und die Kunden ihre Verträge gar nicht näher lesen zu brauchen, doch sie sollten es tun, denn dort wird viel sehr Wichtiges geregelt: Wieviel muss man zahlen, wenn man vom Törn kurzfristig zurücktreten muss? Wie lange muss man Warten, wenn ein Schiff bei Ankunft der Crew nicht startklar ist?

Diesem Problem sollte nun einmal auf europäischer Ebene angegangen werden. Dafür hat das International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) , und der Verband European Boating Industry (EBI) als Grundlage den Fair-Charter-Vertrag des deutschen Versicherers YACHT-Pool genommen und zusammen mit den nationalen Charterverbänden, in Deutschland der Vereinigung Deutscher Yacht- Charterunternehmen (VDC), zu einem Standardwerk entwickelt. Nach langer Abstimmung ist so ein rund 5 Seiten langes Papier entstanden, dass die Rechte und Pflichten von Kunden und Flottenbetreibern ausgewogen darstellt und vor allem auch neueres EU-Recht berücksichtigt.

“Es war nämlich durchaus so, dass Charterverträge einzelner Flottenbetreiber Regelungen beinhalteten, die gar nicht mit EU-Recht vereinbar sind”, sagt Dr. Friedrich Schöchl, vom Versicherungsmakler YACHT-Pool. Schon vor vielen Jahren hatte sich seine Firma dem Missstand angenommen und den sogenannten “Fair-Charter-Vertrag” formuliert, der dem Dilemma ein Ende setzen sollte. In Kroatien fand der Vorschlag auch viel Gehör, aber im internationalen Chartermarkt blieb er die Ausnahme. “Die EBI ist dann auf mich zugekommen und haben gefragt, ob man nicht zusammen auf Grundlage des Vertrages ein Standardwerk für den Europäischen Markt entwickeln könnte. Das ist nun geschehen.”

Und so wurden gleich zwei alte Zöpfe des Vertragsrechtes abgeschnitten, dass noch immer in den Köpfen vieler Skipper, Agenten, Flottenbetreiber und auch Rechtsanwälte steckt: “Zwei wichtige Punkte betreffen den Klageort und das Recht, nachdem verhandelt wird, wenn um eine Charter gestritten wird. Da dachten viele Flottenbetreiber noch immer, der deutsche Kunde müsste sie am Sitz der Firma verklagen, was wirtschaftlich wegen Reisekosten, Übersetzungskosten etc. Jahrzehntelang wirtschaftlich unsinnig war.”

Das wussten manche Flottenbetreiber und wähnten sich so in Sicherheit. ”Doch die EU hat das über die Verbraucherschutzrechte längst geklärt: Hat die Firma, über die der Vertrag geschlossen wird, eine deutsche Webseite und deutsche Verträge, gilt deutsches Recht, egal wo die Firma im Ausland sitzt. Und Zweitens: Verhandelt wird an dem Gericht das am Wohnort des Kunden liegt!”, so Dr. Schöchl.

Nun gibt es also diese EU-abgestimmten “Allgemeinen Charterbedingungen”, die von den jeweiligen Landesverbänden der Charterszene ihren Mitgliedsbetrieben und den Flottenbetreibern an Herz gelegt werden. Allerdings: verbindlich ist dies nicht, jede Firma entscheidet selber, ob sie den Regelungen folgt oder nicht. Als Richtlinie dürfte die Empfehlung aber sicher auf offene Ohren stoßen, sparen sich Firmen doch so eigene, teure juristische Beratung .

Auch bei der Vereinigung Deutscher Yacht- Charterunternehmen (VDC) ist man froh, dass endlich Bewegung in das Thema gekommen ist, so deren 1. Vorsitzender Christian Zaloudek: “Wir führen seit vielen Jahren Gespräche mit unseren europäischen Flotten-Partnern über die Vereinheitlichung der Verträge. Das ist einfach viel kundenfreundlicher, macht es für ihn und auch die Agenturen viel übersichtlicher. Daher haben wir auch engagiert an der Entwicklung dieses gemeinsamen Standard-Vertrages in vielen Beratungsrunden mitgearbeitet. Und für die Zukunft können wir diesen jetzt unseren Flotten-Partnern wärmstens empfehlen, dass hat nochmal ein ganz anderes Gewicht. Ich denke, das wird Gehör finden.”

Was steht nun aber eigentlich drin, was bemerkenswert und besser für die Chartercrews ist? Da wäre schon einmal unmissverständlich die Regel, dass eine Verzögerung der Übergabe der Charteryacht, etwa weil sie noch repariert werden muss, zu einer anteiligen Minderung des Charterpreises berechtigt. Einen Tag aufs Schiff gewartet? Einen Tag weniger bezahlt!

Auch Ausrüstungsmängel, also defekte oder fehlende Ausrüstung berechtigt jetzt zu finanzieller Kompensation. Das zugesagte Bugstrahlruder fehlt? Es gibt kein Außenborder zum Dinghi?

Ärger gibt es auch immer wieder um die Rückgabe der Kaution. Die behalten Firmen immer mal wieder länger ein, obwohl es keine Beanstandungen gab. Nun ist geregelt: 24 Stunden nach Rückgabe muss das Geld wieder freigegeben sein. Ebenfalls manchmal ein Problem: Die Crew will ein Boot zurückgeben, aber vor ihrer Rückreise kommt kein Basis Mitarbeiter für den Check-Out. Nach dem neuen Vertrag gelte dann: Wird das Boot fristgerecht zurückgegeben und der Basisleiter schafft keine Übernahme oder verweigert eine unterschriebene Kopie des Rückgabeprotokolls, gilt das Boot dann als einwandfrei zurückgegeben.

Das gute des neuen Vertrages ist, dass er viele solcher kleinen Details regelt, die in der Praxis vorgekommen. So sieht es auch Dr. Friedrich Schöchl: “Es sind viele Dinge aus jahrzehntelanger, erlebter Praxis mit unseren Kautions- und Skipper-Haftpflichtversicherungen in den Vertrag eingeflossen.”

Dazu gehört übrigens auch ein Punkt, der lange Zeit von Charterfirmen still und heimlich totgeschwiegen wurde: Die GPS-Verfolgung der Schiffe. Die werden schon seit Jahren bei vielen Flotten mit entsprechenden Sensoren versehen. Wie das mit dem europäischen Datenschutz zusammengeht, war immer so eine Frage, die niemand so richtig angehen wollte. Im neuen Vertragsentwurf wird die GPS-Ortung der Schiffe nun offen angemerkt.

Natürlich enthält das 5-Seitige Papier auch diverse Pflichten für den Skipper: Schäden sofort melden, Strafen bei verspäteter Rückgabe, Haftung bei grob Fahrlässigem handeln über die Versicherung hinaus und ähnliches. Deshalb sollte die Lektüre der AGB’s einer Charter einfach dazugehören, auch wenn kaum jemand im Zuge der urlaubs-Vorfreude Lust dazu hat.
